TL;DR Overview of Indiga
- Indiga is a decently populated port city-state in the world of Syindra.
- Indiga doesn't have much land due to the surrounding mountains and dangers of the environment around them. Much of the population lives crowded together.
- There is a large disparity between the rich and the poor, with very few middle class. Much of the wealth exists with Trade Merchants.
- Due to the city-state's location, it is an ideal trade location with the various other city-states of the world.
- Food shortages are fairly common, especially for the lower classes. Land for crops is rare, and mostly exist on the outer fringes of the city, which are more dangerous. Fishing is the main, reliable source of food, all other food comes from trade with other city-states.
- The only major natural resource the city has access to is a nearby forest of high quality woods and lumber. The forest is owned, protected, and maintained by the Sailor's Guild, specifically the Shipwright's Company.
- Indiga is also quite well known for its Academy and Library, both of which are the largest in the world.
- Indiga has three main influential bodies. The first and most powerful is the Sailor's Guild, which controls all trade by sea, ship building, and the fishing industry. The second is the Academy Governors, who are in charge of the Academy, Library, and are in charge of all the record keeping for the entire city. The third is the Indigan Council, who are in charge of the city's taxes, military, and day to day operations of the city not controlled by the Academy and Sailor's Guild.
- A fourth faction recently joined the city in the form of a large ghetto of immigrants from the nearby city-state of Crimsia that was destroyed by an erupting volcano.
- Like most city-states, magic is rare in Indiga, but not unheard of. Passive or craft based magics are much more common than offensive magics. Indiga takes a neutral stance on magic, viewing only those that are useful to the city's survival as "good". There is no Light or Dark magic, just useful or harmful.
- Technology is pre-industrial, with blacksmithing and woodworking being the most prevalent. Electricity is nonexistant.
- The Crimsian immigrants have recently been in a state of unrest, crying unfair conditions, but their cries have fallen on seemingly deaf ears.

IN CHARACTER INFO

The year is 714 on the planet Syindra. This world has a large amount of oceans and a few large continents, peppered with several city-states, encompassing many races. Many of these city-states are so distant from one another, with dangerous wildlands in between, that they have very little interaction with one another. There is some trade, mostly along coasts, and travel is slow. This has caused each city-state to develop into unique, distinct culture, one of which is known as Indiga.

Indiga is a republic city-state, at the end of the long and massive Violetta Bay. It is a bustling port, specializing in trade and shipcraft, dominated by humans, though open to other races as well. Magic is quite rare in Crimea, and the only open use of it is for practical purposes. Practical, passive, and craft-based magics are view positively, while destructive and combative magics are highly frowned upon. It is formally governed by the Indigan Council, elected representatives of various boroughs of the city. However, the true power comes from the Sailors' Guild, the group that controls the Shipwright's Company, the fishing industry, and all sea trade. While they are the most influential of the groups, another is always rivaling them, the Academy Governors. These governors run the world renown Indigan Academy and the Library of the Skies. In addition to controlling these iconic landmarks, they also maintain the record keeping for the entirety of Indiga. All other responsibilities, control of the military, taxes, and day-to-day operations of the city-state.

Indiga is a fairly peaceful place, with no nearby city-states to endanger it. They simply have to protect the citizens from the natural, and unnatural, dangers in the wilds outside of the city. This is made a lot easier due to the mountains the encompass the western side of the city, with a single pass into the city. Silver Pass is walled, gated, and guarded at all times. The coast and docks are patrolled and protected by the Indigan Navy. The biggest dangers are starvation and disease, especially in the poorer boroughs. With little fertile land, the main source of food comes from fishing, with some coming from trade with other city-states. Even with these dangers, the city maintains a large, crowded population, the majority living just above true poverty. The wealthy consist of merchant families, the middle class are shop owners and artisans, and the lower class are the manual laborers.

Recently the closest, island city-state of Crimsia was devastated by a massive volcanic eruption. A prophet of Crimsia had seen the eruption in a vision, and with the aid of the Indigan Navy, much of the population was evacuated. They now reside in a ghetto of Indiga, and maintain their own small community, economy, which is for the most part, self-sufficient. They have recently tried to have a representative put upon the Indigan Council, but were rejected. Since then, there has been a large amount of quiet unrest and grumbling among the Crimsians. Many fear this unrest will reach its explosive tipping point soon.

Out of Character Info
This is a character driven RP, the storyline will be driven by the Crimsean Unrest. You can be any sort of citizen of the city, so long as it is not an extremely prominent figure, i.e. Council Member, Academy Governor, etc. I'm open to whatever magic you wish to use (pending approval of your character sheet), but please keep in mind that the average person simply knows that magic exists. They will not likely know names of magics, specific details, and will often view it with a mix of fear and skepticism. Technology is pre-industrial, with blacksmithing and woodworking being the dominating crafts.

When making a character, you have several open options to choose, though must be approved by me. I'm open to just about any race, so long as they are from the world Syindra and from this dimension. No gods/demi-gods, angels/demons, werewolves/vampires/dragons/half-dragons please.

I will answer any and all questions about this world I'm building here, and in the OOC thread which will be coming soon. Thanks!

So, how would you like your magic system to work? I'm thinking of a fisherman character, whose magic gives them an intuition as to where other beings are located. They use it to catch fish, but it could also work on people, other animals, and ghosts, if those exist here. Is that okay?

NAME: Till "Sea Blood" Hermann
AGE: 25
SEX: M
Race: Human

APPEARANCE: A medium sized man who stands at 5'8 makes up for lack of height with a broad body type. Facial features of a Northman he has a round stout face and soft rounded nose. Not originally from Indigna he holds a naturally pale complexion (tanned from the sun) and pale grey eyes to match. He keep his hair at shoulder length and it is a dirty blonder color. His hands and feet callused from long days at sea and travel, he looks older for his age. He wears common clothes, a blue tunic and dark brown trousers.

PERSONALITY: A curious and adventurous type he has found himself in a variety of situations as a result. His time travelling before joining the military and his eventual service has taught him that many times the only way to accomplish things with those you can trust. Often strangely upbeat, he finds that life is too short holding anger he attempts to keep people around him in high spirits and will try to decrease stress in high situations. He will not stray from battle but finds that there are many other things that can be done before violence must enter the equation. Strongly loyal to the Indigan Navy and its people.

OCCUPATION: Sailor/Trader

BACKGROUND: Born in the farther northern city state of Thuaidh where the nearby sea only melts for the summer months he was not originally of the sailing persuasion. His father a humble and often times meek man, and mother a fierce and strong woman of the north many times clashed eachother. He saw from early on what a place of constant fighting can do and at first chance around the age of 14 left home and has since never looked back. He traveled, never staying in one place for too long lived by panhandling or forming tight knit groups with other vagrants in the city-states he stayed. By the age of 16 had attempted to enter into Indiga by smuggling himself aboard a trade ship. Unfortunately he was caught and was given the choice of imprisonment or serving on the ships he had tried to smuggle himself on. Not being the one to be stuck in a cage, he took the choice to be apart of the Indigan Navy. Military life surprisingly suited him, he found himself following orders and doing tasks without hesitation. Rising through the ranks, he was quickly leading a small portion of sailors on a ship as an NCO. After 8 years his enlistment was up he was a freeman, and settled down in the sailing district living off a boat he had bought with his earnings from his time in the Navy. He will often hire his boat out for small shipping and fishing expeditions. He isn't a prominent figure by any means but is apart of the Sailor guild by default because of his profession and former military service gives him ties to the Indigan Council.

SKILLS: Boating and Barter.

WEAPONS: Standard issue pike and short sword from his days in the Navy.

Can't wait to get posting with everyone!

@Wormgod I'm fairly open about magic so long as it is kept in check, and also has a progressive system. By this I mean, a novice at the magic would obviously not be very good at it and not succeed every time, whereas a Master in any magic would not only be quite powerful, but extremely rare. I look at it like a 4 Tier system, with Novice, which are semi-rare; Competent, which are rare; Expert, very rare; and Master would be extremely rare. I also prefer there to be drawbacks and dangers in magic useage, for example, A Fire Mage might burn himself constantly, as well as feeling drained of energy after performing his magic.

As for your magic specifically, not only do I like the idea, but I imagine it would be looked favorably upon by the Indigan people. Come up with a name for it, and it sounds like a type of Scan or Detection magic. So if you could provide a Name and perhaps a base description of some of what it can do, and maybe a few drawbacks, I think we can make it work. I will be posting Shielding magic sometime soon, so if needed, perhaps follow a similar format?

@Saffron - Your character sheet is accepted and I will add it to the list.

Awesome! I'll post my form here, a WIP.

Ignore the, eh, sniffing glue. I found this photo on an anti-drug newspaper article. Credit goes to Reuters.com and photographer Anton Denisov.
Name: Artyom Kozhin
Race: Boring ol' Human
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Hometown: Indiga
Occupation: Fisherman
Skills: Fishing, cooking, business
Magic: Life Detection - Artyom is gifted with a weak ability to detect creatures with souls through a strong feeling or intuition. He uses this ability to assist in locating fish, after exhausting the usual methods, like following the birds, searching near reefs, etc. This ability does work on humans, animals, and ghosts, but fails on soulless creatures, such as undead and enchanted objects. The magic is easiest in close range and becomes progressively harder the more distance is used. After a mile, it only hurts him. If used for too much or at an impossible distance, Artyom suffers a terrible migraine. It is possible for Artyom to suffer an aneurysm as a result of this magic.
.
.
.
Artyom was raised on the outskirts of Indiga, in a small house on the docks. His father was a fisherman and determined to raise Artyom on the sea. His mother, a housewife, had no qualms with this, since Artyom loved the water so much he learned to swim before learning to walk. Once he was old enough, his father took him on their company's boat for the early morning catch. Besides the usual tired whining, Artyom loved it. He went on many more, and soon started to help the men, pointing out the largest schools of fish, and telling them to avoid spots with whales or sharks near. One-too-many accurate predictions and the men got spooked. They told his father to explain himself, 'why was his son so good, he's not even a real fisher.' His father sat him down for a long talk, and Artyom explained that is he concentrated hard he could 'feel' the creatures nearby. First the men on the boat, then the fish below, and the birds above. Bigger things are easier to pinpoint, but they also hurt more. He just wanted to help out.

His dad laughed, finding this rather amusing for some reason. Explaining this to the men, Artyom was let back on the ship. Some of the guys were still suspicious, but they soon realized his gift was very helpful. It cut down on time, allowing them to catch more and avoid danger. Once he grew big enough, Artyom was allowed to start fishing too. In five years they gained enough money to purchase another boat and expand their shop. The disaster at Crimsia helped too by giving them more customers. Artyom used his earnings to buy a small house, and now lives there. He still works for the same small fishing company.

(Note: I'd say Artyom's a "novice" with his magic.)
(Also, bleh, Artyom's history sucks, but oh well.)

✗History/Biography: "Momma, when is Papa coming home?"

Evangeline tugged at the corner of her mother's apron. The large, strong woman stared out of the small kitchen window with a blank and empty stare. There was no reply. There never would be. It had been an entire year since Evangeline's father had gone to sea. Rumor had it that he made some true riches and left his family behind, off to find something better- if you could call it that. Some claimed he had just died a watery death, like most men did. It wouldn't be the first time news traveled back to their small section of another taken.

A few years before that the Delvine family was happy and complete as they could be. Mr. Delvine would go on his boat trips, come home after many of months with money, treasures, and exciting stories. Evangeline would crawl into her father's strong arms, her large green eyes looking at him in complete awe as he showcased his life before her. He was her hero, and she was his princess.

Years and years passed and Evangeline got older, the stories still remained in the whispered slurs. "Did you hear her father left the two women alone to fend for themselves? I heard he has a wife and child in every city from here past Crimsia!" These stories brought only anger to Evangeline. She had a feeling her father was alive, and nothing would stop her from proving it. Often being spotted with and around the boys, she spent a lot of time learning to swim, sail, fish, and fight. Though her mother didn't say so directly, Evangeline could feel in her mother's icy stares that she didn't want her only daughter, her only family member left to even think about stepping foot near the water ever again. But time after time and day after day, Evangeline swam, sailed, fished, and fought.

It wasn't a huge surprise when Mrs. Delvine forced her daughter to learn another trait during their hardships, and that skill was sewing. Eva took it upon herself to make a living for the two women, taking up jobs here and there whether they had to do with sewing, fishing, or some small manual labor to keep her mother quiet and not belittle Eva into an early grave.

Evangeline yearned for more. She wanted to find information about her father, and would not stop until she did.
