"Uh, thanks. But I'm not sleeping on stone." Jenso responded, taking some of the fluffy material near Paulie's bed. He made something that resembled a matrass with it, placing it on the ground. He laid down onto the fluffy material. "Good night Paulie.." He said with a smile.

Paulie sighed and rolled over into his bed as the night slowly crept closer. Jenso couldn't tell, but Paulie knew what time it was. The night was when the tundra was most dangerous, and not just because of the cold.

Chapter 19

Paulie's Pain


The next morning, Jenso awoke to something nudging him violently to the side. As his eyes opened, he was looking at one of the warbly birds right in the face. It pecked his shoulder and pushed him violently off the fluffy bedding near Paulie's bed, and nestled in to its 4 friends, who were sleeping next the Jenso a few minutes earlier.

Paulie kicked Jenso in the side gently. "Get up. I got a coat for you, it's over on the stove. Made it quick though so it might be a little thin," Paulie explained quickly, biting into a cooked potato, "Put it on."

"Hey, good morning.." Jenso mumbled, and sat up. He got onto his feet and walked over to the stove. He put the coat on and turned to Paulie. "Thanks for the coat, dude. Are we gonna go to the surface now?"

"Yea," Paulie answered curtly, leading Jenso up the stairs. Upon reaching the top, there was a wall of snow blocking their path. Paulie placed a hand on the wall, and his glove flashed a dime blue color. He then nodded, and the snow began to part for them to exit. "Stay close."

"Got it!" Jenso replied, staying close near his new ally. He paid close attention to the glove on Paulie's hand. It seemed similar to the magical bracelets that he'd seen in Orobo village, but this one was water-themed. It wasn't too surprising, since this area had a water elemental this time.

As Paulie lead Jenso out, they made a sharp left turn into the snow drifts the lead away from where the storm was originating from last night. The morning sun reflected off of the icy sheet of snow that they walked across, warming them up every so slightly. The chilly air was still apparent however. The further from Pharie they got though, the warmer it became. Paulie stayed silent the entire time, looking back to make sure Jenso was following him everyone once and a while.

Jenso began to walk slower, in order to stall for time. "Hey, Paulie...do you know what the source of the ice golems is?" He asked, casually. "I'm just curious, since I'm leaving anyway.."

"..No, aint got a clue," Paulie responded again. He stopped, turning to Jenso and glaring at him. "You better keep up, or I'll drag you though the snow by your ankles."

Jenso stopped and returned Paulie's glare with a glare of his own. "...You're lying, aren't you. You know exactly what's going on at that fortress and what the source is...please tell me. I'm here to help. I want to help, but I can't do that if you're not honest with me." He said.

Paulie scoffed at Jenso's challenge. "You don't believe me? That's too bad. I'm not hiding anything, and you're getting the hell out of my tundra right now. I've had just about enough of your stubborn nonsense!" Paulie shouted, while motioning towards Jenso angrily.

Jenso clenched his fists in anger. "Okay, I'm sorry for all the trouble, but...you said an ice golem attacked you, right? There's no way in hell I'm leaving this place if those things run around attacking people!" Jenso replied, as he began to relax a bit. "You let me stay in your place and didn't throw me out during the storm, and now it's time that I repay the favour." He spoke, and began to pause for a moment. "You don't need to worry about me, I can handle myself just fine! I'm pretty strong. I can prove it to you!"

Jenso held his ground as Paulie attacked, attempting to catch his fist with his hand. "I don't want to fight you dude.." He said in a sad tone, trying to calm Paulie down. "I don't know what those ice golems have been doing, but...I'm going to help you!"

Paulie's fist stopped against Jenso's hand like a rock against a brick wall. He cringed, but his glove began to glow again, and Jenso's entire hand was coated in a layer of ice reaching down to his wrist as Paulie pulled away. "Strength doesn't mean anything! It doesn't matter how hard you fight, or how strong you are. Everyone dies eventually! Everything is taken back by nature in the end! Stop with your stupid hero bullshit and get the hell out of my tundra!!"

Jenso's eyes widened as his hand was frozen, but he had no intention of giving in. He slammed his hands together, aiming to shatter the ice off of his ice-coated hand. "I know how strong nature can be..but that doesn't mean that I'm going to give up! If I don't even try, then how can I make things better?!" Jenso screamed in an angry tone.

Unfortunately for Jenso, the ice was much harder than he thought. It was like steel and refused to break. Paulie shook his head and chuckled hysterically. "You can't, not here. You'd be helping nobody. Everyone in Pharie is dead. The only thing you'd be fighting for is vengeance... Hell, if you can't even break that ice, you don't stand a chance against those golems."

Jenso glared at Paulie as his anger got the better of him. Paulie reminded him of Prisma for a moment, and how he mocked him for being weak. "You're WRONG! I will be helping somebody! YOU!" He roared, as a surge of power rushed through him. He slammed his hands together again in order to try to break the ice once more. "There's no way I'm going to leave now!"

Even with his surge of mighty Ki-fueled physical power, the ice would not shatter. Paulie shook his head weakly. "I don't need your help. I've gotten along just fine, just me and the warbly birds. We don't need you, so why don't you just go away??"

Jenso stared at the ice in shock as he failed to shatter it. 'No way..' He thought, turning to Paulie. "Dude...you're living in a cave hidden under snow...that's no way to live. I'm not here to fight those things for the sake of vengeance, I'm here to help Pharie out and make it safe for people. Even if everyone from this village is dead..." Jenso muttered, and frowned. "I'm not sure if you'll know what I mean, but...I'm here to help the water elemental out, too."
