Bio

Hey all, JB here.

I'm a DM for a large number of games here on RPG, as well as a player in several others. Many of the games I run are overly complex, or they involve Dungeons and Dragons (which is also overly complex!).

I work 40+ hours a week, and am the proud father of two tiny terrors named Chibi and Chibette and married to my beautiful Wifey. As such, I am quite busy more often than not. I typically write 2-5 paragraphs per reply and try to maintain an excellent level of grammar. If you noticed me glancing at your profile, I probably was looking to see if you would be a good match for my RPing style. Even if I didn't send a PM to you, feel free to send one back!

I enjoy 1x1 RPs and small groups. I'm fond of medieval, steampunk, and futuristic settings, and I'll jump into romance, adventure, and slice of life RPs fairly quickly, although supernatural (vampires, werewolves, etc) RPs get old for me pretty quickly. If you're looking for an RP partner and I've glanced at your profile, then I'm most likely willing to give it a shot, but decided against PMing you because I'm actually kinda shy. But I'm always looking for a new friend!

Please feel free to say hi at any time!

((OOC: The shores of Lake Bresha, DM Post))

Julian sat tranquilly, listening to the sounds of the water softly lapping at the shoreline. The fighting had not reached this somewhat secluded area, and it was just far enough so that sounds of battle in the distance competed with the sounds of Cocoon’s particular brand of nature. That was soon to change, no doubt.

As he heard footsteps approaching, Julian activated his Manadrive, sending an arc of repelling energy through his body. This Protect spell should give him a defensive edge should someone do something stupid, but his job was to prevent that from happening in the first place. The combination of the moonlight’s reflection off the waters and the electrostatic glow of the manadrive made Julian’s skin nearly shimmer. He raised his head in time to see one of the Pulse soldiers nock her bow.

“Stay your arrow, if you please!” Julian called out. “We have no reason for bloodshed here. I have called you here to work together, not to kill each other. Our worlds suffer a grave threat, and it’s not from who you think!” Julian slowly stood to his feet, trying to keep his hands visible so neither side would feel threatened.

“I am former Lieutenant Julian Cagle, and I’m trying to uncover the truth. I summoned you all here to help me.” The man pointed towards a nearby long one-story building that appeared to be a warehouse of some sort. “Inside that building is a dying Pulse fal’Cie. PSICOM captured it during the initial invasion and have been performing a series of tests on the thing. I intercepted some communications that might shed some light. It seems this fal’Cie wants to stop the war, not continue it. We need to get in there and liberate or at least talk to it.”

Julian stepped forward to the group from Cocoon. “I personally chose each of you to assist me, even though you were unaware. Kirta, you have a lot of talent with a blade. If you had a bit more self-discipline, you would be Corporal by now. The army is suppressing you, but I need your unique... talents. Our opponents will be ruthless, and we need someone just as aggressive and not constrained by protocol. Madeleine, your job would be to keep us alive and healthy, and provide distractions to the enemy. I chose you specifically for your passion in healing, and to help bring balance to our team.”

He turned around and looked towards the soldiers from Pulse. “You have little reason to trust me, but I feel like I know many of you already. Riya and Nyxia, both of you bring unique abilities that we will need where we’re going: a guide through the wilderness of Pulse, and someone to keep us going when we are far from a supply chain. Noir, you will help us establish contacts in Pulse. Your reputation in organizational skills precedes you. Nadia, you and I both know what happened with your family. I think you deserve to know the truth, don’t you?”

Julian tapped the cane he carried lightly on the ground. “Our window is closing. We must act quickly if we are to be successful. I realize we just met, and you must have a million questions. Let me be clear: I am asking you to desert your posts and join me. I do not ask this lightly, and I swear I will do all in my power to protect each of you. I ask you to join me to potentially save thousands, if not millions of lives, and end this war. I ask you to help me save the Pulse fal’Cie if we can, or gain valuable intel if we cannot. I am unable to do this alone; I am no real soldier.”

The man stretched his arms out to both groups, his posture and voice nearly pleading. “Please, will you help me?”
Drajhan closed his eyes momentarily as a quick wave of pain from his cut flared up. Talking cats, getting smacked by some pretentious woman, and then being told his betrothed was here... not a great day. Oh, also the Gate was destroyed, which evidently was fairly important.

When the dragonborn opened his eyes again, he noticed several of the others rummaging through the bodies of the dead. With a shrug, he pawed at the nearest soldier. He had a rather strong suspicion of who they were, snd the insignia he found in the soldier's coat pocket confirmed his fears.

"As I suspected," Drajhan called out. "These soldiers were minions from House Mirlandisnecht. Followers of the Fiend, and almost as far from home as I. Not to fear: Harriet and I have dealt with their kind before. With some luck, they will fall just as easily this time. Be on your guard, for they employ more devious tactics than the average soldier." He summoned his blade to his side and stepped closer to the group. "I suggest we keep our blades at the ready until we get away from this forest."

Long walk.

There was no reason to talk. The fox wouldn't speak back, most likely, and the quiet was enjoyable. Little noise but the slow crawnch, crawnch of the leaves beneath his feet, and the quiet pitter patter of those ahead of him. Mal glanced up at the pair again and smiled. A beautiful woman with an intriguing air about her was accompanied by a rather young gentleman as they scampered through the path. Both of them had caught his eye, not because they were out of place, but because of how cute their clothing was. Perhaps Mal could take up sewing as his next hobby. Perhaps after stargazing.

They had made camp. It was an odd place to make camp. Little shelter, near the road where bandits could easily find them. Mal didn't mind. He laid down on his back and looked up at the stars before pointing. "That one. I call it Wren," he said simply before looking over to his fox companion. She had noticed something, but Mal couldn't tell what it was. The fox seemed insistent, so he picked her up and set her on his shoulder to go investigate. As he approached the camp, suddenly everything went black, and the sound of feet quickly scrambling on dirt was the only thing he could hear. Mal set his jaw. "I will protect," he said simply. Perhaps they had been ambushed, and some magic user had taken out the biggest threat first. Mal could probably catch up and keep them safe. Once he found his way out of the darkness, he began to jog lightly, his frame lumbering heavily down the dirt path. The fox napped.

There was a city nearby. Lots of loud people clanging their pots together and shouting. That must be their destination. Mal usually avoided cities. People threw things at him, yelled at him, called him things. But if the pair were in trouble, Mal must help. His pace slowed to a walk, however. It was unlikely that the duo had run as long as he had without tiring themselves out. Neither looked very hearty from a distance. Luckily, he saw them just as they entered the city. Mal quickly ran forward and closed the distance. The pair stood out quite a bit in the crowd, so Mal had little trouble following them, just glad they were safe. When they ducked into an alley, Mal slowly turned the corner. At first he thought they were gone, but Wren nibbled at his ear, directing his attention upward. There she was, dangling helplessly from the walls... or so he thought.

Evidently, this alley was the woman's home. The poor girl, having to live in this dirty city. Mal reached up to shake her hand, but it seemed she was just a few inches out of reach. He considered jumping, but decided that he might be more likely to accidentally pull her down. Instead, he figured he would introduce himself in the only manner he knew how.

"I am Mal. You are cute. Your friend too. Need help? I protect the cute."
Draj held a claw to his cheek, more shocked than hurt that someone dare strike him, especially a purported ally. "My dear madam," he responded, his voice lowering to a growl and his eyes narrowing, "I require the respect of but one Lady when I pass, and with all respect due back to you, She is not you. Pray stay your hand before it becomes offered to my Patron and the Raven Queen." Drajhan's face suddenly softened, a smile gracing his maw. "But we are not enemies here. We fought on the same side, and so we should work together. My knowledge lies in the Arcane, not in natural things. If you would strike a child for not knowing the name of this Gate, or of what power it held, then the fault lays not with the child."

The physical assault combined with the young ranger's obtuse refusal to listen to reason were beginning to annoy Drajhan. "I have no interest in speaking more on this subject, Angela. Perhaps we can talk about it again when we reach someplace less tainted by fiends." The draconian stepped back from the great kitten before him and leaned once more against the blood-stained tree. "If what you say is true, Harriet, then I do believe this beast is toying with us. Please, Great Cat, reveal your true self and speak plainly. Are you a god sent to watch this Gate? Or perhaps a man with a fondness for felines? We mean you no harm, and you may have the power to shed light on this situation."
Man, you keep posting interesting things. If you get to where you need one more person and can't find one for a couple days, send me a PM. I can be a warm body.

I'm almost tempted to offer to DM the thing. I may or may not enjoy fucking with my players' heads.
@Corrovax One of the trickiest parts of DMing solo games is that most Tabletops are built around teamwork. In a solo game, you need to rebalance fights around a single party member, ensure an unlucky roll isn't the end of the campaign, and perhaps sllow some extra abilities or items (like allowing them to cure as a bonus / swift action, or make their potions twice as strong).

I would probably suggest OpenLegendRPG.com for a simple system with wide versatility. The game is designed around not punishing failed rolls as harshly. It is versatile enough that nearly any scenario can be created with it. The biggest issue so far, asides from being fairly new, is that there are no enemies created. On the other hand, there is a generic enemy template that can be modded / tweaked with a little effort to do whatever you want. The plus side is that you don't need to spend hours prepping encounters. The downside is that you may need an externsl resource to model your enemies after.

I suppose a question I should pose to you: are you planning to run this on the forum, in PMs, or live through Discord or some other chat program? This greatly affects the ease of the campaign from both ends. If it's PBP, you have more time to think through your end of things. When it's live, you have to think on your feet and have a lot more prep done.

Lastly, I feel like you could combine most or even sll of those story hooks into the same game. A magic-imbued hitman / ghost hunter who destroyed an artifact on the job. Now on the run from whatever's after then, mage-hunters, and a previous job gone bad. Just a thought. I like to keep options wide open in Tabletop games.

I can't say I have time to express interest. I wish you luck, and if you don't get many takers here, you might try the Tabletop section. Probably net a different demographic there.
Alright, sadly it looks like we aren't getting anyone new here. I'm going to have to drop commitment for this in order to make room for other projects. Thanks for the opportunity, and I hope we csn RP together in the future. If you do gain enough people, feel free to send me a PM. It's possible I might still be available.
“I suppose Common is beyond your grasp...” Drajhan muttered. Something about the cat’s glare put the nobleman on edge, and a comment from one of his companions did little to aid his nerves. “My dear Angela, this is no time for jokes,” Draj responded to that ridiculous comment about his betrothed. “I know of no Gillian Houses, and I would assume my betrothed is draconic like myself.” His attention turned immediately to the other stranger among them.

“The Gate? Ah, that thing. Yes, we had no intentions of destroying that Portal thing. In fact, my intention was to help protect it from those fiends.” The final word was nearly spat from his jowls. Drajhan focused all of his attention back to the great cat. “I can only assume you are able to understand us. If so, I express my deepest sympathy and apologies for the loss of your... ‘Gate,’ was it? Your Gate.” The dragonborn lowered his head in a respectful bow. At the deepest point of his bow, he whispered a quiet prayer: “Please don’t eat us.”
@MesonyxOne good thing about DnD is that it's usually fairly easy to add players in as things progress. So if you get less busy, you might want to contact the DM and see if there's still an opening. If so, you might be able to play after all :)

Best of luck on the house hunting!
Hey all.

I spent some time making icons for the RP. Most were copied from the wiki, but then I had to resize them because the standard image resize BBCode seems to be broken here. I created the Air and Earth buffs from scratch using resources from Brave Exvius. Here they are so everyone knows what the icons mean:
