Upon arriving on the settlement, Aenwyn took note of the overgrowth of vegetation. There wasn't a single soul in sight and the woods surrounding the village felt foreboding.
She lead her horse towards the stables and set down some of her belongings inside the town hall before heading back outside. She saw Tyr gazing towards the woods. Karl was sitting by on top of the stairs, also keeping watch. Evidently, he volunteered to take first watch with Tyr.
Aenwyn was between the two of them when she spoke "Both of you felt it too? There is something disquieting about these woods. I can't believe I'm saying this but after living nearly a century in these lands, this place feels...alien. You think any of the inhabitants left any clues behind as to their whereabouts?"
Aenwym waited for Evelyn to reply to her theory but there was nothing. An uncomfortable silence filling the room growing by the minute. Finally Aenwyn spoke again.
"I'll leave you to your thoughts Lady Evelyn. Seeing as I am the only one who read the entries, I'll go and tell the others of what I've learned tomorrow. I'll leave the journal entries over here. Good night."
Aenwyn left the room and headed for her quarters. It was an exhausting day and there was so much to think about. So many more questions were raised than answered after reading the journals. Noticing that her window was open and that tonight was particularly chilly, Aenwyn went over to close them. She cast a gaze at the pale moon. It was partially obscured by the evening clouds.
"Blood moons huh?"
She closed the windows and laid down on her bed, quickly drifting into a dreamless sleep.
The next day after eating breakfast and gathering her belongings, she met with the others at the stables. Their horses were already awaiting. It was only a matter of waiting for everyone to arrive.
"Morning everyone. Are we ready to leave? Just to confirm, our mission is to gather reconnaissance on the vampires and it's at our disgression to fight them correct?"
"Tabetha Lockwell? Yes, I remember her. I still have her seal that she left behind tucked away somewhere. I'm afraid I have not heard anything from her either."
Evelyn paused thoughtfully. "When we last spoke, she mentioned that she had not paid respects to her late mother. There was also a mention of a gift from her mother but she did not elaborate any further."
Aenwyn tilted her head slightly. "If she went to pay respects to her mother, then the only logical place where she'd have to go would be ruined city Kal'ras. After all, that is where she grew up. I don't think I'll find much there considering how much time passed, but it is the only plausible lead we have on her."
Evelyn nodded. "For now, focus on the task at hand. We can consider our next course of action regarding Talmaria once the vampires in the vicinity are wiped out. As for the report, I believe it is here. Take a look at it for yourself."
Entry 1 Our group has just passed into Talmaria. The dead forest surrounding the mountain pass remains as barren as the day that monster set it ablaze. We entered the ruins of a village once situated here, hoping to find signs of the missing scouts having camped here. Unfortunately, there were no signs of our brothers and sisters, but the remains of those who perished those years ago.
Entry 2 It has been three days since we ventured into this land. Our night shifts report hearing noises out in the distance. Loris, our mage, performed a spell which he claims would discern what entities stalk us. He found nothing. Namae and Dennic decided they'd scout the area around camp tonight, perhaps whatever is following us is nocturnal. They said they'll return at dawn so now we can only wait.
Entry 3 Morning came and neither Namae or Dennic returned to camp. The group has decided to put our expedition on hold to find our missing brother and sister. I swear if those two went off to go at it I'm going to bash Dennic's head in with my shield.
Entry 4 It has been a whole day since we sent out to find Dennic and Namae and still we find no signs of them. Instead we found a man, he was pale and fragile with thin hair and wrinkled skin. He attacked Bjorn out of hysteria and we managed to subdue him. He kept raving about a prophecy and the blood moons as well as something about vampires. Rhea, our scholar, has no idea what any of it means.
Entry 5 Our group woke up that same night to the sound of screaming. We all came to arms but didn't realize till morning that the man we had captured the previous day had escaped. Our group leader, Edmund, decided it was best to let the man go and to continue looking for Namae and Dennic for a few more days. We only have enough food for a few more days.
Entry 6 We ran out of food. Something stole our provisions while we slept last night. Not only our food but most of our equipment as well. The only thing we had left were our armor and a couple of personal effects. I managed to hold onto a map of the area and we discovered we were halfway into this damn forest land. We decided it was time to head back.
Entry 7 Which way is east?! These woods are eternal aren't they? No wonder no one has seen the elves, this place never ends. Something stole my fucking map last night and now we're completely lost. We had to go hunting since our food ran out and now two more of us are missing. Yura didn't meet us at camp after today's hunt. We can't go look for her or we'll just go further into this damned place.
Entry 8 We found Yura. The day was dark today...but it was noon. Her armor was mangled and it dug into her skin but she wore it still. Her body was decrepit like an undead. Edmund approached and she attacked him. We tried to hold her back but she threw us off and...she ate Edmund. We killed her. She was a vampire. An embvinaire...I'm starting to wish we listened to that mad bastard. We can't stay here, there's only three of us left; myself, Miranyil, and Greirun. We're on the move to what we think is east.
Entry 9 The others came back. All of them. Just like Yura, they tried to kill us. We had to kill them, Namae and Dennic, before we had enough space to make a run for it. We ran for so long the day turned to night. We thought we had lost them so we set up camp. They came for us again. We ran again. Greirun tripped and before we even though to turn and get him, the others took him. God I can't stop thinking about his screams, he didn't stop no matter how far we ran. Miranyil also fell at some point and hurt her leg. We escaped them for now but with Mira's leg we won't get far. If I dont make it I hope this journal somehow finds its way back home. Lucia, I'm sorry my love, I promised I'd be home before first snow but I'm afraid I won't make it. Take yourself and the children to my family in Thanermere, they'll care for you and the children can work in the library when they're older.
"Have you any ideas what blood moons are and this prophecy the man mentions?" Evelyn asked.
"I'm not sure but it obviously has something to do with the moon. Perhaps it is related to the phases of the moon? There are some who say that at certain phases of the the veil between the supernatural and our reality becomes thinner. There is a belief that working rituals at the time of different phases of the moon can bring about physical or psychological change or transformation. There was once a brief time where a minority of the Wood Elves worshiped the moon but that hasn't been in practice for the past two or three centuries."
Aenwyn paused. "Sorry was I rambling? I sometimes lose myself when I talk. It's a pity the man they found escaped. Perhaps he'd have more information. What worries me more is that these entries mention nothing about seeing an elf. Normally, there'd be patrols along the borders and our relationships with Humans are friendly for the most part. Has our our numbers diminished so greatly that we cannot enforce the borders?"
As the Watchers left the court room, Aenwyn was disturbed by the news that vampires were sighted in Talmaria. The Wood Elves were devastated during the war, there was no questioning that. But for vampires to be sighted within, something must have went very wrong in the past 5 years. What happened to the Wood Elves after the war? When did communication cease with other nations? How much of a footing did these creatures of the dark have in Talmaria?
Surely Tabetha Lockwell, a former captain of the Order, would send for aid even if she did "retire" unless there were circumstances preventing them. Aenwyn frowned. She did not expect her return to her homeland to be rather dire. Aenwyn needed to know. This mission just became personal for her.
She walked towards Evelyn Sunderland and gave a small bow. "Lady Sunderland, you've mentioned that you have a report. I would like to see its contents. I've talked with many people since my arrival and all of them say the same thing. Talmaria has gone silent and no one knows where the Wood Elves went. For an entire nation to vanish, it is unbelievable. 5 years ago it would be unthinkable for those creatures of the night to even set foot in our domain. Have you heard anything from Tabetha Lockwell? She is a close friend friend of mine and was once under your command. Last I spoke with her was 5 years ago before she went back with the Wood Elves to our lands."
The last time Aenwyn saw Dustorne, the city appeared ready to crumble down to its very foundations. Now, Dustorne had changed for the better. The city still bore the scars of strife but the reconstruction appeared to be proceeding smoothly.
Before the meeting at with Evelyn Sunderland, Aenwyn spent her time trying to ascertain the state of Talmaria. Five years should have been enough time for some hopeful but all that she learned was that no one had contact with the Wood Elves. This turn of events surprised Aenwyn. Thinking back now, she spent the last 5 years isolated on some island training to be a scholar. For the Wood Elves to not communicate with the other races since the end of the war was very concerning.
With little else to do, Aenwyn returned back to her quarters to gather her thoughts. What were her kin up to? With the discovery of new lands, it wouldn’t be surprising if there was another new continent that sprung up near Talmaria. Perhaps there was conflict in the land? If not conflict, then perhaps the Wood Elves simply wanted to isolate themselves. For what reason then? And what of Tabetha Lockwell? She had returned back to Talmaria. What happened to her?
At night, she and the other members of the Watchers gathered in front of Lady Sunderland.
"It looks like we've both come a long way, care to introduce me to your new comrades?"
"Lady Sunderland, I am Aenwyn Loradi, scholar, at your service."
