**Greetings everyone. I'm currently in the midst of writing a novel and have reached a level of writers block that is extremely discouraging to me. A friend of mine suggested I find a community like this, establish a similar setting, and glean inspiration from other writers. Obviously, I will never plagiarize your unique material. I just wanted to try this out and see if it will heal my exhausted mind :).

Tensions between the United States and China have reached a boiling point. Last year, Taiwan's newly elected president declared independence from China and claimed the island for the Taiwanese Democratic Republic. Within hours, Taiwan was under siege from the Chinese navy and air force. As a fledgling democracy, Taiwan pleaded with the United States and it's allies to intervene on their behalf. It was a request that the western world couldn't simply ignore. President Holland requested an emergency teleconference with the Chinese president, Zhang Xi Bo, in an attempt to negotiate a ceasefire during which time peace talks between Taiwan and China could commence without bloodshed.
This request was ignored. The PRC released a formal statement that succession from China by any province is a declaration of war and would not be tolerated. The siege continued and the Chinese Army made preparations to invade the island. The United States dispatched 2 Carrier Strike Groups to the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam, but refrained from engaging the Chinese Navy.
Emboldened by the close proximity of U.S. Navel Forces, the Taiwanese president ordered his Army and coastal defense batteries to engage Chinese forces on sight, certain that the United States would aid them.
Allies of the United States, however, pleaded with Holland not to intervene. The inevitable world war that would follow a U.S. intervention in Taiwan would reap an economic fallout the likes of which the planet had never seen. The western world was weary from 27 years of war in the middle east and was willing to let Taiwan fall to maintain the peace. The United States called back it's Naval forces. The Taiwanese president released a statement, by video, on the internet condemning the United States as cowards and traitors as Taiwanese soldiers fell by the hundreds as the Chinese army stormed the capitol. Leaders of the Taiwanese government, including the president, were captured and sent to mainland China where they were promptly sentenced to death by firing squad. The execution was released on the internet for all to see.
What followed was a firestorm of criticism and condemnation directed at President Holland and the United States. The House of Representatives drafted articles of impeachment which was swiftly voted on and sent to the Senate. As the Senate deliberated, news surfaced that 5 U.S. soldiers, who were on a training mission, were among the slain in Taiwan. A Taiwanese citizen, who had managed to escape, revealed that the soldiers surrendered themselves to the Chinese army but were gunned down anyway.
Like a shift in the wind, global ire was now directed at China. President Holland assumed a hard stance against China, severing all economic links, and rallying the western nations under a new organization. The "Western Alliance." Who would seal their borders and trade only with each other. This action saved Holland's presidency and the Senate shot down the impeachment.
The extremely advanced Western Intelligence Agency (WIA) has prepared an intelligence report to the Alliance Committee. This report contains multi media attachments which reveals that Chinese soldiers appear to be receiving biological enhancements that boost a variety combat functions. Additionally, unidentified MECHANOID units have been sporadically captured by orbital imagery. No scientific data is available, but the pictures and videos don't lie. Something is going on. In response, the Alliance Committee has directed scientific assets to prioritize research and development of gene therapy and BioTech. Special candidates will be chosen from the civilian and military community to field test these modifications/enhancements. It shall be called the HERO Project. The scientific process must be expedited. China cannot be allowed to surpass the military lethality of the Western Alliance.
The primary task of the HERO project is to empower suitable candidates with superhuman abilities, and then investigate the source of the Chinese biological enhancements and MECH units.
For now, slots will only be open to Hero's of the western alliance. You'll be able to grant yourself any number of abilities (the stranger the better) so long as your powers are not too extreme. This is LOW fantasy, so Superman, Green Lantern, or Flash would be too powerful for this world. These are Generation One Biological or Technological upgrades so create your character accordingly.

Chapter One: We'll begin here, when your characters have completed their incubation/training/selection/modification. You can develop whatever backstory your desire for how you were selected and what powers you were given. You'll be enlisted into a special team of the WIA to assist with domestic organized crime, which has grown to be a major threat. During this time, the WIA will evaluate you until it determines you're ready to take on the primary mission.
