They're typically native to areas where lots of nutrients are more efficiently gathered by insects. You don't typically find carnivorous plants in a desert, or plains, or even deciduous forests where leaves fall in autumn and resupply the soil -- you find them in bogs, rainforests, and other areas that can be tough for a small plant.

Right.

Essentially it's just sort of an alien ecosystem. Normally feeders come to the food and eat; some places, it's more efficient for the feeders to wait and the food comes to them. Deep ocean fish do it too; we sorta write it off because hey, they're fish, doesn't count, but it's the same principle in a similarly harsh environment.

Its a sexual selection thing.

Being a carnivore is much more manly and bad ass, so the plants with these manly tendencies had an easier time getting laid. One moment a dandelion is catching a fly to impress a lady plant, and after a few generations you have fly traps.
