This future world is almost entirely urbanized, at least on land. As far as the eye can see, which isn’t far, there is industrial wasteland, with the vast majority of people living in cramped apartments and often struggling to make a living. The most successful members of this new society are corporations. They have grown to massive sizes as they’ve swallowed their smaller competitors and found more ways to force people to pay more for their services. They’ve snuck their powerful influence into governments all over the world. Police forces have grown to mini-armies, using whatever brutality they want to.
Most importantly, however, genetic research has prospered. Well, some would say prospered. In its early days, it was aimed at the eradication of lethal genetic diseases, and it was often a miraculous success. Eventually (About thirty-five years prior to the roleplay), scientists were paid to develop the ‘Safety and Security’ project. Human genes were engineered so that their bodies could not produce certain vital amino acids. A system developed in which excessive police brutality wasn’t needed: Anyone who resisted their government could now be denied these amino acids, causing them to die a slow and painful death that usually would take days.
Along with this development came a new type of discrimination. Any person who possessed the gene, and was therefore able to make their own amino acid, was required to wear an armband that marked this “disorder”. They were targeted by endless propaganda telling citizens everywhere to beware. They began to face sickening harassment from the police forces, as well as job and housing discrimination, among other things. Small blood droplet scanners designed to determine the presence of the engineered gene became more and more common, showing up at any office with job interviews, bus and train station, etc.
Many of the “Disordered” did not want to put up with this, as they were all too often restricted to degrading jobs and sickening poverty. Some began to call themselves “Whole” and created an underground network of them, working with certain “Ordereds” to overthrow the corrupt government. There are even scientists on their side, synthesizing black-market versions of missing amino acid for “Orderly” rebels.

Notes:

Technologies other than genetic engineering are common. There are cybernetics and bionic eyes and technologies that reroute motor signals from the brain to an otherwise disabled limb. Obviously, your character can have things like this, but common sense. I wouldn’t be pleased to see shoulder-mounted missiles or something.
With the above note in mind, the rebels do have a lot of illegal weapons, and other contraband, such as, wait for it...books.
A lot of the underground resistance is literally underground, with secret entrances in houses, abandoned buildings, etc.
Ordered; Genetically engineered so that they lack a gene that produces one kind of vital amino acid. Often in existence because of in vitro fertilization, artificial incubation, and/or surrogate mothers.
Disordered/Whole; Not genetically engineered. Produced the old fashioned way, if you know what I mean.
The amino acid (whichever one it may be) is delivered to people’s homes in the form of an ordinary pill bottle with a month’s supply. They usually wear devices that remind them to take the pills if they forget.
(Illegal) research in gene therapy is bordering on allowing the Ordered to become Whole, but the treatment process will be long and dangerous because it weakens immune systems. This can occur later in the roleplay.

Rules:
1. No one liners with crappy English. At least a post with two lines. (We understand that sometimes it’s difficult to write a huge amount.)
2. Minimum character age is 15.
3. Do not kill other characters without permission
4. If you go away for more than four days, let a GM/Co-GM know. Otherwise, your character may not get his dose of amino acid.
5. Datadogie is the Co-GM of this RP. Other Co-GMs may be appointed, but as of the the creation of this RP, he is my right hand. Do not ask to be a Co-GM.
6. I reserve the right to add rules.
7. Your character can be an obedient member of society or a rebel. We’re open.
8. You can have as many characters as you can effectively roleplay, so you're the judge of that.
9. Please put ‘Ratte Factory’ in your CS to confirm you have read the rules
10. Have fun.

Name: Rufus Maxwell
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Appearance: Height of 6'1, with short black curly hair and dark green eyes. Kind of bony-looking, with protruding cheek bones and an almost perpetually-serious or worried expression. His hands are calloused and scarred from years of hard work. He has a nasty-looking burn across his chest (which is unlikely to ever be seen) and upper left arm (unlikely to be seen either). He has dark olive skin, but looks sickly in the face, with thin lips. He looks undernourished in general, but he's adequately strong, especially when he actually does get to eat something good.
Ordered or Disordered: Ordered but wants to join the rebels.
Personality: Not very talkative, but polite enough. Observant. Used to be sensitive but has gradually learned to suppress his emotions, unless he's around dogs. He loves dogs, will talk to them and show them off to people while gushing about how great they are. Of course, when dogs aren't in the mix, he's pretty short and wary of people. He wants to become a rebel badly, but right now he's too scared of not getting his pills.
*Biography/History: Rufus, like most people he's known, was created in a lab and raised by adoptive parents. He grew up like everyone else, learning to be obedient and getting through school. One day he had an unpleasant run-in with an elderly, homeless Disordered, who informed him what Disorderds are: people who don't need to be constantly given pills in order to stay alive. It shook up Rufus, who before had assumed they were simply terrorist types. The more he thought about these people, the more he envied them, and the more violence and poverty he paid attention to in the streets, the more he sympathized with any "criminals". He hasn't voiced any of these concerns, although he has tried to purposely stop taking his pills. The result was being so sick and weak that he couldn't stand it and ended his little strike.
When he was 18, he struggled to find work, and ended up as a hard laborer, switching from job to job over two years. Luckily, after that, he started working at a small, under-funded dog shelter, which he loves. His burn is from an explosion set off, apparently by unknown rebels, while he was on a train to work at age 21. He spent two weeks in the hospital, and is sometimes asked to speak in schools about how dangerous rebels are. He usually declines on the grounds that he's still traumatized and doesn't want to talk about it.
Other: Ratte Factory. :T

Name: Joy Watts
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Appearance: Height of 5'3 with chestnut-brown hair down to her shoulders, which she usually ties back. Usually wears sunglasses. Has a scar on the top side of her wrist. Icy blue eyes and a concave nose, with an oval-shaped face. Very pale skin, and sharp nails painted black. Thin frame. Most of her clothes are discarded ones, so she has lot of baggy, torn clothing.
Ordered or Disordered: Disordered.
Personality: Above ground, she's shy and easily-startled. Any noise will cause her to run and hide. But under ground, she almost seems to run the show. She's loud, confident, outgoing, and assertive. She's in charge of procuring food for the rebels by dumpster diving and salvaging "ugly" fruits and vegetables, and she's very good at it. She's planning on growing food under light made by a generator, but this hasn't been arranged yet. She's happy to trade things and even give it away for free. Although food is her main job, she also participates in planning and events.
*Biography/History: Her parents were both gunned down by police in the earlier days of the Safety and Security Project while protesting it on the grounds of it being unethical, when Joy was around seven years old. It was a completely unexpected massacre, and one of the last protests in the city. Joy spent the rest of her childhood in an orphanage, was released at 18. Unable to find a job she could sustain herself with that wasn't humiliating, she shortly after joined the rebels.
