I'd make it party-based, but I'm kind of into the idea that everyone would be their own character with their own motivations doing their own things independently or not, like Mount and Blade Multiplayer but with less hacking and more complex NPCs.

Well, firstly, there's nothing wrong with semi-generic fantasy by any stretch of the imagination.

If it were me, one thing I'd seriously consider doing is making everyone part of an organization that sort of requires them to work together but lets them maintain their own reasons for doing things. The two easiest ways of handling this? "You are mercenaries" or "You work for the Adventurer's Guild." Sure, these ideas may not come across as especially imaginative, but if you need people to travel around a fantasy continent together, there's little better than a common thread with a loose set of expectations (player characters can contribute to a group of fighting sorts in some way; player characters are expected to travel; player characters probably want money or fame for some reason).

Which is another thing, how would time be handled in an open-world rp that takes place in a landmass about the size of the British Isles put together? It would take a long time for people to travel between some places, and there would be no definitive party, so timeskips would throw each individual's continuity out of whack.

I think you've chosen the best solution by shoving everyone into a group. What you could do, though, is run this as a few separate game threads and link the events together in some way. You don't have to worry about time as much, and you CAN always have a timeskip happen in one thread to catch it up with the others if you choose, perhaps asking the players affected "What did your characters do in this time?"

For example, character A and B are on a quest to find a holy artifact for their church. Character C is a swashbuckling adventurer who's just going wherever the wind takes him. Well, Character C goes and ticks a dragon off, and the dragon burns down a village. Characters A and B are behind, so you timeskip forward as they finish their current adventure. Rumor of a dragon attack reaches Characters A and B, and they now have a chance to link up with Character C, or interact with a place he's already, uh, set ablaze.

I don'w know how appealing that idea is to you, but if I had a lot of time to dedicate, that's how I'd go about it. But, again: you've already figured out the best way of handling this, which is "Shove 'em in a group and hope for the best."
Wow, that one actually drove me nuts when I listened to it. I stopped at around 1 minute in, haha.

But it's probably still better than listening to Barbie Girl when you're playing first person shooters.

(Yes, to be clear: this IS music I listen to when I'm killing other players on super violent games.)

4 or 5 times a week would be too much for me, so I'll step out. It's very possible that I can post that often, but it's also just as possible that college will rear its ugly head and bite my time in half, leaving you with... well, a deadweight player. I don't want to be a deadweight player.

I'll bow out. Thanks for responding in a timely fashion, and good luck with this roleplay! Again, this looks really fun.
My favorite part about the Peace March was when we killed those INSOLENT, TRAITOROUS WHELPS that brought such offensive germs to our Glorious Leader's demonstration of peace. Ne'er again shall such filth sully this place! Glorious is the Glorious Leader! GLORY FOR THE GLORY THRONE!
Aaaaaand posted. I'm just going to assume she gets on her suit and all that and wait for details about it to crop up later.
Angstbomb, mysterious and brooding as always, sulked. He did it because that was what he was good at. In fact, it was the base of his powers. You could tell him it was dumb, that it was downright stupid, but he would not care. In fact, he'd glower at you and mutter curses in Fey as he did. The boy just wasn't right. If he had only possessed a sunnier disposition and dropped the anti-conformist image, he'd be a male model in no time. The fashion biz went gaga for Elves and pretty boys after all.

His head was still throbbing with pain from hitting it on the marble floor after their benefactors little outburst. As people began to move from the table to freshen up, he pushed his hands into his pockets and began to move towards his room, hood dragged over his head to give him the air of a "troubled" person.

It did not stay there long.

The weird reptilian beast from earlier jumped in front of him, its face only a few feet away from his. Worse, it was intent on looking right at his face. Not that it could be blamed: he was, of course, a multidimensional treasure. But it was bothersome nevertheless, and the scaly, feathery thing had an optimism that was absolutely stifling.

"Hey!" squawked the creature. She spoke loud enough that it knocked his hood back and made a mess of his hair. "Hey! Why so down? Need to talk?" The raptor tilted its head this way and that like some sort of crazy bird. "You look mopey, which really is a shame as there's quite a lot to be thankful for, like our FIRST JOB AS A SUPERHERO TEAM!"

The optimism was really stifling. Little bits of spit flew out from the overeager monster's wide open mouth as it roared those last few words in a sing-song tone. With each droplet of Dino-spittle, the waves of positivity washed over him like a tidal wave cooling down lava. The poor fey was the village trapped between the two forces of nature. His eyes flew open wide and he almost fell backwards. He stared at those teeth. They looked awfully sharp.

"Get away from me you... you lizard!" He cried out. "Ughhhhh!" He mumbled and regained his mopey mood as soon as he averted his eyes from the overgrown creature. "You are blocking the way. Can't you see I am busy?"

"No, I'm not!" the raptor insisted cheerily. As Angstbomb stepped on forward, she stepped on backward, keeping an even pace with him as the two went down the hall. "And no, you're not busy, either! I mean, your legs are busy, but the rest of you isn't."

"I am deep in thought! Obviusly. Uuuughhh." Angstbomb insisted, furrowing his brow. The creature hadn't even flinched at his insult. What was she, to stupid to care or too cheery to register the venom of his words? She was an ugly bit of sunshine in his gloriously dark existence. His eyes narrowed. "Scram!"

"I think you are just a little confused," answered the clearly feather-brained dinosaur, holding up a single talon. "I," she began, "am Raptora. I'm your teammate. We're going to be working together to beat some villainous behind!" She demonstrated just what she meant with a kick at the air and a violent squawk, then continued stepping on backward in the same direction as Angstbomb, much to his chagrin. "Plus, I've been genetically endowed with knowledge of various principles of warfare. Did you know, for instance, that most battles are won or lost before the fight even begins?"

"LEAVE ME ALOOOONE!" The fey burst out suddenly, shooing the Dinosaur away best he could. "Can't you see I am being deep?!"

The dinosaur paused in her tracks just for a moment. "Not really, no," she answered in an honest tone.

"But," she went on as she took a backwards leap, "you should really do something about that negativity. Battles are won with confidence and morale and stuff. You should work on that." She paused again, then suddenly transformed again right in front of him, body twisting about and popping as she became a tall, dark-skinned woman.

"That's your door, by the way," she added with a grin, pointing at the one right beside hers. "See? I wasn't in your way at all!"

"I... What... I..." His eyes blinked, he looked puzzled. Why was she smiling? Why did she insist on smiling like that? As a murder-lizard she was at least cool and scary. Now she was just, just happy. That wasn't right. Angstbomb rolled his eyes. "Whatever." He stormed past Raptora, not dignifying her with another word.

For her part, Jessica stood outside the door a moment, nodding to herself. Several seconds after Angstbomb had gone into his room, she finally went into hers. "One step at a time," she mused as the door started to shut behind her. "We'll have a well-adjusted team soon enough!"
I'm interested, very interested, but since I don't know how often you want this thread to update I can't dedicate just yet.

So, what sort of In-Character activity amount are you looking for? I'll be upfront and say that the best number for me is "1-2 times per week." Anything more frequent than that would make me a risk factor. I neither wish to slow down your roleplay if you want folks to post once a day or the like, nor do I wish to say "I'll try to keep up" and be unable to (since that kills roleplays).

Should your players avoid playing historical figures, or was that something you were hoping your players would try?

Do you want submitted characters to avoid having certain skillsets? For instance, do you want them to NOT be super well trained Spartan warriors? NOT be a member of the CIA? Etc.

Again: I'm very interested, but I don't want to say "I'm in" until I know if I'll be a good fit for your RP.
First off I apologize for not being on yesterday. My better half's grandfather went into the hospital. By magical being think of Greeco-Roman divinity. For the most part, everyone is nice fleshy humans, but there can be a case of a demi-god or the likes. Nothing over the top that will impact how everything goes but to add flavor mostly.

Think middle to late bronze age. Iron is coming out of its shell but the dominant metal of the time is bronze. So needless to say who ever has that resource can market it for a pretty penny. There will be events that will allow you do adopt that particular fashion of metal working as time goes.

As far as turns go it depends. You'll only be able to move armies so far and spend so much money on both civil and military means. How exactly I'm gonna do the turn change I don't know yet. But if anyone wants to make a suggestion or put in their two cents, I'm all ears.

I hope your grandfather-in-law gets better. To his health.

Okay, so we won't be seeing anything like nymphs in the woods or genies in the desert? No occasional dragon floating around? I'm assuming stories like that are told, but some folks think they're fairy tales.

My only comment on when to end / start turns is... Well, it's that you've got a lot of options. The two easiest ways to do it would be either

  • A) Start new turns after a certain allotted amount of real-world time, such as "weekly" or "every Wednesday and Sunday," etc.

Or...

  • B) Let everyone post their actions before moving on to the next "turn."

Of course, neither of these options if perfect, but those are the two most general, most easy ways to go about things. You'd still need to work out how to handle inactivity and such, etc.

China had a printing press. Martin Luther's era had the movable type Printing Press.

Thanks for the info! Just looked that up. Okay, so it's a very different type of printing press than the sort that changed Europe, but it's a thing. Cool.

So, part of me wants to try putting some pieces of the puzzle together, but it's probably too early to do that. There's monsters popping up all over, there's priests of ancient, evil deities roaming around, there's necromancers and undead legions...

Yeah, I can see why I was asked NOT to make a beastman or undead creature.

I'm enjoying reading everything. I really want to see what happens with Flint and this dragon business.
