Yeah that sounds like what my 4 kitties would do. They always want attention when I am asleep but not when I am awake. I will never understand them.

Mine try to get attention whenever I'm busy or sleeping. But whenever I'm not asleep or busy, they wanna be alone.

Cats are weird like that, but I love them just the same.
