Bio

I've been RPing for about 10 years on and off, and I secretly want to be a writer. I'm a casual/advance RPer with a distaste for character sheets and extensive templating. I just want to write well with others.

Creative collaboration brings me so much joy, so please don't hesitate to message me if you're interested in telling a story together!

Rookie went back to his lower bunk and sat down, making the bedsprings creak. Bouncing slightly on the mattress, he shook his head in bewilderment. Maybe he was prototyping his friend's virtual reality headset, but forgot about it. Maybe this was elaborate prank by his housemates as a twisted 3 year anniversary gift. Maybe he had awoken from the matrix—whatever it was, he obviously wasn’t here by consent.

His hands brushed over the bump on his neck and he shivered, a dull memory flickering at the outer ridges of his mind. He had fallen asleep in his room, like any other night, and that was all he could remember.

“This can’t be real,” Rooke muttered, watching the people around him change as if they had no care in the world, one of the girls even slipping out of her underwear. He lied back in his bed and stared at the sterile ceiling above of him, assessing his situation; he had no recollection of ever meeting the naked people he currently shared a room with, and was at the whim of unidentified persons.

So this is why my parents taught me about stranger danger, he thought as he sat up and pulled the bag from under his bed. Placing the duffle on his lap, he shuffled through its contents, resting the uniform on the bed before thumbing the slip of paper on the top. It read “driver” in a fiery orange atop a paragraph that outlined the description. As Rooke read the details, a lopsided smile slowly formed on his face. His heart pounded and his hands began to sweat, and after a minute of deliberation he stood up and started stripping.

“I’m glad we’re all getting to know each other better,” he said, his eyes raking over every body in the room. He unabashedly faced the other members as he changed, his bravado fueled by the absurdity of the situation. Taking all the time in the world, he changed into his new uniform and slipped into the pair of shoes beneath his bunk.

He glanced at the conversing pair of girls, and said, ”I’m more interested in why you all seem to be taking this so well. Is this not fucking weird?” Rookie motioned to the reflective glass, his old shirt still clenched in his fist, and laughed, ”The U.M.F? Seriously? I mean, I know I said yes, too, but I can't be the only thinking this is unreal.”
[@Whitestar] woopsie, will fix that later. Thanks!
His body ached—that wasn’t anything really different than how he usually felt in the mornings, especially after a long night of hunching over his computer screen, but he felt much groggier than usual. He reached out his arms and heard them pop and crack and laid them back down, only to have them thump against a metal pole.

Rooke opened his eyes and blinked a few times. It was hard to see, but he could make out the sheets of his bed and the color of his clothes. He shot up and his hands scrambled over his clothes, the bedsheets, and the sore parts on his body—this wasn’t home, and these weren’t his roommates. He sat silently, gaping as he took in his new surroundings.

He turned his head to the source of a sudden, bright light and watched as a woman behind the glass boldly proclaim that everyone in this room was meant to leave their lives behind and join a cultish sounding organization. Rooke almost burst out laughing at the absurdity at the situation, but the realization that he had no memory of how he got here made for pause. Fear trickled down his veins. He glanced around the room--metal walls, a bolted door, and intimidating figures behind the glass.

“What the fuck…” He muttered with his face in his hands, before throwing off the covers and pivoting to sit on the side of his bed, “No questions? Explanations? Just blind allegiance? For the betterment of humanity? This is like the cut and copy speech of any fascist dictator. Does anyone realize how insane this is?”

Rooke realized he was sweating profusely, but didn’t move under the oppressive heat that swirled in the room. He felt light headed, and dizzy, and wanted desperately to get to someplace with AC. Leaning back, he took some deep breathes and felt his head spin, before standing and approaching the people grouped at the front of the glass. After a moment’s hesitation, “Sure. I’ll play along.”

Just get me out of here.

Jae (Rooke) Kim

”My favorite part about startups is that no one gives a damn whether I come into work wearing PJs or an animal suit. My least favorite part about startups is the glorification of ownership. I don't believe in that shit.”

Rooke is tall and lithe, standing at 6’ 1’’, and doesn’t have a whole lot of mass to him. He likes to wear his hair up in a bun when he’s working. He often wears stylish and minimalistic clothing, influenced by his attempted (failed) stint as a model, and is unblemished except for a birthmark between the dimples of his lower back.

Personality
He’s intelligent, fiery, and passionate about whatever moves him. His particular interests lie in programming/hacking, getting into debates with others, and meeting other people (despite considering himself an introvert). Other hobbies include voracious reading, rock climbing, and Netflix. He enjoys the occasional party, but is relatively austere and against consumerism. Living for many years in San Francisco and rebounding from his restricted facade of a self in Korea, he’s become openly liberal, anarchistic, increasingly passionate about social justice and inequality.

He’s sarcastic and doesn’t take himself too seriously, but if you press too hard against his beliefs, he’ll press back with scathing defensiveness. The first impressions of him are that he is intelligent, cool, and slightly intimidating with regard to his straightforwardness. He’s not so great at dealing with emotions, and tends to get snappy/evasive when he’s angry or sad or confused. Once you get to know him, you also see the more arrogant, quick to judge side of him that is confident in his work and smarts. Due to the way he’s grown up, he has never had any best friends in Korea, but has been making progress with his emotional intelligence/relationships after arriving to the US.

History
Rooke was born the only child to a upper class family in Seoul, Korea, where, from day one, his parents pushed him to extremes in order for him to attain the best grades, manners, and behavior—to be the perfect son. It was a stifling childhood that consisted of hours of study and discipline. Needing to escape, he convinced them to let him study in the U.S, and he was sent to a private high school. He took his first computer programming class as a freshman and was hooked; he taught himself various languages in his free time, which he had plenty of, as the curriculum in the U.S seemed much more relaxed than what he was used to.

Rooke dropped out of before his second year at Stanford as a computer science major to move to San Francisco and pursue entrepreneurship with a couple of his cofounders. They had been accepted into the Thiel Fellowship, and with the provided grant, him and his friends were no longer dependent on their families. They worked diligently on a food sharing platform for a few years, with him as the lead programmer, living in a community house with other young hackers and innovators. He learned a lot about taking risks, compromise, and himself during this time of self actualization. When their company was bought out, he and his cofounders went their separate ways, and he turned towards small scale investment with a new partner.

His current investments are at a standstill, due to his unfocused business acumen in choosing and supporting startups. Despite his previous successes, he feels lost and ulitmately purposeless and blames this on the way his parents raised him—to judge success by what others expect and to rely on external validation.

Character Relations

Other:
Fun fact, he tried to make an occupation out of being an ulzzang (it means best face or good-looking. This is a real thing.) by self marketing while he lived in Korea, but that never really got anywhere. He’s also an eloquent potty mouth.
My driver!

alright! Still interested in the drivers spot! I won't be able to have a cs up for about a day, but def down for this. :)
oh woops, i meant to write 'driver' in the previous post. it's cool! i think i'll pass, then. thanks!
interested for runner spot! :) this looks cool

Rooke swiped his keycard on the black scanner and the expansive white door slid open, revealing a brightly lit lab. People in lab coats buzzed around the room, sharing their discoveries or hunching over their latest piece of work. It was anything but quiet—so different than the lifeless room he saw last night. He strode in, suitcase in one hand, and headed towards the end of the room, where a hallway would lead into his office.

He waved to some of his coworkers and was halfway through the room before a man, his coat slightly undone and a clean beard outlining his broad grin, pulled Rooke by the arm and near an unoccupied, metal table.

“Rooke! I saw the report you published yesterday. Our resident anarchist has done it again!” The man slapped Rooke on the back and continued, “I’m especially pleased that you left in that bit about systemic brainwashing. Good stuff. Also, you look like shit, brother."

Rooke snorted and cocked an eyebrow, “I could say the same about yourself, Archie,” He motioned vaguely at the man’s beard and smiled, “You’ve still got that monstrosity on your face. And I didn’t write anything about ’systemic brainwashing’—people are going to get the wrong idea if you say anything too loudly."

Archie rolled his eyes and replied, “Bullshit. You can call it whatever you like, 'institutional conformity', 'synergetic adaption', or whatever, but I know what you think of The Republic. There’s nothing to hide, Rooke. You’re amongst intellectuals. Friends.” He put his hand on Rooke’s shoulder gently and offered a lopsided grin.

“I know; I’m just not used to—” Rooke waved a hand at everyone in the room, working diligently and freely on their projects,—this."

“Well, you’re here now.” Archie grinned, “And if there’s anything that the STEMS department did right, it was creating the iLab. There’s a lot of freedom here not afforded anywhere else, although most of us went through a lot of shit to get here. Anyway, I just sent out the requests for some modules of synergy—we’ll go over the details later."

They waved each other goodbye, and Rooke resumed his brisk pace to the office. He entered and closed the door sharply and sunk into the chair behind his desk. It was a large room, he noticed, as he took the time to scan his surroundings. He had only been located from this office for a few months—his old workplace was larger, but less private and was farther from home. Here, he had more creative and intellectual license to pursue his projects, with less interference from The Republic, so long as he provided them with the occasional report. He had done enough for them to last a lifetime.
