Anyone else like to read?

I've been reading the Slab, a Gears of War novel (very good too. Karen Travis it a marvel with stories). I also like a few others like game of thrones or Contact harvest. I am also reading numerous other novels bits at a time but was simply wondering what you all read? I have to admit though I am not a massive potter fan anymore nor a twilight one at that. I wont say they have their pros and cons like any story but I just prefer fantasy that feels darker hence my love of the Gears series.

So what do you all like to read?

Chronicles of Elantra, a relatively unknown fantasy series, it seems, but very very in depth, emotional, and just flat amazing! Author is Christine Hvam, you should look into it!

When I'm not on the computer, drawing, or doing homework, I'm reading. I just finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman, which had one of the weirdest sex scenes I've ever read right at the end of the first chapter. Still, it was a good book. I have the Name of the Wind lined up to read next... Maybe. I'm mostly into fantasy and sci-fi stuff.

I also read graphic novels and comics a lot, mostly Witch Doctor and Mouse Guard. Also recently (meaning January) finished King City, which was... I liked it, but I can't really say it was that good.

Edit: oh, and the Necronomicon. I'm reading the Necronomicon.

I also really enjoy Karen Traviss' Gears novels, as well as her Halo ones. I've also got the first three Mass Effect novels, which aren't too bad.

I read a bit of everything, from science fiction and fantasy to thrillers, adventures, geopolitical Tom Clancy-esque stuff, historical non-fiction, humour fiction, and so on. Generally, if I'm lent a book or recommended one, I'll check it out. Right now, I'm working on two non-fiction books, The Discovery of Middle Earth: Mapping the Lost World of the Celts by Graham Robb, and The Great Sieges By Martin Windrow. After that, I have Bulfinch's Mythology, The Complete Works of HP Lovecraft, Homer's Odyssey, The Savage War by Murray Brewster, The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy, and a few other odds and ends on my bookshelf I haven't gotten around to yet.

To indulge my nerdy side I bought the Jedi Path and Book of the Sith the other day too. They aren't bad if you either want to pretend that world is real or are in need of some serious canon sources for the two factions.

If you like books where the protagonist takes a "fuck yeah" attitude towards rape, then sure, they're great. The first one was passable, with the protagonist practically wading through blood towards the end, but I couldn't get through the second in the series which was close to twice the length of the first.

I just finished the Slab today. I love how it links straight into the first game and answers so many questions. But that officer Settile...I don't know if I like her or hate her for what she does.

That's basically a small list of what I've read so far. I'm really huge into classic and ancient literature, but I do love a good fiction every once in a while. I was actually...iffy though when it came to Mortal Instruments, but it was an enjoyable read and an interesting take on Nephilim.

Rusalka I would recommend trying out the Warhammer Von Carstein Trilogy. It's the story about the vampires of that fantasy world and, from what I've read so far, is pretty dam good. I still need to finish it though...

I read mostly fantasy things, typically series of an epic scope like A Song of Ice and Fire, The Wheel of Time, and The Malazan Book of the Fallen. Doesn't need to be epic fantasy though, I'll read pretty much anything of the genre that catches my eye. Every once in a while I'll make a foray into other areas: if it's just because I'm feeling like reading something other than fantasy, it'll probably be something in the supernatural or horror realm (most likely a Stephen King book, maybe a Dean Koontz one if I feel like taking the chance of garbage or gold that his books seem to present, never a middle ground with that guy and it goes the way of garbage more often than gold), or maybe just a thriller type thing set in modern times (sometimes action-adventure stuff like James Rollins writes, sometimes legal thrillers courtesy of John Grisham); otherwise it was probably a book someone recommended highly to me, because I don't tend to look for non-fantasy books to read unless it's by an author I already know I like. There's certainly tons of good stuff out there that I'd probably like, but screw it, I've got a huge list of fantasy things I still want to read (over 200 items on the list, most of those items being series consisting of 3+ books) so I'll just stick to that unless someone brings my attention to something else by throwing a recommendation and/or the book itself at my face.

Hah, I just started reading American Gods a couple days ago. I know exactly the scene you're talking about. I hadn't been aware of just how weird the book was going to be, so that was a fun way to come to the realization that it's going to get super weird. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm only about 150 pages into it.

I like your taste Jorick though I need to return to the ice and fire series. I'm still only on the second book! I would recommend you looking at the Painted man by Peter Brett if you like fantasy though. I'm on early days with it but so far it is very interesting. All about humans fighting demons, well not fighting more hiding and hoping to survive. I still need to read past that bit where it gets truly interesting but I like it so far.
