The Tennessee Valley Campaign of 1862

As the winter melted away and spring arrived on the North American continent, the fighting once again resumed. In the east, the area expected to receive the heaviest fighting, the front lines remained static. The Union's Army of the Potomac now lead by Gen. McClellan and numbering 100 000, remained motionless, protecting Washington from the attack that never came. McClellan's southern counterpart, Gen. Lee, also refused to move, instead reinforcing his defences and waiting for the enemy to come to him, as it had at the Battle of Bull Run the previous year. And the Union did attack - just not where Lee expected.

Confederate defenses in Virginia

The Army of the West, a sizeable force of 50 000 Union soldiers led by Maj. Gen. Henry Halleck with Grant as his subordinate, moved south into Confederate territory and down the Tennessee Valley, laying waste to any farms, fields, and infrastructure that he came across. While there was some opposition, many surprised Confederate citizens let him pass through, burning a trail behind him. When the Confederate Army of Tennessee heard of this move, it was ordered to march to the defence of Nashville. It came as a shock, then, to its commander Albert Johnson that Halleck was much further west, moving towards Memphis. Fortunately, the new railroad system the CSA was building had linked these areas early in its construction. The Army of Tennessee used the railroad to move west in defence of Memphis. They were very nearly too late.

Still exhausted from the journey, only 25 000 men arrived in time for to defend Memphis. The Army of the West, on the other hand, was on high spirits. They were well rested, well supplied now that the blockade of the Union had ended, and outnumbered their enemy two to one. In the early hours of the morning, Halleck ordered the Army of the West to attack, taking the Confederates by surprise. Johnson attempted to keep his formation and hold his army together, but it came to no avail. The Confederate lines broke and fell into disarray as the men fled south. Halleck, seeing the advantage, pressed his men forward to try and surround the Confederates, knowing that if the Army of Tennessee was destroyed, the way would be clear into the heart of the Confederacy. He was not to be so lucky. As the Army of the West entered Memphis, it met a battalion of Confederate soldiers. The battalion, numbering only 1000 men, many of them Native American, held out valiantly against the Union forces, and were slaughtered to a man. This 'Stand of the Thousand', forever immortalized in the South, gave Johnson enough time to regroup his army in Mississipi and escape destruction. But the Union campaign was not yet done.
(-1000 regulars, -2000 conscripts to the USA, -1000 regulars, -3000 conscripts to the CSA)

Moving east, burning the land as they went, Grant and 25 000 men marched towards the city of Chattanooga. An impressive scouting system by the Confederates meant that Johnson was aware of this movement, and as his men were still filtering in from Nashville, he turned them around and moved parallel south of Grant, hoping to arrive before the Union did. He was supported when Confederate General Bragg arrived at Chattanooga, bringing 10 000 men with him. These men were well trained, and many of them had been in battle before at Bull Run and the Third Seminole War. Altogether, 20 000 men faced Grant near the town of Huntsville. The Battle of Huntsville lasted a long day, and with fewer casualties than the previous battle. However, as night fell, Johnson realised the precarious position his army was in, stretched out across Tennessee, and ordered a general retreat. As he regrouped to defend the strategic city of Atlanta, Grant entered Chattanooga, and moved to destroy as many rail lines as he could find. Chattanooga was a strategic railway hub for the Confederacy, and without it, the connection between east and west was severely hampered, but not destroyed, as newer lines ran further south, through Mississippi and Alabama.
(-1000 conscripts to the USA, -300 regulars, -600 conscripts to the CSA, -1 infrastructure level to the CSA)

The situation of 1862 now looked bleak for the Confederacy. It's allies in Europe had now turned their backs, large parts of their territory had been occupied, and they had lost two battles. The CSA needed a victory if they were to retain morale, and as 20 000 Union soldiers of the Army of the Mississippi, under the command of Philip Sheridan, moved south towards Vicksburg, they were determined not to let this opportunity slip through their fingers. General Bragg, leaving Johnson to defend Atlanta, moved west to take command of the Confederate forces in the area. He was too late to rescue the city of Little Rock, but as Sheridan reached the Mississippi, Bragg was waiting. He had mustered together around 18 000 men, and as the Union forces attempted to cross the river, he attacked. The battle raged fiercly. The day was almost won when Sheridan's second-in-command William T. Sherman launched a counterattack that very nearly broke through Confederate lines, but Bragg pressed his advantage and the Army of the Mississippi was forced to retreat back to Little Rock.
(-1000 regulars, -1500 conscripts to the USA, -700 regulars, - 1000 conscripts to the CSA)

Higher numbers were not enough to win the battle for the Army of the Mississippi

Although it had been a grim few months for the Confederacy, the brave actions of a few had saved the Army of Tennessee from total destruction, and swift thinking by General Bragg had prevented the Confederacy from being cut in two. The Confederacy would live to fight another day.

Maj. General McClellan

My dear sir,

These past few months have seen hard fighting in the West, and much ground has been gained through Tennessee. There have been sacrifices and losses, but we continue to move forward towards South Carolina and Charleston. Yet so far your army, which is the largest gathering of numbers we have, has remained stationary. The enemy gathers strength and builds defenses with each passing day, negating your advantage more and more. I read your dispatches to the Secretary of War, complaining of fatigued horses. Will you pardon me for asking what the horses of your army have done since the Battle of Bull Run that fatigue anything? Like my last wire, I cannot state how imperative it is that you take the initiative and meet the enemy in the field of battle at once. DO NOT DELAY IN THIS TASK.

Yours very truly,
Abraham Lincoln

I cant tell you how disgusted I am becoming with these wretched politicians.
-- George B. McClellan in a letter to his wife

Maj. General Henry Halleck

General,

With your success in Tennessee, the President and I have requested your presence in Washington to discuss the future strategy of the war. General Grant will take command of your armies and assume command of all Western operations temporarily. General Sherman will assume command of Grant's army in Chattanooga.

Sincerely,
Edwin M. Stanton
Secretary of War

Brig. General US Grant

My dear Grant,

With McClellan's foot dragging in Virginia, it seems that the President may want a change of commander. McClellan is too afraid of Bobby Lee to even attempt to fight him. If I am chosen, they will find no such delaying on my part. I am to depart for Washington within the next two days to conference with the President and Secretary of War. You are hereby recalled to Memphis to assume command of all Western forces. The assignment comes with a brevet rank to Major General. You are without a doubt the best officer I have in the West, and I have no doubt in your abilities to continue the attack on the rebels. If I do find myself in the chair of commander-in-chief, rest assured you will be

You faithful and humble servant,
Maj. General Henry Halleck

The Lei Áurea (Golden Law): One Year Later

It has been a year since the Lei Áurea has been signed and ratified by the Asamblea General (General Assembly), freeing 1.6 million African Americans. But things were hard for them as they try to get a job, or a house, or either food as the (Senado) Senate forgot to address them economic, political, and social status. Leaving millions of African Americans to become poor and jobless as some business still refuse to hire them; but, it's only a handful of businesses. Juliana Rocha, a mother of three children and a widow, has been looking for a job for a year and still lives in the government houses. "We are thankful that we are free, but I haven't had a job in a year; because, of my social status have-not been made and I get rejected as soon as I walk in any place." said Rocha as she wants the government to fix the issues before it's too late...

Is the Emperor planning to expand into the territory of Britain?

Since the death of Queen Victoria in England, many of the Queen's colonies has either has independence or have gone rogue, so has the colonies in South America (above Brazil and near the France colony), due to not having a stable government to take control. Rumors are that the Emperor plans to send the army to take control of it, but they haven't been confirmed or not...

Império do Brasil (Empire of Brazil)
Independência ou Morte!

Brazilians, today marks an important day in history as we are on the issues about African Americans getting economic, political, and social status. We’re hoping that we get done with addressing those things by the end of the year.

As for Britain, I’m sorry about the lost of Victoria and I hope that she is with God. Since you lost your colony in South America, we are asking you if we can take it and care for it. I have sent the army to the border to make such that the colony is captured and secured; but if you decline our request, we‘ll pull our army out. Mr. Edward, I hope that you take care of the country’s issues before it spills into another civil war.

The Republic of Great Britain and Ireland thank the Emperor of Brazil for his concern. However, we wish to let him know that he has been misinformed. Though there is a rebellion occurring in the home islands, the colonies of the Republic are still safely under the administration of the British Republic. We humbly ask that you remove your troops from the area and ask that the Emperor of Brazil, one whom our previous administration recognized as a beacon of peace continue in that philosophy. Once more we thank you for your concern, but please remove your troops from the area.

To the Union, we wish to let you know that the current administration of the Republic withdraws our Nations recognition of the Confederacy as a sovereign State. We will sign the peace treaty between our two nations as soon as it has sent. The Republic of Great Britain supports the Union in their attempt to put down the Rebellion. God speed, Mr. Lincoln.

We are not impressed with the Empire of Brazil’s recent rhetoric on the possibility of seizing British colonies in South America. The Republic of Great Britain is currently going through a difficult period and we must all stand firm by it to ensure that order is regained and Britain continues its vital role on the international level.

It is most despicable to strike an enemy when he is down. However, it is an abominable, ignominious and most wretched thing to strike a friend when he needs you most, to drive the subtle, treacherous knife into them while their back is turned.

We truly hope that this recent Brazilian rhetoric is nothing but words and that they will not follow up with military action. We have…great respect…for Brazil as a nation of peace and hope in an American continent torn apart by war and destruction, and it would be most dispiriting to see this…great upholder of peace turn away from its principles and allow hypocrisy, greed and war to taint it’s…as of yet untarnished…reputation.

Treaty of Peace

A state of war between United States and the Republic of Great Britain, the French Empire, and the Kingdom of Greece has now ended. The three previously mentioned nations are all at peace with the United States, and all four nations will cease any and all hostile actions against each other.

Treaty of Battambang

Recent times have brought forth uncertainty and instability throughout the world. Rebellions are rampant. Civic unrest is at an all time high, and the tides of war appear to be approaching closer and closer. It is with these concerns that the Kingdoms of Siam and Cambodia have decided to join together in an attempt to unify the region and bring stability. The product of this attempt is this treaty with the terms that follow:

1. The state of Cambodia will become officially a province of the Rattanakosin Kingdom.

2. In exchange, Combodia will be granted self-governing rights as a semi-autonomous state. Self-governing in this case is defined as the ability to administer and deal with internal affairs of the region and only internal affairs.

3. In addition, King Norodom will retain his title and powers as the leader of the new semi-autonomous province of Cambodia.

4. In a sign of new found friendship will marry Princess Chandornmondon, the eldest daughter of King Rama IV, in a display that will solidify the union.

May peace and fortune follow our new found friendship.

The peace treaty has been signed with an act of forgiveness to our Nation is the epitome of Christ-like character. We recognize that voices in the Union called for harsh retribution against the Republic of Great Britain and Ireland. Retribution that would have been justly served. We thank the Union for extending the hand of forgiveness. We thank the Nation of France for signing peace as well. Your two Nations have shown Christian Character, when they could have gained a great deal by pursuing war. We thank you for this mercy.

However the Republic of Great Britain and Ireland must be a land of no less integrity and character. As such, we wish to make war reparations to France and the Union even though none have been asked for. We desire to show that the British Republic truly has repented and will face consequences for our crimes. We offer France and the Union this as a way to show our forgiveness:

-To France, we will begin the process of transferring the province of Quebec to their Nation. In addition, we offer them one ironclad for their expenses.

-To the Union, we offer to pay 2,000 British Pounds to their Nation for the income that was lost due to our blockade. Furthermore, we offer them as well, one Ironclad for their defense.

The Republic of Great Britain wishes for a return to a peaceful and possibly friendly relationship with the United States of America. We hope that our devotion to the Nation of France is remembered and that we will serve alongside the French Empire as fellow members in the FFGB. We thank your Nations once again for peace.

The United States are flattered by Great Britain's kind words and even kinder offers. Unfortunately we cannot accept the 2,000 pounds, or accept so a precious gift as a ship that would better serve the Republic's defense needs both in home waters and across the world. If you seek to pay the United States back, ample reward will be the resumption of the fruitful transatlantic trade that benefits both nations equally well.

Empire Français (French Empire)
Liberté, egalité, fraternité

France is joyful to once again own the land of Quebec, the French speaking Canadians are likely to be more than happy, returning to their French heritage.
I hope that the FFGB will soon be, once again , in full swing after internal affairs are dealt with quickly within the UK.

To the Americans, I am glad the French Minié ball is serving you well. Offering better accuracy and lethality in the line of duty. My suggestion would be to use it wisely however.
A new era of war is upon us gentleman and old tactics will only lead to more deaths. I advise you to rethink strategies over the coming months.
May the war be quick and over with soon.

To Brazil I would much rather you not attack my good friend Great Britain's land and you should know that the FFGB would respond harshly to any act of military force brought onto it.

We are being watched by other nations because of our Emperor's peaceful ways! When we move to the military to the border of a colony, which we thought to be a rouge colony, the rest of Europe responces with military force. I got a letter from France and it says, I quote, "To Brazil, I would much rather you not attack my good friend Great Britain's land and you should know that the FFGB would respond harshly to any act of military force brought onto it.". We are being treated like we are the baby and the European powers babysit us and keep a close eye on us, and ever since the European powers let the Americans at their own, they have been keeping extra eyes at us! I think we should retake the southern territory, that were lost to the rebels and declared indepence.

Our Emperor is weak and useless, he is like a Pope or a Father at a church, all peace loving and caring, but doesn't think of the good things to come out of war. I say that we keep our army at the border to show our power so that the European nations don't attack our home! They will attack us someday like they did in the United States! We're next!

The United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway

The United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway are proud to announce a new trade agreement between our nation and that of the Empire of Brazil. As the representative of the UKSN in Brazil, I would ask the other nations to take a deep breath and reexamine the situation. Since the unexpected change of government in the formerly known United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, misinformation has been flying around in such large quantity that a flock of seagulls swarming a sea of fish would be dwarfed. The key to this misunderstanding is the status of the British colony in Guyana. While the Brazilians thought that the colony had thrown off the yokes of British rule and thinking it was trying to help the new republic in Britain, in reality, the colony was still in British hands, causing the nations of Europe to think Brazil was attempting to kick a man while he was already down. We ask everyone to keep a level head so that no bloodshed will come of it.

The Republic of Great Britain thanks the United States of America for their continued generosity. Our Merchants will continue their trade upon your shores and the ports of the British Republic are once more opened to your Great Nation. We thank the USA for their kindness and understanding compassion. To the French Empire we welcome a return to our friendly relations.

Regarding the issue of Guyana and Brazil, we ask that all Nations remain calm. As the United Kingdom of Sweden and Norway stated, it was simple miscommunication. While we thank the Nations of Europe for quickly leaping to our aid, we firmly believe that Brazil only had the best of intentions. While we still reiterate our request that Brazil removes their troops from the area, we thank Brazil once more for their concern. It is our desire that peace should reign in this region.

We are going to move troops away from Guyana as it was stated for the British to still be their rule. We thank Sweden for their help to clam rest of Europe of going to war with us. This trade agreement could expand our friendship even more and I hope that our nations live in peace for years to come. We understand that we are the safe haven during the American Civil War and we would like to keep that until peace talks are held in Brazil and the war ends.

PROCLAMATION 93

I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America, and Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy thereof, do hereby proclaim and declare that hereafter, as heretofore, the war will be prosecuted for the object of practically restoring the constitutional relation between the United States, and each of the States, and the people thereof, in which States that relation is, or may be, suspended or disturbed.

That it is my purpose, upon the next meeting of Congress to again recommend the adoption of a practical measure tendering pecuniary aid to the free acceptance or rejection of all slave States, so called, the people whereof may not then be in rebellion against the United States and which States may then have voluntarily adopted, or thereafter may voluntarily adopt, immediate or gradual abolishment of slavery within their respective limits; and that the effort to colonize persons of African descent, with their consent, upon this continent, or elsewhere, with the previously obtained consent of the Governments existing there, will be continued.

That on the first day of January in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three (1863), all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.

And I do hereby enjoin upon and order all persons engaged in the military and naval service of the United States to observe, obey, and enforce, within their respective spheres of service, the act, and sections above recited.

Confederate States of America

Excerpts from an Address to Congress

Proclamation Ninety-Three. That, gentlemen, is Abraham Lincoln showing his true colors. He has shown the world that he is a tyrant. He claims he wants to uphold the the Constitution our forefathers fought for, but he violates it with this proclamation. This man who was made President of the United States might very well be called Tyrant of the United States!

I have nothing to give but blood, toil, sweat, and tears, gentlemen. It is what I ask you to offer; it is what I ask every man in this nation to offer.
Blood. Spilled in the Stand of the Thousand and elsewhere.
Toil. The struggles are soldiers face day in and day out fighting these tyrants.
Sweat. The hard work that fuels this nation and keeps it going forward.
Tears... Tears. Have you shed them, gentlemen? I know I have. I shed them now. It is truly a dark hour for liberty. The Union is in our land. And they seem to be winning. We have been backed into a corner, gentlemen, and we must come out swinging.

I, personally, have full confidence that if every one of us... Every person here and in the fields of war and at home, if we all do what we must and what is necessary, if nothing is neglected and the best of arrangements are made, as I believe I have made, then we shall overcome. We shall ride out this war and outlive this monstrosity of tyranny to our north. If we must weather this storm for years or if we must stand alone, then we shall do that with God at our back. The Thousand I've spoken of before were not even Christian men - many of them were American Indians - and yet even they had God at their back! Such is the strength of our cause! These States, convened together in a Confederacy and assembled in a national government in Charleston, South Carolina, are linked together by blood. By toil. By sweat. By tears. We will defend to the death our way of life or we shall die trying!
Even though broad swaths of our land have fallen and may fall into the grip of the Union and be placed under its tyrannical rule, we shall not give up and we shall not give in. We shall fight in Virginia and Tennessee, in Arkansas and Mississippi, we shall fight on the seas and in the rivers, we shall fight with growing revelry, we shall defend our nation, whatever the cost may be. If we must, we shall even fight in our own fields of harvest and in the cities we dwell in; we shall never surrender, and if several of our states fall to this tyranny, which I fear may happen, then I have faith that at least one State here shall keep fighting this good fight! I have faith that at least one State among us all will keep our way of life sustained like the Israelites were sustained in their toil, until the Old World, with it's grandeur that has stood the test of time, shall see that it must step forward once again into the New World to help end tyranny here like they once did in France nearly forty years ago.

Gentlemen, I shall not go into the specifics, but let me assure you that preparation for our continuing fight have been made, and I think that we shall, in the second half of this year, see much of our land be returned from the tyranny of the Union.

Maj. General McClellan

General,

After several days in long conference with Secretary Stanton and General Halleck, the plans for the general summer offensive have my approval. It is bold, but bold action is sometimes called for. So much is dependent on these movements along all fronts of the war. For all to go as planned, delay no later than the fall on all fronts. You have asked time and again that I give you the tools to finish the job. I have given you those, and I will give you the freedom to carry out the plan as you see fit. You have my support, now go forward and show why you have earned it. My God be with you, and may Providence shine on our noble cause.

"Sans la liberté de blâmer, il n'est point d'éloge flatteur"
"Without the freedom to criticise, there is no true praise"

Britain flees the battlefield, its tail between its legs. It calls for forgiveness as they play the blame game 'It was all her. Honest!' But alas, do we believe them? They destroy the monarchy and begin to create a foundation 'for the people', but what is stopping the new prime minister , now filling the shoes of his Mother, from completing the actions of the mad queen. Power has been moved from one to another, and nothing stops them from continuing to expand across the globe. The British empire spans the earth and continues to plague its way across the waves.

The reason France allies with these tyrants is because Napoleon is scared. He fears that the empire will rear its hungry eyes to across the waters and swallow France in its quest for domination. Maybe the queen was right, maybe France has lost its man hood. The Marx fight for control within the UK but it is a futile attempt, Britain will place a gun in its mouth before it sacrifices its land. Europe must come to terms that there is a wolf among the sheep.
So in closing I must say
Long live the future emperor of the world Edward VII !

And may god help us all.
