“Well... Urgent matters. I know you prefer taking care of yourself, anyway."
Adam just waved an absentminded hand in Aoife’s direction as she left, he was slightly disappointed that he wasn't able to watch her practice with his ‘Sight’ but reasoned he could ask to watch it later, after he figured out how to best explain it. With a shrug he returned to his speech making thoughts. A short while later the Headmaster was setting off the young man turned to follow as Miataea spoke up "Good luck to you, A . . . Adam, right? I didn't want to give that speech anyway. I hate crowds.”

“I’m disinclined towards this crowd as well, but nothing is gained by avoidance” He said softly as he nodded a farewell before moving to catch up with the Headmaster. The walk to the Grand hall was a silent affair as the young mage was busy silently formulating his speech. He was partially aware of the look on the teacher’s faces as the Headmaster explained the situation to them; the disbelief easily understandable as his reputation among the staff was not the most exemplary. Still the choice had been made and none of the staff would openly talk back to the Headmaster, so they saved their complaints for later.

Shortly after the explanations Adam was seated in the wings just off stage, his attention seemingly fixed to the floor just in front of him. Internally Adam was receiving a small appreciation for some of the con artists that he had run with, it was a surprising challenge to take his thoughts and put them to words in a way that would let him clearly voice his opinion while also masking it long enough that he wouldn’t be lynched where he stood.

“Adam, you’re up” said one of the staff helping running the opening rights, breaking him from his thoughts. Nodding he stood, took a deep breath and started walking towards the podium that had been set up for this occasion. It was an interesting event to behold as the crowd quieted down when they saw him walking towards the podium, only to break out in quiet murmurings as they began to recognize just who it was.

“For those who are not aware my name is Adam, I am one of the senior students here at Aledine. I am here today to bid you welcome to this reputable academy” He rasped, his voice being amplified by the enchantments on the podium in front of him. “In these halls you will receive the opportunity to grown and learn in academics, skills, habits, and traits that will help you excel in any aspect of life. There are classes and groups involving and dedicated to every branch of hobby and interest with staff that are just as involved and interested as you are. That being said you must prepare yourselves, as failure is inevitable. for nothing can be gained without sacrifice. For each accomplishment that can be acquired a debt must be paid for with perseverance. You will falter as you seek out your goals, some may find themselves buried under pressure, others will come to harm due to the nature of some of the courses that are taught, and a few will have dreams trampled upon. Failure shall walk alongside you always. Always remember the opportunity that has been offered, for learning and experience, only is worth as much as you willing to make it worth. So go and let your actions speak for themselves, as you work among comrades and fellow students, go and prove yourself for all to see.”

Adam’s voice was as even as he could make it as he spoke and everyone could hear the conviction he had in his voice. He was struggling to keep the smirk of his face however, for the context of which he spoke was not quite as innocent as it appeared. It was true that everyone would be given the same opportunity, but Adam knew that few would truly take that opportunity for all it was worth. Many would just pay lip-service to learning, content to coast on by, none truly ready to pay the cost required for true learning. The actions of the many told of a lack of commitment to what it took to master something. They would rise to the plateau of their peers and then be content to waste away.

He motioned to speak more but a rough cough stopped him “It seems I must end here for now, remember; you are only what you make of yourself” he said before turning to walk off the stage as another cough wracked his body. With a smile Adam returned to his seat and waited for the opening ceremony to end, he had just challenged and insulted everyone present. Challenged them to rise up and prove that they are worth the effort and insulted them by implying all they shall face is failure, best yet no one would notice until later.

The crowd clapped as Adam ended his speech. Some hesitantly, unsure what to make of his words, while others clapped mechanically, as if actors following their cue. Still others clapped enthusiastically, honestly moved by his words, whether they detected the hidden depths behind them.

The professors acted much the same from where they sat, except the Headmaster (although this was practically a given). He was theatrically dabbing his eyes while clapping loudly in between. This was partly for fun, but in all honesty, he enjoyed Adam's speech. It wasn't quite what he was expecting, but at the same time, it was very much 'Adam' - well, that was how he felt at least. Now it was time for his part . . .

As Adam stepped down, Render stepped up, and as there paths crossed, he placed a hand on his shoulder to tell him 'Job well done', and continued on. Render went beside the Master of Ceremonies just as he began his introduction of the Headmaster.

"Thank you for your speech, Sir Adam," went the MC,. "Now, it is my pleasure to introduce to you the current and most esteemed Headmaster of our academy. A man who has been with us for many years and hopefully for many years to come, Aledine's Headmaster Render Wiser."

Render smiled and stepped on the podium. "Thank you for the long-winded introduction, Hestral, but I think I can introduce myself just fine," he said lightheartedly. "Now, where to begin . . . ? I'd like to begin by saying that while I wish to genuinely get to know all of you, I'm afraid that won't happen. Not withstanding the fact that talking to you one-by-one and asking you personal questions would make me look more senile than I already am - or as much as the staff suspects I am anyway, oh don't give me that look Licca, I know you were the one who anonymously gave me a memory restoration recipe for my birthday - anyway, talking with you students like that would take up your time.

"Time much better used learning. Discovering. Exploring. Whatever else may end in your life, the gaining of new knowledge will never end. If it does, you might as well consider your life at it's end, because such a stale and boring life where nothing ever changes and nothing is ever new, well, there's no point to it. As students here, I want you to dig up the curiosity you had as a child - the curiosity that caused you to eat things you really shouldn't or touch things that really shouldn't be touched! But temper it with the the wisdom of age! Do not learn things just for the simple sake of profit, but for knowledge itself. No information is useless, and everything has a purpose. Learn for the sake of learning and don't be burdened by the future. For me, that was the key to success."

Render paused for a bit, to let his message sink in and to rest his voice. He had the students attention, and hopefully his words would mean something to them - whether now or later didn't matter.

"I sincerely hope that you enjoy your time here. Not just as a student, but as a person. There is more to discover here than just maps and spells. Academic curiosity and discipline is fine and all, but we want to give birth to active, responsible and amazing human beings, not produce machines! Find a way to make your days here worth it. Who knows? Among the many discoveries you find here, you might even discover something as important as your other half!" he said with a chuckle, and also with much embarrassment on the part of a few coupled students (and some teachers) to whom they knew he was referencing. "Remember this; here at Aledine, we believe in 'Live and Learn' - the learning part, you can leave to us professor and a few musty old books, but the living? Well . . . I say that's all up to you."

Render bowed and the audience clapped. From there on, the ceremony proceeded as usual, and was soon over . . .

As expected, it took a fair bit of time for Adam to make his way to the counters. Once there though, with tray in hand, he swept through the laid out food, taking a sizable portion of… well, everything. A fussy eater he was not, and there was a reason why his meal card was a great deal more expensive than the average student’s. With a loaded tray that could have probably fed half a dozen first years, since he swore they were getting smaller with every year, Adam took up the nearest seat available. He scoffed a bit when those already there edged away from him ever so slightly, but didn’t do anything else. Instead, he simply got to work on devouring the piles of food he had in front of him. He didn’t lack in manners or etiquette when it came to eating, but the dishes simply vanished in moments as if he inhaled them, leaving not even a scrap or morsel behind. It shouldn’t have been possible to look proper at the speed he ate, but somehow Veili managed to.

With the food packed away in record speed as was usual for Veili, he covered up a small burp before he glanced around the cafeteria. Ah… it was always somewhat entertaining to see first years with their jaws dropped at that little display of his monstrous appetite. Leaving his seat, he placed the tray in its proper place before he glanced out a nearby window. There was still a bit of time before the opening ceremony started if he actually wanted to attend, but it didn’t really appeal to him. He respected Render, but the same speech with slight variations grew old after the second year. There was always the option of heading back to his room and lazing about there, but he dismissed it quickly. He was already out and about, no point in heading back and just cooping himself up since he did that so often already. In the end, as he stepped out of the dining hall, Veili decided to laze about near the ceremony. Close enough that he would be able to blend in with the students at a moment’s notice if necessary, but far enough that he could laze about on a tree while the others were forced to sit and listen.
He recognized the student speaker that had been chosen to speak, Adam, but didn’t pay too much attention to the actual contents. Paying more attention to how comfortable the soft breeze and gentle sunlight that poked through the foliage were, the red-head smiled contentedly. Already drifting off, the familiar voice and words of Render were enough for Veili to completely nod off. Sleep claimed him at last and darkness was accompanied by the audience’s applause. His last thoughts before all things faded were that hopefully no one would be dumb enough to disturb his sleep.

After her refreshing bout of revenge – she much rather had taken it further, but witnesses were about! – Lovedaia decided that the library was the best place to peacefully rest until the dreadful and dull assembly. It took but a moment for her to enter, then spending most of her time reading up on the griffins she had seen the previous day. She scanned the books carelessly, easily remembering trivial information though her mind seemed to block the absorption of the more important matters like how a griffin actually digested their food. When Lufu next checked the time, it was about then that she had to leave. She heaved a sigh.

The halls weren’t as crowded as they were before, people having moved towards the damned congregation. Lovedaia shouldn’t be complaining, her presence wasn’t needed and she only went because she had nothing else to do, but, frankly, the Marden girl couldn’t give much about what she should be doing. Also she liked to hear herself; this was most obvious when she muttered every few seconds;

“Damn, shit, stupid – ugh.”

When the assembly began, Lovedaia was as far back as she could be and had her arms wrapped around her body while daydreaming. She imagined herself being a great Magestrava with magnificent powers who could move things with a flick of her wrist; she was a child prodigy and every wanted to be her. It was amazing. Then everyone started clapping and she was slammed back into reality. Grumbling under her breath, she clapped half-heartedly and stared enviously at the headmaster on stage. He probably never had trouble with magic.
