I was talking with friends in school and somehow the topic of racism came up. Somewhere in the conversation I said something like "well its a lot in your childhood and upbringing, if you were around a lot of black people then you're probably less likely to be racist later on". One of the kids I was talking to just goes "yeah my dad was brought up like that" and then walks off. Uh, like what, around black people? Brought up like that? Really? Like c'mon man, he says this super low key racist shit all the time and doesn't even realize it.
You'll have to elaborate, i'm not sure i'm grasping your reasoning on why that's racist.

Sorry, I guess I should've provided some background. His family is super rich, white, etc. His dad grew up poor, very much unlike his current financial position. By saying "like that" he's implying that black people are by default, poor.

Well, I mean nothing he said sounds like it was inherently racist, but it could be lost within the absence of tonality and his character in your post, which I'm willing to trust you on as you know him more than I do. But, from a surface value, it sounds like he's saying "Yeah my dad was brought up around black people", which wouldn't be surprising if he was from a poor upbringing as minorities, for many many self-perpetual and external reasons, are being segregated negatively through the lens of socio-economics in regards to ethnicity.

Yeah, I don't know, it just bugged me. It doesn't really sound all that bad when typing it out or whatever, but just the frequency in which he makes these kinds of comments and knowing his character, it comes off very terribly in real life.

Sounds to me like you're being a little oversensitive if minor, probably unintentional, only arguably low-key racist comments come off as "really terribly".

I grew up "like that" and I can tell you that, while real racism is a problem, that is not it. It's using the english language. People use general terms such as "like that" all the time in order to avoid using a few sentences where a few words will suffice.
