Leader Name: Flavius Crispinus, or "Crispinus the Moor"

Faction Name: Household of Crispinus

Map Province: Diocese Oriens

History/Bio:

Flavius Crispinus was born to a tribe of Berbers loyal to the Emperor. His family has latinized with his Grandfather, who served with distinction during the early part of Emperor Remus's Visigothic Wars. Moorish cavalry was highly respected by the Roman forces fighting the Visigoths, as the Moorish style of slinging javelins from horseback helped to counter the armored Visigothic knights.

Crispinus entered the Roman military and fought at the close of Emperor Marcellus's war with the Visigoths, and he worked his way up to be promoted the Duke of Mauritania. With this command, he built five Dromons to patrol the coast of Hispania. Though Hispania gave him the training that he would need later in life, it was the Battle of Aquae Dacicae in his own home province of Mauritania that got him noticed.

Hoping to weaken Roman control of the west in order to regain what they had lost during the wars, the Visigoths bribed several Moorish tribes in the interior of Africa to overrun the province to the sea. 15,000 Moors met Crispinus's 2000 in the desert south of the bath city of Aquae Dacicae. Though they were out numbered, the Roman forces had better discipline. Crispinus deployed light cavalry and held his armored Cataphracts in reserve, catching the enemy cavalry off guard and forcing them to fall back. This left the Moorish infantry - a disorganized mob more than a military - with both flanks completely exposed. The Cataphracts were able to break them and force them fleeing back into the desert, where the tribes dissipated and gave up their campaign.

Crispinus's victory got him noticed and he married Eudokia, the daughter of a wealthy Roman family from Carthage.

After the disastrous defeat that saw much of the government of the Diocese Oriens lost alongside the Imperial prince 'Arabicus', the Emperor appointed Crispinus to the position. His lack of political rivals in the Imperial court, combined with his knowledge of the desert, made him the choice pick. He has been appointed the emergency double title of Magister Miletum and Vicar and been charged with bringing the east to order in preparation for the Saracen assault.
Go for it. Might want to read up on early Rabbinic Judaism and its relationship with Jewish philisophy. There would also be the competing importance of Jewish scholarship in Iraq vs in the Roman Empire.
Oh, that is just fucked up.

I don’t even understand how someone builds up the energy to post shit like this

Like you fuckers could be learning a new language or helping the homeless but instead you choose to post unfunny memes that will only get a guffaw out of spastic teenagers and aging soccer moms.

It's indecision, I think. Like, you wake up and think "I am going to learn about the homeless and help a new language, this is what I am going to do." but then you struggle to commit to either of these things, because they take time and energy, so you stall out and post memes. After all, posting a meme only takes a minute, so you can stop doing that any time!

But then you post so many memes that the homeless are unlearned, the languages are unspoken, and you have no more time left to do anything.

Well that's just stupid.

Start smoking immediately. The only real acting method is method acting.

In this case, Menthol acting.
You can be a city, a lesser tribe in Arabia, a minor noble family in Persia with only modest estates, or a Roman Dux with limited command. Whatever you can think of that fits.
In Rome, the regions are military and civil offices. In Persia, they are Satraps. In the Islamic world, they are spheres of influence. These represent the most powerful names, but they don't represent complete control.

It might help to imagine that we are straddling the divide between Nation RP and Advanced character RP. You pick a faction and RP that faction within this world.
I drew the Lahkmids into Persia for the sake of simplicity, but technically they are a loose client state and not a proper part of the Empire. They wouldn't be Muslim... but they would certainly be a competitor.

Also, alternatively, if you find someone not on the map while you are researching and you can place them in this period, I would allow you to play them. If you find a sub-tribe amongst the Quryash that you would want to play, you can probably request Aaron for control and figure out where they would go. One of the nice things about going to the level below nation-state is that we can add things without fucking with national sovereignty.
One important thing to remember when talking about practices and norms is that they are not absolutes. I think it is safe to say that mass murder is not an accepted practice in modern society, but it happens. Rape in the military is not an accepted practice, but that also happens.

Something can be taboo, but that doesn't make it literally unheard of.
