Why not? Perhaps there aren't regular boats on that lake/inland ocean? A huge canoe like that is in many ways much better than a boat. There's no saying that its design is the best design available in this kingdom.

I read more about the history of war canoes and I suppose they might be useful for transporting men and products up and down river, which is the primary function of boats in Othea.

Edit: I feel like longboats and small galleys would be more standard in Othean water.

Why is there a war canoe in the cities harbor? You could have stuck with stealing an actual boat? (Not that you can't go the war canoe rout.)

Ah I forgot, fairy tales contain detailed military information regarding distant foreign powers. How could I forget the story of "The bear and the Manhattan project" which taught little Russian girls and boys the design of nuclear weapons.

Yeah, the level of information technology was really what I was concerned with on that front.
