You came out through the Thorns, blinking in the new light. You bled in a hundred different places, where the Thorns had torn at your skin, at your soul. Do you hear the hunting horns behind you?

You found your way towards the lights, hurrying, unsure if you were being pursued. A street light, tall steel, reassuring after your time in the... It hurts to think of. Behind you, you no longer see the Thorns, the Hedge, just a stretch of paved road, a residential area after dark. It's an area you know, more or less. You get your bearings, head towards familiar terrain.

You are home. Or rather, you were already home. You watch in the window as another you eats dinner with your family - but it's not really you, but a construct your Keeper left behind when It took you. When it looks up and sees you, makes eye contact, you catch a glimpse of the soulless thing underneath the glamor. It's not pretty.

And you see how it sees you, reflected in its eyes. The mask falls away, the skin now different in tone and texture, your features twisted. Are you any better?

Rule of Iron is a modern fantasy game set in the city of Leeds, northern England, in the modern day. Under the surface of the city live the changelings, people who escaped the captivity of the Fae. They have been changed, body and soul, by their time in the magical realm and now can command the power of glamor, much like the Fae could. They call their underworld society the Freehold of Loidis. The Freehold is governed by the four seasonal courts, which rotate rule. In the season of spring, the Spring Court rule and so on.

You are recent escapees from Arcadia. You broke free of your Fae keepers, or perhaps you were released, and wandered through the Hedge, the borderlands between Arcadia and reality. You came out in or around Leeds and found yourself unable to reintegrate into human society. But thankfully you have found a merciful patron, an established changeling in one of the courts willing to give you somewhere to rest your head while you get yourself set up with new identities - for a price. It's a price you've agreed to. And remember, to a changeling, your word is your bond...

Name: In her life before her Keeper she was Keilan Liles. Upon being Taken her name was changed for her: Aislinn Eldrel

Gender: Female

Age Taken: 14

Age Escaped: 28

Seeming: Darkling

Kith: Nightsinger

Blessing: Haunting Nocturne

Appearance (Glamor): Her street clothes typically consist of dark tones and light, airy materials. She is often in long skirts or skinny 'jeans' and almost-cosplay worthy medieval or victorian tops. She also almost always has on soft, black leather boots that lace up to the knee. These are what she managed to steal before her escape. Her eyes in this form appear to be a bright, but dark blood-crimson and she is almost too-pale to be real, it seems.

Appearance (No Glamor): This particular Nightsinger has taken on the typical Celtic image of the lovely, yet frightening Banshee. She appears as though she were crying blood and still bears the wounds of her treatment from within Arcadia.

Court: Winter

Personality: Aislinn is quiet and keeps mostly to herself, though as ever music is her singular, shameless love and form of self expression. She is often underestimated as simply antisocial or shy, but in fact she is cunning and calculation- almost always persistent in her scheming and plotting to meet her own ends or the ends given to her by the Winter Court. Her loyalties are scarce outside of her chosen court, but she is fiercely loyal to those she allows close enough to count friends... Or would be, if she had any.

Clarity/Wyrd: 5/7

Glamor: 7

Contracts and Clauses: The Contracts of Darkness:
  • Creeping Dread - If a target attempts to enter the changeling's dwelling, the changeling can increase their fear once they step inside.

  • Night's Subtle Distractions - When used outdoors at night, the changeling can use the darkness to cover their own movements.

  • Balm of Unwakeable Slumber - If a target is asleep in their own bed, the changeling can make it difficult, if not impossible, to raise them from their sleep.

  • Boon of the Scuttling Spider - During the night, a changeling can run up any stone or wood surface as a spider would.

  • Touch of the Paralyzing Shudder - If a target is alone and afraid of the changeling, they may cause spasms of terror in the target that hinders their movement.

  • The Contracts of Shade and Spirit
  • Waking the Dead - A changeling may offer their blood to a shade in exchange to have any question answered.

  • Opening the Black Gate - A changeling, with the correct ritual, may open a gate to the Underworld.

  • Backstory: Before being Taken, Aislinn was a rough, all but orphaned teen from the streets of Dublin. She fought, stole and did anything else necessary for her survival. She did not, however, turn to the drugs she often sold as her own so-called mother had. One of her other, less illegal, activities to earn her living included street performances in which she would sit with her guitar and play and sing four hours. It was one such night, as she was wrapping up her playing and counting the day's money that a shadow overtook her and she blacked out ((no pun intended)) only to awaken in a world far from her own and dressed in rags with her guitar snapped at the neck by her side.
The creature that had taken her was dark, terrible, and hauntingly beautiful. In the first few years of her capture, she was drawn in to a Stokholm Syndrome like state. Punishments were severe when she was seen or heard when she wasn't supposed to or if her tasks weren't accomplished to her new mistress' liking, however she was tenderly nursed back to health after each, horrific and bloodying torture. Her voice and her ability to drift into the shadows and stay out of sight were her saving graces on most occasions.
She was close to her breaking point when a literal bird came to her rescue. Aislinn assumed the small, colorful creature was a shape-shifting fae or changling of sorts, though he never gave a name (she was so very sure it was a he). His kind words brought her back from the brink of her sanity's breaking point. Of course, kind was a word she used loosely on the logical monologue he fed to her at first. She had lost count of the years, days blurring together, long ago. She hardly even noticed the changes being made to her, the scars that covered her new form, still seeming fresh with blood. That colorful, feathered creature that sat in her hand brought her into the present with more clarity than she had felt in ages quite suddenly and that was the point at which she decided it was time to escape.
Using her own abilities, contracted through the surprisingly willing aid of her master while she had still been an obedient puppet, she made about her usual routine the next day. When her song, once again, lulled the fae to her slumber, Aislinn's plan turned full effect. Slipping in to her own room, she snatched up the back she had secretly packed away some of her clothing in to and began to make her way out past the Fae's defenses and guards. It was only a few short days before she found herself in the Hedge, appearing as a great expanse of Moor. Time in the Hedge seemed to twist in her mind before she finally forged her own, rather small and quickly vanishing, path back in to the world of Iron.
When she found herself in Leeds, England and discovered that fourteen and a half years had past she was shocked. Following rumors of other Changlings, never bothering to even dream of going back to the harsh back alleys she had scraped survival from in Dublin, she found herself in the midst of a Winter Court gathering. Since then she has worked and lived among them, firmly agreeing with their stand on the Fae and changelings. However, one day, she wishes to find the male that appeared to her as a small bird in her most desolate hour and thank him.

    Name: Lilith D'ardor Averice Beauchamp

    Gender: Female

    Age Taken: 2

    Age Escaped: Apparently 17

    Seeming: Fairest

    Kith: Companion

Blessing: A Friend In Need. 'Spend glamour to add +1 to rolls made by any character acting in the Changeling's defense or best interests.'

    Appearance (Glamor):
Standing several inches below five feet tall, her diminutive size is disarming to say the least. With long, white blonde hair and a complexion as smooth and pale as porcelain, the vibrance of her sea blue eyes is an almost startling contrast. Utterly petite, her small size lends her a doll-like countenance, fragile and delicate. Her features are equally delicate, as if painstaking painted on, from her wide, doe-like blue eyes to the pert button of her nose and the sensuous bow of her lips.

White silk ribbons are tied into her hair, gathering the pale curls into an intricate, upswept style that emphasizes the youthful fullness of her cheeks. Her small frame is draped in white as well; an angora sweater made of the softest white rabbit fur clings to her torso, and a short white skirt with an elegant white lace overlay falls several inches above the knee, exposing shapely legs seemingly untouched by summer's sun. On her feet are a pair of white ankle boots with tassled fringe and kitten heels that add a melodic click to her footfalls. Her jewelry, from the chandelier drop earrings to the ring on her left middle finger is made from gleaming white crystal, and a crystal crucifix is suspended from a silver chain at her throat.

    Appearance (No Glamour):
Standing at barely three feet tall, this girl resembles nothing quite so much as a living porcelain doll. With long, curled white silk ribbons for hair and a complexion as cold and smooth as the finest porcelain, it is the luminous glow of her sapphire eyes that really draws the attention. Utterly petite, her small size adds to her doll-like countenance, fragile and delicate. Her features are equally delicate, as if painstaking painted on, from the pert button of her nose and the sensuous bow of her lips, though her eyes seem to be made from nothing less than actual sapphires.

Luminous white silk ribbons replace her hair, gathered into an impossibly intricate style that frames her delicate face. Her small frame is draped in white as well; a white silk gown with sheer sleeves and a deeply plunging back, the train fluttering behind her as if dancing on a breeze of its own. Her jewelry, from the chandelier drop earrings to the ring on her left middle finger is made from gleaming white crystal, and crystal crucifix is suspended from a silver chain at her throat.

    Court: Winter

Personality: Thoughtful and slow to speak, there is a sense of wonder in her gaze, as if she is taking delight in everything she sees for the very first time. An aura of helplessness surrounds her personally, though she is quick to offer what assistance she can to anyone else that may be in need, even if that assistance is to her detriment. Far from a leader, she prefers to remain in the background, a companion ready to offer what solace she can.

    Clarity/Wyrd: 4 Clarity, 8 Wyrd

    Glamour: 8

    Contracts & Clauses:

    Contract: Hearth
Clause - Fickle Fate: She causes a minor curse on an individual.
Clause - Favored Fate: She slightly betters the fortunes of a target.
Clause - Beneficent Fate: She guarantees success for her target.

    Contract: Eternal Winter
Clause - Jack's Breath: If she hears a shiver, she may lower the temperature in the area.
Clause - Touch of Winter: Once she writes something she hates in a liquid, she can freeze liquids with a touch.
Clause - Riding the Devil's Jawbone: If a bell rings near her, she can surround herself with a frozen aura that disables her enemies.

    Contract: Fleeting Winter
Clause - The Dragon Knows: Looking into a target's eyes, she will know the cause of their sorrow.
Clause - Slipknot Dreams: Once a target has accepted a gift from her, she can let them forget about the cause of their sadness.

    Backstory:
Lilith remembers very little of her time on this side of the Hedge, having been abducted when she was but a toddler. What she does remember is a sense of warmth and caring; a mother's face obscured by time and memory lost.

Upon being taken, she was given into the care of what can only be described as horrifically beautiful living dolls. Some were barely older than she, and some were dolls withered with age but still ethereal in their beauty; cracked porcelain and yellowed white satin draped in mystery. She was taught to sit still for hours on end, sometimes even days. Dressed up in the finest clothes, she would pose for what seemed like eternity, expressions never her own. Forced smiles, affected pouts, and feigned yearning made her a master at hiding her own emotions, or perhaps a slave to the emotional whims of others - the line blurs.

After many, many years of this training, the True Fae that had taken her, a cold but distant prince of some corner of Arcadia, returned to whisk her away from her tutors; none of whom she ever saw again. They traveled, she the silent companion, he the silent Master. Servants would change her clothes, do her hair, basically keeping her as perfect and pretty as he would wish it, though to what end she knew not. Her life at this point had become an un-life, she was an object for viewing and no longer a child with emotions of her own, no longer a person with opinions to be expressed.

Despite her inability to express herself, or perhaps because of it, her mind grew sharp with the skills of observation one picks up by being unable to participate in the world. When they would visit others, be it cottage or castle, she would be set down somewhere nearby, an observer. She learned things this way. She learned languages, she learned names, she learned secrets. She learned songs, she learned poems - such epic poetry, recounted time and time again in her long moments of mental solitude.

And so her un-life continued, until one day, quite out of the blue, she was addressed directly. It was midday, the middle of winter and she was seated on a plush cushion in a crystal carriage with none but her Master nearby, so when he spoke, it could be to no one but her. He asked, of all things, her opinion of the weather. It was an icy winter day, but the sun was shining and all the world was wreathed in frost, and she told him so, her voice still carrying the melodic lilt of childhood, unused all these years. Over time, he asked her more questions, and she gave more answers. She learned to ask him questions, and of these she remembers every answer he ever gave. She remained a doll, pampered and precious, but she became a companion in time, invited to speak, to recite poetry on their visits.

At times, then, she would be loaned as a gift. Never so long as to give her cause to think He would not return for her, but long enough for her to be fawned over at a party, or petted for good luck before some election or event. Then came one eve, on some such extended borrowing, when the Fae to whom she'd been privileged sought liberties no one had ever suggested to Lilith before. Afraid, she called out for her Master, and swiftly he came, dispatching her assailant as she looked on.

From that day, he no longer lent her out, but also no longer sought her company with the frequency of years past. And all too soon, he informed her that she would be returning to the place of her training, where a new girl had arrived, and would need her expertise. She accepted this fate, as she had accepted nearly all that had come to pass yet, but a terrible blizzard conspired to ruin these plans. A carriage accident, and her Master and his footmen were lost, leaving her alone in all of Arcadia quite suddenly.

Making decisions did not come naturally to Lilith, so it perhaps took her longer than it might have to make her way to and through the Hedge. But make it she did, arriving on the outskirts of Leeds of all places. Unfamiliar sights and sounds and altogether too many people made for a terrible re-entry into the world of Iron, and were it not for a timely intervention from a merciful benefactor, she might have thrown herself back into the Hedge toward that which was familiar. Accepting a position as the personal assistant of a Leeds City Councilman, none other than her patron and an active member of the Winter Court, Lilith is a long way from finding out who she is, or even deciding she wants to know the answer to that question.

I was thinking of adding that she was unusually, almost deathly pale and changing her eye color to a dark red-brown, or an outright crimson that made it seem like she always wore contacts. I'm up for whichever you prefer, the perpetual 'just cried' look could have it's uses.

Question; how would the blessings work? I mean, a lot of them kinda rely on heavy tabletop mechanics, and seeing as we don't have stats like Strength or Wits, let alone a Di, I was hoping you could explain?

It's an abstracted version of it, basically. Spend Glamor to turn your hand into knives, or to temporarily heighten certain abilities. The only mechanic I really want to keep is a Glamor "pool" to prevent abuse of contracts. So Lilith's would be represented abstractly as spending a point of Glamor to aid the actions of another somehow.

Name: Sioned Davies (before), Rhiannon Jones (now), Elena Agarathi (to unacquainted changelings - almost a pseudonym)

    Gender: Female

    Age Taken: 3

Age Escaped: 22 (still looks to be 18, though)

    Seeming: Fairest

    Kith: Flowering

Blessing: Seductive Fragrance (9-Again on Persuasion, Socialize and Subterfuge i.e. better at persuasion, socializing and subterfuge).

    Appearance (Glamor):
Red-haired and blue eyes with pale skin, Rhiannon has a delicate beauty about her which entrances and mesmerizes those who look upon her features. She is neither tall nor short, standing at an extremely average five foot six inches tall with a petite physique which merely adds to her porcelain-like attraction. Vain and immensely proud of her appearance, she chooses to dress in clothes which accentuate her pale skin and fiery hair; largely in blacks but she takes care to add the colours of the Spring Court via coloured belts, jewelry and hair accessories.

Generally she chooses to wear a black, knee-length skirt, black stockings and a petticoat of the same colour with a plain white shirt to break the monotony. A sky blue belt around her waist, over her shirt so it is clearly visible, provides no function other than as an accessory while a white-gold necklace hung around her neck with a blue amethyst gem set in tear-drop shape continues her small dedication to the Court. Finally, a flower that appears to grow from her head itself, as no stalk is visible behind her ear nor is any clip present, is the single visible sign of her Kith. In line with her colours, the flower is a brilliant azure colour. A delicate scent of a multitude of flowers follows Rhiannon wherever she goes although she wears no perfume.

    Appearance (No Glamor):

    Court: Spring Court.

Personality: Whimsical and cheerful, Rhiannon revels in social occasions especially when she is the centre of attention. While not going out of her way to ensure that all focus is on her, Rhiannon is careful that at any event she has a fair gaggle of admirers following her every move. Her tools of trade include flirtation, when necessary, and she finds herself easily attracted to others, regardless of gender, but it is rare for this to last long as her focus moves on. It might come as a surprise, therefore, that she is not one to become jealous of another who receives more attention than herself; this trait perhaps has been received from being a mere object for others to look at before she escaped and although she enjoys and revels in being admired she is not incapable of going without it.

She also regards humans as somehow... lesser beings despite the knowledge she came from the same beginning. Using a human to her own ends, via manipulation or obsession, is as easy as breathing for Rhiannon and she will throw away the subject's life if necessary although she will not willfully dispose of them.

    Clarity/Wyrd: 5/7

    Glamor: 7

    Contracts and Clauses:
    Contracts of Vainglory:
Songs of Distant Arcadia - Become more persuasive.
Words of Memories Never Lived - Create a story so well-woven that everyone listening believes it wholly.

    Contracts of Fleeting Spring
Growth of the Ivy - Change one of the subject's desires
Pandora’s Gift - Temporarily produce an object the subject desires.

    Contracts of Verdant Spring
Spur the Crowd - Sway a crowd in a certain emotional direction

    Contracts of Eternal Spring
Gift of Warm Breath - Rejuvenates a target, alleviating suffering from fatigue and deprivation, and healing bashing damage.
Mother of All Deaths - Animates the plant life in an area and have it fight on the changeling's behalf.

    Backstory:
Rhiannon was a babe when she was taken, barely a wisp of memory remaining of her life before Arcadia. The only thing that had stuck with her was the lyrical Welsh tilt to her voice, sing-song and lulling hearers to sleep as if she were singing a lullaby, that she had inherited from her mother, or so she had been told.

Taken for her future beauty and the beautiful melodies produced by her voice, Rhiannon lived as a servant but not as a slave in the household of her male master. Raised, taught in the ways of the Fae and then when she began to grow into her beauty, displayed as a symbol of her master's wealth at social occasions. She would sing and sometimes dance for her master and his guests before being ordered to stand with other, similar, servants for the visual appreciation of the guests.

That is not to say that Rhiannon was treated well; abuse was often hurled her way by her master who was prone to anger and he deliberately overlooked the often overly-forward attention of his guests. Enduring it all, Rhiannon began to look for escape as she neared her nineteenth birthday, or rather what she knew as her birthday. The attention paid to her had become more and more lewd as her beauty only increased and she feared what might be coming. Unable to protest, for such an outburst would result in a severe punishment often worse than what she had protested about, she retreated within herself and displayed an outward joy at any social occasion, mastering the ways of seduction and manipulation to keep herself safe.

Her chance for escape came some years later; her master had paid her more and more attention in the years since her decision to attempt an escape until she was almost always in his presence. Often she would simply be ogled for hours but she led him on, narrowly escaping more serious interaction for which she had no wish. In the aftermath of a particularly rowdy occasion her master, intoxicated by the event, become more malleable to her will than ever before and she seduced him into taking her to his quarters. His guard lowered and a joy at finally gaining a long-standing desire that had only increased with Rhiannon's gradual seduction, the master escorted her to his own chamber for the first time.

Unfortunately, being as intoxicated as he was, Rhiannon's master was easy to manipulate into slumber giving her the chance to escape from his domain with those keys kept securely in his chamber. No one had followed her, as far as she knew, and she cast away the name he had given her as well as her original name and chose one that suited both her taste and her apparent heritage. The shock of her re-entry forced her back into a servile role, relying on seduction and manipulation. Quickly spotted for her talent, she received the patronage of a member of the Spring Court who also owned one of the larger local travel businesses. Now she works for him, using her skills learned from her time in Arcadia to pay back her patron's kindness.

Still unsure of her own safety and alien to anything other than her servile role, Rhiannon often slips back into said personality, relying on seduction and manipulation when her social awkwardness becomes apparent although she quickly retreats from interaction when any attention she has not guided is paid to her.

(Hope that's all good - let me know if anything needs ironing out!)
