"Witches never win. We will forever be hated by human kind. We have never and will never, get a happy ending."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Stay here and finish up those potions for me. I'll be back in a few hours."
"Yes Mother." Mirabella stated with a nod as she watched her mother put on her black cloak, walking with the older woman to the door. She herself knew when her mother said it would be a few hours, that really meant she would be back after night fall. When her mother went on her outings outside of the barrier it was always like that. What her mother was doing while out there in the woods was a mystery to even Mira herself, but knowing her mother, it was probably her reeking some form of havoc on the humans. Sometimes she wondered if her mother lived only to trouble the non-magic wielders, but she never thought too long on it, and her own urge to leave the barrier was easy blocked off by the memories of what happened to her last time she left the barrier. Every time she came even close to leaving it came across her mind, instilling fear into her. Still, she always wondered what it would be like in the outside world...
Her mother turned the knob and was about to step outside of their small cottage when she turned sharply, a stern look on the Witch's face, "And Mira,"
"Yes Mother?" The girl questioned obediently as she could, bringing her mind away from her thoughts of freedom and back to the woman in front of her.
"Do not leave the barrier. Do I make myself clear? Those humans out there are--"
"'Evil and vile. They wouldn't hesitate to slaughter an innocent spell-caster or sell them off to the highest bidder in market.' I know Mother, I know. Now, go on before it gets too late." She commented, having heard the same warning every day for the last twelve years of her life, ever since her father had been killed by humans, and even more so since she had waundered out intot he woods anyway as a child, despite her mother's warnings. It was a moment etched into her mind and always left a knot in her chest. Those human children had seemed so kind to her. They had let her join in and play with them. But the moment they found out she could do magic...they tore her apart and though the physical wounds had healed, the mental ones had left scars.
"Very good. Remember Mirabella, no matter how kind those beasts may seem, they will always hate us. Never trust a human." This warning was one of many, and after her mother had spoken it softly to her, kissing her forehead, the woman went off, cape flowing behind her as she left the home and passed through the barrier just a mere fifteen feet in front of their home, heading off into the darkness of the woods.
"What's out there that keeps her leaving all the time? What is she doing?" Mira whispered quietly to herself a she stared out into the woods a few moments, before slowly turning and walking back inside to begin the work her mother had given her. She was to make some simple potions and though it was a very complicated task, she did this almost every day, and because of this it was something she had come to do with ease and great skill. Humming softly to herself, she began taking things off of the shelves and throwing each things at a time, in a certain order, into the calderon that stood in the middle of her mother's study.
She repeated this with every potion, and by noon she had done all of the potions her mother had told her to, leaving her free for the rest of the day until her mother was to return. Smiling slightly, she moved tot her own room int he cottage and knelt down on the floor, easily finding the right floorboards she needed to grab. She had been doing this for years and so, the hiding spot was one she knew well, yet her mother had never found as of yet. She pried the floorboard up and inside lay at least ten or fifteen books. Mira ran her hands over the old bindings of each leather bound book. Tilting her head to the side she was thoughtful for a moment, before deciding which one she wanted to read for the day, pulling a book entitled Sleeping Beauty out of the spot.
These books were written by two men named the Grimm Brothers, who traveled from kingdom to kingdom, finding stories to write about, which made Mira even more interested in the because that meant many of these stories were true.Taking the book in her delicate hands, she walked outside and rounded a corner when a large creature jumped in front of her, giving a roar that didn't even make her flinch. In fact, if anything, it annoyed the girl, "Grounii, go bother someone else. I'm busy."
Hearing her disinterest in him, she and her mother's pet dragon(whom she had kept as extra protection for the cottage), snorted and made a grumbling sound, slinking off around another corner to go to the other side of the cottage and likely catch mice or tease the birds by chasing them off.
Shaking her head at the beast, she laughed under breath, she walked along, pausing when she was trying to decode where she would read today. There weren't many options in the small space inside the barrier. All of the places she usually read at were getting boring and she really didn't feel the need to read in any of those places. She walked closer tot he barrier looking out into the woods beyond the shimmering wall(which only magic beings themselves could see) and frowned. There looked like there would be many fantastic places to read at out there. But the thought of running into someone, especially humans, left her somewhat fearful of going out there.
By now, the dragon had made his way over to her once more, nuzzling his snout against her neck, making her forget her fears momentarily to laugh and swat at him, "Grounii, stop it! That tickles!" The dragon licked her face before stopping and curling around her slightly, looking at her with big yellow eyes, "What do you think Grounii? About going out there?" She asked, looking up at him, then at woods. The dragon once again made grumbling sounds that sounded like he was trying to talk to her, to which Mira nodded, acting as if she understood him, "It's just outside the barrier.....and what are the chances I would even run into a human?" She paced a hand on the barrier, ripples running over it, "It wouldn't be so bad, right? And I'd be back home before mother found out."
She smiled slightly at this and looked at him, "Alright Grounii, you've convinced me." The dragon snorted, looking at her with a very surprised and 'are you crazy' look as she went to grab one of her mother's cloaks from inside and walked to the barrier. She paused, hesitant for a moment, her heart hammering in her chest. She stood there a moment and then, taking a deep breath, walked through the barrier, blinking as she looked around the woods. She looked back to see the large dragon walk though as well and she grinned at him, "What? Are you coming to? Well, you better change into something else. A dragon isn't exactly a normal thing to see in the woods."
Snorting once more, the dragon bent down and changed forms, turning into a black cat that soon was following her swiftly as she walked through the woods, stepping over fallen trees and roots as they went. Soon, Mira was very happy to find a huge oak tree, one larger than she had ever seen. Finding it would be a perfect spot to read at, she flopped down into the grass under the large oak tree, smiling brightly to herself as she flipped open the book, starting to read aloud to herself, "Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful king and king, of whom were blessed with a daughter. Everyone gathered to see the new princess, including three fairies. These good fairies were to each bestow a gift upon the child. One granted her beauty. Another granted her the sweetest voice one could hear. But, before the last fairy could grant her wish, an evil woman with dark magic...." Even though she had read this story countless times, Mira always paused at this part, a frown forming deeply on her face, "Cast a curse upon the child. On the princess's eighteenth birthday, she would prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die."
The black cat that was Grounii stalked over, laying down beside her to look at the book as well. Mira scratched his head and looked down at him, "That wasn't nice of her to do, was it Gounii?" The cat grumbled again as if to share his thoughts, making her laugh and continue reading, "The evil woman vanished soon after placing this curse and the third fairy granted a wish that would save the child's life if the curse would be fulfilled. She decreed that should the princess prick her finger, she would not die, but fall into a deep sleep." She began flipping through the pages more, trying to skip to the end, "The princess is sent away....she meets the prince in the forest.....falls in love...blah, blah, blah....she gets sent back home to the castle, where she of course pricks her finger." Rolling her eyes she grinned, "Didn't see that coming. Not." Finally coming to the end she started reading again, "The prince sat upon his white steed, sword held high as the evil woman shifted into a mighty dragon." She looked over at Gounii, who shifted momentarily into his dragon form again, and stood up tall and proud hearing this, giving a roar, causing Mira to laugh more shush before rolling onto her back, continuing to read as he changed back into a cat, "The dragon spit flame after flame out at the prince, but the prince was too quick. He lunged forward and...." She paused once again a deep frown coming back to her face, "he killed the witch, putting an end to her dark magic."
Sighing and not having the heart to read the rest, she shut the book and tossed it to the side, looking up to the clouds as she spoke to herself, "Why does the witch always have to die? Why can't just for once, the witch have the happy ending?" She whispered to herself, turning over on her stomach to stare out into the woods, "Once upon a time....there lived a lonely witch. This witch, was not like other witches, for she wanted a life beyond the boundaries that had been placed before her. She wanted to be a good person, yet knew she would never be accepted by humans, and because of this, hid herself away, waiting for the day she might be able to live a life away from the destiny that lays before every other witch. The day she would be accepted...." Sighing again, she moved to stand, "Which will be never. Only humans live happy lives and only prince's and princess's get happily ever afters."
Trying to shrug it off the best she could, she patted the cat's head and shrugged, "I'm going to go back to the cottage and maybe organize some of Mother's spell-books. I'm sure she would want--"
"Meeeeeow."
Turning at the sound of Grounii's meow, she turned around, seeing small black cat's yellow eyes, staring out deeper into the forest. Pausing slightly, she was about to reach out and pick him up, when the animal took off running fro a reason unknown to Mira. But what she did know is she had to get Grounii back and get to the cottage before something bad happened, "Grounii?! Where are you going?!" She yelled after the cat, dashing forward to try and catch up with him, but not doing such a good job at it, "Come back! If you get lost in the woods I'll never be able to find you!" She exclaimed worried, pushing back branches and things as she went, a worried look on her face as she headed deeper into the forest, trying to find her run away shapeshifter.
Destrian followed the procession of noblewomen with his eyes as they exited the hall. As soon as the last girl had gone and the doors were shut, he let out a deep sigh, exhaling the breath he had been holding in. His father, who stood beside him, gave him a disapproving look. Always perfectly poised, King Merek expected the same behavior from his son— even if nobody else was watching. “What was wrong with them this time?” the king asked, his voice tight with thinly veiled exasperation. “They’re all… _lacking_,” Destrian said vaguely. “They’re like puppets, father. All of them. They just say what they think I’ll want to hear.” “That’s because they’re vying for your approval,” the king replied curtly. “But I don’t want to marry someone with no spirit of her own,” Destrian protested. “I can’t love a puppet.” “Love has nothing to do with it,” his father’s voice was icy. He was losing patience. “I’ve told you time and time again. Each of these women comes from an important kingdom, whose alliance would greatly aid our own. Your marriage will seal the bond between the two kingdoms.” The king pinched the bridge of his nose. “It has been almost a year, Destrian. If you do not choose one of the women, I will choose for you.” “Father, please, I—” “Enough,” the king held up his hand. “I will give you until the end of this summer. If you have not made a decision by then, I will do it for you. That is final.” He turned and walked back down the hallway before Destrian could respond. It wasn’t like he could do anything even if he tried. His father’s word was the law. It always had been, and it always would be. He returned to his room in silence. -- That was three days ago. Now, Destrian was out on a hunt with a small party of knights and two servants to carry their equipment. He rode on horseback with a bow and a quiver slung over opposite shoulders. His blue eyes swept over the trees around him as he searched for signs of movement. The sport of a good hunt always managed to brighten his mood, and right now, he definitely needed the uplifting. “Sire,” one of the knights hissed, pointing off to the left. A herd of elk was grazing among the distant trees. Everyone slowed their horses to a stop and drew their bows, but none of them let their arrows fly. In accordance with tradition, they were waiting for Destrian to take the first shot. He pulled an arrow from his quiver and loaded his bow, lifting it to take aim at one of the unsuspecting beasts. There was a soft _twang_ as he released the arrow, followed by a hoarse cry from the elk. The other animals started to scatter and the rest of Destrian’s knights let their own arrows go. There was another faint cry as one of the other knights hit his mark. “Fine work, men,” Destrian said as he climbed down from his horse. “We’ll be eating fresh venison for days.” He and the knights led their horses to the small clearing where they had made their kills. Three elk lay dead in the grass— the last one had an arrow through its head, so it must have died before it had a chance to utter a sound. The men hoisted the bodies onto the backs of three of their horses to carry them back to the castle. As they were about to turn back, Destrian gave the forest one last, long look. The hunt had gone by far too quickly, and he found himself wishing that he had missed his mark so he could stay outside the kingdom walls just a little longer. Unfortunately, the title of ‘prince’ came with many responsibilities. He couldn’t neglect his duties for his own selfish reasons. Then, something caught his eye: a brief flash of movement at the base of a tree. He frowned. Normally all of the animals in the forest would flee at the cry of a dying elk. Any that happened to be nearby should have been long gone by now. Why would one stay behind? But perhaps it wasn’t an animal at all. He had heard the rumors of wild wizards living in the woods. Maybe there was some truth to those stories after all. “Sire?” a knight called to him hesitantly. “We’re ready to leave when you are.” “Hold on a moment,” Destrian said without looking back. “I’m going to check something for a moment.” “Do you want us to come with you?” the knight’s voice was filled with wariness. Of course, he wouldn’t want to leave the prince unguarded. King Merek would have them all beheaded if anything happened to his beloved son. “I’ll be fine on my own,” Destrian said, giving the knight a challenging stare. “I can defend myself if I need to.” “But—” the knight started. “Enough,” Destrian cut him off. He felt a strange sense of déjà vu when he uttered the command. “Wait here. I will be back soon.” When the knight took an uneasy step forward, he continued: “I will call for you if I need assistance. Stay here.” The knight hesitated, and then gave a reluctant bow. The rest followed suit. Destrian nodded at them and ventured deeper into the forest, one hand hovering over the hilt of his sword. He heard a noise off to his left. He swiftly drew his weapon and spun around to see… a small black cat. Destrian blinked in confusion, his face warm with embarrassment at his overreaction. He sheathed his sword and crouched down to look at the animal. It appeared to be somebody’s pet. He could tell that much from the way it didn’t flee from him. The question was: How did it end up so far away from the kingdom? He was surprised it hadn’t gotten itself eaten by a bear or other large predator. “Just where did you come from?” Destrian murmured, holding out a tentative hand to the black cat.
Mirabella felt her heart hammering in her chest with worry for the small black cat that was running between the trees and under roots. Where was he going? And why on earth was he running off like this? He was normally such a behaved animal and she never had any problems like this before from him. Pushing back branches from her way as she went, she frowned, seeming to loose sight of the small cat. She looked about anxiously, terrified that she might now ever find the small shape shifter. What if he couldn't find his way back? What if he got hurt and she couldn't help him? What would happen when she went home and her mother asked where he was? She ran her hands over her face in a frustrated way before she continued pushing forward, heading further into the woods than she was comfortable with. The further she went, the more hesitant her footsteps became and the more fearful she was. Was she getting closer to the human kingdom? She hoped not. She would hate to stumble upon it and something happen to her. She moved forward though, determined to find her friend. Pushing back branch after branch and making her way through the brush, into a rather small clearing, relief swelled in her, a smile coming to face at the sight of the black cat sitting there. Only that relief washed away quickly and instead she froze in her steps, her smile faltering at the sight of a human male kneeling down next to Grounii. This was bad. Very bad. She stood there, for the moment unsure how to react, just looking at hi wide eyed, a slight fear in her eyes at the memories that ran through her mind. Memories of the day her father had been killed by humans that had been passing through the woods. Memories of the human children who had beat her and thrown things at her until her mother had to rescue her. This human was obviously of the higher class from his clothes and the higher class were the worst kinds. They were the more judgmental and would be quick to try something to harm others. Humans were no good. Humans were evil. This one was too and would likely kill her for being a witch. If he found out she was a witch that is. Maybe she could just make this a quick passing? Just say thank him for stopping her cat and go on her way? Yes. She could do that. Yet, it had been so long that she had spoken to anyone besides her mother it took her a few seconds to kickstart her mind again to figure out what to do. She forced herself to seem calmer, despite her fear of this human, managed to take a few steps forward, watching as Grounii, the forever brave animal he was, actually purred, allowing the human to pet him and even rubbed his head against the human's hand, "I-I'm sorry. That's my cat. He's a little bi of a trouble maker and always runs off. Thank you for stopping him for me." She looked to Grounii, kneeling down, "Come on, Grounii. We have to get home." The cat though was stubborn and after walking over to Mira to rub against her, went right back over to the human before she could pick him up, rubbing against the young man, and even hopping up into his lap, "Grounii. I'm sure he doesn't want to hold you all day and we have to get home to cook supper.Now, come here." Still the cat stubbornly meowed and even this time layed down and yawned, completely and obviously purposely ignoring her commands. This made her rake a hand through her hair in a frustrated and nervous manner, eyeing the human for a moment anxiously before she carefully stepped over to him, with the intentions of trying to pick the cat up, but she found herself stopping a little ways from where he knelt, her fear getting the best of her and making her unwilling to move any closer to the human, her body tense, "Ummm....maybe.....if you stand up he might come back to me?" She offered her voice suddenly quiet in hopes of hiding at least some of her fear.
Destrian chuckled as the cat reached out to nuzzle his hand. The little feline was very friendly. He wondered again how it had ended up so lost in the woods. Its owner must have been worried sick. He was about to scoop the cat up to bring it back with him –perhaps he could find its owner somewhere in the kingdom– when he heard a voice. He looked up to see a nervous looking girl standing by the trees. She was keeping her distance, an action he didn’t find very unusual. She looked like a young peasant woman, and the lower class always seemed uncomfortable in his presence. He offered her a reassuring smile in an attempt to ease her worries. He hoped to lessen the peasants’ sense of unease over time. **“I-I’m sorry,”** the girl stammered. Apparently Destrian’s friendly gesture did nothing to lessen her worries. **“That's my cat. He's a little bit of a trouble maker and always runs off. Thank you for stopping him for me.”** Odd. She didn’t shower him with praises or titles like most peasants did when they spoke to him. Her casual manners were amusing. It was a nice break from the constant stream of ‘Your Majesty,’ or ‘My liege,’ or ‘Great Prince,’ or whatever other exaggerated honors the commoners were using these days. The strange girl knelt down, still keeping her distance from him, and began to call gently to her cat. The animal responded immediately, scampering over to nuzzle her hand. Then it turned right back around and hopped onto Destrian’s lap. He laughed and stroked the cat –apparently named Grounii– along its back. The girl seemed to turn a little paler when her pet did this. She inched closer, then seemed to think better of it and stopped a fair distance away, **“Ummm... maybe… if you stand up he might come back to me?”** “Here,” Destrian picked up Grounii and cradled him in his arms. He then stood up and carried the cat back to the girl, holding him out for her to take. At a closer glance, she looked a bit tattered. Somehow, he was reminded of the little girl who stole a loaf of bread from the royal kitchens all those years ago. “How did you end up so far from the kingdom?” Destrian asked concernedly. “I can’t imagine you strayed this far just to search for your missing cat. Is everything alright?”
Mira stood there, a nervous air about her as he stood up, tempted to back away when he moved closer to her, but steadied herself, tensed up, and when he held out her small black cat to her, she carefully and with shaky hands took him, holding Grounii gently in her arms. The small cat meowed happily before squirming to make his way up her arm and sit on her shoulders. At this, she smiled at the cat, letting him nuzzle her face, before she once again turned her wary gaze to the boy at the question of why she was in the woods so far away from the human kingdom, asking her if everything was alright. How was she supposed to respond to that. She couldn't just ell him that she was a witch and hide form human society to keep herself safe. That would surely get her killed. He would probably drag her back and have her hung. Or burned, or whatever else it was that they did to spellcasters. Or, even if they kept her alive, her exsitance in the human kingdom would likely be torturous with lashes to the back and males taking advantage of her. Her mother had told her of all those things happening to their kind and she surely didn't want to go through that herself. So, what could she say to avoid any of that? She looked back to him, her green eyes meeting his as she brushed some of her dark hair from her face, speaking in the best way she could answer, hoping he wouldn't ask too many more questions and she could go before things turned bad, "I...I don't live in the kingdom. I live here in the forest with my mother, in a cottage some ways from her. She...is a very anxious woman, who fears the crime and bad intentions of those within the kingdom." At least that was the truth, and it was said so that maybe it wouldn't be too suspicious. Glancing over her shoulder toward the way they had came, she began taking a few steps back from the young noble man, and when she looked back to him she gave him a nod, "Thank you for finding Grounii, but I think I should be going. My mother will expecting me soon and she has warned me to not speak to strangers. So, farewell." Giving a slight curtsy in good manners, as her father had taught her to do as a way of being polite when he had been alive, she quickly turned, hoping to rush off before the young man could ask her more questions.
Destrian raised a brow at the girl’s curious explanation. It was true that, despite his father’s ceaseless attempts to have them captured and executed, the kingdom wasn’t completely rid of its criminals. Yet at the same time, the kingdom was a much safer place than the surrounding woods. If anything, the girl and her mother were in even more danger out here than they would be behind its secure stone walls. The forest was teeming with rogue bandits who were just waiting for unsuspecting peoples to rob. Surely, her mother must know this. **“Thank you for finding Grounii,”** the girl went on. **“But I think I should be going. My mother will be expecting me soon, and she has warned me to not speak to strangers. So, farewell.”** Strangers? Destrian wanted to laugh at that. She wasn’t just putting on a careless act; this girl really _didn’t_ know who he was. Her mother must have kept her sheltered outside of the kingdom for many, many years if she didn’t recognize the face of its future king. Her blissful ignorance made the situation all the more interesting for Destrian. The girl dipped in a brief curtsey and turned to leave. Destrian’s amusement faded. Was it alright to let her return to her cottage home? The peasant sectors were crowded in the kingdom, but he was confident that he could find their small family a place to live. It would be much safer than the open woods. “Wait,” he said, reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder before she could take a step away. “Show me this cottage of yours. I’d like to see it for myself.” He wanted to verify whether or not it was a secure place to live. The girl and her mother might not live within the walls of the kingdom, but they were still members of its people. As such, Destrian felt that it was his duty to ensure their wellbeing. Still, he carefully avoided the topic of his status. For some reason, he didn’t feel it was prudent to inform her that he was the prince. Not yet, anyways.
At the feel of his hand on her shoulder, Mirabella tensed and spun around to face him, quickly backing at a few steps, holding Grounii closely to her. For a moment, it seemed like she much dash off after that, but she knew that would just make her situation look even worse. But, then again, this young man seemed to be doing a fairly good job at making it even harder for her to stay calm because now he was saying that he wanted her to take him to the cottage where she and her mother lived. Oh, why couldn't she have just kept her mouth shut? Why hadn't she just said thank you to him and went on her way? She was seriously beginning to regret not staying within the safe boundaries of her mother's protective spell. She seemed a bit nervous as the two stood there, her searching for what her answer would be and finally found herself shaking her head and taking a few worried and cautious steps from him, "N-no. My mother wouldn't like me bringing a stranger home." She wasn't exactly sure what this man was up to, but it didn't feel safe. Even if she was just a human living in the woods like he thought her to be, what reasons did he have for 'wanting to see this cottage of hers for himself'? It wasn't making him look good that was for sure. She took a few more steps back, almost stumbling over some roots of a tree as she did and catching herself on the truck of the same tree, feeling her heart pounding at the situation she was in and what it might mean for her and her mother if things continued to go downhill. Why did she feel so intimidated by him, even though she was more powerful with spells up her sleeve? Maybe it was the high class disposition of the young man? Or maybe it was the not knowing what he was up to? Well whatever it was, she didn't like it. Standing up straight after having caught herself on the tree, she nervously moved her gaze back to him, trying to keep as much distance as she could from him in this small clearing, "You have no reason for coming to my home and it would be dangerous of me to allow a man I don't know see where I live."
Destrian groaned inwardly. He really hadn’t thought that last line through. Of course she would be afraid to bring him back to her cottage. It was an unusual request for a strange man to make of a young woman. She had every reason to doubt his intentions. He just threw away any chance he had at offering her assistance. “You misunderstand me,” Destrian held up his hands in a gesture of innocence. He paused, searching for words. How was he supposed to explain the real reason he wanted to see her cottage without giving away his status? “I don’t mean you any harm. I merely wanted to see how you and your mother were getting by without protection or help from the kingdom.” He knit his brow in frustration. The girl had no reason to believe anything he said. He sighed. It appeared his fun with anonymity would have to come to an end. “From the way you address me as a stranger, I have to assume you don’t know who I am,” Destrian crossed his arms and shook his head. “I was hoping I wouldn’t have to explain myself, but I can’t think of any other choice.” He met her frightened gaze evenly. “My name is Prince Destrian Forthwind, first and only son of King Merek Forthwind.” He quickly held up a hand. While she had proven to be different from all other peasants he had come across, the girl might still panic when she realized who she was speaking with. “Please, don’t bother with formalities. I’ve had enough people bow down to me for two lifetimes.” He smiled at his own joke, trying to lighten the mood, but quickly realized that the girl probably didn’t understand what he was talking about. Destrian shifted his weight, “Err… Nevermind. What I’m trying to say is that you have no need to fear me. I only wish to ensure your wellbeing. It is part of my responsibility to you and your mother as people of my father’s kingdom. These woods are known for bandit attacks and I just want to be sure that you are both safe out here by yourselves. Do you think you understand me now?”
Mira kept her eyes cautiously on the young man as he held up his hands, trying to prove his innocence as he spoke to her, explaining that he just wanted to see how she and her mother and been getting along safely without being within the kingdom. Well, the real answer to that was fairly simple. For one, they lived so far out into the woods that not even the bandits dared to go there. And two, with her mother's protection spell, it was absolutely impossible for anyone to get near their home even if they did see it. But, again, she couldn't tell him that part. He continued on with his speaking, and then, he gave news that made her eyes widen, ** “My name is Prince Destrian Forthwind, first and only son of King Merek Forthwind."** So, this young man was none other than the prince of the nearby kingdom? But what was he doing out here? And what were the chances that out of all of the humans in that kingdom she could have met wandering about in the woods, she had to have met the _Prince_. Her mind was flying at this new information, and at the same time, she was conflicted with so many emotions as well. One half of her was frightened beyond belief even more at the news this young man in front of her was the Prince. After all, it was his father that had outlawed all magic and threatened to kill any witch or wizard that might be found out. His father had killed many innocent witches and wizards merely because of what they were and not who they were. It was his father's fault and prejudice that her own father was dead, and she was so sure if he knew this prince might react the same and try to kill her as well. Yet...at the same time, another side of her was smitten. She had read so many books about this sort of thing and had wished for so long that she could be thrown into one of those plots. After all, what young woman wouldn't want to meet a prince and have a fairy tail of her own? Okay, so this maybe wasn't exactly a romance. After all, the prince was just asking to know about her home because she was a 'citizen of his father's kingdom' as he said, but still, that child like side of her was thrilled. Though, she managed to hide this side very well as she spoke to him. "I understand, but my mother and I live far too deep into the woods. Not one bandit has ever come across our home. I can assure you, Your Highn....um...Destrian?" She stopped herself from using the formalities of the prince as he had told her before and continued, "My mother and I are perfectly safe."
The corner of Destrian’s lip tugged upward when the girl used his name so casually. No blown up titles or ridiculously grand compliments came with it. She really was different. Any other peasant would have persisted to keep to tradition for fear of being executed. The girl’s straightforward boldness continued to amuse him. “Fine then,” he replied when she said that she and her mother were safe where they were. “I’ll leave you to your own business. However, if you ever do come across any woodland thieves, I would encourage you to seek help from the knights my father keeps stationed in this area. The nearest post is just beyond that valley.” He gestured at the indicated landmark. “I warn you, the knights can be a bit moody with the common folk. If they give you any trouble, just tell them I referred you. That should be enough to get them to offer their assistance.” He nodded at her, a glint of humor in his eye. “Good day, then. And make sure you keep a close watch on that cat of yours.” With that, he turned and made his way back to the clearing where his hunting party was waiting. “The Prince returns,” one of the knights proclaimed when Destrian came into view. All of the men stood to attention. Destrian paid them no mind. He made his way over to his horse and began to untether its reins from a branch where one of the servants must have tied it. Both of the servants now scrambled to assist him, but he waved them off. He could untie a simple knot without any help. “Your Highness?” one of the other knights ventured. “What did you find?” “Nothing of great importance,” Destrian shrugged. “It was only a girl who lost her cat.” “A girl?” the knight echoed incredulously. “So far out in the woods?” “Do you think she could be a witch?” another knight said in a hushed voice. “Ridiculous,” Destrian laughed. “She is merely a harmless young girl who lives with her mother in a secluded little cottage. Besides, if she was a witch, she would have attempted to kill me while I was alone. The magic-wielders all want my father’s line to end, and she had the perfect opportunity to cut it off. Yet here I am.” “But Sire…” another knight said uncertainly. “Your father wants us to take every precaution against the witches. We’ve all heard the rumors of wild magicians living in the forest. Couldn’t she be—?” “I know these rumors all too well,” Destrian cut in. “But I also know that there is no substance to them. No one has ever seen a witch in these woods. At least, no one can prove they have. All we can go on is the word of money mongers, searching to take home some gold for their reports of magic-users in the forest. I refuse to investigate a peasant girl without a proper reason to do so.” Destrian gave his horse’s reins a tug and began to lead it back to the looming walls of the kingdom. “Let us return then, shall we?” The knights gave up their futile attempts to argue. They gathered their own horses and followed him back in reluctant silence.
Mira listened to the prince as he spoke to her, telling her what she could do if she were to ever run across any woodland thieves and such. It was very kind of him to look out for her like this. Did he do this with all of his people? If so, maybe this prince would be a much better ruler than his father. Maybe through this prince things could change for the Spellcasters. She smiled at him when he spoke to her and she nodded, giving another curtsy, holding Grounii close to her, "Thank you, Destrian. I will be sure to do that." She smiled at him once more and then turned, heading back into the deeper parts of the woods, toward her home. As she walked along, she looked down at Grounii and smiled, giving a shrug, "Well, that was.....interesting, don't you think?" The cat merely meowed and she nodded, "Certainly not the way I expected a human, especially the prince and son of a horrible king, to act, even toward someone as obviously low class as me, with or without knowing about what I really am." She looked over her shoulder as they went along, looking back in the direction they had come from, "It was nice, though." he smiled more and th two slipped through the trees, Mira letting them in through the protection barrier. Immediately the small cat that was Grounii shifted, changing back into the large dragon he liked being so much and rubbed his head against Mira, making her laugh, "Okay, you big lumux, let's get back inside before mother--" **"Before mother does what?"** Wide eyed, Mira looked to see her mother, standing in the yard by one fo the large trees, a furious look on her face as Mira scrambled to think of something to say, "I-I..." Before she could even word anything her mother was upon her, grabbing her arm and dragging her into the cottage, flinging her inside so hard that she hit the floor rather roughly. **"Why did you to obey Mirabella?! What make you think you could just run off into the woods like that?! HUH?!"** "But mother, I--" Her mother turned to her, the fury very obvious in her gaze, "Didn't I tell you not to go out there?!" Mira was silent a moment as she gazed down at the floor before she dared to look up at her mother, "It was so lonely here mother..." "I was not company enough?" Her gaze was cold as she looked down at her daughter and that made Mira feel even worse. Mira looked up now from where she sat on the floor, speaking to her mother, her own gaze begging for her to understand, "I'm not a child anymore mother! I wish to see the world!" **"What world Mira?! The world in these!"** It was then that Mira realized, much to her despair, that her mother had found her old story books left behind by her father. She had kept them hidden in her room, but now her mother had them all out on the table and had picked one up, gripping it angrily in her grasp, **"Get your head out of the clouds child! The world in these books doesn't exist! Yes, princes may be out there in the world, but so are humans! They will never understand us! And if they find out what we are, who _you_ are, they will not hesitate to kill you. Not even any prince you meet out there will want to keep you alive after knowing what you are. He'd rather see you burned at the stake like your father!"** By now, Mira was sobbing and her mother moved to kneel down in front of her, taking her hands, **"Stay with me Mira. Here in the cottage. Never go into those woods again. Do I make myself clear?"** Mira looked up at her mother and swallowed hard before nodding, "Yes Mother." **"Good."** Smiling, her mother kissed her forehead and stood up, pulling Mira to her feet, **"Now, let's fix some supper and forget this whole thing."** ... Yet, Mira couldn't forget it. All night, and even the next morning as she sat out in their yard staring out into the woods, she found herself thinking about those woods and the human Prince she had met there. She had gone out there and met a human, and he hadn't harmed her. In fact, he had been very kind to her. What if her mother was wrong? What if maybe her mother just hadn't met a human in so long that she didn't know humans had changed. Had humans changed? Mira wasn't sure. But how could she know whether they had or not if she didn't see so for herself? Needless to say, after her mother left, Grounii didn't look too happy to see Mira putting on that cloak again and preparing to leave. He even nudged her, trying to make her go back into the house to take it off, but she shook her head, "Grounii. Stop it." Taking the dragon's head in her hands she spoke, "I have to do this Grounii. Please. I just have to go back into those woods." The dragon at this huffed, and backing up, changed into a cat once more, determined to follow Mira out again. She smiled at him and made her way past the barrier and into the woods once more, a huge smile on her face. As she walked along, she found herself passing the time, humming, and even when they got a little further, found herself singing, lost in her own little world. ... [The Call](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgUL3ut4gyQ) "It started out as a feeling Which then grew into a hope Which then turned into a quiet thought Which then turned into a quiet word And then that word grew louder and louder 'Til it was a battle cry I'll come back when you call me No need to say goodbye ~ Just because everything's changing Doesn't mean it's never been this way before All you can do is try to know who your friends are As you head off to the war Pick a star on the dark horizon and follow the light You'll come back when it's over No need to say goodbye You'll come back when it's over No need to say goodbye ~ Now we're back to the beginning It's just a feeling and no one knows yet But just because they can't feel it too Doesn't mean that you have to forget Let your memories grow stronger and stronger 'Til they're before your eyes You'll come back when they call you No need to say goodbye You'll come back when they call you No need to say goodbye"
The trip back to the kingdom was relatively uncomfortable for everyone. The knights had openly argued with their prince twice during the hunt, and no one dared to speak to him again. Even after all the time Destrian had spent trying to convince the men that he wasn’t the same as his father, they still persisted in treating him as such, expecting him to hold a grudge when they spoke out of turn. But maybe they weren’t entirely wrong. He _had_ been a bit short tempered with them lately, although he now regretted it. Destrian wanted to apologize to the knights, but he knew they would just brush him off. They would make up excuses about how he had no reason to feel guilty, how everything was their fault, and not his. He would just be wasting his breath if he tried. Still, he wondered why he was so moody these past few days. Perhaps it was the stress. His father’s constant pressure to seal an alliance through his marriage had been rubbing Destrian’s nerves raw. And now there was a deadline. He closed his eyes, pushing the thought aside. He didn’t want to think about that now. The rest of the journey was made in dragging silence until the party reached the inner walls of the kingdom. Some of the knights unloaded the elk carcasses to be taken to the royal kitchens where they would be turned into venison, and others led the horses back to the stables. Destrian parted ways with them and returned to the castle to report to his father. The walk back was more peaceful. There were few people on the streets in the inner city because it was home to only the wealthiest citizens of the kingdom. While Destrian enjoyed his occasional visits to the peasant sectors, he liked how freely he could travel in the more secluded towns of nobility. He didn’t have to wear a cloak or worry about frightening anyone here with his presence. The nobles were close enough in status to the royal family that they didn’t trip over themselves trying to impress him. Well… not unless they had something to gain from it, that is. A small group of young noble women noticed Destrian walking by and smiled at him flirtatiously. Ah yes, this was the one downside of the wealthy sectors. Word had gotten out that the king was preparing to arrange his son’s marriage, and now it seemed like all the rich girls in the kingdom were battling for a chance to become a princess. Unfortunately for them, King Merek wished for Destrian to marry a woman from another kingdom for political reasons, but that didn’t stop the noble women from trying. _They’re all fake,_ Destrian thought, turning away from the girls in disinterest. They seemed to misread his gesture as bashfulness, and this sent them into a fit of giggling. He quickened his pace to hurry past them. He had had quite enough of the selfishness of young noble women who vied for his attention just to achieve a higher status. He refused to be manipulated in such a way. Luckily, the rest of his walk went by uninterrupted. He entered the castle and headed straight to his father’s room so he could complete his report and be done with it. At that moment, he wanted nothing more than to spend time alone and get his thoughts in order. Destrian found the king reclining in a cushioned chair on his balcony, looking out over the kingdom. He was wearing plain cotton clothes, which was a little strange to see. Normally, King Merek wore only finely tailored silks, leathers, and furs. Destrian guessed his father was also under stress for him to dress so casually. He cleared his throat to get the king’s attention. “You’ve returned,” King Merek turned to him unceremoniously. “Do you have any news?” “Nothing of significance, Father,” Destrian replied stiffly. “The knights and I managed to bring back three fully grown elk. Everything seemed peaceful in the woods. We didn’t even see any bandits.” He purposefully left out the detail about the reclusive peasant girl. Knowing his father, he would overreact and send an armed party to investigate. He was always worried about magic-using enemies, so he might even give the knights permission to kill the girl. Destrian didn’t want her blood on his hands. “Good, good,” the king turned back to his view of the kingdom. “I only have one other bit of information for you, Destrian.” “Yes, Father?” Destrian felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. Any news from his father lately had been nothing but burdensome. He dreaded what might come next. “I have arranged a ball in three days’ time,” the king continued. “All of the young princesses and noble women I’ve arranged for you to meet so far have been invited, along with three others.” He peered over his shoulder at Destrian. “I thought that this would make your decision easier. Now you can see all of them at once and choose who you would prefer to marry.” Destrian hesitated for a moment before he spoke again, “I understand, but, Father, I still—” “Princess Faerydae had a lovely face, don’t you agree?” King Merek cut him off as though he had never uttered a word. “And her hips were wide, perfect for bearing children. You are going to want descendants to continue our line, so she would make a fine bride. I hope you will consider her.” “She was also the vainest of the lot,” Destrian muttered under his breath. “What was that?” the king raised a brow at him. “Nothing, Father,” Destrian said quickly, shifting uncomfortably. “I will consider her.” “Good. I would also like you to take another hunting party out tomorrow. We will need more food for the guests at ball.” “Yes, Father.” “That is all. You may go now.” Destrian bowed his head and turned away, glad to leave the king behind. He returned to his own room and collapsed on his bed, letting out an exasperated groan. Three days until he had to face those petty rich girls again. Even worse, his father expected him to make some sort of decision after the ball. Perhaps he could get away with simply narrowing down his options rather than choosing a bride right away. That would at least buy him some more time, but he still had to pick one of them eventually. The thought turned his stomach. Yes, they were all outwardly beautiful women, but they were vile and manipulative on the inside. Destrian got up and retrieved his lute. He settled down in a chair and plucked at the strings, humming a simple melody. Music always calmed his nerves. He closed his eyes and lost himself in the relaxing strum of his instrument, letting all of his troubles be forgotten. -- The following day, Destrian led a fresh hunting party out into the woods. He had had good luck on the last trip, so he brought them to the same area as before. Also like before, the knights managed to take down three elk –Destrian’s first shot had missed this time, a testament to his distracted thoughts. They collected the carcasses and bound them to the horses to be carried back to the kingdom. This trip had taken longer, and it was nearly high noon by the time they finished hunting, so instead of traveling directly back, they decided to stop and eat in a nearby clearing. Their accompanying servants brought out bundles of previously prepared food and distributed them among Destrian and the knights. There were none leftover, so the servants foraged for berries to satiate their hunger. Destrian watched them pityingly. He would have offered to give them his food, but they would never accept it. Instead, he finished his lunch quickly and proposed that he would help the servants gather food for themselves. Of course, they tried to decline his offer, but Destrian wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. “I can’t have my people go hungry when I myself am full-fed,” he retorted. “What kind of prince would that make me?” That was enough to silence the servants’ protests. Destrian headed out into the woods, leaving the knights to stare after him in confusion. He didn’t care. He just wanted to do _something_ to make the servants’ lives easier. Besides, he wanted to take every opportunity to spend time alone lately, and this was a perfect way to do so. He wandered among the shrubbery, looking for bushes that bore edible fruits. It was then that he heard the voice. Destrian tilted his head slightly. It sounded like the high, lilting tone of a woman, but what would a woman be doing so far out in the woods? He suddenly remembered the peasant girl from the day before and smiled to himself. How ironic would it be if they ran into each other twice in two days? He followed the sound until he found its owner. Much to his surprise, it _was_ the girl from before. She was singing a song he had never heard before, her voice carrying the notes sweetly. She did have a marvelous voice. He stopped behind a tree to catch the end of her song. **_You'll come back when they call you_** **_No need to say goodbye_** “Beautiful,” Destrian stepped out from behind the tree when the girl finished singing, clapping his hands together as though he were her audience. “I hope you don’t mind. I heard you from a distance and I just had to know who was singing so wonderfully. As fate would have it, it seems we meet again.”
Mira loved to sing. She loved any kind of music really, but using her voice was something she loved the best. She considered her voice a unique instrument. An instrument everyone had but each one was different. No one's voice was like hers and her voice was not like theirs. Everyone's voice was their own special sound. It was something she prided herself in and it made her sing rather proudly, listening to the notes echo through the trees as she moved along, and when the song was over, she smiled to herself, listening to the last remnants of her song hanging in the air. But that wasn't the only thing she heard. A sound came to her ears, scaring her and making her jump, her green eyes wide as she turn to look upon no other than the prince. “Beautiful,” The young man stepped out from behind the tree, clapping his hands together, seeming very interested in the song she had just sung. “I hope you don’t mind. I heard you from a distance and I just had to know who was singing so wonderfully. As fate would have it, it seems we meet again.” He thought her singing was beautiful? He had to know who had been singing it? Why did that make her have butterflies in her stomach? But then again, should she have been surprised about feeling like this when being around a prince? She had been dreaming her whole life about princes and here she had met one twice in such a short amount of time. Still, even with the excitement in her from seeing him again, there was also that same nervousness she had felt yesterday when this had happen because, while he was a rather handsome prince, he was still a human and she was still a witch. She nervousness took a few steps back, though of course, the brave shapeshifter that Grounii was hopped off of her shoulder, meowed and trotted right over to the prince, purring and rubbing up against him like he had the day before. Why was he, a shapeshifter trained to attack humans, so fond of this prince? That was another mystery for Mira to find out she supposed. Looking up to meet his eyes again, she took a slightly shaky breath and took a few steps forward to stand where she had been before taking her nervous steps back, trying to gain her courage in speaking with this prince, “It….seems we have met again. And…what are you doing out here in the woods again, Your Highness? Oh, I….um…mean Destrian?”
The girl startled when Destrian approached her. Her cat was much more eager to greet him. It jumped down from her shoulder and nuzzled his leg affectionately. He laughed and knelt down to pet the animal. Its fondness of him was amusing. If only the aristocrats could be so innocent, rather than always having ulterior motives when they tried to win him over. Wouldn’t that be something? “It… seems we have met again,” the girl spoke up. She sounded nervous. “And… what are you doing out here in the woods again, Your Highness? Oh, I… um… mean Destrian?” “My men and I had good luck in this area when we hunted yesterday,” Destrian replied as he picked up the girl’s cat and stood up, cradling it in his arms. “I thought it might be worth our time to try again. With the ball coming up, we need as much venison as we can get…” He paused and tilted his head slightly. “Oh, but you don’t know about that.” Part of Destrian felt a sense of relief. The fact that this girl was so set apart from the gossip about him in the kingdom was nice. Still, he decided he ought to tell her about the ball since he had already brought it up. No point in being vague. “My father is throwing a ball in two days,” Destrian said, stepping over to return the cat to its owner. “He’s trying to… improve relations with the neighboring kingdoms, so members of the other royal families have all been invited. I think he’s making this into a bigger deal than it needs to be, but my father has always been a bit eccentric when it comes to foreign relations. He loves to impress the neighbors.” He laughed again and then paused as another thought came to him. “You know, we could use a talented singer such as yourself. The King already has a small band of musicians, but I believe he has yet to choose a vocalist. You could have a chance to see the palace.” Destrian’s voice took on a luring tone. “Of course, we would pay you handsomely for your services, and there will be plenty of guards. I can assure you that you will be perfectly safe. Your mother would be fine with that, wouldn’t she?”
So, there was to be a ball in two days time. When Mirabella thought of balls, she imagined the pictures from her storybooks. Large rooms. Beautiful decorations. A large feast set out for the guests. People dancing happily with one another. And in some stories, the prince finding his princess. All of that sounded so magical and unreal. And why wouldn't it to her? She was peasant, and not only that, a witch. She would never be able to set foot in such a party unless it was for them to burn her at the stake for their entertainment. Still, it was nice to think about, and to hear about. Nice to dream about too. Those things were really all she could do and would be the closest she would ever get to the high class event. Or at least, she thought that might be the closest she would get to such an event, before the prince himself asked her if she would be interested in singing at the ball for them. She had to admit, she was a bit taken aback by the offer. The prince wanted her, a young woman dressed in tattered clothing and of low class status, to come to the ball and sing? It was a little shocking for her and she wasn't sure how to respond at first. She stood there in silence, taking her cat from his arms as he held Grounii out to her, trying to think of what to say. In ways, it sounded amazing. She would get to see the palace again. How different was it? She remembered it vaguely from the very few times she had visited there with her father when he was alive. She was sure it was possibly even more grand. And the ball, oh how she wanted to see what it was like. She had never seen one in person. The money really meant nothing to her, but the safety of the guards was something that made her a little more comfortable in trying to make her decisions, and yet, also a little more wary as guards could easily assault commons like herself with being reprimanded, couldn't they? Biting the bottom of her lip in thought, she looked to him, racking her brain with what would be the right decision here, "I....I think..." She couldn't even believe she was thinking about agreeing to this, "I'd love to sing at the ball. But, I don't have anything to wear and I'm sure your father wouldn't want someone like me at a ball around so many people of royalty..."
“I’d love to sing at the ball,” the girl said hesitantly. “But, I don't have anything to wear and I’m sure your father wouldn’t want someone like me at a ball around so many people of royalty—” “Oh, don’t worry about that,” Destrian stopped her, holding up his hands. “I’m sure we could find you a suitable dress, and my father won’t mind your status so long as you can prove to him your talent, and I have no doubt you can manage that.” The statement wasn’t entirely true. Yes, Destrian could find the girl the proper attire if she took the position, but his father would never let a lowly peasant into his palace when there were foreign nobles around to impress. No matter. Destrian could easily make up a middle-class background for her so the king would let her in. It wouldn’t be that far-fetched. He would only alter her status as much as he needed to get her the position, not enough to raise suspicion. In a way, sneaking the girl into the ball was Destrian’s own form of passive revenge on his father. He would be disobeying King Merek’s laws by letting a peasant enter a royal event, but his father would never even realize what he had done. It was the safest rebellion Destrian could think of. And besides, he wanted to hear her sing again. She really did have a lovely voice. Talent such as hers should be shared with others, not hidden away in the secrecy of the woods. “Please, come with me,” Destrian gestured in the direction he had come from. “I can bring you back to the palace with the knights. They’re probably waiting for me to return, anyhow. It’s not a far trip, and you can even ride on one of the horses, if you’d prefer.” He paused. “You know, you’ve never even told me your name. What is it, if you don’t mind my asking?”
“Oh, don’t worry about that,” The prince spoke at her mention of not having the right clothes for such an event, as well as not sure if his father would even allow her into the ball, “I’m sure we could find you a suitable dress, and my father won’t mind your status so long as you can prove to him your talent, and I have no doubt you can manage that.” She bit her lip when he said this, hoping he was right. ye, she loved to sing, but had never really sang for anyone before. It was a nervous thought and for a moment she considered really turning him down. But, the thought of getting to see more about humans safely led her to keep her refusal from being spoken. She looked up a little surprised when the prince told her to follow him at first. She hadn't been expecting to go o the palace right a that moment, but then again, she guessed she should have been expecting that. After all, the ball was in just a couple of days ad surely they wanted to have everything planned as son as possible. To plan the music though, his father would have to hear her before hand. So, when they began walking, she had only take a few steps when he stopped to ask her another question. A slight smile came to her face when he asked for her name and she looked to the ground a moment shyly before speaking, "My name is Mirabella." She began following after him again, Grounii walking calmly on the ground beside them, sometimes running up to walk ahead of them and other times to walk either beside herself or beside the prince. "Destrian?" Mira spoke after a while, her voice quiet as usual, her gaze flickering around the forest in curiosity, as she hadn't been so far into the thick of forest from her home since her father was alive, "Why even consider someone like me to perform at such a important event? After all, I am of the low class. And I always assumed....well....that royalty couldn't stand to be in the presence of people like me."
“Mirabella?” Destrian echoed. “That is a fitting name.” He led her through the woods, passing the time by watching her cat scamper through the underbrush that surrounded them. It couldn’t seem to decide where it wanted to walk beside them. Sometimes it would romp along beside Mirabella, and sometimes it would cross over to his side. Occasionally, it even went ahead of them, as if it was the one guiding the humans to their destination. Its fickleness was entertaining. “Destrian?” Mirabella spoke up. “Why even consider someone like me to perform at such an important event? After all, I am of the low class. And I always assumed... well... that royalty couldn’t stand to be in the presence of people like me.” “There will always be narrow-minded people no matter where you go,” Destrian replied with a shrug. “Why let them dictate what you can and cannot do? So long as you can provide everyone with an exceptional performance, your status does not matter.” He wavered. “Although… you might want to avoid the topic of your origins altogether, if possible. It would be unfortunate if any of the guests caused a scene over you.” He winked at her. “I hope you don’t mind keeping this our little secret. Ah, here we are.” He waved a hand towards the small party of knights in the clearing, who all stood up when their prince came into view. They seemed visibly uncomfortable when they saw Mirabella accompanying him. Destrian wondered if the other knights had spread word about his encounter with her yesterday. It would explain the suspicious stares of the current knights in his hunting party. Destrian spoke up before they had a chance to question the peasant girl’s presence, “Men, this is Mirabella. She will be accompanying us back to the kingdom. She has business with the King.” He met their eyes, as if daring them to challenge his claim. Fortunately, no one did. “Shall we leave immediately, Sire?” one of the knights asked. “Of course,” Destrian said. “My horse is ready, I expect? I will have the girl ride him back to the palace.” “But, Prince,” the knight protested. “There is no need. Any one of us would be glad to give up our mount in your stead. You don’t need to walk.” “Don’t trouble yourselves,” Destrian insisted. “I could do with the exercise. I’ve gotten a bit lax in my regular routines lately. Besides, the kingdom isn’t far from here.” “As you wish, Sire,” the knight wisely gave up trying to convince him. “Follow me, miss.” He gestured for Mirabella to join him at the horse’s flank, where he would help her mount the animal so they could be on their way.
It was nerve wrecking enough to be around the Prince, but even more so she was very nervous to be around the knights that had accompanied him. The prince was well behaved and didn't seem like he could ever harness any ill intentions. But the knights with their suspicious gazes and untrusting eyes seemed as though if the prince weren't there they might have given her a very hard time. Maybe they would have even accused her of something. Little did they know they would have been right if thy had gone to access her, but that was beside the point. If she hadn't been a witch and just happened to be living in the woods they would have accused her anyway. That was the way humans were. They were suspicious of anyone and anything and didn't care if they got someone hurt in doing so.
She stayed cautiously behind the prince as he approached the group of knights, her nervous gaze moving from person to person as she clutched her cat close to her chest. The prince spoke, introducing her before any of them could ask why she was there and she was grateful for that. Even more so when none of them said anything against her coming along with them to castle in order to see the king. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad as she thought? If no one really questioned the prince and she didn't have to speak to anyone much then maybe she could really pass for just a peasant girl who happened to have a talent in singing.
Approaching the prince's horse, looking up curiously at the large animal. She hadn't seen a horse up close in years and this one seemed very tamed. Smiling softly at the horse, she gently went to pet it a moment, scratching under it's chin, "Hello there." She said sweetly before allowing the knight to help her onto the horse. It took her a moment to get adjusted, unused to riding such a creature. She shifted her weight and held slightly onto the saddle, Grounii sitting just in front of her. Her first thought had been to hold the cat in her arms that way it wouldn't bother the horse, but the horse didn't seem to mind at all the small creature on its back. Grounii even moved to sit on the to of its head and still the horse stayed calm and didn't mind at all.
This made Mira smile slightly and she looked down at the prince who walked beside the horse as they went along, "Your horse is very calm. You must have trained him very well." She stated in attempt to start a conversation for the ride back. She hated that the prince was having to walk. She honestly wouldn't have minded walking herself, but from the way he had been so persistent with the knights, she had a feeling she wouldn't have had much luck either.
He was right that the kingdom hadn't been far though. Soon the walls and the castle came into sight and Mira took in it all. it had been years since she had seen the castle and it seemed surprisingly much like it had all those years ago. Still, that didn't stop her from marveling slightly in how grand it was and taking in its beautiful scenery. Soon it was time to dismount their horses and Mira turned slightly, having full intentions for getting off of the animal on her own, but found that she was, much to her surprise, afraid of the small height she was up on the tall beast. She laughed nervously and moved her gaze to the prince, "This...is a little higher than I thought. it must have take a lot of practice for you all to get on and off of horses so easily."
As the knights climbed onto their mounts, Destrian took up a position next to his own horse where Mirabella was perched. Once everyone was settled, one of the knights turned around to face him and he nodded. The man hesitated for a moment, likely considering whether or not he should offer the prince his own horse again, and then reluctantly turned away, signaling for the group to start moving. Destrian just rolled his eyes as he walked alongside Mirabella. The knights were too traditionalistic. A little change in the routine never hurt anyone. Besides, he rather enjoyed walking. It made him feel like he was doing something for himself, rather than just playing the part of a royal puppet.
“Your horse is very calm,” Mirabella’s voice drew him from his musings. “You must have trained him very well.”
“He is, isn’t he?” Destrian said, patting the animal’s neck. “However, I can’t take all the credit for that. I was only ten years old when Fendrel was given to me as a colt, so, since I was too young to do it myself, my father was the one who trained him.”
Soon, the kingdom walls came into view above the tree line. Destrian glanced at Mirabella and smiled at her awed expression. If this was how she reacted to seeing the outside of the kingdom, he couldn’t wait to show her the interior, especially the palace. He just hoped his father wouldn’t find out what she was and turn her away. The king was a traditionalist just as much as the knights in his army. He would not stand to allow a peasant girl be admitted into a royal event.
The group passed through the main gates and headed for the stables to return their horses. The knights dismounted easily and began unbridling their animals. Mirabella seemed to have a bit more trouble. At first, it looked like she was going to climb down on her own, but then she stopped and looked down at the prince, “This... is a little higher than I thought. It must have taken a lot of practice for you all to get on and off of horses so easily.”
“Well, that and we’ve grown up with horses throughout our entire lives,” Destrian smiled and shrugged. “Here, let me help you.” He offered Mirabella a hand to get down.
“Sire, please,” one of the knights walked up, glancing at Mirabella. “You do not have to offer your assistance to a peasant. Let me do it.”
“Oh, damn the traditions,” Destrian said sternly. “Peasants are people, too; just as much as any noble. I will not treat them less than that simply because they hold a lower status.”
The knight hesitated, “Your father—”
“Is an honorable man,” Destrian interrupted. “But I do not hold all of the same beliefs as he does. You should know this by now.” He turned back to Mirabella and helped her down from the horse, and then looked back at the knight. “Take the horses back to their stalls and tell my father I would like to speak with him shortly. I have some minor business to take care of first.” Of course, he couldn’t bring the peasant girl to the king as she was now. She wouldn’t even pass for a member of the middleclass. If he was going to get her into the ball, he would have to make her look a bit more presentable.
Destrian turned to Mirabella as the knights began to walk away, “Come along. We’re going to the market.”
