Night of the Selection

When everyone had come up to their rooms, Elra set a ward on the hallway with her staff. It glowed gently as she chanted softly. When it was set she went back to her room and put a silver bell on a stand. She left the door propped open a little.

She laid the blankets on the floor and changed form after blowing her candle out.Getting out of the robes was easy, though the collar stayed. She had done this routine since she couldn’t remember except for when the magic forced her to hold her form.

As late evening changed into night, and night moved towards morning the bell rung. Which brought a growl from Elra. In the hall was a man trying the doors to see if any were unlocked. As he pulled a pick Elra pushed the door with her nose, as the Pincess’s door was coming open she attacked like a wolf in night. She hit the man in the back and biting at his neck, growling loud enough that others would wake from the sound.

The blood tasted good and she let the man thrash as she tore with her teeth till he stopped fighting. His dagger had cut her side but not deep. She was not sure if he was dead or not, and she did not care at that moment, she just held him waiting to be released.

She had told them that she was protective, they just did not understand how protective.
Okay, posted. Now to out her secret to someone, maybe everyone.

Elra finally got to the point she could relax as the pair flee. Her horse carrying supplies. She thought that was better than the horse trying to kill her. She knew that some of the group would think of her as being not worth much because she did not go sniff around the vaults. But there had been so many people in there the place stunk of humans even from the door.

She waited to see who would take her as their roommate. She wanted so bad to change form and stretch out on a blanket on the floor by the fire and be free of these robes. Her senses of smell, dark vision, and hearing were better in her wolf form. Most of the time she would feel the vibrations in her body of someone walking on the floor. She would want the door ajar enough to open it.

She asked people, “Anyone wish to have their rooms warded? You will find, I am very protective of my people and their things.” She continued, “If your within the ward at the casting you can pass through it without alarm.”
If you are waiting on me, I think I am okay.

Walked with the group till they reached the vault door. Locked rooms were not her thing, but she followed. She was impressed at the security, but she knew how she would have attacked it. Necromancy. It would be possible to graft a dead finger on live body. If the finger was from a person who had access and the body was of the blood line, If the finger had access in the past. She leaned close to the one next to her, “I think I could defeat that with a fairly low level spell and a little time,” she whispered. She did not want to explain with the guards so close.

“Your Grace, has there been any bodies found or any of your family missing, like a second cousin?” Elra asked. It would not be good for the living person. When the key came Elra poked her head in the vaults without entering. Then looked to her guards and asked where the kitchen was. She pulled her cowl up to hide her face. She was going to get some provisions for the trip. Her horse could be used to carry that. A couple lanterns, flasks of oil, meats, cheeses, breads, some fresh vegetables, and potatoes. She filled her pockets with apples for the horses.

She got a couple blankets, and a nice change of clothes for the Princess and herself. She had asked and they gave, though the glowing wolf eyes under the cowl might have motivated the maids and kitchen staff to comply. She had not stolen, which was important to her. She returned with Servants in tow wih baskets In hand and some food for her hungry quest mates.

She would wait for the others to eat then she would eat. The wolf in her did not want to wait and she was not the omega here, feeding on the scraps everyone left.

Elra said, "Horses don't like me much. So, I'd be willing to fly with you if that would be okay." The wolf in her did not like the thought, but she did not like the thought of the horse wanting to throw her.

Elra smiled at the rebuke suprised there was no fist that came with it. She wanted to state you couldn’t trust a Nobel that was trying to rush you out the door. It was the classic game, I distract you with one hand and bring the dagger to your back with the other. Truth had to be earned in her mind.

Elra smiled at the group, relieved to have the doors open and their wanting to figure out how.

“I don’t think they actually kept it in a vault. As a symbol it would need to be on a display and not hidden behind locked doors,” she said. “I think also that her grace and other may have dealt with that issue or they may know more about who has it then they are letting us know,” she said.

Watch it!! Lol
As someone born in the 1960’s, I think my generation wrote more. I think we read more too. Now it is more Audiobooks and video clips. The attention span of young people has decreased.

I watch my kids and they have a hard time sitting and reading a book at 13. At that age I would have read 3-4 books. It is change and an exciting new challenge.
