Yumi almost tripped as she ran and cackled to herself. The stunned look on Aramis' face had been priceless, much better than she had expected. She stopped and leaned against a tree trunk for support as she fought to get her laughing fit under control.

As the giggling began to subside, Yumi glanced back to their vantage point and watched as Aramis made his way toward the turkeys. Despite giving him the bait and ditching him, she wasn't actually going to abandon him. Her laughter returned for a brief moment, though, as an image of him being chased by giant turkeys flashed through her mind. I should do something nice for him after this, she thought to herself as she admitted to herself that this prank was perhaps a tad mean, but between the three of them, this should be a breeze. She held her scythe ready in her hands in case things took a turn for the worse as she silently followed behind him at a distance.
Yumi had been listening quietly, her chin propped on the top of her scythe as Locke surveyed the fields and Aramis laid out his calm, methodical strategy. The sunrise, the drifting petals, the golden light over the crops, created a surreal scene when you considered that their enemy was, in fact, a herd of enormous poultry.

However, when Aramis gestured toward the bottleneck and said,
“It could be anyone, really.”

Something in Yumi's expression changed.

Her eyes narrowed.
Her posture straightened.
And then — slowly, deliberately — her lips curved into a small, unmistakably wicked smile.

“Oh?” she said softly, reaching into a pouch on her belt.
“A–ny–one?”

She rummaged for a beat.

Then she produced…
A small cloth bag.

She untied it with a flourish.

And the strong morning breeze immediately scattered the contents: seeds, cracked corn, dried berries, and other assorted turkey delicacies. A few petals drifted past as the grains glittered in the sun before tumbling down the ridge.

Yumi’s smile widened.

“I was hoping you’d say that,” she said, tone far too cheerful for someone about to weaponize bird feed.

She hopped lightly to her feet — scythe in hand, posture still favoring the hunter she’d once been — and nodded toward Aramis.

“You lead them through the bottleneck,” she said, as if this were the simplest thing in the world. “Nice and steady. Don’t get trampled. And," she locked eyes with him, her expression absurdly serious, "don’t get eaten.”

Her gaze flicked to Locke next.

“You wait at the ambush point. Once they charge past me, I’ll cut off their retreat.”

She dusted off her hands, entirely too proud of herself.

“That way we can surround them, and nobody has to be bait.”
A pause.
“Well. Except for the corn,” she finished with a devious smile at Aramis.
The world spun sideways as Yumi hit the ground.

For a moment, there was only sound — a deep, throbbing roar that might’ve been the mammoth, or the blood in her ears. She tried to stand, but a pain like she’d never experienced exploded in her right leg and side, a white-hot fire through her bones. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. She gritted her teeth hard enough to hear them grind as she held back tears. She had had some lingering doubts about the reality of her situation, even when she had felled the mage, but the cruel absence of a pain absorber here swept them away, leaving her with an undeniable fact:

This was not a game.

This was real.

Yumi’s fingers clenched around the haft of her scythe. The handle trembled in her grip, slick with sweat as she pulled herself up to stand on her good leg while leaning against the weapon like a cane. Through the haze, she took in the situation: Roscoe unconscious, Androph and Evie battered… and Aramis in bad shape. A sharp inhale hissed through her teeth; as much as she wanted to help the mage, she had nothing in the way of healing. Only thing I’m good at is killing. The thought echoed solemnly through her mind. Her eyes fell on Evie, whom she had seen use some sort of potion. She’d have a better shot at helping him, she thought. However, before she could move, the beast’s trunk rose, coiling toward Evie as the behemoth inhaled hard enough to start dragging her toward it.

Her body moved before she could tell it to.

She bit down on the scream that wanted to tear free from her lips as she ran toward the outstretched trunk. Her injured leg buckled slightly, almost giving out, but she drove the spike at the end of the scythe’s haft into the ground and pushed off the ground with her good leg, using the handle as a makeshift vaulting pole to leap high into the air.

Yumi used the rotating momentum of the pole vault maneuver to swing the scythe around, rotating her in midair. As she turned toward Evie, she looked her straight in the eyes, then at Aramis, then back to Evie. The exchange was less than a second, but Yumi’s urgent, desperate message was written across her face, plain as day: I’ll distract it; help him.

Then she rotated past, and the scythe connected.

Yumi landed hard, nearly collapsing as her wounded leg buckled, but she forced herself upright, scythe leveled, chest heaving. Blood filled the air — though whose it was, she could not tell. Her stomach lurched, her vision swimming, but she stood her ground, trembling, but refusing to fall. She glared defiantly up at the monster and shouted, “Oi, debu! Kocchi da!”

Yumi's eyes widened slightly as the mammoth materialized, then quickly narrowed again as she tightened the grip on her scythe. As the behemoth charged, she noticed Evie charging toward it and swinging at its foreleg. A scene from an old movie of a very similar situation flashed in her mind, giving her an idea.

"Umaku ike…" she muttered to herself.

Yumi mirrored Evie by charging toward the beast. She slid under the tusks and ran between its legs to the rear. She grunted slightly as she planted her feet and swung her scythe, sweeping it around in a circle as she slashed at the mammoth's hamstrings.

Yumi's head turned ever so slightly to look at Aramis over her shoulder as Kavros offered him power. Her piercing blue gaze was tinged with a combination of curiosity and worry. He didn't seem like the type to be swayed by an offer like that, so she was curious to see how he turned it down. At the same time, though, she didn't know him all that well. Her assessment could be wrong, and she worried about what she would have to do if he accepted the offer.

Her apprehension quickly dissolved when he calmly turned down the offer. She gave him the faintest hint of a smile and nodded ever so slightly to him before facing forward again.

As Evie gave out instructions to the party, Yumi nodded again, her eyes narrowing slightly as they locked onto Kavros. She calmly brought her scythe up to a ready position and prepared for whatever was about to happen.
Yumi kept her distance as they ventured through the labyrinth at first. Close enough to observe her new companions, far enough that she could breathe. Unless spoken to, she didn't say much of anything. Old habits didn’t die easily, after all, and after so much time alone, it was hard to get used to travelling with others, even a group this small. It made her recall...she shook her head, dispelling the bittersweet memories dug up by that infernal mage. While she barely knew these people, something seemed almost familiar about them, something that reminded her of home, but she couldn't put her finger on it. In any case, they weren't trying to kill her, which was a great comfort.

Whenever they made camp, Yumi nibbled on her rations and sipped from her waterskin, just enough to get by, never once complaining about the taste or it not being enough. She was all too familiar with the consequences of running out of supplies in a dungeon, and she had survived worse with less. She would always sit near the main entrance or exit of their sanctuaries, such as they were, whether she was on watch or not. Whether awake or asleep, her scythe was always in her hand, ready to respond to the faintest hint of danger.

Sleep came lightly, in snatches, like a slumbering lioness. The faint scrape of stone, a breath drawn too sharply, the shifting of boots on damp ground — each sound tugged her back to waking, her hand already tightening on the haft of her weapon. The labyrinth’s silence was never empty; it pressed close, humming against her skin, filled with the echoes of things that might not be there. Her mind constantly drifted back to the memories the mage had brought up, but she continually hid them behind her stoic demeanor.

When they finally reached the throne room, Yumi maintained her silence. She glanced down at the wickedly curved blade of her weapon, grimacing slightly as she remembered Evie's directive to take their target alive if possible. Non-lethal wasn't exactly her strong suit. Nevertheless, Yumi stood slightly behind Evie, opposite Locke, her right hand ever so slowly lifting the scythe off its hook on her back and letting its weight settle comfortably in her hand. The enormous steel talon curved behind her, not threateningly, but ready if needed.
Yumi froze a fraction of a second longer than usual at the end of her swing, the scythe hanging low to her side. She hadn’t flinched when the blood splattered on her face, which remained stoic, but the whiteness in her knuckles as her grip tightened showed she was unnerved. Her stomach twisted as her gorge rose, and she doubled over as a dry heave shook her frame. She closed her eyes as she barely managed to keep it down, forcing herself to steady and slow her breathing.

Yumi regained her composure after a few seconds. She straightened up and opened her eyes, her face slightly pale but calm. She swung her scythe once, flinging any remaining blood off the edge before returning it to its place on her back. She reached down, dipped her hands in the water, and rinsed the blood off her face. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly before turning to see how her new acquaintances were doing
The faintest shift in the mist caught her attention. Her head turned almost imperceptively toward the irregular ripples bouncing off her ankles, causing her eyelids to open ever so slightly. The unmistakable sight of a faint shadow against the surface of the water caused the hairs on her arms to stand on end as she forced herself to stay motionless.

Her fingers tightened silently around the haft of her scythe as her eyes followed the shadow, every muscle taut to the point of breaking. The bastard was circling like some big shot that had his prey where he wanted it.

The faintest smile curved the corner of her mouth. He had no idea she was the furthest thing from prey.

The silence shifted, the same way it had before the shards had flown toward her and Aramis. Her eyes snapped fully open, a twinkling pair of sapphires locking onto the direction the sound came from. She charged through the mist toward the sound’s origin, leaping to close the distance. The muscles of her torso relaxed as her lower half turned in preparation. The blade of her scythe flashed as the momentum from her coiled swing brought the steely talon around in a perfect circle, right on the point she had detected movement, her knees bending slightly as she landed in a low crouch.

Yumi's grip tightened on the haft of the scythe, the supple leather creaking lightly. The mist wrapped around her, swallowing her up in a world of whiteness. Every splash from her footsteps was painfully loud in her ears, every ripple in the viscous liquid telegraphed her position.

So she stilled.

Holding out a hand to the side, she glanced at Aramis behind her and placed a finger over her lips. The mist continued to shiver with sorrowful memories conjured from the depths of the past, reflecting off her cobalt irises. Once, such visions might have unsettled her—but they no longer did. The mage wanted to drown her in grief, to cloud her mind, but sorrow had long been her companion, and it would not claim her today.

The water lapping at her ankles rippled once more, then settled as she rooted herself in place in the cold, unyielding water. Her eyes closed, her breathing slow and even, letting the mist and memories swirl around her without affecting her. She let the darkness sharpen her other senses. Every drip of water from the pillars, every faint stir of the fog against her skin, every subtle shift in the chamber was a message she could read.

Yumi had hunted men long enough to know how to wait in silence. She let the mist curl around her, the sorrowful visions swirling uselessly against her calm. Every heartbeat, every whisper of water, every ghost of motion was a signal she could interpret. The mage may have cloaked himself in illusions, but hunters do not chase phantoms — they strike when their prey reveals itself.

And when that moment came, she would be ready.
