Aye, just glanced over everyone's chars and your bunch is scary! So many powerhouses...

Not that it's a bad thing but alchemy like I have in mind should have clear rules just in case, yanno?

"Lead to gold? Stupid. But I can rearrange the protons and electrons just so to make platinum. Thing is I spend all that on my research. Easy come, easy go, right? Hahaha!"

Become anime girl, destroy robots

Well if you put it that way...

Sensing what something is made of and changing it into something else on touch (small scale like fingernail to pumpkin size) overpowered or underpowered? Also limits on catgirl style physical changes?

Seraphina hissed through her teeth as she pushed the needle into Tarak's eye.

"Sorry, bro, I really messed up there. I was aiming for your forehead and now look what happened."

She sighed in annoyance with herself and pulled the needle out to inspect the damage.

"Hm. Good thing you're so porous or that would have left a mark. Guess subpar materials have their merits, namely being expendable. Still, I was spacing out hard just now. Mm, time for a break."

With a brief huff she set down the half sewn doll next to the others and put the wayward needle safely into a pin cushion. She doubted she would even be able to finish as soon as she planned, since the Tarak plushie would need materials she didn't have for the armor. She poked the little bear's nose before admonishing it for things far beyond any inanimate object's control.

"Why do you have to be all fancy and live in a shell? Why can't you just be soft like your brothers and sisters? Well, I guess little Nero's death mask is going to be a custom fabrication, too. And don't get me started on Abaddon!"

Flopping onto her side she looked over her collection so far. Most of the crew was now complete, at least in a rudimentary fashion. Some were unfinished like Tarak's bear and none had completed outfits yet. But she supposed it wasn't bad for a few scattered hours of work. The problem was that this hobby gave her too much time to think, and her head wasn't in the best of places lately. Not for a while actually.

Rolling off her futon Phi shut off the bedside light and closed the curtain that kept her secret away from any casual visitors. They would be arriving at Plenty soon which meant preparations had to be made and her head needed to be in the game. It didn't help that she hadn't managed more than a casual conversation in all three days of travel, not since speaking with Amy. Then there was the impromptu boarding action. While successful Phi herself could only fret helplessly while others put themselves at risk and Navi even came out badly hurt.

"What a terrifying mess that was. Goes to show how ready we are for a sudden crisis."

She thought about the conflicting ideas just before their captain settled on a bold and risky plan of attack. Phi herself agreed more with Laurey back then, to just cut and run. Granted she had followed orders without objection at the time. And in the end she could do nothing to help anyone, not Navi, not even Amy.

She sighed again as she finished her new look, taking on the image of another star marine long ago listed as KIA. It felt strange and uncomfortable, but it was the best idea she could come up with when Tarak brought up false identities. It was still a risk but a lie like this was easier to swallow, as well as maintain. Better than using their real identities by far. Even so she wondered at the fellow children they were impersonating. Had they ever actually met before? Were any of the ones listed as missing still alive?

Slapping her cheeks Phi scolded herself for once again getting lost in thought. Soon would be the time for action. Uncertainty had no place in the battlefield. Her personal armory helped center her mind and settle her nerves. The familiar equipment all had its own place, its own function. Consistent, reliable, each weapon like an old friend. She took her time preparing a lightweight loadout including minimal armor, and focusing on a pistol and submachine gun combination. For close quarters against other humans this bare minimum should be enough. And yet she found herself hesitating, and then reaching for a special piece of heavy ordinance. Well, this grenade launcher was about as heavy a weapon she allowed in the case anyway. This she slung over her back before going to the bridge to wait.

It wasn't long, less than an hour, before they finally arrived at Plenty. While the others began to gather on the bridge Phi took the opportunity to collect whatever local information she could easily gather. Among this was the crashed ship itself, which soon dominated everyone's attention.

"Damn, that is a big one. Good thing, too, or else the Ascendancy would probably have our AI friend by now. I wonder how many organic prisoners survived?" She thought out loud before laughing at Avelyn's points. "Too true. Looking scary and bullying Ascendancy troops sounds fun for once."

She wanted to add more to the conversation but Tarak spoke up in his no nonsense tone so she shut up and listened for now, committing the teams and plan to memory. It was shaping up to be a good arrangement, like showing your hand but holding a few cards back. However, when Tarak assigned the final team's role a hint of the surprise she felt inside showed on Phi's face. She couldn't stop her eyes from glancing at Laurey carrying a look of confusion. That woman was almost certainly the most tech savvy crew member on this ship, but after spending a little time with her going over combat analysis Phi was a little worried about her constitution. Maybe she was wrong but she thought she had picked up little signs that Laurey wasn't physically feeling well lately. Or the whole time Phi had known her. Even if that wasn't the case she was extremely valuable in Phi's eyes while her own skills were at best adequate for this particular job. So why?

Is this… about Proxima? Ahh, that makes sense. If it were me I suppose I wouldn't want someone like me on the ground either. I cracked during the most critical operation and others paid for it. But why Ariel? I can see Amy being better off away from the gunfire but- ah, it's no use thinking about this anymore. We've got our jobs and I'm not about to raise a fuss now.

Phi's face became blank and impassive once more. With a sharp nod she set aside the launcher and took a seat at one of the consoles.

"Yessir, I'll do my best from here. The rest of you be safe down there."

She didn't look at anyone after that, getting right to work. There were a lot of preparations to be made if she was going to do this right.

Actually don't mind me

It occurred to Phi that she had no idea exactly what race Amy was. She hadn't planned to pry or research the matter, instead feeling it was fine to just accept that small ignorance. More and more it seemed to her like what someone was couldn't hold a proverbial candle to who they were. However, Amy looked a little uncomfortable or disappointed maybe when talking about her race, which now made Phi a little curious. But she held the question in check. Reputations were funny things as even if completely inaccurate they all too often defined someone or at least colored the observer's otherwise unbiased opinion. Amy was Amy, so far as Phi could tell, and she rather liked it like that.

Truly, what other of her race could be Amy? None other. Everyone was generally unique in their own way but Amy especially was becoming something special in her eyes. With each moment, word, and gesture down to the light twitches of her ears she was proving rare among rarities. At least this is what Phi thought she saw and what she wanted to see. She wanted to believe she could still trust a few people in this universe.

"No. It's almost impossible to imagine you as a reclusive hermit." She agreed, joining her in the light-hearted laughter. She watched and smiled while Amy danced with the little seal, and wove her inspirational words together. No, it wasn't just a speech for Phi's benefit, Amy was opening up in response to her own apparent transparency. Granted Phi had still been hiding things and felt guilty under the shining light of Amy's honesty.

Unless she's actually-

No. No, I think I could tell by now if she wasn't really as she appears.

Oh yes, wise, grown up Phi is surely infallible.

The swirling undercurrent in her heart shifted, attracted to brief thoughts of doubt that she pushed away like always. Now wasn't the time, not when someone was pouring their own heart into trying to help just her. How long had it been since she could feel like this? Almost hopeful. Doubts or not she didn't want to do anything but bask in that warm sense of caring.

Though a little perplexed, she didn't resist the handoff of her handiwork back to her own hands. The bright eyed figure before her had more to say yet, and in Phi's experience most questions would be answered if she waited and listened. So she squeezed the imperfect but pleasantly soft stuffed seal in her lap, watching and listening. It brought a small sense of comfort she hadn't realized she needed. Indeed while the things said and the passion behind the words were beautiful and lifted her heart, a nagging familiarity with the experience tickled the back of her mind. Noticing it now she felt the emotion had a distinct flavor that was out of place, something she couldn't help but wonder at.

This.. it feels, what's the word?

A soft, almost loving touch on her cheek and the mention of family brought the image of a gentle, feminine face to her mind. It was not a face she could ever forget but it had been a long time since Phi had seen her own mother. With this image she knew at once the word she was searching for and her heart felt like it clenched painfully.

Bittersweet.

She clutched the seal more aggressively and almost bit her lip at her distressing inner landscape. But it seemed Amy's presence alone triggered her usual defenses, keeping visible signs of her troubles minimized. It was not even a conscious decision at this point though she knew she would probably go on hiding things given the choice. She had to wonder when her love of theatrics had been corrupted into a dependence on deception.

A man's face with cool blue eyes came to mind, a face that conveyed confidence and intelligence. A face that made that dark undercurrent swell and her teeth grit at the complex, conflicting feelings that followed. Fear was perhaps the strongest and most easily recognized but of what exactly remained unclear to an observer like Amy.

Whatever it was, that tangle of thorns was shattered by the precious image Amy created. Shocked by the sudden display of what was in Amy's heart, the driving force behind her words, Phi had no room left to be plagued by her own dark thoughts. The light from that scene forced the slowly awakening dragon back into slumber, becoming only a faint murmur once more. Eyes wide, Phi's hand had moved automatically to cover her open mouth. She was far from ignorant of illusions and how they worked, but she was utterly unprepared for such a surprise, or the way it was used in this moment.

Feeling the warmth of Amy's touch, Phi looked deeply into her eyes, taking in everything she had said and the heartfelt meaning behind it all. Biting back the pressure that threatened to break her carefully crafted armor, she swallowed hard. Now fighting for her composure which usually came easily, Phi was dismayed at a slight tremble that couldn't be repressed. Her throat felt stiff as if it didn't want words to pass through, but she forced herself to speak.

"I-I understand. You're.. right. So very right. It's quite the gift of insight, something special, amazing. I- th-thank you. Sorry, I'm stuttering like this, I just…. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure at first. People are often more than they appear and just meeting someone it can be hard to tell what's really inside their hearts. I've known too many people that… but you… you're different, aren't you?"

Stumbling over her thoughts and words so uncharacteristically Phi took a mental step back and tried to collect herself. It was probably a good idea to stop talking, come to think of it. Off balance as she was Phi didn't know where her thoughts were going or what she might say next. Yes, it was probably best to be quiet until she got herself under control again. Besides, she did have a delivery to make. Holding the seal tightly she rose to her feet to excuse herself.

Right. Time to escape before.. something happens.

"Thank you doesn't feel like quite enough. I didn't come here looking for comfort but…" Unable to find the right words to explain it she laughed at herself, before smiling at Amy without anything but gratitude to be seen. She was still shaking, her self control showing cracks where there were none before, but where words alone failed that smile spoke for her.

The lavender skinned alien's positivity was very infectious, and Phi had no immunity built up in that moment, nor did she care to resist the smile Amy drew out of her. She inclined her head, confirming the obvious guess, though the way Amy took to snuggling the thing a passerby might think it was meant for her. That smile transitioned into a frown with furrowed brow and slightly cocked head, not because she was averse to joining her on the bed, but for confusion about what she said. However, with a little thought put in she realized she must seem antisocial so far, especially to someone she had only just met and barely spoken to.

Amy went on and that confused expression deepened into a soft scowl. Phi opened her mouth to say something, and then snapped it shut once Amy slipped up. At first shocked that she had been exposed so easily Phi's face went pale and her body rigid. Briefly she considered trying to cover it up, but logically there was only one way Amy could know and any lie would be a stretch to sell. Instead she had to consider herself fortunate that Amy wasn't mischievous enough to want to spread Phi's little secret. With a long sigh her slender shoulders slumped in defeat. A few steps later she plopped down beside the older woman, resignation and embarrassment settling on her features.

"So you saw. And here I thought I covered all the camera angles. How careless. That is…" She paused as deeper embarrassment colored her cheeks.

I am so damn lucky I didn't start my master plan making plushies of everyone yet. If she had seen that I don't think I'd ever be able to show my face again.

"..well, that little hobby is super embarrassing. Needless to say I don't want the others to find out. Even if they didn't make fun of me I could never live it down." She finished this thought and closed her eyes, leaning back on her hands. With another deep breath she looked back at Amy, as serious an expression as she could muster returning to her face. Of course the severity of this look was somewhat undermined by that lingering blush.

"More importantly, I wanted to correct you on one thing- no, two things, but first! 'Professional nanny' doesn't feel right at all, nor does the mere title of counselor. Not that I think you're unprofessional or lacking in good counsel. I may not know just the right word, but I feel like you're going to be, and already are, something more special than your average therapist. So don't you dare sell yourself short, ma'am. Deal?"

Dammit, I do know the words, I just can't bring myself to say 'surrogate mother.' I might not even be able to until I know for sure what happened, and there's no telling how long that will take.

"As for the other thing, it's harder than I expected to kick a habit I didn't even have for very long. The way we were thrown into war like that, no, it's probably true for any soldier to a certain extent. At any moment in war you might lose a close friend, if not for being killed then for sudden reassignment. Day after day like that, you start building a mental wall without even realizing it. You start to… protect yourself and avoid getting too close to others. At least that's how it was for me, but I did have a few other reasons for feeling isolated from my comrades. I've been trying to bridge that involuntary gap between myself and everyone, I really have. But I guess it's going to take more time and work. I want to connect as family again, or at least friends, and not just have those things be words on my lips."

Her wistful smile and otherwise calm demeanor belied Phi's true feelings. Unaware of Amy's ability her mental guard was down, and her actual emotions were easy to read. Loneliness, desperate longing, fear of failure or rejection, the desire to be able to rely on others and have others rely on her. And swimming beneath these feelings was a deeper issue of doubt and uncertainty, silently threatening everything important in her heart. To be able to sense these things without seeing the facade Phi wanted to present, one might expect to see the girl shaking and on the verge of tears. But no matter how skilled an actress, that mask was only skin deep.

A shy girl, that's how she sees me? I suppose that makes sense, I've only been holding myself back the whole time we've been together. Note to self, open up a bit more. I'm not likely going to find something this close to family ever again.

Phi's eyes drifted upward, accompanied by a somewhat wry expression. She didn't exactly hate such a show of affection, it had its place. But Navi was definitely right in this case, Phi didn't love headpats, either. However, for Tarak's sake or maybe some other reason Phi simply shrugged. Seeing Navi try so hard to act normally despite falling apart, Phi's issues felt small and she ended up burying them a little deeper than usual.

While Tarak stepped up with some words of wisdom Navi needed to hear, she was temporarily not needed, and likewise distracted. The one wearing her lunch, Laurey, had a less than comfortable expression and was practically hiding behind the Captain now. That reaction wasn't hard to read considering Navi's breakdown during their introduction. She made a mental note to help clear that up in the coming days as she got to know everyone. Right now wasn't exactly a good time, not when they were still sorting out the details of the mission. Speaking of, Phi spoke up again briefly.

"Yeah, I like the way Avelyn thinks, too. Though it might be better to save the resources needed for a decoy unless absolutely needed."

And while I'm working on getting to know people maybe I can put some effort into not being so paranoid about mind magic? She obviously wasn't peeking at anything a moment ago. If I'm not being stupid for once she probably doesn't care to look in my head. I feel like I owe her an apology. Would that be weird out of the blue? Probably.

Her thoughts were drawn back to a darker place, as a few unsavory people were mentioned. Mentally preparing to shake those feelings off and stay focused, her thoughts stalled at the first sight of Mr. Cuddleton cradled in Navi's arms. After the earlier shock from the slippers Phi was more or less ready and held her composure. That didn't mean the stuffed bear didn't melt away her blooming negativity and attempts at focus alike. She smiled at the girl an inch shorter and one year older, happy to see her feeling better. She flashed a grateful expression at Amy, belatedly realizing her as the source of such a convenient healing totem.

What is it about cute, soft things that's just so irresistible? All this time I still don't have a good scientific answer. Must be some kind of ancient magic. Yup.

And on that thought Captain Zhang made her decision, which was an order even if not clearly stated. Phi nodded sharply, showing she understood. She was relieved Natasha had chosen the shorter route, even though it sounded like they couldn't easily skirt around the dangerous space of Maiden's Reach. Of course she would have accepted either option since Natasha was their commander now. It definitely made a psychological difference to have a superior Phi wanted to serve under for once, and she was willing to bet good credits most of the others felt the same.

With a chuckle at Nero's reaction to his new status as crew, Phi began to excuse herself. This quiet exit was interrupted by the strange and strangely pleasant alien among them. Curious, she paused with her head cocked to one side. She had to admit, Amy was good at catching people's attention. Three words came to mind as Amy talked: cute, naive, and altruistic. Fortunately for her, Phi admired these traits in an individual and it brought a smile to her face to know someone like this was with them. She only hoped their story wouldn't end in tragedy.

With another chuckle and a nod in Amy's direction, Phi slipped away while she could. Taking advantage of the good mood, courtesy of Amy, Phi hummed to herself as she strolled all the way back to the cargo hold. Her crates were stacked neatly to a corner, and one in particular she shifted and unlatched. Inside were a variety of outfits and appearance related accessories tightly packed together. There were also tools for modifying or creating garments, which would be put to use shortly. After a few minutes of weighing her options Phi decided to sacrifice a lavender velvet shawl and the padding material of one of the prosthetics. Setting herself up out of sight Phi got to work on the small but important project she had decided to start.

Some twenty minutes later she stopped to check her handy work. It wasn't one of her greatest creations, but for a hasty job with limited material it wasn't bad, either. Tucking it under one arm she looked around to make sure no one else was around, having almost spaced out into her work. Thankfully no one seemed to be secretly or overtly watching her which eased her fear of embarrassment. From here Phi left the cargo hold and returned to the main corridor, to first check Amy's quarters, hoping to catch her alone. She wasn't hard to find with a little searching, and Phi cleared her throat to catch the woman's attention. From behind her back Phi presented the recognizably seal shaped plushie she had made.

"So, coincidentally I came across this today, and I think a certain someone might appreciate it far more than me. Would you mind giving this to her for me? No need to say where it's from."

Phi lied as if it was the most natural thing, certain she could hide her talents and keep an embarrassing hobby secret. While many still viewed Phi as a child she did not see herself the same way. But if her affinity for cute things, particularly stuffed animals, ever came to light then the reputation she was trying to build would surely go up in flames. In that case Tarak would probably still be patting her head well into their eighties. So with a short wave accompanied by another bright smile Phi turned to make her final escape back to the cargo hold.
"Phi"

Even as she moved away Tarak's hand, aided by his long arm, followed her movement to continue the ruffling of the black wig. Looking up with the intent to give him a look to cease and desist, she saw he wasn't even consciously deconstructing her professional image. The discussion on the mission went on as did the wonderful circus of their unusual meet and greet. Phi could only sigh and shake her head with a smile. Her mind drifted just a little as a whirlwind of affectionate alien joined the fray, and held Finn against her chest. Wide eyed, Phi was only broken out of the shock by Navi, and at that point she opted to let that situation resolve itself.

A seal plushie? Dammit girl! My heart- Oh.

Phi was going to respond at first but Narvia's sudden breakdown demanded more immediate attention. The girl seemed confused at her own tears, but Phi was hardly surprised. After the trauma and stress they had all endured this moment was perhaps inevitable for all of them. Phi dreaded the same for herself, when everything came crashing down at once to shatter her finely crafted composure. Though in Phi's case, she was pretty sure she knew exactly when that mental break would happen. So she pulled Navi close, and transferred Tarak's hand to the slightly shorter girl who needed it far more.

"I get it. We all get it, Navi. Just let it out. You're safe here, among friends."

Hypocrite.

Shh, not the time. This isn't about me.

While Navi took a much needed moment Phi stayed nearby, and tried to keep up with everything going on.

"Any time, Ariel. And I do mean that almost literally, just knock first." She said this with a pleased smile, glad the quick search had been at least a little helpful. She then turned her attention to Amy, extending her hand. "Well, Phi, as you just heard. It's a pleasure to meet you, Amy."

Eh, is that.. envy on Nero's face. No, no I must be seeing things. Right?

Phi decided to let that one go. If she wasn't imagining it she didn't want to think about what kind of reaction pointing that out would bring. Instead important new data on the mission needed to be addressed and just as well. It seemed Ariel's instincts were spot on. Even so, that didn't change the fact that they were short on time and the Ascendancy already had a head start. Getting aid from the rebel elements on Plenty in this case wasn't just a good idea, but practically essential. But the route still needed attention. Ashton, Flame, and Samuel now seemed keen on the longer route, with some good logic, however...

"If the usual route to get there fast is blocked, can we deviate slightly, go around? Lots of space out there. Or if the ship has enough power to make a straight line to Plenty? That would simplify things."
"Phi"

Convinced she had made a neutral, low key impression even with her input on the route, Phi found herself blindsided by Navi. It was one thing to have an embarrassing moment noticed, but Navi in particular was pure hearted and tended to lack filters. Phi could have made like it didn't affect her, she was a very convincing performer, but surrounded by allies that level of guard hadn't been raised. Thus she tried and failed to prevent her face turning bright red, her body and expression frozen in that moment. The thought of the doctor and little Navi side by side in pajamas and cute slippers was too much for her unprepared mind. She wanted to see that and now everyone else could probably guess at this embarrassing secret as well. As if that wasn't enough, the headpats of the ridiculously tall Tarak only compounded that embarrassment. Phi knew he meant well but at the same time she could almost hear her credibility as a competent crew member shatter.

All she could do was nod in acknowledgement to Navi, for she was absolutely correct, and then hope Abaddon's lemon squares took center stage. If she stayed quiet for a while, with so many eccentric characters in one place, hopefully their elders would forget about Phi's flop of an introduction. What else could go wrong anyway? Apparently Finn had an answer for that, by turning into a cat unexpectedly. She had to both stop herself from staring, and resign herself to the image the crew must have of her now.

What even is it about animals that makes me want to hold them? I know that's still Finn but now I can't help but want to pet him. A boy who I still barely know, technically. Not creepy at all.

Noticing the latest crew member show up clearly drunk out of his mind, Phi receeded towards the nearest wall knowing full well a certain someone would be having a talking to soon. In order to detach from the conversation and make herself feel a bit useful, Phi began poring through the public information on the longer route. Stops along the way, usual escorts, companies favoring this route, and recent events all along the way. Before hunting down private information this should give some clues to Ariel's question. Phi sent the data as she found it, saving the other girl some tactical footwork.

Hm. I wonder what kind of animal Ariel would be like. For that matter.. ooooh, I just had the most wonderful idea!

Phi's face lit up before immediately catching herself, and her eyes couldn't help but flick towards Avelyn. Hastily she raised her mental barriers before she embarrassed herself in the extreme before the mind reader's powers.
