Facebook as a medium

I've been toying with the idea of creating a community of fictional characters that would exist over Facebook. I think it would be pretty interesting to see how the characters get to interact through the dynamics of social media. (Chat, image sharing, "likes", gossip, etc)

What are your opinions on the idea? Is it doable?

Sounds like a viral campaign taken a little more seriously. Many shows, films, and comics will create FB pages, but they don't actually pay for people to market by way of in-character 'interaction'. As interesting an idea this is in general, it sounds like a very thoughtful and unique way to stir up intrigue about a book or comic.

A friend and I did this: we made a few of our characters FB pages and they would interact through the social media. It was just a lot of work, because we were each juggling several characters, and we eventually lost interest. So I recommend staying away from having one person use to many characters, but I think if each person stuck with just one or two, it'd be pretty fun.

That sounds awesome to me! The only problem I could forsee is a few people were complaining of being locked out of their facebook accounts because the site wanted them to prove that they were who their profile said they were. Also, Facebook may deny some names if it doesn't think they sound like 'real names'. But I'm sure there's ways around all of this! If you do start doing this, I would definitely be interested!

For those who use facebook frequently, I guess this could interest them.

But being the sort of person who only uses facebook to...be reachable by family and friends, I can't see the appeal personally.
