It didn't used to take so long to recover. When I was younger I was told a kiss would make it all better. These days, by that logic, I'd need to be a porn star.

Might not have internet tonight. Travelling into an area I don't know well. My wifi hub may not have cell towers to use. Should move by the next day though.

Work is a little nuts. Long days, little time off. Going to be a little slow on replies. Bear with me.

Bio

Well, I USED to have a bio. Site keeps changing and it goes poof each time.

Welcome to Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, CA - Home of Champions and Scholars. It is one of the biggest high schools in the nation, and has sent numerous alumni to stardom (see the wiki link).

This is a story about the New Kid at a prestigious school. He will be among the invisible crowd - or so he hopes. But as the story progresses he will find himself forces more and more into the spotlight. He has no love interests. (He is quite straight.) He has literally just moved to California.

His schedule will be in his bio.

Your character can come from one of several walks of life. However, it is unlikely that Duncan will notice the shy girl. Like most guys he is pretty clueless about hints or being gazed at from afar. If you want to go this route you will need an NPC or two to help out. Even then, it is unlikely he’ll be interested. He is extremely driven in his goals. High school is more of a distraction.

Compared to all the other students of this fine school, my character’s schedule is ridiculously light. Music (Guitar), Keyboard, Theatrical Arts, etc.

Duncan is a LOT smarter than he lets on. (He’s already graduated, but being forced to endure mainstream schooling.) He stays so busy that he is hard to get to. There is a rumor that he is gay. But that was started by a cheerleader he ignored. He is not the bully sort. The team is pretty well behaved.

@Avanhelsing PM'd you.

Shadows and Reflections is a Modern Fantasy, with some elements of horror. (How much horror depends on how much you screw up.) The NPC, Eric Blackwell, will select potential employees based on what he thinks Alex needs. He has adopted the role of an older brother, giving boxing lessons, teaching how to get on a motorcycle without getting pinned under it, stuff like that. Now he figures Alex is old enough for girls ... LOL. So, any GUY turns in an application, he tosses it away. If they call, he takes their info and says he'll let them know ... So much for being an equal opportunity employer ...

It goes without saying that finding some girl that looks like a Barbie doll princess with black belt in Karate, master of kendo, that can also cook and clean, fix cars and can stand being around a guy literally afraid of his own shadow ... is not likely to be found at MIT. Eric may have to lower the standards just a little.

This is a story about being the new kid in school. It is a story about bullies. It is a story about cliques. It is a story about peer pressure. It is a story about family. It is a story about relationships.

Welcome to Albuquerque Academy (Grades 6-12), an independent, co-educational school. (The wikipedia link will tell you nearly everything you need to know. I have made a few changes though.) The costs to parents is over $24,000 per year per student.

Its football team was 3-6 last year and could barely field a team. In 2015 they moved to a 3 team league. That league has been disbanded and that are back in a league with several teams. It is likely this will be the last year for the football team. If you look up their state championships, that will give you an idea of the sports that get all the support.

Lower School (Grades 6-7)
Middle School (Grades 8-9)
Upper School (Grades 10-12)

It is Fall 2020 and you are a student in the Upper School. (You do NOT have to start at 10th grade. My character will be in 11th. He is 15 and about to turn 16 in late Sept. Yes, he finishes his senior year at age 17. He doesn’t even have his driver’s license yet.

Course Listing
aa.myschoolapp.com/ftpimages/109/down…

Courses are not limited to what is in that list. For fun, I am adding Equestrian (must have a family life that allows for a place to keep a horse, Mares and Geldings only at the school). They do have a Ropes course if you look. Geology is being added. This is not a very large school. Class sizes are small. They have to justify the use of a teacher’s time to keep a class open.

Compared to all the other students of this fine school, my character’s schedule is ridiculously light. Music (Guitar), Keyboard, Theatrical Arts, etc. Creative Writing is his toughest course. He has no course requirements, unlike most students. (He has his GED, though other students won't be aware of this.)

Most students are REQUIRED to take certain courses and even have summer reading assignments. You generally have to sign up a year in advance.

My Character

Duncan is a New Kid in School, transferring from the public school system, and looks more than a little rough around the edges - literally. On the first day of school it looked as though he had been mugged by a gang or in a very bad traffic accident. He wears a single fingerless glove on his left hand and walks with a limp. (His left hip is messed up.) Socially he is withdrawn. He hovers on the edge of groups or rooms and observes. That may just be the fact that he’s new. He’s always scribbling stuff in notebooks.

On the plus side he is enrolled in Advanced Guitar. But he is taking none of the usual core requirements. The closest things he is taking to an English class is Creative Writing. He is taking Theatrical Arts. For PE he is mostly on a waiver.

He is NOT the popular kid - or wasn't at his last school. His older brother and sister were though. He had the joy of walking in their shadows. He has no fashion sense.

Note: He doesn't like some blondes, and avoids hispanics like the plague.

Your Character
This should be a girl. You can be a well established student, having gone there all the way back from 6th grade if you like. Or you can a New Kid yourself. If we don't start Day 1, it will be up to you whether your character actually started at the school day 1 and had the chance to find a social group and join clubs.

I am debating on exactly when to start the RP - Day 1 ... or a little into the semester after cliques have formed.

Please contact me via PM if Interested. (Please use the Subject: New Kid.) I am old enough to be a grandfather to characters like these. But I still enjoy the genre. I am looking for a writing partner that has enough life experiences to be looking back at these years - not in the middle of them. I do prefer this RP to be done in PM, but I am not looking for a bunch of smut.

By 25 he held a postgraduate research position at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. UNM is better known for its medical center, but as New Mexico is known as the Energy State, it should not be surprising that it covers other disciplines like geology, metallurgy, astronomy and engineering.

Duncan travelled back in time from the early 21st century to late 1939 through a time portal of his own invention. More specifically he travelled to Albuquerque, NM for this is where he was from in the 21st century. New Mexico became the 47th on Jan 6, 1912. (Arizona was 48th in Feb.)

Duncan stands 6’7” tall, athletic build, steel blue eyes, nearly black hair. He walks with a limp in his left leg, and a glove on his left hand (covering a scar where his hand was sliced in half lengthwise). The other injuries aren’t as apparent. He is clearly very, very educated. And he couldn’t support himself without wealth.

Upon his arrival he first arranged for his records and identification, legitimate as far as anyone could tell. Then he arranged to purchase land, built a ranch, an airport, and some labs and fabrication plants to the north of the city.

For the past 3 years Duncan has been living in the past. He has thrown himself into his research. He hired men to run his airport and fabrication plants. The research labs are more for his personal use. He has taken flying lessons and has an interest in aeronautical research, engine designs, and some fields that have no names yet.

After Pearl Harbor in 1941, the US entered the War. New Mexico had the highest volunteer rate. They were among the first into the war and had the highest casualty rate. The Navajo Code talkers started here as well. Duncan, however, did not go and get in line to volunteer. Truth to tell, he’d have a rough time passing a physical.

Enter the Lady.
This is your part. This is a very open position. But your main character should be one that will turn the head of this man. (He’s almost 28 now.) Boring won’t do it. Shy probably won’t do it either.

The Plot
About an hour and a half drive north of Albuquerque is Los Alamos, birthplace of the Atomic Bomb. In about 6 months Site Y will be opened up and the local peoples displaced by eminent domain and the Second War Powers Act. Duncan like to go fishing in the Jemez Mts, just 10 miles SW of Los Alamos. He also likes to check out the construction of the new Kirtland Airfield and related sites.
