Wesley Gray sucked the nicotine from the cigarette, pulling the smoke and mint into her lungs and flaming her innards with a need for more. Wes had a love-hate relationship with cigarettes – because, momentarily, just momentarily, she could feel her anxiety being burned away. Then, ironically like smoke, it slipped from her grasp and left her wanting more. Though many probably wouldn’t believe her, smoking was a habit she picked up recently – over the summer, in fact.

It wasn’t that important – her smoking. Everyone already thought she did it.

There’s no importance of knowing Wesley Gray smoked – but, rather, why she was smoking now.

Wes reluctantly threw her cigarette to the floor, stomping a scuffed shoe against it until half of it was ashes – she bought the shoes at a muggle mall and she was quite fond of them, but she felt no remorse or regret when the cigarette waste clung to the sole. The person ahead of her in the line she impatiently waited in ducked and she followed suit, pushing her way into the backseat of The Peregrine – Salem Witches’ Institute’s infamous, and rather dangerous, form of transportation. The car looked just as gross as it did the year before – thank god this was the second to last time she’d have to get into the ugly ass thing. Wes wasted no time clomping down the stairs of The Peregrine Hotel, she didn’t bother to stop by her assigned room – why bother, the Peregrine would be arriving in Maine in only a couple of hours.

Students milled around the area at the bottom of the hotel like usual – and, like most last days aboard King Tutt, it was buzzing with activity. Wes shouldered her bag and smiled awkwardly at someone she vaguely knew – blonde hair, green eyes, short stature – as she stumbled towards the couches. A brunet boy bumped into her shoulder, excitedly shouting “Brrrrt!” towards his friends in way of greeting. The seventh-year girl scowled at the touch, but chose not to fetch him by the back of his ugly ass shirt in favor of flopping down on the couch.

Despite it being 3:00 PM, the couches were nearly clear – the gambling session has started. And that’s why Wes was there, really, was for the gambling. Gambling wasn’t really a big part of the unofficially slotted time for such activities – it was mostly a time that the older students gathered together to talk in near vicinity of each other, even if they weren’t talking to each other, and then there was the occasional bet thrown over everybody’s heads. Most people came, even if they weren’t troublemakers or gamblers – Wes doesn’t remember when it became a thing that happened, but it did, and she waited impatiently for the small crowd that’d show.

Gatsby's day had not started off well. He'd been awoken by his mother, who proceeded to inform him that he was late, and then shrieked at him about not having packed. Gatsby, shirtless, groggy, and somewhat confused, stood up and ransacked his room to find his wand. Once he did finally locate the instrument, he flicked it and his clothes began folding themselves and floating into his suitcase. He grinned. Magic was wonderful.

While his suitcase packed itself, Gatsby rushed to get ready, combing his hair and slipping into a flannel and joggers. He slipped on his Converse and grabbed his now full suitcase, said goodbye to his mother, and then sprinted across the street to the bus stop, waiting to bring him home. Leaning against the wall, he found himself at a similar yet different bus stop, awaiting the arrival of the Peregrine. As he waited he pulled out a book, Fahrenheit 451, and began to read, picking up from where he'd left off in the middle.

So enraptured was he with the novel, that the Peregrine's arrival went unnoticed. He was finally pulled back to reality by the honking of the horn, and he then clambered into the car, taking his room number from Pluto and giving her and Mercury a friendly greeting. The old crones resumed their bickering just as he was climbing down the staircase. He first placed his suitcase in his room, and then made his way down to the common room area of the Peregrine, his nose buried in his book, only ever looking up to greet some of his friends. He finally found a spot to sit in the common room, surrounded by the noise of students, thrilled for a new year of school and adventure. Gatsby on the other hand, simply wanted to savor everything. It had just occurred to him that this would be one of his last few trips on the Peregrine. It filled him with a sense of longing and melancholy, that was only beat back by the words of Ray Bradbury and the sound of fourth years, arguing over a game of chess.

The three hour car ride was tedious, and it took every ounce of strength in Ebony's body to refrain from jumping out of the window. Although it was mid-August, Tanya Barnes, much to her daughter's dismay, very much enjoyed riding with all of the car windows rolled down. The heater was on full blast, despite the warm weather, and Gospel music blared from the radio speakers. Ebony had decided against changing the radio station, knowing that it'd only earn her an earful. Prior to meeting Ebony's dad, Tanya rarely attended church, let alone listened to Gospel music. Ebony's dad, on the other hand, was an avid church-goer, and eventually got her into the habit. Ever since his death, however, that seemed to be the only genre of music that she'd listen to. "It makes me feel closer to him, in a way," her mother once said to her, "It's like I can feel his presence."

Ebony sat in the passenger seat, flushed and sweaty, with her bare feet dangling out of the window. She'd stripped down to a tank top and shorts, the heat growing unbearable. She stared silently at the cell phone that was in her hands, the navigation app illuminating the screen. Every year her mother drove her from Brooklyn to Albany so that she could catch the Peregrine, yet each year, for some odd reason, her mom insisted on using the GPS. "You do know that I could've just taken the train, right?" Ebony yelled over the music as the car took another turn. "I woulda' got here a lot quicker."

Whether her mother heard her or not, Tanya chose not to answer, turning the music down instead. It was then that Ebony noticed that they'd finally arrived at their destination. Quickly pulling her shoes and clothes back on, she turned her cell phone off and stuffed it into the glove compartment.

As soon as the car came to a halt, Ebony pushed open the door and jumped out. She grabbed her things from the trunk of the car and bolted to the bus stop, not bothering to give her mother a hug or kiss goodbye. After all, she had just spent three whole hours in a car with the woman. She did, however, give her a smile and wave before leaning against the brick wall. In just a matter of seconds, she found herself where she needed to be, and patiently awaited the arrival of the Peregrine. As she waited, she pulled out her makeup bag so that she could make a few "touch ups" before seeing her friends again. The old Peugeot arrived just as she was stuffing the mirror back into her bag. After muttering a quick "hello" to Pluto and Mercury, Ebony carefully made her way down the stairs of the Peregrine Hotel. As did many others, she stopped by her assigned room to put her things away, before making her way to the hangout area.

Upon entering, Ebony noticed a great deal of familiar faces. There was also a large number of unfamiliar people, each of them with a mix of nervousness, anxiety, and excitement on their faces. One of the familiar faces she spotted belonged to Wesley Gray, a seventh year girl that she'd recognized from Astronomy club. Though having a few things in common, Ebony would not consider them to be very close. Another familiar face she saw belonged to Gatsby Fitzgerald, a beater for the Warren quidditch team. His nose was buried deep in a book, unsurprisingly, as he sat.

Scanning the room once more, Ebony sighed once she realized that her group of friends had yet to arrive. After making a split second decision, she made her way to the couch and took a seat, leaving a cushion in-between she and Wesley. She sat in silence for a few minutes, unsure of how to start the conversation, before clearing her throat. "Hey, Wes. You have a nice break?"

Dorado woke up to find himself in a strange room. Getting up, he groggily looked around the room until he recognized it as one of the rooms onboard the Peregrine. That was right, he'd laid down for a short nap earlier that afternoon. He wasn't really the type to nap, and it wasn't often that it was even an option. He always had something going on at Salem, and he spent his summers similarly occupied. In fact, he'd say all but two of the naps he'd taken in the past six years had been aboard this very vehicle. The rides to and from Salem were easily the most uneventful days of any year.

He glanced at the clock to find it was already three in the afternoon. That nap had gone on much longer than expected. Still, by this point everyone had probably been picked up. It was time to go down and see what everyone was up to. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, and pulling on a short sleeve button up walked out of his room to head downstairs.

On his way down, Dor tried to his best to avoid looking out any windows. He hated being reminded that he was technically inside a Muggle automobile. Getting in always made him a little nervous, but he got over it once inside. He just didn't like seeing the road. He found himself humming, and didn't notice until he walked into the hangout area that it was the song that had been playing on Muggle radio all summer.

Walking in, his eyes scanned the room. It didn't seem many of his friends were in here yet. Mostly a bunch of younger students. He walked to the couches usually reserved for the older students. He noticed Gatsby, who seemed to be abosrbed in his book. The guy was all right. Dor would have said something, but he personally didn't enjoy being bothered while reading so he just avoided him. Wes was also nearby. Dor looked for a different area to sit. He was not exactly looking to start the year off having to deal with her. But then again, his mind changed when he caught sight of Ebony. With a grin, he walked over to the pair of girls and plopped down on a couch across from them.

"Well hey there, Ebony, Wes. Had a good summer, I hope? Mine was... somethin' else." He made a show of staring off as if remembering it wistfully, then glanced back at the girls with a chuckle.
