I think you're severely underestimating the lack of resources/materials that comes with literally everything being torched by nuclear fire, and then deteriorating over 200 years. You're also probably overestimating how smart the average wastelander would be considering very few of them would have access to even the simplest form of education. I think it is safe to say the games have a lot of guns only because it'd be boring otherwise. Realistically, there wouldn't be much to go around.

since the advent of high capacity very accurate man portable firearms notwithstanding

The introduction of modern firearms made them obsolete

None of which are common in a post-apocalyptic world.

As far as we know, only the NCR has the capabilities to produce those kinds of firearms. Besides, I prefer style-points and things that are just plain cool to read about over dick-waving about who's got the best guns and training. It makes for a better story when it's something more dynamic.

As for the suggestions: No, thanks. I'm not trying to be Don Quixote.
The comic All Roads by Chris Avellone - one of the lead designers for the Fallout games, and compiler of the Fallout Bible - shows that horses are very much still around.

Here is a picture of said horses in the comic.

Considering that NCR is very well-off, with as many as hundreds of thousands living in NCR (formerly known as Shady Sands) alone, I think it is perfectly acceptable to assume that horses have been bred. Why would the NCR give their soldiers the last few remaining horses on Earth without breeding them first? They probably wouldn't. The fact that they are seen on horses, I think, is proof that horses were bred and used as cavalry.

EDIT: Just read the link you provided. Their argument against it is "it's probably a mistake". That is a bad argument.

EDIT2: Read the trivia and Avellone admits it's an error. Welp. 'Guess I'll show myself out. Not sure how interested I'd be in playing another unit that is more or less the same as the rest, and going with horses despite canon would probably bug me too much.
I may have gone a bit overboard with the General's origin story, but it's not too bad. It looks really long, but it's really not. It's an easy read, I think. I'll have an insignia for the army soon.

I see...

Well, then. I guess I should get working on my own sheet.
I did read all of it. I just did again, and I'm still not getting what you mean. Is 'the U.S' referring to the Enclave, or what they called their community? Regardless, you'd still be off by about 200 years.

Note the bold:
Upon discovering the Enclave, the soldiers happily obeyed their directives until 2080, when under the constitution a presidential election was to be held.

The current year is 2282.

Maybe I'm missing something cleverly hidden, but as I understand it, he'd have to be over 200 years old to have attended an academy, survived the nuclear war, and met the Enclave afterwards.
It's been about 200 years since the bombs fell, Boerd. Unless your dude is a ghoul, there is no way he's still around.
I'll be back soon. But you shouldn't need me around to post.

I think Vilage is going to like to see someone else who likes politics more than war. Welcome aboard, Byrd. It's about time we have someone competent at the reigns of the good ol' USA.
