I think I should write a pithy roleplay about how an expenditure of effort does not entitle you to your perception of an equivalent reward. Anyone know someone who'd be interested?

Okay, let's be honest for a second here, if we stop the status bar from being edgy angst land it really doesn't have anything going for it except sheer autism.

Kasumi's onslaught could hold back no longer at this point. She would be forced to act viciously and attempt to wear down Shio's defences in order to move in for the kill, or her attacks would greatly reduce in efficiency. At this point, Kasumi's higher terminal velocity and already existing speed would allow her to at least try to catch up to Shio, though she could not run for as long as Shio could, and as she and her two Mirror Images began their full-speed sprint towards Shio, Kasumi and her images launched their fiery spells.

Three fireballs, two of which were six feet wide and one of which was three feet wide would be launched at various positions around Shio, the two from the illusions travelling to cut off her west-bound path without an extremely sharp turn or a translocation ability - and Kasumi was not aware that Shio had any translocation abilities. They were spaced far enough apart that their explosions would blockade off any westbound movement without damage or proccing Shio's Unyielding Defence. If she was to create Earth Walls to block the Fireballs, it would block off her route for escaping, and being southbound would be her only option. The real Kasumi would unleash her Fireball simultaneously, beginning to charge Cinders of Kyokujitsu as she did, barrelling it directly towards Shio. The explosion would catch the Ocalia if it hit, and Shio would certainly not be able to endure the damage without pain - enough pain for Kasumi to react and end the battle.

Kasumi's greater initial speed and higher maximum would allow her to catch up to Shio relatively quickly, pegging the distance between them at 20 feet after a second, and she prepared herself for her next barrage of spells. In order for her next plan to work, she would have to goad Shio into using her defensive spells now before her true onslaught began. Gen continued to chase after the Ocalia in a single line, keeping its pace moderate and ready to change at any point.

Kasumi's usage of Pyromancy was not without its drawbacks. Normally, she would be quite content to sit back within the mist and wait for her opponent to simply make a mistake but Shio was not the kind of opponent who acted without strong reasoning. Shio would primarily react to whatever Kasumi threw at her, which left her very little room to outplay her. It was simple enough to prepare her initial assault, however easy it may be for Shio to use the situation to her advantage.

Producing another Mirror Image, Kasumi and her clone moved out of the mist simultaneously, the Mirror Image mimicking the path of the prior Mirror Image at a sharper angle in order to get closer to Shio, while Kasumi moved out of the left of the mist in order to prepare to unleash her own spells. The pair of images moved at a relatively quick pace, ten feet per second, and moved in exact reflection of each other. Kasumi was very capable of moving a great distance towards Shio quickly, but she would have to be certain that she could create a situation in which a deathblow was possible immediately, else her Gishiki and veritable close-range combat skills allow her to best the assassin. She did best when taking out targets in a single fell swoop, after all.

Simultaneously to the emergence of Kasumi and the Mirror Image, the Gen began moving at a moderate pace of ten feet per second towards the Ocalia, Ghost Knives in hand and ready to be used. It was a risky manoeuvre, but Kasumi's offensive chances would be very limited. If Gen could get into close range of the Ocalia, it could very quickly end the fight of its own accord. Shio's magic was primarily defensive, so it was easy to assume that she would not attack the Gen without strong reasoning - her being offensive would leave her more vulnerable to the oncoming pyromantic assault (which was something Kasumi was confident could end the battle) and her being defensive would allow her multiple windows of attack to create a new assault.

Kasumi also had the added benefit of being able to create a new zone of control with her Hydromancy at any point, but that was going to be a tactic best left for emergencies.

After Kasumi's brief mental lapse, she felt much better. Her earlier hallucinations about the fountain's location were likely indicative of her not having stolen anything within the past hour - she made a mental note to steal Caelyn's wallet and make him undress to get it back. That sounded like it would be fun.

Now, fully focused on the battle, Kasumi did two things - first, she created a Mirror Image and had it use two Deceptive Bolts to begin charging illusory Pyromancy spells as it did so. It would strafe out of the mist along a simple arc, keeping its eyes on Shio and her Ocalia, while visibly charging two spells - a Cinders of Kyokujitsu and a Lesser Fireball. It would probably be obvious to an observant opponent like Shio that immediately moving out of the mist that Kasumi had just created would be a bad idea - but it was also known that Kasumi's use of magic was very aggressive - perhaps unwisely so. It would be up to Shio whether or not to think of the mirror image as a real threat. Kasumi herself was also charging two Pyromancy spells of her own - a Lesser Fireball and a Pyroclastic Torrent. She would be able to use the significant zone control abilities of her spells to manipulate the battlefield to her advantage if Shio did not adequately counter her abilities. She was confident in her own skills, but Shio had sacrificed many of her social skills for intellectual and battle skills. It would be challenging to beat her - that much was certain.

Simultaneously to this occurring, Kasumi's Gen made a set of five Ghost Knives, and though it did not initially move, it was prepared to move at any point. Kasumi was preparing to enter into melee combat with her Gen, and to provide enough offence and defensive cover in order to allow her Gen - which had significantly better chances in melee combat than most equivalent Natrelmon - to do what it did best: Pound enemies into dust.

Kasumi began the battle in a similar position to Shio - the fountain was used a centerpoint to put the total distance between them at 60 feet, 30 feet between each of them and the fountain. The diminutive form of Gen was stood directly behind the fountain, five feet in front of Kasumi. Both she and the Gen were prepared to make the first move, and as an initial precaution to allow them a higher area of offense and defence, Kasumi created a Veil of Mists around herself. She could use her Pyromancy or her Invocation magic later - for now, she had to allow the battle to progress slowly. She was confident in her Gen's ability to take out a melee target, given that she had a spiritual bond with it, but she knew that Shio was very adept at physical combat herself, as well as fairly skilled in Magic. She did not know whether or not Shio possessed the Enyo family's signature school of magic, and assumed that she did to be safe. Her Gishiki would be very powerful if she managed to use it effectively - and Kasumi had no doubt that she would - so she simply bided her time and waited. Shio would be forced to make the first move.
The sight of more newcomers walking through the portal was a comforting one - it meant that Kasumi would hopefully not have to offer too much of her blood. She had read up on the nature of some of the world's more... Unpleasant magic during her youth, and she understood the most basic of premises surrounding the nature of ritualistic blood magic. It seemed fairly obvious that the more people to offer their blood, the easier it would be to break the seal, but the sheer age of the construct that had risen before them left many doubts surrounding how much of Kasumi's very basic knowledge was applicable. As she held out her hand, the blood from her recent cut dripped slowly into the lifeless sands, seemingly imbuing it with some form of sanguinary pulse. That was good - it meant that the magic was strong. It would need to be strong, she thought, as she looked upon the black gate before them.

"It is, isn't it?" Kasumi noted, turning to Zaria, before taking the knife and throwing it directly towards her. It would not stab her if she did not move, nor would it miss her - it was a throw designed specifically for her to actually catch the knife. She would need to use it in order to participate in the ritual. She figured that Caelyn would hold out his also-cut hand and join them, at the very least. The others... Would perhaps be hesitant. She could perhaps inspire them to offer up their blood willingly with the threat of them offering it unwillingly if they didn't.

"I have more knives, if anyone needs one. If you don't want to participate, well... It wouldn't be a blood orgy if I didn't cut you a little." She called out, half smirking and half deadpan. It was a confusing look, to say the least, and while it certainly had a more humourous tone, it was quite clearly not a joke. Participation in the ritual would be mandatory if any of her new-found partners wanted to escape the desert unwounded.
Following suit, Kasumi stepped through the portal. She could feel the familiar thumping in her chest begin to quicken, her blood coursing through her veins with renewed vigor. It was this thrill that she truly lived for, the feeling of taking destiny into your hands and making it your bitch. As she stepped out of the light that the portal was comprised of, she found herself in the darkened desert, presumably near Ivlser, though she could not see any signs of civilisation nearby. This must have meant that they were quite a way out in the desert. She quickly assisted Caelyn in moving the body to the Yata-Garasu's desired location, before sitting down on the cold sand. She released her Soelbe from its relic in order to stay with her, the two Globes of light that accompanied the ghost offering a sharp constrast to the light of Indolu that bore down from the sky.

"Yep. Now we wait, studmuffin." She chimed in, agreeing to Caelyn's statement, while she surveyed the area around her. While the general area seemed not to have any distinguishing features, the fact they they had been brought to a desert left a few options open - it was most likely, Kasumi reasoned, that whatever it was they were looking for (presumably a prison of sorts) was buried beneath the sands. The matrix that the Yata-Garasu had invoked had seemed to be particularly complex and, if Kasumi could explain it in a word, ancient. It was unlikely that they had been bought to this patch of desert in order to look for something. It seemed most logical that their current location was directly above whatever it was they had been intended to find.

"If you make it out of this alive, I'll let you do what you want with me 'til the sun comes up." Kasumi laughed, continuing to pick her nails with her knife idly. She didn't particularly enjoy being made to sit still, but the action would resume soon. She was still full of adrenaline, and though it was no longer ramping up like it had as she walked through the portal, it was still at a high enough level to keep her particularly on edge. This was easily reflected in her posture and the intent with which she was playing with her knife - the wet blood dripping from her hand did not seem to be bothering her at all.
"Not the only thing that's dripping, studmuffin." Kasumi laughed, deftly slicing her right palm open, placing it against the wall, and placing her palm on Caelyn's. It was something that she had long-since been trained to do without hesitation. While she felt pain from most things, having been trained not to get hit rather than to weather the storm, the sensation of a blade running across her hands was a lesson that she had long-since learned. Even in her youth, Kasumi had displayed an exceptional talent for knife skills, and her first couple of months attempting to master the practice of throwing her knives accurately had resulted in more bloodshed than she'd like to admit - it was simply a part of growing up how she grew up.

Caelyn's attempted feign was not something that went unnoticed. Kasumi, as a war veteran, had long-since learned many lessons, and not underestimating one's opponents had been among the first she'd had to learn. Violet had helped with that, many years ago, and now those lessons were still catching up with her and affecting her judgement in many ways. Perhaps, had she been a bit more naive, she'd have fallen for Caelyn's ruse of incapability... But as things stood, she was cautious, though she too had a plan to put into action. If that meant playing into the impressionable young man's hands, it meant playing into his hands. Squeezing her own fingers around his, she turned to him and gave him a coy smile while she waited for the magic to work.

She had the utmost faith that what she was doing would be best for her - and the idea of being wrongfully imprisoned by a corrupt judge was something that had oddly struck a chord within Kasumi's mind. She was not one for politics, or philosophy of any kind, but the idea of such power being sealed away seemed like a terrible waste. At least, that was her spin on it - morality did not enter the equation, which was perhaps going to be a point of contention within the others in the near future. Only time could tell, she reasoned, as she squeezed Caelyn's hand slightly.
Nodding as soon as the Yata-Garasu gave its instructions, Kasumi pushed the trolley containing the deceased doctor's body to the location that the Yata-Garasu had asked her to. The nature of the morbid task was not something that Kasumi had particularly noticed, in all honesty - having fought in the war as an assassin, she had performed a great number of questionable deeds, and sometimes her kills had sided more towards the vicious side than towards the efficient and painless side. It was something that most people in the war had either gotten accustomed to, or had suffered for through PTSD. It was just the nature of warfare, Kasumi supposed, and even though the war had been brief she had learned and lost an awful lot in its duration. As a member of a high noble family, the call to war had sought her out rather quickly, and it had been her familial duty to respond.

"I do have a few questions, if you don't mind," Kasumi started, striding forwards and sitting on the end of one of the unoccupied trollies in the room. "What exactly are you? I've done my fair share of reading, and I've never come across anything like your power. Not that it really matters at this point - I have the utmost confidence that you can pull through on that reward - I'm just curious." Kasumi asked, picking one of her nails with the tip of her knife as she did so. While it wasn't an inherently threatening gesture, it was quite the sombering reminder that Kasumi was extremely skilled with a knife and more than willing to kill.

"Oh, Caelyn. I expect you to go down on me for so long that you have to make like an Armkfish and evolve gills." She smirked, turning her gaze towards him with a wry smile on her face. It was quite easy to get Caelyn to blush - as she'd found out earlier - and that was sure to set his face off into a rush of crimson.
"The next time you touch me, you'll lose a hand." Kasumi commeted as Caelyn went to touch her damn-fine booty, having been telepathically informed by her Mythari that he was going to attempt such an act of debauchery, but she did not prevent him from fondling her. She could appreciate the fact that he appreciated that her buttocks were among the best he'd ever feel. There was no point in having the goods if she couldn't taunt people with them, after all! The little patch of ice was nothing that she couldn't handle - part of achieving relative martial mastery and having completed years of endurance training meant that her stride was very difficult to break, and though she certainly noticed the ice, it was nothing that her feet couldn't bypass without even showing a hint of having known it was there.

"I apologise for Caelyn's barbaric behaviour." She added, a hint of seriousness creeping into her voice as she focused more fully on the task. Noticing that the Yata-Garasu had indicated that there might be a time limit in play, she sped herself up, before quickly breaking out into a sprint. As a Touhou, it was Kasumi's namesake to be extremely fast, and she shouted back to the Yata-Garasu that she had inevitably just overtaken.

"I'm a Touhou. It's our namesake to be fast. You lead me to the morgue, and I'll get you to that body - and I'll kill anyone who tries to stop me. Sound good?" She called out, obviously quite enthralled with the entire situation. It had been very interesting since the very beginning, but now she had gotten a taste of a tangible reward for her assistance and the tumblers had locked into place. She was more than eager to learn whatever ancient secrets the trapped being had to offer, especially if those secrets pertained to new magic or to long-lost treasure.
"... You need to work on your priorities, studmuffin. You're surrounded by a horde of undead Natrelmon that are probably going to decimate the city, stuck with a member of a high noble family in a hospital surrounded by even more undead Natrelmon... And your question is "Oh my god how can you talk?!"? You need to get a grip, sweetheart." Kasumi replied, her Gen hopping on to her outstretched hand, then onto her shoulder, and finally on to the top of her head, in order to get the best vantage point possible. Two sets of eyes, one curious, one obedient, looked out towards the Yata-Garasu before Kasumi stepped forwards, shrugging her shoulders as she did so.

"Count me in. Anything powerful enough to cry out for help by raising an army of the dead is something I'd certainly like on my good side." Kasumi noted, walking towards the raven as if to follow it. She was fully aware that Caelyn, seeming to have a bit more of a sound moral compass, may well decline to help the creature. It practically reeked of "evil" as most would call it, but that had never stopped Kasumi from doing whatever it was that she wanted, and it had most certainly never stopped her from indulging her inhuman levels of avarice. While the thrill of the chase was something that she would go as far as to say that she lived for it, the prospect of a reward that a being this powerful could provide was also in her top three priorities.

"You don't have to help if you don't want to, studmuffin. Just know that I'll kill you if you try to stop me." She started, turning around to wink at the impressionable young man, before turning back and starting to walk with the Yata-Garasu. Mythari hung slightly behind, watching cautiously to check to see what Caelyn would do while Gen turned its gaze forward, surveying the area ahead.
