I Am Thou: A Persona/SMT Inspired Story

Content warning for brief mentions of sexual assault and suicide. They're no more intense than the usual Persona depictions, but if anyone would prefer these topics not be a part of the roleplay, please let me know and I will modify my character's backstory accordingly.

Name: Katherine Guan

Appearance: A young woman with an air of fatigue. Drowsy brown eyes with moles under them. Long black hair with bangs. Chipped front tooth. Taller than most.

Personality: Relaxed and casual, bordering on apathetic. Quiet. Friendly. Makes connections easily, but has few close relationships. Avoidant. Incredible thirst for knowledge. Doesn’t follow her own advice. Just wants someone to listen to her. Uses the Metaverse as an escape—acts as emotionally and violently within it as she stops herself from acting outside of it.

Background: 17, junior in high school. Raised by her grandmother, who loves her dearly. Doesn’t know what her parents’ deal is. Enjoys playing the bass and is part of the school music club. Best friend is a guitarist named Gabrielle. Mediocre grades; consistently told she’s not reaching her potential by authority figures. Assaulted by a classmate on an overnight field trip freshman year. Attempted suicide. Medicated for depression. Has no idea what she wants to do with her life. Hungry for purpose. Absolutely ecstatic about beating up monsters and learning the secrets of the universe.

Other Information: Goes by ‘Kathy’. Calls herself ‘Mastiff’ in the Metaverse.

Persona Info: Tiangou was the hound of Hou Yi, a mythological Chinese archer. This archer was given a pill of immortality by Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother. His wife Chang’e tried it and floated off to the moon. Curious, Tiangou consumed the rest of it and was filled with a hunger so great he consumed both the moon and Chang’e.

Born to a pair of freelance artists, Silas has always been wanting for money. The Hegemony hasn’t, which is how they can afford such excellent military recruiters. That’s the only way he could afford an education, after all, and a smart young man like he ought to have an education, yes indeed. He bought it. Maybe it wasn’t even a lie; being a field medic taught him plenty, even if the program never did pay for that degree they promised. Years passed in the twin horror-tedium of war. Eventually he had a breakdown and deserted. That rendered him rather unemployable, but the Hek Community Hospital didn’t ‘employ’ so much as they ‘took anyone who could work a scalpel’. Still, he enjoyed his time there. Helping people he wasn’t sending right back into the line of fire felt pretty damn good. Good things don’t last—the hospital got bought out and stopped taking the bulk of the clientele’s insurance. Silas quit. He was still an idealist at the time. Then he found out how much mercenaries pay medics and compromised a little. He’s spent the past five years patching up various ne’er-do-wells and managing the addiction he picked up working at the hospital. He just wants to feel good for once, be happy for once, and happiness is nothing more than goddamn brain chemicals, right, so here’s a shortcut: psychedelics. Maybe he did turn into his parents.

Silas got his share of the Cerberus through an acquaintance of Jackev’s. He’s cautiously optimistic—can’t end up working for a shitty boss if you own part of the business, right?
