Section #1: Jig Being Right

It has come to my attention, that I am primarily right and drunk.

Jig is completely right.

Jig is right.

[11.01.50] Gowi:

Jig is right. Feel free to send that along.

[Jig is] 100% correct.

Jig was right 8 months ago, and is still right.

I love you, Jig. It's because you're Always Right™.

Once again, Jig is absolutely right about this.

Where is Jig when I need to vent about politics?
Drunk.

The mighty Jig is of course right.

Wink Murder (GM)

Project Rehab (Player)

The Kidnapping (Player)

Wink murder: Who Killed Mr. Jig? (GM)

I've been RP'ing on and off in the Casual section for a few years now (pre-guildfall) but I usually stuck with a group of guys on the old forum I was on. On the old forum, it was generally split into 'Hardcore' and 'Casuals', which are the equivalent of RPGuild 'Advanced' and 'Free'. Hardcore RP'ers generally stuck together and we all had a big thing of making original RP's (usually nation based). It was a bit of a culture shock when all of these guys and I decided to migrate over to RPGuild for good and found that the Advanced section contained Anime RP's (among other things we would never have found more in the Hardcore circle of the old forum). The Advanced section, to me, seems to be a bit of a ghost town and the few RP's that do exist in it seem to be anime/canon RP's, which I have little interest in doing (Star Wars RP's are my weak spot). So I find myself now looking through Casual and Nation's for something interesting that'll let me write a bit and is at least original. I'm having little luck so far. I'm considering GM'ing but with the success rate of RP's on this site so low, I'm not even sure it's worth it.

There's a lot of (justifiable) defeatism here that's kind of self-perpetuating.

If you don't go into the Advanced Section because it's not busy enough, you don't contribute to it or help it to grow into a busier, more active section.

Also, if you won't create the kind of RP you want to be in (for whatever reason), you really aren't in a position to complain that that RP hasn't been created. If it doesn't take off or dies, it's not an idea that's gone forever and been wasted. Put it in the mushroom cupboard, see what grows and bring it back with a better understanding of what worked and what didn't. I think you're exaggerating the proportion of canon RPs in Advanced anyway. Scrolling through the first page of threads, I counted ten (out of thirty) that were probably canon-inspired (I don't recognise a lot of the things that tend to have fans that RP).

Your defeatism is understandable because RPing can be frustrating, but it doesn't actually help your situation.

I don't necessarily believe the "subtypes" would necessarily need a chapter to themselves. I see it more as Chapter One: What is Roleplaying? - Definition 1.1 - Different types like LARPing1.2 - Different types like Text BasedEtc, etcIt coul just branch off chapter one instead of giving EACH little thing a chapter of its own. And the Units I pictured more like: Unit One: Fundamentals of Roleplaying (what it is)Unit Two: Maybe something like Character Sheets and such And so forth and so forth.

I like the almost chronological approach you imply here:

A total newbie sees a roleplay, and their first thought is gonna be WTF. A unit explains this.
Next? How do they get involved? A unit explains this: GM-player relationships and formalities, the process of CS's
Next? How do they write a post? A unit explains this: writing conventions, typical rules and courtesies, approaches (to meta-game or not to meta-game)
Next? How do they interact with other players and push the story on? A unit explains this, etc

Literally looking at the PbP chronological process and addressing each topic as it will unfold.

Clearly this is PbP-based (I presume - I have little concept of other RPing, as previously mentioned)
Another "stating the obvious just in case it goes unnoticed" thought-post.

I think a big set-backs for the model you propose are going to be:
RPing means different things to different people. When I tried to explain RPing to Jig's Very Patient Partner, I sort of fudged together the phrase "Community storytelling in traditional prose format" with the qualifier that each player is typically tied to their own character's/characters' actions. This looks very different to

You said Roleplay - (verb) the act of simulating the thoughts, behavior and actions of a character to interact with other characters and a setting*

and while a typical RP fulfils both of these criteria, having core definitions as you suggest (not a bad idea in principle by any means) to work off relies on those core definitions being foolproof. If I approach submitting content, which will inevitably be based on what I perceive RPing to be in my own specific way, and try to apply models to a definition that I don't necessarily feel is the most relevant or specific to that model, the application is going to feel laboured at best and potentially incomprehensible at worst. This isn't an impossible challenge, but it is a challenge nonetheless. At the same time, editorial rights are surely going to have to be restricted to those people that understand and accept the given definitions, to avoid the above problem, potentially reducing the overall community input through vetting people.

* obviously this example isn't perfect, because you're defining a verb and I, a noun, but hopefully you take my point.
(Incidentally, this post will assume 'subtype' refers to different structures RPs can take, be they MMO, PbP, LARP, etc - a definition to subtype would be helpful for the purpose of this discussion. Also, if I don't otherwise specify, assume I'm talking about PbP RPs since I don't really have much concept of others)

I can confirm that Cat is the winner of Sproingington the Lamb.

My point exactly. If a new roleplayer has a dozen guides to look at, how much help is that? If they have one guide that a large sum of the community seems to support, then the decision is easy and everyone will be on the same page.

You've probably already put thought to this, but, just to state the obvious for fear of it going missed, in the case of one freaking huge guide, then it simply has to be more easily navigable than a chronologically-listed series of threads in the guide section which isn't difficult, but still. Do you have a reference for what the guide might look like? The current wikidot page, bare as it is, leaves most of the format to the imagination. I presume it wouldn't look like a standard wiki/a - otherwise it would be called a wiki/a! :P

With that in mind, I want to set aside information as core 'fact' that all theories we discuss will refer to and we will fit all models to be comprehensive of, then I want to discuss opinions, models, theories and the different styles of roleplay within a subtype and how they might bridge over and connect to different ones of a different subtype, or how there might be a pattern of sorts.

Could you maybe clarify what you mean here? I didn't quite follow.

Fair enough.

It's a shame it's a bad reason. It's difficult for GM's to vet players if they are so inclined, especially new ones with no real post history to speak of or not in the same section as the current RP and so arbitrary quantity standards are imposed, even though quantity is generally meaningless.

It's hard to stipulate 'quality' because that's not really measurable and, frankly, should be taken for granted.
AuntFlavia said She's not, I assure you. But if you think you have problems with your character, it's not like it's to late to fix them.

This. If you're concerned and not happy with her, give her a legitimate character flaw. If you can't think of one, the seven deadly sins are a great place to start.

Btw, next IC post breaks the two page limit. The person that does it will receive a really cute video.
Still not as bad as my quadruple post a few pages back.
Ermagerd, Benji's been drugged and Rikki thinks he's a lightweight. What a bitch. xD

Writing a personality. Asking me to give a few quirks and traits, fine. Two paragraphs describing how my character typically acts? I hate it with every fiber of my being. It sounds simple. But it is not.

Generally a test on behalf of the GM when a limit is stipulated. Can the player write two paragraphs? It's arbitrary and generally pointless, but it's asked for for a reason.

SyrianHamster said You try to explain to them that the world isn't suitable for an anime character, and they take it to mean you hate the genre.

I may have already bitched about this (it's worth a rebitch anyway), but I once launched an RP based on an animé world, but an explicitly and fundamentally 'realistic' version of it - that was, basically, the point. The first post I got was complaining that it wasn't animé.
