I'll go ahead and put up my first post after I give it another once-over. It may give you guys a little more to work with, and maybe Bliss and Ginger can get an idea for their first posts.

Oooooh I am beyond excited now! Thank you for that first post, Shoh (if I may call you that? If not please don't kill Elora yet ha ha ha). I'll definitely be mulling it over, and will probably get a start on at least outlining my first post while the others get their characters in.

Sounds good! I don't want anyone to have to wait too long before we start, but I'd prefer to wait til everyone's ready and start posting all at once.

EDIT: Note that I edited out a small part of the prologue, so it matches the one in the OOC tab. That was a mistake on my part and I'll do my damnedest to avoid needing to edit any posts in the future.

All right, I pretty much finished up my character sheet. I'll post it up tomorrow morning. It's been a bit since I roleplayed, so I sure there's a whole mess of typos and inconsistencies that I would rather spare everyone from.

Here's Part 1, Shoh. PM's going out now. Oh, and have this incredible urge to just tell you about a favorite song of mine called The Wilhelm Scream by James Blake.

Part 1

Name: Owen

Approximate Age Range: Early 20's

Gender: Male

Appearance: Owen stands at a respectable 6'6”, but long limbs and a twiggy, toneless muscle build makes him almost reminiscent of the wavy tube man seen outside of used car lots. His pale complexion suggests a Nordic ancestry, and his blonde hair and blue eyes all but confirm it. While Owen keeps his hair neat and slicked back with an undercut, a large, untrimmed beard that reaches the top of his chest gives him a more ragged appearance. Bloodshot eyes and a nose that appears to have been broken more than once add to this less-than-professional appearance. His lips, what can be seen of them, are thin and his teeth are beginning to yellow thanks to a combination of cigarettes and coffee.

Attire: Owen dresses casually more often than not. He wears a thin, gray zip-up hoodie over a faded “I'm a Pepper!® ” t-shirt. A pack of cigarettes and a lighter can be see trying to make a daring, if suicidal, escape from the pockets of the hoodie. His dark blue jeans are straight-legged and fit well, although he still wears a brown canvas belt. His socks are a mismatch of whatever the hell he could find, the current ones being a solid black one and an argyle one. His shoes are a well-worn pair of Chucks. In his pants pockets Owen carries a smart phone with a shattered screen, a house key, and a thin wallet.

If you met this person on the street and didn’t know them, what would be your first impression of them?

Generally, the first impression Owen gives is anything but impressive. Despite his height Owen seems more awkward than threatening at first glance, and his mildly higher-pitched voice and occasional stammer certainly does not help him command respect. As well, people tend to notice his constant fidgeting, often making people think he is either on something, up to something, or would be doing something else than talk to them. A lingering odor of stale cigarettes does not seem to make people warm to the idea of him being around, either.

I'm not planning on having any kind of post length rule. In general I think longer more descriptive posts would work better for this RP, and I encourage those kind of posts, but I don't think you should have to adhere to some arbitrary paragraph limit either.

@Shohmyoh It's been a... week. Some personal issues came up that made it difficult to put as much focus into making a character for this. I think the next few days I should have some more free time to post a CS, if that's alright with you?

I understand, real life always comes first. As long as you're still interested that's fine with me.

I would like to get some opinions from everyone though: should we go ahead and start? I think if you have a post ready that you could go ahead and start, and I can just make sure we stop before the first trial. The first trial is specifically designed to give characters a chance to interact anyway, so anyone who starts a little late won't miss much.

I'm still having trouble. It may be because this is my first advanced RP but I keep going 'nope. That character's not god enough' and starting over from scratch.

...really, 'advanced' has such a stigma attached to it, but it's totally understandable. I was always really afraid of it myself, but I'm trying to come out of my casual safe happy zone bit by bit.
...so I promise I won't be anyone to judge, this only is my second advanced group RP x.X
Besides. Usually, your first choice/idea with some build up is best! (I'd say - and many of my previous multiple choice exams in school can attest to that) so don't you fret.

Personally, I don't mind waiting till everyone has their character in, because it most probably won't affect how done rather, lack of done I am, concerning ideas for first post, etc. :)
Your call though, Myoh. Or...Shoh. Really, I'm not sure...

@MyCatGinger I can wait however long I need to, gives me more time to plan and come up with more trial ideas anyway. I think it'd be best to wait til everyone's ready, I'm just self-conscious about making other people wait too long. Maybe I'm worrying too much. Insomnia puts me on edge sometimes.

@Silver Carrot The main thing I would emphasize is just to design the character as though they were an actual person that you could bump into on the street.

If I were making a character based on my own CS, I'd start with their general appearance, how they would fare in a social situation, and a broad idea of their personality, specifically one that appealed to me. A personality I would enjoy seeing interacting with other people and reacting to what goes on around him/her. Then I'd think 'okay, what would this person have done or seen in their life that would have led them to the present day?' and then 'what sort of things would that kind of person like, dislike, and aspire to?'. After that I'd consider what their current situation would be like, their job, marital status, how things have changed since childhood and why, etc. At the end I'd look over it again and add a few little touches, like 'since they care about their appearance, they'd have really neat hair' and 'after that run in at the junkyard I really doubt he'd like dogs'.

Think of it like meeting someone in real life for the first time: you get a general sense of who they are based on the way they look, their mannerisms and how they talk and carry themself. Then as you get to know them better you learn more about their past, what they enjoy/hate and basically why they are the way they are. I would try to create a character's traits in the same order that I'd learn about them if they were real and I was trying to befriend them, rather than pick a couple specific things I like and design everything else around those couple things.

Though I apologize if that's stuff you've already considered or too broad to be helpful. Not saying my way is best either, just that that's how i look at it.

@Silver Carrot Cheers to everything that's already been said. Don't even worry about a thing! This group seems super friendly, and I'm sure no one is going to judge anyone about anything. "Advanced" is unnecessarily intimidating, and all it really means is just a little more character development than: Mary Sue solved all of the trials without even breaking a sweat, woo! And Shoh's right, if you base your character on a model (someone you know), it's easier to fill in the blanks. Don't stress! We're here for ya!
