Bitch actually took money from me. Said it was for "surgical costs".

Algebra was always common for Grade 8's though... :/
Kaga said o.o No... Kindergarten here (at least as I remember it) a bit more than just daycare. While there was quite a bit of playtime (I mean, you're dealing with 5-year-olds), I also remember learning the basics of how to read and write in kindergarten. Plus, I think it's supposed to warm kids up to the idea of what it's like to be in a school environment (you know, lots of other kids around, one adult who's in charge, etc...).

So yeah, there's kind of an important first step happening there. It's not just a place for parents to drop their kids off during the day.

That's what the "minimal time set aside of sitting children done and directly teaching them something in an academic manner" part was referring to. They take about 30 minutes - 1 hour (total) a day to try to teach basic math and english to children, at least in a way they sit the child down and have them work on it. Anything else is the teachers either 'hoping' that the student will find a toy that they can connect to math and english, or changing the toys available to such an extent that everything available connects to it.

Now, go to most Canadian ECE's and they've try to sugar-coat it with stuff such as "We scaffold the child, letting them learn when they want to, and when they're engaged etc." which is true, but it also means a lot of their learning is luck of the draw because so little time is spent running actual lessons. While Grade 1 and up is far more "Children sit for a number of hours and are given lectures and worksheets" sort of learning going on.

Kaga said No, it's basically a new set of standards that politicians are trying to force onto schools, making kids learn English, math and science "better" and "faster".The reason why there's such an uproar about it is because and they're forcing standards onto students faster than the teachers can re-work their entire system to keep up. Not to mention, this also worsens an already very broken education system for more complicated reasons... Boy am I glad I managed to graduate high school as all that was starting, so I didn't have to suffer through much of it.

Ah I see.
They're trying to rush learning even though tons of students struggle greatly in school as it is. :/

That's even worse than them trying to push in another "One size fits all" method.
I once had a watch that kept this up for years. Could never turn the damn thing off cause it's 'reset' button was too small to fit anything in.
I ended up losing (and still hearing it), one day. It's stopped now though, but I'm assuming it's battery just finally gave out.
Kaga said I can also (sort of) explain Japanese school level divisions if anyone needs me to, since that tends to confuse a lot of anime-viewers and the like. Just, you know, while I'm here.

My understanding of it is that they also have your middle school and high school.
But High School ends at Grade 10 or 11 depending on where in Japan you live (I believe England in similliar there, but they can also end in Grade 12 in some (but few) areas. Plus, both countries have mandatory uniforms... >.<).
And students also take tests among joining to the school, being divided into classes depending on academic performance.

How close was I?

Kaga said I remember spending a lot of time as a kid wondering why "first grade" was labeled as such when it didn't actually come first.

As a Canadian, my understanding was that it's because Kidnergarten was/is largely seen as daycare/childcare, not a place for children to really sit down and do academic work. All the academic stuff wouldn't really start until Grade 1, hence the name difference.

Yet, oddly enough professions like ECE (Early Childhood Education) will claim that it's already too academically focused, and needs to adopt a more 'play to learn' approach.
To which I assume Kindergarten varies a ton depending on the school and the teacher, because I remember far more playing and being silly in it than I do school work as a kid.
And today when I'm in a Kindergarten room as a placement student they really do spend the whole day playing, with minimal time set aside of sitting children done and directly teaching them something in an academic manner.

Kaga said See, I wasn't even gonna mention that.

I do admit, as a Canadian the whole common core thing exploding in America has confused me as well.
I don't even know what the issue is, or what common core is really trying to do.

I assume by the name of common core that it's trying to reinforce a "One size fits all" approach? But I've seen nothing either confirming or dismissing that so far.

You realize you might have just resurrected an otherwise dead debate right?
I know this thread is basically dead.
But this was just posted on YouTube and I felt that it relates.

Everytime someone loses a tooth your tongue just can't help but explore the hole like it's going "Jim? Jim! Where did Jim go!? I swear he was right here a moment ago! Jim!".

I wouldn't expect a coallition of Atheists to occur on a "medium" level like WB.As for Stalin's motivation, that's probably the case, yes, but it's also probably the case for religious extremists as well.

True, blind loyalty and fear does play roles in Religion. So does power plays as far as higher ups in religion are concerned.

A lot of the causes for these cases, may they be executed under the banner of religion or a political ideal like Communism though does depend of fear, blind obedience, and not being allowed to question things. Things where if people take efforts to counter it are also by extension taking efforts that end up countering the foundation of religion.
