Fyror watched the man’s expression as Jeanette informed him of the Cargast attack in Hyde Park. A startled look crossed the man’s face and understandably so. With the sheer magnitude of Jericho’s barricade at thirty feet high and twenty feet deep with a single entrance it provides the near perfect illusion of safety. Though Fyror had no doubt that it had its flaws, and the Soulless have surely found them. That is assuming they weren’t already here, biding their time in the shadows. These Soulless needed to be dealt with before they multiplied and became too much to handle. After all, these walls could not only keep others out but also keep everyone in.

The man began to speak up but paused as he did a once over Jeanette, apparently noting her unusual choice of attire. Fyror’s jaw tightened the slightest in annoyance. He caught Jeanette’s glance in his direction out of the corner of his eye. He was glad that she didn’t seem too bothered by the man. Fyror was furthermore relieved when they weren’t met with any opposition and the man led them to his office.

Fyror followed alongside Jeanette into the man’s office. The man sat down at his desk and pulled out a ledger. “Now, please, tell me what you both know in full detail,” he stated after dipping his quill in the ink. Jeanette promptly began explaining the ordeal they had witnessed. Fyror listened to her explanation and was ready to provide any added details or fill in any gaps.

“The victim was a young girl. It was a seemingly random choice, though once the girl is properly identified perhaps we will have more insight on the matter. The Cargast, in the form of a thick fog, started to head deeper into Hyde Park. It had plenty of potential victims and ample opportunities to attack once more, but it didn’t…” Fyror filled in the gaps and openly deliberated on what it could mean for the people of London. His face fell and his body stiffened as a horrible realization hit him. “Maybe it was sending a message…We can’t deny that these Soulless could be more intelligent than we first thought. After all, they were once human.” He glanced over at Jeanette before looking back at the man. His face revealed his genuine concern over the given situation. He knew that there were surely dark times ahead.

Fyror’s gaze appreciatively took in the interior of Brunswick Chapel of Ease to St. Maryle Bone as he followed alongside Jeanette. The exterior of the chapel certainly did not do it justice for the beauty and peaceful atmosphere within. The architecture was well thought out and the walls and high ceiling were adorned with detailed paintings. People were coming and going, some civilians, some workers, and various clergy.

His arms relaxed at his sides, and he felt some of the tension from the hectic past hour drain from him. Being a hardened soldier coupled with having an innate protective instinct quickly left him on edge and seemingly standoffish at dark times such as these. Yet something about a holy place such as this brought about a sense of comfort and safety, and he was certainly grateful for even a moment’s reprieve.

He was glad that most of the people seemed too busy to take much notice of him and Jeanette who needless to say stood out in most public places. His scarred face and discolored eye and her choice of clothing that was completely contrary to social norms were hard to miss. At the moment, he decided not to entertain that thought and instead focused on the task at hand: reporting the Cargast attack in Hyde Park to someone more capable of handling it.

Jeanette suddenly made a sharp turn and headed for a man that stood out from the rest. His attire and manner suggested that he worked for the chapel, and yet he did not appear to be a clergy. Jeanette disregarded any formalities and went straight to the point. He noted that she talked in a low voice about the Cargast attack, likely not wanting to incite panic within the chapel. It was a smart move on her part. He admittedly found she had many admirable qualities. It was truly a shame that people judged her for her appearance without really getting to know her.

Fyror and Jeanette’s ride to the Brunswick Chapel of Ease to St. Maryle Bone was slowed by the stream of people fleeing Hyde Park. They scattered across the dirt roads as they most likely headed for the so called safety of their homes. Truthfully, Fyror found it to be a misguided idea that the place you hold most dear is the safest place to be. He knew all too well that tragedy has a notorious habit of disrupting the moments you feel the safest and happiest. He bared the price of that knowledge on his mangled face.

Within a few minutes, the hackney coach arrived at their destination. They came to a stop in front of the moderately size white chapel. The sounds of an organ being played and a choir singing filled the air as the coach door was opened. Fyror was about to exit the coach and lend Jeanette a hand getting out, but she quickly fled the confines of the coach before he could. His eyebrows shot up in surprise. What was that about? Surely, it had nothing to do with his presence. He exited the coach soon after her. He thanked the coach driver before turning back to Jeanette as she spoke. He smiled at her comment. “Certainly. Lead the way Miss Crane,” he added and gestured towards the church.

Fyror was pleased when Jeanette so gratefully accepted his help boarding the coach, and he easily returned her smile with one of his own. Apparently she had a specific church in mind that she wanted to inform about the Cargast attack in Hyde Park: Brunswick Chapel of Ease to St. Maryle Bone. He entered the hackney coach once she was safely inside. He took the seat across from her as the coach door was shut. They were soon on their way to the nearby church.

His gaze was soft as he looked at Jeanette, and he listened attentively to what she had to say. “Thank you for understanding. With the sudden presence of the Soulless in this city, I am truthfully afraid to leave them for too long. My brother is a skilled solider, but fighting humans and fighting the Soulless are on two entirely different spectrums. Nevertheless, I do not regret staying by your side and ensuring your safety,” he replied. Truthfully, he found that he quite enjoyed her company. To have someone who viewed and treated him as an equal rather than inferior was refreshing to say the least. He looked out the coach window for a moment, his gaze taking in the passing terrain.

Fyror solemnly watches as Mr. Connolly carries the lifeless woman away. He prays that no more innocent lives would be lost, but he had a sinking feeling that his prayer would not be answered. He returns his attention to Millicent when she speaks once more. His gaze lingers on the mark on her face, still angry that someone would dare have the indecency to strike a woman. It was improper and malicious to do such a thing.

Just then, Mrs. Wyndham bellowed out from the second floor window of the manor, causing him to look up sharply. His jaw tightened as her hate filled words struck a nerve. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time he had been fallen victim to the woman’s prejudice, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. The woman was the farthest thing from proper and such a poor role model for her daughters, whom she wished to marry to proper, titled men.

Fyror’s gaze went back to Millicent as she spoke in a disheartened voice. She vaguely gave a reason to her mother’s actions, and he had a feeling she only did so to prevent her family from looking more a fool. Ultimately Millicent was much different from her mother. She was respectable and showed less prejudice, to which he was grateful.

“Thank you, Miss Wyndham,” he stated in response to her providing a hackney for him and Jeanette. He gave a slight bow in farewell to Millicent and Virginia before turning to Jeanette. “Certainly,” he replied to her first question before addressing the coach driver. “We are headed to the nearest church, then we shall head back towards Hyde Park.”

Fyror turned to offer a hand to Jeanette to help her into the coach. “My family is staying in an inn right by Hyde Park. I must get back to them after we are finished with this task,” he responded.
