Prologue

The Orphanage, late evening

The room was illuminated by a single candle, leaving most of it obscured by darkness. It didn't matter, though, because the most important part of it was clearly visible. The candle sat at the night table next to a bed on which laid the old man who, for years, has been the only parent you knew.

You always knew Fritz as a vigorous old timer, with his clearly defined muscles lying hidden under the layers of clothing as he played the part of a kindly grandfather trying his best to raise his numerous grandchildren. He only showed the extent of his power when someone endangered the Orphanage and in the recent years that has become extremely rare.

But now that strong body that you knew and that seemed so reliable has shrivelled up. There was no trace of muscles on old man’s body, just skin and bones. Fritz was so weakened by the illness he couldn’t even lift himself from the bed anymore. Even to eat, he needed the help of Mary, the oldest of the orphans.

Right now Mary sat right next to his bed, trying not to cry. You and the other children were standing around it. The entire population of the Orphanage was crammed in here. The old man asked everyone to gather because he had something to say, which was in itself a very ominous act.

“Children…” His eyes darted around the room as he began to speak – something told you he probably couldn’t even see who was in the room – and it seemed as if he had trouble breathing. “My time has come. I know that even without me saying, you rea-“ his speech was interrupted by a bout of coughing. It took a few moments for him to continue.”You realize that soon things will become very difficult for you. I tried to make some foundation for your future, but in this world nothing is certain.”

“That is why I wanted to tell you, as my last lesson, to remain united. You are all young, and although there is a lot of potential among you, none of you is strong enough yet to face the challenges of this world alone. So remain together, cooperate, compensate for each other’s weaknesses and you will be able to survive and even thrive in this city.”

With those words he had another coughing fit and this time it was relentless. It took several minutes before Fritz managed to push a few more words out.

“Be –cough, cough – be there for – cough, cough – each other…”

And then there was silence. No more words, no more coughs, no more ragged breathing. Fritz’s chest wasn’t moving. His eyes just stared blankly into the air.

The silence was broken by a piercing shriek from Mary who fell onto the old man’s chest and cried. Other children joined her soon. Very quickly the entire room was resonating with wallows of orphans, orphaned once again.

The Dirt Town

The Dirt Town Orphans RP is inspired by Saints Row games in that it is about gangs vying for control over a city in an over the top fashion. It is also inspired by Dragon Age 2, in that it will follow PCs rise to power and wealth in the city over the course of many years. Final – and most important because it kickstarted the whole thing – inspiration comes from the story of Emperor Kellanved from the “Malazan: Book of the Fallen” novels and how he went from being a tavern owner to being the emperor of the world’s most powerful empire. I forgot to mention in the Interest Check, but The Warriors movie was big influence as well.

The main idea is for PCs to make their own story. I am not going to railroad you into fighting this boss then that boss then another boss. You pick your own fights and alliances. I also won’t create my own PC who will act as the leader of the Orphans – you players will have to sort that among yourselves. I will just provide you with the playground, the sandbox, and it is up to you to make something out of it. Whatever you choose, though, don't think I'll make it easy!

@Zi Can you expand it a bit? Like, why does he think that's his name, what was he doing before being found by Fritz, how does he feel about his life in the orphanage, etc. You don't have to go big as Rune_Alchemist, but a bit more info would be appreciated ^^"

@Rune_Alchemist Nope, not at all. It's great!

I should prolly make an OOC now...
@Zi Of course! I plan to have this permanently opened.
Well, this is an encouraging response after the silence yesterday

I added more info to the first post.

@Blight Bug Nice character!
When I make OOC you can post it in accepted characters.
I added a CS and some relevant world info for character making.

Once upon a time, in a universe far removed from our own, there was a land called Oblivion. In addition to its ominous name, the people of this land have a peculiar way of doing things. Namely, people of Oblivion believe that you only deserved as much freedom as you are capable of taking by your own hands. They called this the “Philosophy of Chaos”.

In this land of Oblivion, there is a city called Yire-Alba. It is one of the great cities of the land. Yire-Alba is a city divided into districts, each district ruled by a gang, each gang led by a person titled Archon. The Archons often fought between themselves in attempt to take control of the entire city, but at the beginning of this story they had been stuck in a stalemate for a decade.

In this Yire-Alba, there is a place which was not ruled by any of the Archons. It was called Dirt Town, and it was the largest slum in Oblivion. Surface-wise it was half the size of the rest of the districts combined but its population was twice as high. It was a terribly crowded place where all kinds of scum and lowlife made their dens.

In this Dirt Town, there is an orphanage. In this orphanage a strange, but powerful old man called Fritz gathered unfortunate children who were left without parents and protected them from the harshness of the world.

Alas, the old man Fritz is on his deathbed and the Dirt Town Orphans – which is the name given to them by the other denizens of the Dirt Town and which the old man Fritz adopted – are now left to fend for themselves.

Will they manage to carve out their place under the sun or will they be devoured by the cruel world of Oblivion? Well, that’s what this story will try to find out!

Name – Beselot Berhe

Gender – Male

Age – 24

Race – Human

Personality – Beselot is a gentle and friendly person. Although somewhat introverted, he is still easy to talk to and he will never rebuke someone’s desire for conversation. He is easy to make laugh and once he does it is void of any restriction. He rarely gets angry and when he does it is not a destructive rage but a subdued desire to right a wrong or find a solution that would benefit everyone.

Backstory - Although born into a minor family of nobles, Beselot has spent most of his early life in the ascetic lifestyle of a monastery. Originally, he was just given to education, monasteries being a cheaper option than great universities, but his aptitude for holy magic was quickly discovered and it has determined his future ever since. As he was growing up in the monastery of Sol, Beselot has learned the magic of the Father of Creation. He refused to rest on the laurels of his natural talent and applied himself diligently to study and training. His goal was to become a paladin of the Sun God, to help and protect the weak. That is why beside his study of magic he trained his body for battle.

After spending nearly 10 years of his life in the monastery, Beselot passed the test for becoming a paladin. He then left the monastery and began wandering the Empire, helping people in need. He fought bandits, monsters, crime lords and many others, but the biggest impression was left to him by what he experienced in a small town called Luge. There, a plague wrought havoc on the populace and in a month two thirds of the townsfolk were dead. The only reason why the spread of the plague to other regions of the empire was prevented was due to the swift reaction by the local lord who quarantined the area. Unfortunately this didn’t help the inhabitants of Luge at all and they were left to their suffering.

Beselot was initially disgusted by the lord’s actions and tried to help the people, but he soon found that his healing magic was not sufficient for the task and without an actual enemy for him to confront his combat skills were useless. He was helpless as he watched the townsfolk wither before his eyes. By the time the plague has run its course only Beselot and a dozen other people remained (Beselot thanks Sol’s divine protection for his survival). This experience was humbling and it made Beselot realize that there are misfortunes in the world that had no easy solution.

Motive – It is only natural that a paladin of Sol would answer the Emperor’s call to fight the Scorn.

Magic Abilities:

Blessings of Sol – Beselot is capable of using magic which heals cuts, bruises and broken bonus - the greater the injury, the longer time it takes. This ability is always active for Beselot. He is also able to create shields for protection. His only offensive magic is a ray of blazing fire. Beselot's sickle is also coated in the flames of the Father of Creation which makes it more harmful to the unnatural creatures, such as the undead and demons.

Combat Abilities:

Dervish’s Dance – This martial art is developed to fight against numerous opponents at once with emphasis on speed and precision.
