Final Fantasy VIII: Tempus Veneficarum

Many centuries ago, the world lay at the mercy of the great Sorceress Hyne, first and most powerful of all Sorceresses. For many lifetimes she ruled the world with an iron fist, extinguishing all resistance with might and magic. After countless failed revolts, the people of the world united under one banner to overthrow Hyne and in a great battle that saw the death of thousands, the great Sorceress finally fell. But her power lived on, passed down to a handful of young women, a blessing and a curse. From these few Sorceresses all others would follow and the gift of magic was passed on from generation to generation.

In the present day true magic is rare, yet anyone with the right training can wield its distaff cousin; paramagic. Born of science rather than mysticism, paramagic is used for everything from warfare to powering cars. It relies on sources of energy, sometimes electricity, fossil fuels or more esoteric sources. The world stands at a crossroads and war is on the horizon; the great Republic of Galbadia continues it's decades long expansion across the western continent, prompting its neighbours the Dollet Dukedom and Balamb to prepare for the worst.

Balamb has no security forces, no army. It's only line of defense lies with Garden, the world's premier military academy. Garden recruits its best and brightest graduates into its own elite mercenary organisation, SeeD, famous for its deadly efficiency and use of the Guardian Force in combat. The GF, part magical battery, part guardian angel, provide SeeD operatives with phenomenal combat power and longevity.

With the world on the brink of a new war and hints of a mysterious presence behind the scenes, a class of Balamb Garden students is preparing for their final test, the last hurdle to becoming a SeeD. Now is their chance to prove themselves worthy, to earn their place alongside the best warriors in the world.

In a nutshell this RP takes place at the beginning of the original FFVIII game, with the characters preparing for their field test to become SeeDs. From there the story will branch out to follow the original plot very, very loosely. At times I or a co-GM may contact players by PM to facilitate certain plot points, but that's far enough into the future that we don't need to worry just yet. There are player 8 slots, including myself. Anyone above and beyond 8 will be put on a waiting list in case anyone drops.

Rules

Oh how I love writing rules...
- While debate is always encouraged, GM's word is final. I won't be using this unless I absolutely have to though.
- It goes without saying, but no godmodding or controlling other people's characters without their express permission. Common courtesy boys and girls.
- No canon characters (even NPC characters will be OC) or expy characters. Please. This RP is about seeing the story from a different perspective. We don't need a Cyther or Kwiztiz.
- Romance is expected (Final Fantasy after all) and I'm not too fussed if it's yuri, yaoi or straight. Just keep it PG-13.
- If you are going to be away fro more than three days, tell us and we can work around it IC. Similarly, if you want to withdraw TELL US, don't just leave.
- This is a Casual/High-Casual RP, but I'm not expecting walls. Two to three paragraphs is a good average, if you can post more, great. If not, don't worry. So long as the content, spelling and grammar of your posts are up to scratch, I won't complain.
- Last but not least, enjoy yourselves! Don't be afraid to do crazy things! If I don't see at least one drunken T-Rexaur fight in this RP, I shall be deeply disappointed.

First things first; your characters are STUDENTS preparing for their final exam. They are not seasoned SeeDs, their GFs are not all powerful and they are not perfect. Over time, your characters will improve, just remember; this is only the beginning. Characters I deem to be too OP will have to be rewritten. Sorry.
Feel free to mess with the structure of the CS; so long as the info is there, it can look as pretty as you want.

Story So far

Chapter 1. The Test

Against the backdrop of an invasion of the peaceful town of Dollet by the militaristic Galbadian Republic, six Balamb Garden students prepare for their field test to become members of SeeD, the world famous mercenary company. Led by their instructor Duncan, the group gears up and mount the airships that take them to Dollet.

As the airships approach the mission site, Duncan begins to explain the mission in depth; the students are to destroy an electrical substation just outside the city, then return to the LZ for extraction. However, Syrus notices a second substation near the first and argues that the group must split up to take them both down. As Duncan wrestles with the implications of this, the airships fly into the range of Galbadian anti-aircraft guns, forcing him to make a snap decision. He orders the group to follow Xerox's plan of using deactivated mechs to destroy the towers at the first substation while he takes down the second with explosives and puts Xerox in charge of the mission.

As Duncan splits off from the group, the Galbadians prepare to receive them. Elsewhere in Dollet, a young Galbadian officer named Ace Fiore leads his troops to an abandoned communications tower outside the city. His orders are to repair the tower and defend it, but his squad is less than suited to the task.

The students begin their attack, taking down the first soldiers to reach their drop zone with ease. Xerox and Charlotte begin to move into the rear of the substation, with Syrus, Eika, Riella and Kein attacking head on.

Ten minutes after the candidates began their attack, the main body of SeeD forces begin their landing at Lapin Beach, shattering the Galbadian's first line of defence. With the arrival of much-needed reinforcements, the Dollet army rallies to counter attack the Galbadian positions. The city rapidly descends into a warzone as the Galbadians are pushed back street by street, house by house.

Duncan finally finishes rigging the second substation for demolition, but runs afoul of Ace's troops sent to investigate reports of a SeeD and is captured. His pet bitebug Vinzer manages to escape and sets off to find the students and lead them to it's master. Meanwhile in the city centre, the main force has secured the area and one of their number, a young SeeD named Jericho, is redirected to support the candidates after news of Duncan's actions at the second substation filter back to Garden.

Eika somehow senses her Instructor's fate and goes off mission to rescue him; Syrus, Kein and Jericho are left with little choice but to follow. Meanwhile Xerox and Charlotte are approaching the rear entrance to the first substation when Rue's animal senses tingle. Realising what has happened to Duncan, Xerox asks Charlotte to go ahead and head to communications tower while he finishes the substation alone. Ace's men bring Duncan to the tower and the Lieutenant prepares to interrogate his prisoner. However before he starts, Ace finishes the repairs to the communications tower, activating the uplink. As the Galbadian prepares his tools to interrogate the SeeD, Eika arrives, followed shortly after by Syrus and Jericho.

While the fight rages atop the tower, Charlotte and Xerox split up. Xerox heads further into the substation and uses his skill as a mechanist to destroy it from within, completing the mission directive. Meanwhile as Charlotte approaches the tower, she remembers the tool given to her by Xerox and activates it; paired with another tool it functions as a teleporter, dragging Xerox through space toward her. A short distance away, Kein finally catches up and engages the remaining soldiers at the base of the tower.

The battle atop the tower finally comes to a head, with the SeeDs battered but seemingly victorious until Ace calls in a mighty airship in support. He and his last remaining subordinates jump aboard as the airship's main guns spin up.

The SeeDs and their students flee, powerless against such an opponent, but Jericho leaves a parting gift by freezing the tower controls into a useless lump. They eventually make their way back to where the airships dropped them off to find their rides have returned for them, called by Duncan's emergency flare. They board just in time and the team escape as the airships shift into aquatic forms and dive under the sea. Across the city SeeD begins to withdraw, leaving pockets of Dollet soldiers here and there. With the tower defunct and the Dollet Army re-entrenched within the city, the Galbadians have failed in their objective. It seems as though SeeD was victorious, but in response the enemy razes the city of Dollet to the ground, murdering countless innocents in the progress. The students can only watch in anguish as they are shuttled back to Balamb Garden, unable to stop the slaughter.

Chapter 2. The Ball

After a long trip back to Balamb Garden, the students split up to wind down after the mission. Syrus and Xerox, suffering from fatigue and serious injuries, are taken to the infirmary where Dr Kadowaki plies her trade. Meanwhile, Eika and Duncan head up to Corvo's office so the instructor can give his debrief as Charlotte and Jericho retire to their rooms.

Once the doctor is done tending to Syrus' wounds, he quietly leaves the infirmary. Convinced that the others have found out his secret, he gathers his belongings and attempts to leave Balamb, only to be waylaid at the entrance by a chipper young girl named Mei Song. His plan to quietly slip away from Garden foiled, Syrus escorts the stranger to the Head Instructor's office, only to find himself invited in for a private discussion with Corvo. He leaves with no illusions as to Garden's view of his attempt to leave and of Corvo's commitment to keeping the young man with the organisation.

The candidate are soon called together by the Headmaster in his office, where the five of them are inaugurated as members of SeeD, the next generation of Balamb's Gardens mercenary warriors. Meanwhile, Jericho finds himself caught up in an altercation with a pair of fellow SeeDs, unaware that the whole affairs is being watched by his friend Gracelyn Trinser, along with the Garden security team via CCTV. Despite the fights and awkward situations that many students find themselves in, Garden hosts the annual Graduation Ball that evening, with every SeeD and student in attendance. Syrus once against bumps into Mei on the dance floor and the two spend the evening chatting over a few drinks, as Gracelyn and Jericho do the same nearby. Duncan, somewhat depressed by news of his official dismissal and secret orders, is trying to drown his misery in alcohol when Xerox interrupts him. The night eventually ends quietly, as hundreds of drunk folk stagger back to their rooms to prepare for another day.

Chapter 3. Timber

Orders have come in for Duncan and his team of newly-commissioned SeeDs. With the addition of a few more experienced operatives, the team is dispatched to Timber via airship and intercontinental rail. Once they arrive, they set about settling into an underground safehouse within the city limits, preparing for the missions ahead. The city of Timber is under occupation by the Galbadian Army and the team has been ordered to kidnap a senior officer from a local military base. The mission is a success, but at terrible cost; three SeeDs lose their lives to take down the cybernetically enhanced Major Wiggs and many more are seriously injured. Duncan takes the time to interrogate the Major and with the information gathered from him, Garden and the Faction issue new orders; the team is to head to Deling City.

Chapter 4. The Capital

The SeeDs leave Timber by train and arrive at Deling City the night before the victory parade for the Battle of Dollet. They break up into smaller groups and make their way to the Lerwick Estate, the seat of the Faction's power in Deling City and home of Duncan's father, Field Marshal Constantine Lerwick. Joined by high-ranking members of the Faction and agents from the rogue Presidential Security Agency, the SeeDs begin to plan their most challenging mission yet; the assassination of President Vinzer Deling.

With a plan in place and the full support of the Faction, the team head out to do the deed. Amid a grand parade through the centre of Deling City, SeeD scatters out to fake a riot, giving them the chance they need to finish the President. Despite hints and rumours of another force at play, SeeD completes their mission and throws the city into disorder. As the team flees the scene to regroup at the Lerwick Estate, their erstwhile allies in the PSA turn on them as if by design. They marshal the confused and leaderless Galbadian Army to lay siege to the Estate, aiming to wipe out SeeD and the Faction in one fell swoop. Despite a valiant defence on their part, the team fall one by one, only to find that the PSA has other plans in store for them.

Chapter 5. The Prison

When the team awakes, they find themselves trussed up in a dingy torture chamber in locations unknown, at the mercy of a psychopath named Mako. Despite physical and mental torture, the team refuse to give him any information and are sent back to their cells. Opportunity knocks when a squad of Galbadian soldiers comes to deliver them food; the soldiers treat SeeD with respect and fear, seemingly sympathetic to their plight. In a surprise turn of events, Sergeant Fresno, the leader of the squad, offers to help the team escape the prison in return for asylum in Balamb Garden. Despite being suspicious of the soldier's sincerity, Duncan accepts their offer and the team hatch a plan to disable the base long enough for them to escape. The tea splits in three, aiming for the main armoury and the team's weapons, the main generator powering the facility's anti-magic field and a storage room where their junction drives are being kept.

Shortly after the tea breaks out, two fellow SeeDs start their own jailbreak. Eika and Jake, leading a crack team of Galbadia Garden SeeDs, storm the prison from the outside to rescue the team. As they head into the base, the SeeDs within manage to take down their targets while freeing another, Minerva Grants, along the way. Jericho's team rendezvouses with those in the armoury in time to storm the main control room, meanwhile Agents Royce and Mako barricade themselves in one of the cells, hoping to avoid the whole affair.

Duncan's hair is a dark grey, the odd white hair poking out here and there. He wears a perpetual dull smile, as if he is only half paying attention. It is very rare to see him in his SeeD uniform, preferring instead to just wear an old military shirt and jeans. His combat kit includes a number of bits salvaged on the battlefield, including a set of Galbadian infantryman's armour, stripped from the blue uniform and worn over his normal clothes without the helmet.

Duncan fights with an assault rifle with attached bayonet, though he tries not to get close enough to use it. Instead he uses Vinzer, his pet Bitebug who he raised from an egg and bound to his service with expensive magic, to distract the enemy while he takes pot shots. Duncan specialises in using support magic to help others and isn't great at aiming attack magic.

Limit Break

Once pushed beyond a certain threshold, Duncan gives himself over to his magical abilities. By casting protective and supportive spells on himself over and over, he temporarily gains ridiculous speed and strength and launches a do or die bayonet charge on the enemy. With the speed he moves at coupled with the extra strength from his magic, Duncan hits the target with extreme force, impaling most normal enemies outright. He often adds a good burst of fire on the impaled enemy, more as a way of adding insult to injury than anything else.

Personality

Duncan is, to put it bluntly, lazy. If he can get away with it he'll foist his work on others; to be fair he does reward those who do help him, earning Duncan a bit of a reputation as the 'Quest Giving Instructor' of Balamb Garden. While avoiding work is his primary concern, Duncan is still a SeeD instructor and he takes pride in his profession. His students are fond of him for his lenient but instructive teaching style, as well as the way he sees himself as just another one of the lads outside the classroom. Over the years, Duncan has become attached to his students and will gladly kill any man who threatens their safety.

Biography

Born in Deling City to a rich military family, Duncan was at a young age given the choice between joining the Galbadian Army and going to Garden. In all honestly, he didn't much fancy either; his youthful dreams consisted of lazing around the bedroom, playing on his computer and chatting over the internet. Duncan Lerwick, scion of one of Galbadia's great military dynasties, wanted nothing more than to be a NEET. After weighing up his options carefully, he chose to attend Garden, reasoning that he would just have to chug along unspectacularly until graduation, a whole decade of chilling out away from the trappings of military life.

By and large, his plan worked out. Duncan never did particularly well in his studies or training, occupying that comfortable middle band in the social hierarchy where he wasn't worth the hassle to bully and noone really bothered getting along with him. He managed to scrape through the combat portion by expending all of his considerable savings on an Odine brand paramagic device, one that allowed him to wipe a monster's mind clean and build it up again from scratch. It took a few years, but Duncan managed to acquire a number of Bitebug eggs and hatch them. There were failures of course, many of them, but eventually he was... more or less successful in rewriting the monster's behaviour, creating a loyal servant he dubbed Vinzer, after Galbadia's, ahem beloved President. With Vinzer at his side and an emphasis on ranged combat in his training, Duncan was able to pass his combat courses with a reasonable mark.

At the age of nineteen, after failing the field test three years in a row, Duncan Lerwick was admitted into SeeD, albeit at a very low rank. After a year of missions, he decided that fieldwork was not his cup of tea and went about greasing palms and bending arms until he was awarded his Instructor's License at 20. Since then he had barely left the Garden, barely even left the classroom if he can avoid it. Unfortunately this year's field test has just come up and Duncan's class is the only one ready for it...

Additional Information

Owns a pet Bitebug named Vinzer. During the mind-rewrite process, Duncan accidentally crossed over a house cat's DNA with the monster's, resulting in Vinzer, well... thinking he is a cat. Most of the time this isn't a problem, as the bug just sits on Duncan's shoulder attempting to lick itself; it is when he tries to nibble your ear that you need to watch out.

Kein Marx

Kein is about the most normal student in the class. His grades are average, he does reasonably well in all subjects and has a pleasant-looking girlfriend in Balamb. He rarely stands out, especially when compared to his more eccentric classmates. However he is a solid fighter, specialising in wind and healing magic with his GF Sachiel and wielding a great naginata. Kein also suffers from terrible luck and is often the first to be poisoned in battle.

Head Instructor Maithwaite Corvo

The third most powerful man in Balamb Garden, Maithwaite Corvo is a decorated ex-Galbadian officer with a talent for corporate ruthlessness. Though his work Garden has become one of the most profitable ventures in history, with an annual turnover greater than some small countries. He is as feared as he is respected by Garden staff and those few students who know him; more than one rebellious instructor has found themselves assigned to a suicide mission days after crossing the Head Instructor.

Mei Song

Born and bred in Timber, Mei has grown up under the oppression of the Galbadian government. However, she has not allowed such matters to weigh her down, instead choosing to live life to the fullest with an unyielding optimism and a naive outlook on the world. She joined the Faction's cause at the tender age of 15, despite her family's wishes, determining to free them from the tyranny of the Galbadians once and for all. Although her combat skills leave little to be desired, she is often heavily involved in negotiations and developing strategies rather than field work, as her charming and happy-go-lucky demeanor proves to be a valuable weapon in itself.

Yoko Ono

A kind and gentle soul, Yoko is a recently graduated SeeD working as an Assistant Instructor at Balamb Garden. Her childhood sweetheart and boyfriend Kein is the most important person in the world to her and she harbours a deep love for him that borders on obsession. Fortunately he is equally enamoured with her, so the two are considered one of Balamb's few perfect couples. Yoko is unusual in that her training stressed strategy and logistics over combat, making her an ideal field adjutant.

• Weapon/Combat Style: Ciel is equipped with a pair of Armoured Boots, which not only provide her with additional leg protection and make her kicks cause more damage, but are specially braced so as to allow her to both jump higher than regular humans as well as prevent her legs from breaking on impact after falling from such a height. Naturally, her fighting style is mostly centered around powerful kicks. She is mostly a physical fighter, and her skills with paramagic are a little below average.

• Personality: Hotblooded, restless and unwilling to show fear of anything. She's also admittedly a little boastful and stubborn, which more often than not can lead her into fights. Ciel doesn't intentionally seek out conflict, although she never seems to rush to a peaceful compromise whenever things get heated. She believes that the best way to show conviction in your beliefs is by pummeling the other guy until he concedes to your point. Of course, that's only if a fight actually breaks out. Generally, she's a bit too lazy to actively pick fights with anyone... She's actually pretty lazy in general, really, which might explain why she only just seems to scrape through her written exams. Ciel is far more interested in slacking off, as well as martial arts and watching those silly shows where a bunch of guys in spandex hit rubber monsters with plastic weapons.

Has a tattoo on his back of his mother's name. He is muscular due to his constant training and very fast. his height is 5'11'' and he has long platinum hair. His eyes are a bluish green like his mother's. Some say his eye's look like the water at Balam beach because they are so clear like the ocean water. He wear civilian clothes mostly. He thinks the SeeD clothes are a little lame. Usually he will wear a sleeve less shirt with jeans and a hoodie with the sleeves cut off.

Biography: Jamie is originally from Dollet city. His mother died when he was 13. She was attacked out of town by a T-Rexaur. She was driving to Deling city for a show when the T-rex attacked her car. She crashed into a tree and the monster tore her out of the car and killed her. His father his a rich senator in Deling city, but after the death of Jaime's mother his father couldn't bare the site of him. His father would say that Jamie had his mother's eyes. Jamie had been proud that he had something of his mother to remember her. His father sent him off to live at Galbadia Garden where Jamie trained to become a SeeD and hopefully make his mother proud. As Jamie grew older the story of how his mother die haunted him. T-Rexaurs weren't know to be in the area and why was there no other cases? He has been to where his mother died several times and investigated the area. He has never found any sign of a T-rex attack, but on his first visit he found a shard of a Galbadian solider's jacket. The closest army station was in Deling city. When he went there to investigate the trail went cold. He knew something happened that was covered up in Deling city his just couldn't figure out what. Jaime had to drop the investigation until he could have more free time after his qualifying exam. For now he will fight for the Garden, but after he graduated he would try and look further into his mother's death and find her killer.

Personality: Jaime loves ladies but is loyal to his friends. He keeps in shape and he is a great detective. He just isn't the greatest when it comes to math or science. Jaime relies a lot on his senses. While fighting he zones in on his target and lets his body react to every movement of his opponent. He is known as the best fighter at Galbadia. He has a great sense of humor and is pretty easy going (Just don't say anything about his mother). He likes to pull pranks on his friends every now and then, but when it is time to be serious he becomes a stone. When he is around ladies he can not help but drool over them. He can be very flirtatious, but he is a gentlemen and would wait on them hand and foot due to him being a mother's boy. He never talks about his father and is quite withdraw when the topic of his mother comes up. He likes to keep his past to himself. He feels it gives him strength. Due to the loss of his mother he cherishes his friends and does everything he can for them.

Charlotte is a young lady with pale skin and long, luscious blonde hair that sweeps her waist. She has rather large dark blue eyes with small facial features and a round face, making her look youthful. She is of average height around five feet and maybe six or seven inches, her body more on the slender side, though she has a modest bust and hips. Her attire usually consists of red, white, and black clothing, her main outfit consisting of a red top coat with long sleeves, a red top laced with white string, a pleated red and black skirt and knee-high brown boots with white over-the-knee socks decorated with red lace. She tops off the ensemble with a white feather accessory in her hair, on the left side of her head.

Charlotte's style comes from specializing in offensive magic. Strangely, however, her weapon comes in the form of a rapier she uses to conduct her magic, often swinging it as one would a wand. While her physical attacks aren't strong, she combines them with her magic for a more effective way of fighting. She is quick and agile, relying on how many attacks she gives rather than the strength of the attack, although if she can sit back and cast more powerful magic traditionally, as well.

For a certain amount of time, dedicated to how much damage she has taken (proportionate to how much "HP"" is left) her spells double in power and come with no cost, effectively becoming a magic machine, firing spells one after another.

Personality:
Charlotte is a calm person who is always collected. She is relatively pragmatic, and is also somewhat cautious, and is hesitant to help strangers, being distrusting of virtually everyone. Above all, Charlotte thinks before she acts, and this extends to her battling. She makes herself clear and concise, not wanting any misunderstandings, and is willing to come off as cold if it means distancing herself from people, this likely coming from any feelings of abandonment from her parents. She will never admit to any weakness of hers, nor is she one to lose her temper. She tries to think as rationally as possible, thinking of all outcomes before making any big decisions. If asked, she is usually willing to explain things to those who wish for such information. She is usually very nonchalant, disinterested in normal conversation, but will partake in it for the sake of not wanting to be rude. She is somewhat overly polite to everyone, even to her opponents.
When speaking of a touchy subject (mainly her parentage) she tends to get defensive, effectively ending the conversation by walking away. She is secretly afraid to get close to anyone or anything, afraid to put her trust in others, and is willing to go along the rest of her life alone if it meant that she would never get betrayed. She is reluctant when put in a situation that requires her to trust other people, and she often shies away from group activities. Nonetheless, she often forces herself to cooperate, as she is well aware that SeeDs are usually put into teams--and will try to go along with it as much as possible, even if she doesn't like it. She will try her best to be as professional as possible should the need arise.

Biography:
For both Lucas and Aurora Aurum, their lives were dedicated to one thing and one thing only: researching the history of the world. The two founded their own, small excavating company appropriately named Aurum Works, their base located close to the Centra Excavation Site. Lo and behold, the two were so into their work that when it was time for Aurora to give birth, there was no time to get to a hospital.
And so Charlotte was born.
Their focus was now shared between their excavating and their daughter, though Charlotte would recall that their work would often take up most of their time. As a result of her parents' jobs, they would often travel from place to place, never truly staying for too long before packing up and going elsewhere where they could find more ruins to study. Charlotte grew up never getting too attached to one place, know it was just a little piece of her life that would eventually be gone.
Eventually, as she got older, she found that as much as she appreciated the history of the world, she didn't really want it to be her job for the rest of her life. She was tired of always moving, wanting to settle down, stating that she would rather do anything else. Her parents took her words literally, and after making a few calls, she found herself enrolled into Trabia Garden. Despite her protests, they told her that it would be good for her.
She had very little contact with her parents after that, and as she felt alone in this strange, new place, she effectively felt abandoned. As she had little choice, Charlotte was somewhat resentful of her position, but she did warm up to it. The idea of battling monsters and defending the peace and whatnot did peak her interest, and so she dedicated most of her days to studying and training. When she did find and bond with her GF, she found that she had a knack for magic, and made sure that she focused on that.
