"Thank you, Kamui." Oh thank the kami they had a plan, or as much as one as they were going to get. With Shinda providing rope and Kamui giving backup from the end of the line, Rei felt like it was his job to take the lead. He wasn't sure how he was suppose to break rocks like this, but he supposed that was just another kind of ability he should learn to master. Shockwaves to handle things that weren't people or animals. He wasn't going to be able to handle a whole as boulder, but he could figure out some of the smaller rocks. At the very least, maybe try to knock them off course or something….

Giving a heads up sounded like a better, more feasible option depending on the size. He stayed near the rope, making a point to do his best to find the best path to grip and climb. To his own surprise, he managed to fend off a few rocks from hitting himself or his teammates, and by the grace of his kami he wasn't knocked off balance badly enough to fall into his teammates. Things were good up until another large rock for Rei to yell for them to hear "Boulder going right!"

Please let rocks be it, he hoped.

Rei was far more comfortable when his teammates finally joined him on the cliff. It was a good idea from Shinda to try an arrow and rope. Rei was pretty sure he wasn't strong enough to ire and arrow and have it stick in rock, but Shinda was really good with bow and arrow.

Boobytraps? He tugged on the rope to test it and figured that it'd at least be safe to use as a guide for them all or something.

But back to the possible threats, would Shumatsu do that? The sudden trickling of falling pebbles and rocks, to the subsequent collective look up to what was coming by all three of them, was the obvious 'he would absolutely do that'. Rei almost squeaked in surprise and then scrambled to move out of the way as a boulder rolled down their way. He was definitely going to have to fix his sweater and clean everything. This whole trying to move out of the way as quickly as possible business was really going to do a number on his clothes and his hands. Was he even going to have hands by the end of this?

He managed to move out of the way and dodge off to the side, somehow still hanging on. Instinctively, he looked back to the others to see if they were okay and then back up the cliff face. "Okay, what if we take turns or something to fend off what's coming?" He said this and then immediately realized that he mayhap not be the best for this task, but dammit he was going to try. He moved back toward them, determined about this.

Rei had been paying attention as well as he was able. Their sensei was kinda boring, but he couldn't actually say that, he just helped where he was able and did what he was told. He knew Shinda from the few times they had lunch together that one time and Rei asking if Shinda if he and his brother shared the same room or if it was different rooms. He didn't remember what had started the conversation, but Rei had suddenly gotten curious. You only didn't share rooms if someone was married or over a certain age or something. Honestly, it'd been a revelation to hear that not everyone's family was large and that not everybody shared rooms all the time.

What was he thinking about, again? Right, so Rei had gotten inspiration of one of his more recent patterns from some leaves he saw and the style of someone's hair that caught in the sunlight. It wasn't Shinda's but it was dark like his. He was startled out of his mental wandering when the door slammed open and Shinda's brother said it was time for him to go. Rei looked over to his as-close-to-a-friend-as-he'd-had-since-he-started-here, a little worried for him, and then remembered that they had been assigned on the same team. Right! Sensei had been reading off all of the other teams and writing them on the board and Rei mentally checked out somewhere in there after getting who he was on a team with. The abrupt leaving had him looking at Shinda, then glancing back to the board to see what the other name was while he scrambled to get his little bag packed and hurry after Shumatsu.

It was a long walk and if not for his slight fear of Shumatsu, he might have tried to 'strike up convo', as someone in class had put it once. Instead, it was Rei following along in awkward silence, half jogging every now and then because Shumatsu was very big and took big strides and for someone Rei hadn't seen want to do a lot, he walked awfully fast all the time, according to Rei. By the time they finally got to apparently what their destination was, Rei felt a little out of breath. He bent over, hands on knees for a moment and then straightened, leaning back and looking up at the cliff being pointed to.

It was huge! He had just enough time to look back up to Shumatsu in a 'really though??' before the adult leaped to the top of this thing like it'd been a tree. Sundown?? It was midday already! He huffed and pouted, looking this stupid cliff up and down. This was going to mess up his clothes, wasn't it. He'd just finished cleaning this jacket from the last fight he had. And now it was going to be dirty and probably get damaged! He contemplated taking it off to climb, but the soft fabric was going to be the only thing between his pasty arms and some sharp rocks.

Another deep breath. "Okay, we can do this, you guys." A little fist pump. The uncertainty in his soft voice was apparent. He couldn't fail this though. They had to make it. It was a group effort. His team was his new group. All activities should be done in groups. Doing things alone was frowned upon unless it met one of the exception rules. This did not meet exception rule requirements. He made his way to the base of the cliff, looked back at the other two, giving an awkward low wave with his hand, and started to climb. There was probably and easier way to do this, he mused as soon as his palm touched a sharp rock and he pulled back to find a different grabbing point. He was a shinobi! He could not bring shame to his family. He had to do his very best. Even if he fell, he had to sacrifice for the group. He needed to make sure that his teammate made it. That was the rule. The group always comes before the self.

The Clan of Chinmoku (Silence). A very wealthy clan of mostly of shinshoku priests. The main function of the shinshoku is to officiate at all shrine ceremonies on behalf of and at the request of worshippers. They are not expected to lecture, preach, or act as spiritual leader to their parishioners; rather, their main role is to ensure the continuance of a satisfactory relationship between the kami (god or sacred power) and the worshipper through offerings, evocation of the kami, and mediation of the deity’s blessing to the parishioners.

The entity worshipped is a Chakra no Ban'nin (Keeper of the Chakra). The kami is seen as a neutral entity that gives attention to all who worship them, regardless of any earthly affiliation of village or personal creed. It is an amoral entity who gifts to beings and collects from beings, the chakra the kami provides. The Clan of Maisō (Burial) handles the physical body while the Clan of Chinmoku handles the spiritual; they've been working together for centuries.

The Chinmoku clan is a family that has the ability of sound resonance with chakra. Their belief of worship is that all chakra has a song specific to the person or thing it originates from and that no being has the same song. Their ceremonies and rites often include the use of special bells or hymns to match the song of the person who has passed, first harmonizing, then playing the antithesis of it to cancel out the chakra's song, silencing the entity eternally. This form of ceremony ensures that the person and their chakra can never be utilized, raised, or revived through any form of jutsu, science, or otherwise.

Their ability to identify and control vibrations and frequencies to use the Song of someone's Chakra, allows those with mastery of sound abilities a form of copy jutsu called Song Mask, and other very high-level abilities like Tomb of Silence, Songbird Cry, Sea Siren, Whale Song, Harassing Crowd, Subwoofer Quake, Bass Canon Barrage, Thunderous Gong, and Death Frequency.

The whole of his life has been the focus of death of others, music, and personal fashion choices. Rei grew up in a large estate of generational priests. For a good chunk of his young life he stayed either at his house or the home of one of the other approved clans. Like his siblings before him, he was pulled into regular duties early and grew to enjoy them as a way to spend time with family. They ate together, read together, worked together, practiced together, sometimes played together.

At the tail end of the litter of children, by the time Rei was old enough to participate more, he had younger nieces and nephews he would show the ways he'd learned along with cousins who were around his same age. Everything was always done in a group. Despite the cult-ish atmosphere, he's enjoyed the freedom to make clothing and items he enjoys for himself and his family.

The biggest change came in the form of leaving the estate to participate in the 'public schooling' for ninjas. He may have had some special training at home pertaining to ritual activities and duties, but he still needed to be acclimated to others outside of the Chinmoku or Maisō clans. Being with other children was difficult, they didn't want to do everything in a group all the time and Rei found it odd, but figured out through some fights that sometimes you have to give people space. Privacy wasn't something he'd ever thought of while at home. There were special rooms if you really had to talk about something, but he felt that because everybody knew about it and could see others entering and leaving it, that it wasn't really private.

Sight Reading. Ability to 'sight read' the 'sheet music' of someone's chakra, whether the chakra is visible or not. Each person's chakra is different, none are ever the same, and each Song of Chakra from every person is different. The ability is normally used for death rites to find the residual chakra signature of someone who has passed in order to match the song for ceremony. It can also be used to identify people or objects affected by others through residual notes of a Chakra Song.

Rei can use it once a day.

✖ ‖ T a l e n t s
Perfect pitch, sensitive hearing, fashion icon that likes making his own clothes and jewelry in his free time. Has figured out how to mold small pieces of various materials into beads and small shapes. He has no idea how to use such a thing in a battle, but the patience, time, and concentration in custom jewelry work is certainly a feat. Can play multiple instruments, and can play-by-ear as well as sight reading sheet music. Can impersonate voices, including singing voices--though his range is currently limited in both.

✖ ‖ J u t s u
✖ ‖ Moment of Silence.
Can make a 5ft bubble of silence around himself, allowing him to move completely unheard. Pretty good for all the clink-clank of his jewelry.

✖ ‖ Song Sword.
A ninjutsu and genjutsu based technique that requires special chakra training and use of specially made weapons, in this case specifically the Song Sword. Utilizes the nature of sound in air and metal.

The sword can be held in different positions like an unseen chakra creation of an instrument and be tapped, strummed, or blown on to play, and with practice and chakra control, can be made to mimic the sound of almost any instrument. This is what is most often used for Philharmonic Symphony Rites, unless someone requests otherwise.

✖ ‖Song Sword, First Style: Wind Chime.
In a close combat fight, each time the sword is hit, the user can choose to allow it to gong, chime, or screech, and can vary the pitch and tone. Only the target who made contact with the blade to cause it to ring can hear and feel the effects. The harder a target hits the blade, the louder the sound becomes. The vibrations of the sound can be felt through the target's weapon through to their core and cause disruptions in chakra and concentration the more the target hears the sound. Temporary loss of hearing may also occur if the sound is loud enough and the target is close enough.

For obvious reasons, it often puts off people from hitting the weapon and forces them to try to make other attacks.

The duration and effect are diminished over distances, and thus is not effective for long range combat.

A user can utilize this ability in combination with Sight Reading and Philharmonic Symphony Rites to build a dissonant song with each hit if they have the focus to.

✖ ‖ Philharmonic Symphony Rites.
A jutsu style played with the Song Sword.

Rei can use it once a day. He's currently not practiced enough to be able to use it without sitting and remaining stationary.

- Harmonic Symphony. Creating a tune that harmonizes with someone's Chakra Song can help heal chakra related wounds.

- Dissonant Symphony. Creating a tune that is dissonant with someone's Chakra Song can cause targeted disorientation, sickness, fatigue, and trouble using a chakra ability that requires concentration.

- Antithesis Symphony. Creating a song that is the antithesis of someone's Chakra Song can prevent a living person from using their chakra as long as they are within earshot of the song and the song is continuously played. In the dead, such a song cancels out the person's remaining chakra, snuffing out all original remnant of them and allowing the person a peaceful eternal rest.

Trying to play the antithesis of someone's song is very difficult in battle. A dissonant song is far easier and doesn't need to be as precise. Kekkei abilities in living people are not counted as 'chakra' for this, and thus are not affected by the antithesis.

✖ ‖ W e a p o n s A n d T o o l s
- The Song Sword, a fancy hand-me-down tanto. As many powerful battles as generational tantos like this have gone through, they're far more difficult to make than they are to maintain and have become quite difficult to break. Because it is such a specially crafted blade to resonate and amplify sound, the family has enscripted on it a way to recall it to one of its assigned owners so that it may never be lost.
- Other hand-me-down wakizashi
- Some kunai
- Some shuriken
- Bells & chimes. He attaches them to his weapons and uses them as distractions while he fights. They shimmer, they make noise, they can have exploding tags on them, and he can use them for quick replacement.
- Sewing kit

✖ ‖ F i g h t i n g S t y l e
He's not cut out for long drawn-out fights and will still lose his physical stamina quickly after around 10 minutes, depends on how much he's having to do. He aims to have a target eliminated or otherwise incapacitated well before then. Otherwise, he'll hide to give himself a breather and distract his opponent before ambushing again. He strongly utilizes the movement and size of his clothing to avoid taking damage and can effectively fight with one or both swords at once. He's not a power hitter by any means. Most of his style relies on moving, dodging, and distracting to create opportunities for himself or others to make fatal or debilitating strikes.

Kenjutsu. Well-practiced for close combat with a wakizashi and tanto. He's not strong, but he's fast and precise, preferring to try for a fatal or critically debilitating hit as soon as possible.

Taijutsu. Good enough to dodge and block. Not really a hitter, but kami-knows he does his best. Bless having a weapon in order to get anything done right now.
