It seems like he was reluctant to kill them. But that does seem a bit far. Anything else?

Very peculiar. Well, one method would be to augment the capacity of the mind of the host. I can attach a device no bigger than a peanut to the back of your head to allow both to fit in the same head with greater ease, if you like. That should help.
