(just another saying for a witch that doesn't know alot of spells)

"Don't be silly." Vance said. "It's not a waste of time at all. Now stop fretting, will ya? Everything will be fine. We just need to stop by the library and pick up some reading material to start with."

Devika's nervousness was concerning him. She wondered how long she had been feeling like this, as well as if she had been taken advantage of before.

Devika gave him a confused look. "I can get books on magic at the library? Geez. I feel left out." A tiny smile twitched across her face, and she hesitantly pushed back her hair, only for her curls to stubbornly bounce back into place.

"So... I've never met anyone else who could do anything remotely magical. When did you know you were different?" She had no idea how that kind of thing was supposed to work, and was utterly curious.

"Well yeah you can find books on magic." Vance said. "The thing is, people pretend that it's not scientifically possible, so it doesn't "exist". Personally, I think it's for the best, otherwise we'd have peoples popping up from the woodworks trying to do "research" on people like us."

"I found out when I was young." he said, answering her question about when he first discovered his powers. "My neighborhood was fugly when growing up, and when I found out that I could do things normal people can't, I used it to my advantage. Never stopped since. Of course, I was less angry then...and my parents were alive...and less assassinated."

"Ah... I see." She fidgeted, unsure of what to say to that. She could have said that he should have been glad to know his parents, that not knowing them was worse. But that would have been both rude and wrong. She did not know her birth parents, but the ones who'd chosen to adopt her had been kind, loving, and accepting of everything, even after she'd started showing her powers when she was five. They were still there, and they loved her.

"S-so... where do I even start? How do I know what I can learn and what I can't?"

"Well, the most important thing about your abilities is realizing what you know already." Vance said. "You said you can move water to a degree, right? And you said you can hide your power from others, which is very good in itself in a world like this. Though I wonder..." Vance began to circle her. "Do you think that you're actually suppressing your magic? I mean, like, you could have dormant magic abilities inside you, but you don't know it because you've tried so hard to hide them from the world. Of course, that's just a guess, but there's only one way to find out. We need to get to a safe place and lift that hiding spell."

Devika sighed softly, pushing back her hair. "It's not a spell, it's a charmed item." She tapped the thick bracelet around her wrist. "It was one of the first spells I mastered. My power doesn't turn off unless I'm unconscious." Her eyes followed him, turning her head as he circled her. "I haven't been without it for... well, a long time. My power only gets stronger. I... I don't know if I can even handle what you want me to do." She wasn't too sure that it was a good idea, not at all.

Vance eyed the bracelet. "Oh, so this is the inhibitor." Vance said. "Well, that's simple. But as for letting your powers loose, you won't know how to control them if you don't experience them head on. If something really is chasing you, you'll need to be ready to defend yourself. Now c'mon, we should get to the library and borrow some books before it gets too dark, okay? Don't worry, I'll be right here with you."

Vance was trying to get her to relax, but he really wasn't sure just how much of his words were really getting through to her. Perhaps she was just too scared...

Devika heard Vance's words well enough, but she was so afraid. There had been incidents in her past, where her power had overgrown her inhibitor. She would never forget those moments, as they were a start reminder that she was dangerous, that she always had to be in control of herself. Now he was telling her to lose that control as if it were nothing. A faint sigh escaped her. "Yes, let's go to the library. Maybe the books will calm me." She smiled, but it was nervous. "Lead the way."

Vance smiled as he nodded, beginning to lead her to where they were supposed to go. Vance led them on a walk that took them to a bus stop that easily took them right to the library. However, the street they were on saw a lot of traffic, and Vance was worried that Devika would have another panic attack on the bus. So, he gave her smiles of assurance that everything would be alright. Still...he was dying to hug her, or at least hold her hand, since physical contact was a better sign of comfort.

Devika was trying to keep focused. Breathe, in and hold. Out, slow. Repeat. Don't look anyone too close in the eyes, keep her clothes over her skin. Follow this oddly kind, handsome stranger. She was trying to trust Vance, she really was. But she was far out of practice from dealing with people. Ever since...

Exhaling in a short burst, Devika looked up. "Are we there yet? I... I need to... breathe."

Vance truly felt sorry for the poor girl. Anxiety is a vicious, life-sucking monster that forces the air out of a person within proximity of another person, in his opinion anyway. "Almost. Try to hang in there." Vance said. In a way, this was a good way to warm up being around people. Training, as it were.

As Vance spotted the stop, he showed a smile of relief as he instinctively reached out for Devika. "We're here! Let's go!"
