How does that cause dire straits?

It’s a saying. It just means you’re in a bad situation.
<Snipped quote by Valiance>

Dire straits?

If it is a painful change to their very being.
<Snipped quote by Valiance>

Yes, I can see how it would sting. I don't think it should destroy you though.

It shouldn’t. But in dire enough straits, it can.
<Snipped quote by Valiance>

*Nods*
But it doesn't mean it was worthless. You would have grown as a result, even if you don't like who you were.

But you do see how it can be extremely detrimental to the concept of identity, yes? Even if changes like that can be for the better, they can often hurt.
<Snipped quote by Valiance>

If your data set changes, wouldn't everything you build on top of it change too? It doesn't seem like something that would shatter someone.

If your efforts up to the point where your mind was changed were suddenly rendered either meaningless or even against your new view, would you not be disgusted with yourself? Especially if it’s in regards to something drastic?
<Snipped quote by Valiance>

Why do you think that is?

It can shatter a person’s entire self-perspective. Sometimes irrecoverably. Having an identity is important.
<Snipped quote by Valiance>

Couldn't anything change with the right data?

Absolutely. But, all I’m getting at is that changing a perspective on some viewpoint a person holds dear to their very being can be more than just a change of opinion in terms of consequences.

Subjective and objective can get a little muddled for me, but I don't think I have to be right about it. Maybe they'll change my mind.

Mm. I don’t know if it’s a topic I’d want my mind changed on. I’d almost rather live in ignorance than be proven wrong on something that means the world to me.
<Snipped quote by Valiance>

That's also fine. I wouldn't mind seeing an opposite perspective on it.

Do you see the viewpoint as objective?
<Snipped quote by Valiance>

That's fine. We don't have to agree on everything.

It’s not that I don’t. It’s that I’m sure you’ll get disagreement when asking the kinds of folks I have in mind.
