"Aye, Vale! Damien Valefor if you prefer to follow in the steps of my late wretch of a father, terribly pathetic, and outright horrifying. I know your name through a curious series of events, beyond the understanding of a mere mortal boy, too young to be taking on such a daunting task, I'm sure... If you're so set on heading out, then I'm willing to play a game for the information! It would seem you have no choice, isn't it a shame? Or rather, a privilege, that you were to meet me here!"

Jenso nodded but the confusion he had about Vale didn't change. Why was this man here? If he wanted to ambush him, he probably would have tried to do so already. And he probably wouldn't have announced his presence before Jenso would spot him. "Uh...a game? Well, you're right. I guess I have no choice." He responded. "How does this game work?"

Vale hopped up onto the rock beside Jenso with a massive leap that defied normal human abilities. He then spun around and nudged Jenso off the rock with his knee, so that he would fall down. "Knock me off this rock! That's all there is too it!"

Now that he was on the rock, Jenso could see that Vale was wearing a skin-tight black pants-shirt combo, and a loose purple cloak. He had no shoes on, and he had a sword strapped to his back in a black sheath. Within his cloak, Jenso caught a brief glimpse of a dagger, glittering with jewels. "But I am an anchor, rather, a spike in the ground that mimics the immovable railroad! You are a mere farmer, failing to find a favorable fix for this bothersome fantasy! Ahaha..."

Jenso frowned at Vale as he got back onto his feet. Was this man insane? "Dude, I don't have time for-" He muttered, and stopped speaking mid-sentence. "...Alright, fine!" He said, and aimed a quick sweeping kick at Vale's knees with his left foot.

Vale didn't move, taking Jenso's kick like a solid statue. "Did I feel a breeze?" Vale quipped, turning towards Jenso and chuckling. "Come now, I know you have more power than that, quite a bit, a serious amount!"

Jenso stared as Vale took the hit like nothing. He had to be a Ki-user...how else would he take that hit without budging an inch? Jenso dashed further away from the rock, and dashed at Vale from the right. He hopped up and attempted to grab Vale's feet with both hands to try and pull him off with the momentum he'd gained.

Vale shifted his weight slightly as Jenso grabbed onto his legs, and didn't budge at all. He made a yawning motion, jumped up, and kicked Jenso away with a light tap.

Jenso crashed into the dirt again and scrambled to his feet. Pharie village needed his aid, and here he was, wasting his time trying to knock someone off a rock. "I don't have time for this!" Jenso shouted, as a surge of power rushed through him. He dashed further away and rushed at Vale once more with high speeds, attempting to tackle Vale off the rock.

Vale's eyes shifted towards him, and this time, instead of taking the force of Jenso's attack head on, he hopped over him and allowed Jenso to careen past his body toward the other side. Vale's nose twitched. "Mmm, that's the scent..!"

Jenso took note of Vale's jump and stretched his leg out behind him quickly, aiming to kick the rock away from under Vale's feet as he was about to land onto it while the power still rushed through him.

Vale landed on the ground beneath where the rock was standing and bent his knees. "Ohohoho?" Vale chattered. He stood up and clapped slowly, and turned his entire body towards Jenso. "Very clever, fox-like instinct and the power of a bear all in one! Such a veritable cocktail of flavors, oho yes.."

"Um...thanks!" Jenso replied to Vale. "Well, that was really interesting but I really have to go now. I won the game, so...which path is the path to Pharie Village?" He asked.

"Path? Who said anything about a path? Pharie cannot be reached by a path!" Vale sang happily, "Nay, rather, you'd be wise to travel directly north until you reach the Ice fortress of Pharie! The village is long gone, now inhabited by the frost golems of Noir.."

"Not whom, but where, Jenso! Where! Indeed Noir is a where, not a whom, not a what, not a sincerely disingenuous vampire such as myself, no-hoho.. You'll find out on your own, I guarantee it, my delectable block-head!" Vale teased, making his way south. "Too-da-loo~ Remember, north! North! North!!"

"Bye.." Jenso muttered to Vale, and began to head directly north like Vale suggested. He was unsure if Vale spoke the truth, but he'd soon find out. He doubted that an ice fortress would be hard to miss.

Vale turned back for a brief moment and chuckled to himself. 'That's one hell of a morsel you've dug up, Lark. I just hope he's headed in the right direction' Vale thought, treading his way back towards the south. He was awfully hungry, after all..

Chapter 18

Slip-up


Jenso made his way to the north, eventually skewing right off the path that would have lead him further north-east, and tread his way into a progressively more barren landscape. Eventually, snow began to fall at random intervals. Before he knew it, he was ankle-deep in a large blanket of white snow.

But there were no landmarks, no paths, and his body temperature began to drop. Had he made the right decision traveling north unprepared? Only time would tell, but Jenso's time was running short..

Jenso smiled as we has met with snow. It meant he was getting close, but as the cold reached him, he realised that he had been careless. He wasn't dressed for this kind of weather at all, and he would freeze if he didn't find shelter and a camp fire soon. 'No point backing down now...' He thought, as he tried to make his way through the thick snow.

As Jenso made his way forward, he could feel his body heat leaving him. After several hours of traversing the cold tundra, his body lost all its energy and collapsed into the snow.
