Chrono Asylum: Prelude to Madness

“Sheesh.” Zane muttered in disappointment as he turned to the closest student that was limping away from him. “I put all that energy in to get warmed up and you all can’t even hold on long enough to make the effort worth it.” The man sighed and kicked the student in the back which caused the teen to topple forward. Crouching down towards the teen Zane pointed the blade of his shield at the student’s face and spoke in a harsh tone towards the student. “Even if you are in a losing fight, never show your back to your enemies. Rogues love to pick at any signs of weakness and as an Asylum you must not let your resolve waver in combat.”

Zane felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see his partner who carried a concerned look on her face. With a sigh the man stood up and the two Asylums headed towards the others.

’Did you have to be that harsh? He was just a kid.

‘He lost that title the day that he was brought here.’ Zane said as his body started to revert back to its original size. ’There will be plenty of people including you to mentor and encourage them towards graduation but my intention is to give them a taste of the harshness they will come across once they leave.’ The two Asylums stopped as they reached the others. Zane continued as Geko chastised the students. ‘Who knows, this route might lower the casualty rate of the first year Asylums wi—‘

Feeling a sudden shift in the room Zane halted his conversation and instinctively reached towards his back and rested his hand on the hilt of his axe as he watched the interaction between Geko and the girl.

’Do you know who she is?’ Bella said, opening the duo’s telepathic link to Cici as she studied the girl with curiosity. Suddenly the peripheral of Bella’s vision pulsed a light brown and the ground began to shake.

Before the pulse completely disappeared another flash of color, this time a few shades darker than the first color, appeared at the bottom of her vision. Instinct kicked in and with a flick of her wrist two bots the size of a dice buzzed out of her backpack and hovered three feet over the women’s head. A live feed from both cameras appeared in her vision as she quickly searched for any danger surrounding her that might have caused the sound that triggered the flash.

“Distant explosion below. No immediate danger.” Zane said, quickly informing his partner of the source of the noise.

Bella gave a slight nod to her partner and her posture relaxed as she listened to Geko’s request. ...shall we?... The voice from Bella’s glasses said to those around her before the duo started to run towards the source of the explosion.

”...Argument...bleeding guard… plane prisoner…” Bella informed those that were running with her. Sending her bots ahead of the duo, the woman was able to get a few extra seconds of information before they approached the scene.

”I understand your frustration however why don’t we take a moment to chill before you shoot his face off.” Zane said approaching the guard. ”Think of all the paperwork and the mess you would have to clean if you escalated things.”

This was her moment to shine.

It had been a rocky start since becoming an Asylum two years ago. Between their high failure rate with missions combined with her partner’s lack of interest in finding more work to better their performance it has been hard finding a way to stand out other than the unappealing nickname given to her team that has been circulating within the auditing department she joined two months ago. However, she had a feeling within herself that things were changing for the better. They were able to complete their last two missions flawlessly and waiting for them upon their arrival home was an invitation to Innocence.

She was certain that this was the push her team needed to finally make an impact.

‘Isn’t this great Zane!’

Even though Bella conveyed her thoughts telepathically to her partner, her excitement could easily be seen around her as she gave a slight nod throughout Tabion’s speech. Her thigh length beige cardigan was just short enough that her fingertips could be seen rapidly tapping against her legs as she gave off a slight smile on her face.

‘Zane? Can you hear me?’

Her smile vanished after not hearing a response from her partner. She glanced to her right towards Zane who was wearing a dark grey flannel shirt along with black tinted sunglasses-- glasses that he wasn’t wearing when they first arrived.

‘Seriously? You better not be doing this at a time like this....’

The response Bella received was a single light snore from her partner who through intentional training throughout Innocence has mastered the skill of dozing while giving off the appearance of being alert.

‘Why now? This is so embarrassing.’ With Bella’s pale complexion it was easy to see her cheeks becoming red. As Tabion finished his speech and walked away Bella gave a swift kick to the side of her partner’s leg with her ankle length boot which was made for fashion rather than a pair of AMRO issued boots.

Interlacing his fingers and stretching his arms above his head Zane gave a loud yawn before slowly scanning the area. His gaze stopped at his partner who was now turned towards him and visibly frustrated. “What?” Zane said nonchalantly as he gave another yawn. “It’s not like I missed anything.”

“...you promise...no sleep… so why sleep?” A feminine voice said from Bella’s glasses. Being deaf, Bella’s main form of verbal communication came from her glasses which has been the bridge for her to the hearing world.

“I said that I would consider behaving but I never promised you anything. Besides, the question shouldn’t be why sleep?” Zane said as he took his sunglasses off and stored it in his pocket. “The question should be why waste my time when there are better things to do. Tabion’s speech was probably the same old motivational speech that has been copied, jumbled around and then pasted with a pinch of creativity if we are lucky so what’s the big fuss about tuning out bits and pieces of it?”

‘Zane, please don’t. Let’s not cause a ruckus.’ Bella shook her head no as she moved their conversation telepathically as she glanced towards the Tabion and a prisoner that just got off the plane. She wasn’t sure who the man was but he seemed vaguely familiar from the paperwork she had processed in the past. Even with her slight curiosity she was certain that she didn’t want to be near him seeing that he was in chains.

“Fine.” Zane said with a shrug before walking towards Geko. “Are you here to give us an encore to the spectacular speech we heard or are we free to go?” Zane said to the lost number with Bella in tow who purposely stayed two paces further away from Geko compared Zane with the hope that the distance would be enough to avoid any antics he might come up with.

“... Sorry for Zane… rude behavior.” Bella communicated apologetically.

Skylar is equipped with projectiles, tracking beacons, anti-achemecy substance and explosives and between missions can be modified to add or take away different capabilities (will be brought up to the GM prior to any changes). Skylar is primarily used as surveillance, long range weapon or a shield but when close range is needed Bella tends to shape it into a glaive. In dire need Skylar can be set to self-destruct which also releases anti-alchemy substance within its range.

Glasses: Although her glasses are not needed for sight Bella’s glasses is a tool that was custom made for her to provide assistance due to her being deaf. Reinforced with AMRO technology her lenses are made to be very durable while have AR like capabilities that can be controlled by Bella’s voice and eye gaze as well by her left hand due to an implant. Her glasses have live captions and text to speech capabilities to aid her to hear those around her and as her main form of communication outside of her telepathic communication with Zane. Her glasses have recording capabilities, thermal imaging, translation capabilities and when within range can access A-O. There is a simple AI that she can direct her questions or commands to named Dot.

Alchemy Specialization: Metal manipulation: Bella can shape and move metal within eyesight

Appearance: Standing at a mere 4’10” and weighing 90 pounds, Bella is far from being someone that appears to be threatening. She has a very slender build and her lack of curves might cause some people to think she is a few years younger than her actual age. She has shoulder blade length brown hair that she typically has in a ponytail and long bangs that frames her face. She has brown eyes and wears large round glasses. She has a very pale complexion that tends to burn easily in the sun.

Bella’s style of clothing tends to lean more towards being fashionable than practical such as wearing a lighter jacket since only because it matches her dress rather than a warmer one during winter or wearing flats on missions when sturdier footwear would be more appropriate. This habit has gotten better since leaving Innocence with Zane frequently bugging her about practical clothes-- and being present when she is packing for a mission.

Personality: Bella is someone who tries hard to act friendly towards others. She does her best to see the best in others and tries to get along with her peers even if their personality might rub her the wrong way or if she doesn’t agree with their opinions. During Innocence she was notorious for being very shy but since graduation has been working hard on her confidence and being bold enough to start conversations with others that she might not know well. Since it can take an extra second or two to create longer phrases with her glasses, Bella tends to use two or three word sentences more frequently.

Growing up weaker and falling behind her peers for as long as she could remember up until her mid-teens, Bella was someone that pushed very hard to keep up with her class. This drive has continued throughout her adulthood even though she is now on equal footing with her peers and has caused some people to see her as a workaholic. She struggles working with others who don’t take work seriously or are late.

Bella has the ability to talk but rarely chooses to do so due to feeling self conscious of her voice since her speech tends not to be clear and hard for others to understand her if they are not familiar with her speech. When she has no choice but to speak she tends to stick to short responses such as “yes” or “no”.

The Lion’s Shield: When not in use Zane’s shield is the size and shape of a half dollar coin with a lion face inscribed for the heads side and Z inscribed for the tails side. When in use the shield can attach to his left forearm and stretches the length of his forearm. The shield is rounded and has a sharp edge that is laced with anti-alchemy substance. The shield is tapered near his hand which allows him to stab someone if he were to punch them with that arm. When the shield is at its full size the inscribed lion is shown on the face of the shield.

Alchemy Specialization: Body enhancement: Zane is able to make his body into a living weapon by enhancing his body to become stronger and very durable.

Appearance: Given how lazy Zane is during his free time it can be a surprise to some that he hasn’t shown any signs of losing his muscular build which he gives credit to the strain his body receives from using his alch-spec. This strain can also be seen in his skin which is rugged similar as if he spent most of his life working outside. His arms are covered with light scars from past battles and he has a large diagonal scar across his back. Zane has copper shaggy hair and a well cared for beard.

Due to alch-spec causing him to grow larger Zane tends to wear custom clothes from AMRO that can grow and shrink to match his current size. Unless he needs to adapt his clothes to fit a mission he tends to wear a darker solid colored flannel shirt with a v-neck t-shirt underneath and darker colored jeans or black pants.

Personality:
“Do what you will to me. Burn me, cut me or break every finger and toe I have to try and make me talk. I’d love to see what fun creative ways you have to torture the information out of me. But I warn you that you, your family and anyone you value in your life will be begging for death if you hurt her. Hell, I’ll go after your dog if you make her shed a single tear.”

On a typical day Zane is a laid back man who enjoys a simple life with frequent naps or being lost in his thoughts and rarely signs up for extra work. He is someone that tends to speak calmly even in a state of distress and rarely holds back his thoughts or opinions. He tends to lean more towards pessimism but states that he is being a realist.

Zane is an open minded individual who enjoys learning how others think around him and learning why they choose their answers. His open curiosity can come off a bit strong to some and sometimes a bit argumentative when he plays devil’s advocate. However this openness tends to cause him to be willing to change his opinions if he is given a good counter argument that he can agree with. When riled up enough Zane does have a temper that he isn’t afraid of displaying.

Although Zane’s words can be a bit blunt at times, he is someone that genuinely cares for others. Zane will fight with all he has and even is willing to use his body as a shield for others. Since befriending Bella in Innocence he has been overprotective about her wellbeing. Some say that his alignment isn’t towards AMRO’s cause but rather being a sword and shield for Bella.

History: Being the oldest brother of three younger siblings, Zane frequently was the one helping his mother with his siblings after his father left when Zane was seven. He would be the one helping out with homework, scaring off bullies at the playground and making dinner when his mother had to work late to make ends meet. He took his job of protecting and caring for his siblings seriously.

This all ended when Zane was fourteen when four rogue alchemists came to his house looking for his father. While protecting his family his surge occurred, giving him the strength to kill one of the rogues and injure another. He was saved by a pair of asylums who were tracking the rogues but his family were dead by the time the rogues were apprehended. After this incident he was brought to Innocence.

Other: Zane has failed the final test at Innocence four times and has been one of the few failed students that came out unharmed. Some of his teachers believe it is because of his laziness and not doing well in school while others claimed that he intentionally tried to fail.

Not exactly new but after three years it looks like I have a lot to relearn

Life has changed a lot since I was last here. I got a lifelong career rather than just a job and am in love with it, got married and bought a house.Somehow during my adventures, three years went by and I’ve nearly forgotten about this hobby. I was reminded of the Guild yesterday by a friend and now here I am.

Even after a three year hiatus, roleplaying is a hard addiction to completely get off of...

I originally joined the Guild in 2011 and was somewhat active both in the old and new guild. During that time I spent my time in Casual and Advance and with a few 1x1 during that time.

Since my departure I haven’t been in a roleplay so I’m fairly rusty and all the lingo used here is now foreign to me so I’ll be working on relearning everything again.
