Fire Spin maybe? I'm not sure, but I can't let Sable get caught in whatever that is regardless, so I guess we're bringing out the big guy after all. "Sable, return!" The red beam of light shot out and pulled Sable back in and he put her ball away before pulling out another. "Alright Murus, ya big guy, time to shine!" Throwing the Pokeball, the Golett would emerge ready to rock and roll. "First, use Shadow Punch to try and catch it off guard, followed up by Mud-Slap! Don't give our green fiery friend time to breath! Alternate between the two moves as you need to!"
Jason Connor

Jason would have crowed in victory if it wasn't for the fact that the figure was clearly still full of fight despite the two back to back blows When it leapt up to the fixtures, Jason was already giving orders, trying to anticipate. "Sable, dodge everything it throws at you, don't stop moving and keep track of what it throws at you." No sooner did he finish saying that than the being a flame threw ember after ember at his Totodile, leaping from fixture to fixture to keep from being pinned down. At this point, Jason decided that dodging everything probably wasn't practical and instead adjusted his orders. "Sable, dodge what you can and block what you can't dodge with Mud-Slap and Water Gun. The moment it presents an opportunity, just like before, hit it with all you got!"
Jason Connor

Jason blinked in surprise at the perfect dodge and counter to his attacks and, as the blazing fist flew towards Sable, he knew he couldn't let her get hit. "Sable, dodge and then more Mud-Slap's. If an opening presents itself, blast it with water gun! But don't let it touch you!" He didn't know how powerful this thing was and he wasn't going to cause Sable to take more damage than he had to.

The sudden vision confused Jason, but he paid attention all the same. The great fire that made Starbor what it is now, but...what was that hole in the sky... However, before he could really try and figure out what he saw, the piece of metal in his hand let off a small eruption, giving the hand that had grabbed it very minor burns and setting the trainer on his ass as he grunted in slight pain and surprise. As the flames all gathered and coalesced into the shape of a Pokemon that Jason had never seen or even heard of before and his Pokedex had no clue what it was either. Regardless, however, Jason was not leaving without that flute peace. So when the figured faced him and gave off the aura of wanting a battle, he pulled out a Pokeball and let Sable out, the Totodile spinning in place before facing it's opponent. Jason smiled slightly, this little crocodile was prone to never want to be alone, but he knew he could count on her when it came time for battle. "Alright Sable, since this thing's made of green flames, what say we use Water Gun to try and put them out. Following that, let's hit it with a Mud-Slap!"

Unsurprisingly, as Jason descended down the stairs, the dark was the most prevalent thing that he could see as he followed the stairs down into the earth, eventually returning both Occisor and Slayer to their balls just to avoid accidentally knocking one of them over. Time seemed to stretch here, as he had no real source of light aside from the light his phone's flashlight offered, but he was willing to bet that when he finally saw the natural light, he had been walking down for some time. He turned off the flashlight off and approached, squinting his eyes as the sun hit them and then staring in awe of what he was standing in.

All around him showed a place caught in time, stone grown over with greenery but, despite everything, looking like it was as fresh as the day it was placed. In the middle as Jason looked around, sitting in the center of a pedestal, was what looked to be a piece of a flute, something that seemed to draw in the aspiring champion. The green flames continued to dance around, doing little more than existing and Jason, after staring at the piece of flute for a few minutes, sighed. "Well, fortune favors the bold and all that." Reaching out, he clasped the flute piece.

The Sergeant paused as they asked about the exact method of dealing with the monster in question. Obviously the quickest and least dangerous thing to do, that he was sure was the best way to do it, was to kill the beast. If there were scientific inquiries into the beast, there were autopsies and similar techniques the corpse would be more than sufficient for, but capturing it offered insight into behavioral patterns, diet, calls and other things a corpse couldn't offer. Admittedly, Monreu wasn't sure which he'd prefer and he knew the commander just wanted it neutralized, alive or captured. After some consideration, he nodded, mostly to himself. "Objective is simply neutralizing the threat, so if we can capture, the attempt can be made, but I'd prefer we all get home in one piece, so kill it if necessary." He started to turn, then paused.

"My job is to make sure you all get home in one piece and alive. I'll do what I have to to complete that objective, clear?"

The guardsmen jolted slightly in surprise when the water armor appeared on them, but, despite their insistence that they were fairly green compared to other members who usually did these escorts, didn't panic or get distracted too much. The Corporal was the only one who spoke. "Some warning next time would be appreciated." They all moved around to get a feel for the extra protection as Nolan used his True Sight to look for the very souls of the predators. And while he could see them, they were incredibly fast moving and hard to keep track of, with a pair even jumping over the caravan, attempting to spoke the horses. To the credit of the animals, however, they held their ground, true to their training. PFC Tanson suddenly fired a burst into one of the bushes to his right, blue lines of energy burning through the underbrush. "It's not just fucking Asterins, they're swarming!" In response, three Asterins rushed at Nolan and Ria, the two seeemingly least well protected members of the caravan. They could both see the toxin Ria had heard rumors about practically dripping from their mouths.

One of the other PFCs opened fire in support of the mages as the other three gunned down the Asterin as they large and agile lizards rushed out of the underbrush. "Watch the upper branches," the Corporal called, "they're not ashamed to get the literal jump on us!"

Jenna raised an eyebrow as D'Angelo left, but she didn't speak up or try and stop him, instead listening to Ariel and chuckling slightly at her suggestion. It would seem that her gift of magic for the young woman had induced a sense of loyalty stronger than she normally saw in new members, but she was glad all the same. Having an older, even if newer, member of the guild on the job would be good and improve the odds of the job's requester not turning them down outright. "Go ahead, Ariel, you can go as well. Just remember, hourly check-ins. Amelia, your dad's entrusted me to keep you safe and this job should be perfect to ease you into guild life. However, you have my number if you need someone you know to talk to at any point, alright?"

The silence was heavy after Helga said her piece and Jason didn't attempt to break it, following with Slayer and Occisor in tow as they moved on. The silence wasn't oppressive, like it had admittedly felt before the brief, if meaningful, conversation, it more induced a degree of contemplation in Jason as he and his partners followed their wood-dwelling guide. Jason wasn't as naive as he was sure Helga took him for, the scars of what Cipher had done were evident on almost every Evigian native he met. The way they avoided any talk of Cipher was the most apparent, but with some people it was the way they would talk about the organization, the barely contained hatred and contempt and desire for...well, the young and aspiring champion would say revenge. At his dad's suggestion, before meeting with Kapoc and meeting Slayer, Jason had reached out to the Hoenn region's champion, Steven, and talked with him about his goal in Evig. As he followed Helga and walked, something he'd said resurfaced.

"Becoming the champion of a region is more than just being the face of the League, Jason. It involves taking on the future of your Region and proving that the darkness within its legacy does not define it. Teams Magma and Aqua were children compared to Cipher and we have second hand accounts, none of us lived what the Evigians did. If you do become champion, prove you're committed to them and show them you can help build a better future."

Of course, Helga's shared experience, as non-specific as they were, not only reinforced Steven's point but also reminded Jason he was still an outsider striving for a League Championship in a region he didn't grow up in. Which only drove him to prove he was deserving of it. However, before he could let his thoughts wander too much further, the sight of the glowing green balls grabbed his attention. When Helga said not to worry about them, he nodded and continued to follow, watching them grow in number as they got closer to whatever they were approaching. After a few more minutes of trekking, they finally arrived at a grey building that almost seemed like a plant nursery. Looking at it, the building seemed to descend into the Earth and, as he looked at it, he recognized the symbols and markings from the ruins in Route 4, where he'd caught Murus. "This is as far as I can take you," Helga said while turning around to face him. "Remember what I said, I could only lead you here, but I cannot protect you. This is something you must do on your own."

Jason nodded and then looked at the building, taking a deep breath. He was here to explore this and find out the information that restless scientist was trying to prove. And it started here. "Right, well, in I go. Occisor, Slayer, you two ready?" The two Pokemon nodded, Occisor much more confidently than Slayer, and the three strode into the ruins, wary but ready.

Jason didn't speak for a long time after Helga finished speaking, walking in silence. He'd seen similar looks, heard similar tones, in his conversations with Adrianne when she'd briefly mention Cipher. And we complained about Team Magma and Team Aqua back home...they were kids playing games compared to what happened here... As he glanced at Slayer, his first partner in his journey, the young man realized that there was a good chance that Slayer was, at the very least, descended from the part of the Pokemon population that managed to avoid getting turned into Shadow Pokemon or culled by Cipher, if not a survivor of the devastation himself. In fact, as he paused to reach down and hug his partner, he pulled Occisor's ball off his belt and let the Scyther out. There was a confused "Scy" as it saw Helga and then turned around just in time for Jason to give it a hug as well.

"Hey buddy, I...you were justified in what you tried to do when we met." The Scyther stared at Jason for a moment before nodding and giving a hug back awkwardly as the trainer looked at Helga. "I get that I may seem young and dumb to you. I get that I seem naive as being from Hoenn and not seeing everything that happened first hand would make me seem, but I want to make a difference here and...I want to keep Cipher from ever having the power to make a come back. Let's get you your moss and me to that Shrine, and then I'll continue my journey and get strong enough to stop anyone like that from gaining that kind of power again. You have my word."

The mention of one of the cities dad had said he'd spent a lot of time helping people in made Jason grimace, though he was quick to wipe the look off his face. His parents had seen the aftermath of most everything, he didn't want to imagine how seeing it happen looked. His response was not the most forthcoming, however, as he wasn't sure how to respond. "Have you ever seen something that had no concept of good or evil? A creature that had no emotion, no desires, and no sense of self? A soulless killing machine that does not differentiate from Pokemon or trainer? That is what a Shadow Pokemon is; a mindless tool for violence with great, yet awful power." Fucking hell, if that isn't despicable... They sounded like something Magma and Aqua would have used, if they could have, and Hoenn would have become a warzone if they'd had access to that kind of power. If he was honest, as the whole mess with Kyogre and Groudon and both Team Magma and Team Aqua had been dealt with by the time he was looking at becoming a trainer, if they'd known had to get or make Shadow Pokemon, he had to wonder how Hoenn would have looked. Sieggolt City wasn't a name he knew, but he wasn't sure prying was a great idea.

After mulling these thoughts over for a moment, Jason spoke again. "I...did they ever say why? Or did they just attack without regret and without a second thought? They wanted to control the region is what I've been told, why decimate it like this? I just..." He took a deep breath. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't be prying into it all like this, especially when you went through it, these can't be pleasant memories. I'll stop."
Jason Connor

The pain and bitterness in her voice at the mention of the Shadow Pokemon caused Jason some measure of hesitance. He had known that Cipher's time in control of the region had left scars on the people as well as the Pokemon, his parents talked about it all the time, but this was the first time he'd seen anyone acknowledge it. Living out here amongst the Pokemon...guess I can't say I'm all that surprised she saw some of the worst when they came after the Pokemon here. He let the silence sit a moment longer before he spoke. "If I may, and I understand if you don't want to, no one when I first came to Evig wanted to either, but...what did Cipher do to those Pokemon to make them Shadow Pokemon? What did Cipher even hope to gain? I...I grew up around them, spent a lot of time among them when I was exploring in Hoenn, spelunking, mountain climbing, all of it. I just...I don't see what they did as right I guess."
