The precursors are gods lost to time. Even though humanity forgot them, the precursors did not forget about us. They have been watching us throughout the ages, seeing how the world developed without divine input. While unhappy with the current events of the human world, they have not interfered with anything, as they have done for several millennia.
Many gods have been created since the beginning, but not all of them had good intentions. Many of them were banished over time for various reasons, and have remained quiet for some time. They are called the Exiles. Recently though, the Exiles have begun to attack the humans as a means for reclaiming the world that had forgotten about them. The exiles have been noticed by the other precursors, and as much as they would want to, they refuse to go to earth and intervene directly. Instead, they picked people who would fight for them, and changed them to be fit to fight against the Exiles. Each precursor picked out a person who would be their champion, and each champion would be granted abilities that are similar to the gods that picked them.
