Maybe he get's the ability to work them into a spell but outright copying I don't think so. Also it should take at least a little more effort since he has to create a spell rather than just outright copying it.

We're getting a lot of anti-heroes so yeah that might be best.

There's ways to make a character relatable and flawed without them being an anti-hero :P
