The sky was as dark as the demons intentions. A lone creature stood atop the roof of a ramen shop, its sullen face illuminated by the orange glow from several small diamond shaped lanterns hanging from a branch that it held in its cat-like paws. Looking down from the edge as these city’s streets flooded, but it knew this wouldn’t quench their thirst for chaos. It was on a mission to search for a brightness that only certain souls possessed. It began to ascend in the air and let out small puffs of white smoke, but it stopped to let out a soft gasp, noticing the hung lantern serving as the tip of its long tail starting to blink. Carefully swaying its tail through the air like a metal detector, until it noticed a young girl zipping through the streets on her bike and as the tail’s lantern blinked faster.

“She’s the one.”

This weather washed away her chance for a normal day. Somebody from her class thought it be really funny to steal that from her bag when they had their lunch break in the school’s garden. It was way past her curfew, but she couldn’t lose what was precious to her. And school wasn’t that much farther away. But even with her umbrella and rain jacket, she was getting soaked to the bone. She would just kept checking her dying phone to see if there was any new responses, but it was just the same strange ones she received.

"Peace is like a precious seed that grows into a beautiful garden if enough people pour their hearts into it. Humanity will see its splendor; diverse in the colors and life it brings to the world, when we’re all capable of loving and living with each other. But it needs be protected at all costs — from the demon uprising that’s spreading like a weed. Those with half-hearts may care less about what one does in the dark. But I warn that you must be the thorn in their side, for they lurk among the shadows, where you cannot hide. And cast your light to disinfect those that kill without mercy, before it goes beyond your control in a hurry…"

She’s seen a message like this before. It was connected to a recent online phenomenon that was being discussed in several message boards that spoke about gruesome-looking demons committing various amounts of violence. An attempted explanation at the spike in criminal activities for the past few weeks that seemed to be getting covered up by every news outlet. Anonymous users tell of their videos and photos being conficiasted by the police. But one mysterious username kept getting mentioned; sending phones cryptically poetic messages that was rumored to be a messenger angel. Though the amount of people that took any of this seriously was dubious. But something inside her knew this wasn’t a joke, as she briefly saw one of the monsters running downstairs into the school’s basement.

But she would never expect that someone was following her...

It was a cruel sick joke. Using her phone’s flashlight function to see the rose bushes that she planted were losing their vibrancy as they had been callously hacked into pieces. But the rest of the garden lay untouched and the item she came to retrieve was sitting on a mound of dirt. The young girl’s emotions were soon interrupted by the comforting orange glow that shined from above. Witnessing a lop eared rabbit cat creature floating on down? Speaking up in the softest and saddest sounding voice, it sounded like a young boy or maybe a girl? It was difficult to tell, but something kept her eyes glued to its tail lantern’s immense glow.

“It’s an unfortunate truth — that the beauty of your world can wilt away if no one cares to stop it before it happens. But weep not my child, as the clouds above show you great sorrow. You mustn't let your voice be drowned out by the storm. I can make your desires be heard, loud as the thunder. My lantern’s light will reveal your true potential, so you can shine even on the darkest of nights.”

The creature’s eyes filled with hope and a reassuring smile as it extended its long tail within the young girl’s reach. With white smoke pouring from all the lanterns...

“You know about the demons don’t you? I know you’ve seen them. I’ve been searching for ones like you that know the truth. The trouble they’ve caused your poor city. Those poor innocent lives stolen and buried within the dirt like your own possession. I’m sorry. I don’t want my words to hurt you. Quite the opposite — I want to bestow you with magical powers beyond your wildest dreams. To become as strong as your heart. You need to help me stop these demons for hurting any innocent soul that just wishes to live and love. Grab my tail and accept my light to destroy the dark! You can become a hero! A magical girl!”

It spoke so confidentially about something that sounded so silly. And answers to such a sudden and difficult question may have brought pause, but she would be given no time to think about it before hearing a loud cry for help. Was it coming from the school? How could you even hear it in all this noise? The promise made by the creature ran through her head a thousand times and all that she needed to do was grab its tail. What if she really was given the power to save lives, could she pass that opportunity up? It looked at her pleadingly.

“Please, just trust me...”

Mika's breath caught in her throat, her heart hammering in her chest. The light from her phone flickered, as if low on battery though she knew it was not.

As if demons were not confusing and terrifying enough, Mika now found herself face to face with a cat-like creature. A stranger, though the glow from its lanterns felt comforting in the oppressive darkness. Somehow it felt familiar. It felt safe.

How was Mika to know that was her first mistake?
“Are you… Are you the one who sent the messages?” Mika’s voice was soft and wavering; her unease was as clear as crystal on her soft features, her eyes wide with fear and… Hope? She clutched her phone to her chest, as if the small device could somehow quell the pounding muscle behind her ribs.

Could this creature truly offer her the power to save lives? The power to push away the darkness, to bring back the light?
There was another noise, perhaps a growl, perhaps just the wind, from somewhere deeper in the school grounds and Mika flinched involuntarily.

Why her? She was nothing special. She wasn’t a hero.

Mika pulled her rain coat tighter with a whimper, though the movement was futile as she was already thoroughly soaked. She shivered, but it wasn’t just the cold night air that caused her skin to prickle.

Demons weren’t real. This creature couldn’t be real. And yet Mika knew differently; she could feel it in her bones. She knew it with the same sureness that she knew her own name and her friends’ smiles.

All she had to do was take the creature’s tail. She reached out hesitantly; what if she hurt it? What if she grabbed too hard and made it yelp? Mika had never been one for violence, and she loved animals. She was the kind of girl who wept at animated movies when the cute, animal sidekick got injured.

Someone yelled for help again, and Mika gave a cry of surprise and panic. Was that-? No, it couldn’t be; Kiyoko wouldn’t be on school grounds at this hour. The night was getting to her, that was all.

Mika could feel terror welling in her chest. Eyes wide, she looked about her, frantic, trying desperately to place the source of the sound in the gloom, but the light from the lanterns ruined what little night vision she had. Everything outside of their glowing ball of orange light was an inky black, that seemed to undulate with evil.

Mika swallowed.

She had to be brave.

“I- I-“ She stammered. Logic told her not to trust the creature; she was a sensible girl, she knew not to blindly trusts strangers. But logic also told her that demons weren’t real.

There was no place for logic in this world.

“O-okay.” Mika whispered, resolute. She nodded, setting her jaw. She could do this. Even if the caller wasn’t Kiyoko, they sounded desperate. They needed help. Her help.

Mika was a good person. She always tried to help where she could; she was always running fundraising events for local charities at the school, offering to help younger students with homework, doing chores around the house and garden for her parents and neighbours.

This was no different right?

“I trust you.” Mika said with a conviction she did not feel.

She reached out, wrapping her fingers around the creature’s tail.

All of her senses became overwhelmed the instant she touched the tail lantern. Her hand followed by the rest of her body felt like it was entering a sauna, surrounded by a barrier of intense heat that served to soothe her skin. Her eyes flooded by orange light that made it rather difficult to see what was in front of her, but also adjusting her vision to let her peer into the beyond. She could only smell the intoxicating scent of the white smoke that was being absorbed into her body, a small whiff gave her the equivalence of a caffeine rush. In truth, it was almost like an out of body experience. She would know her entire body was stronger, faster and more flexible. That her mind was sharper and her soul was brimming with a mystical euphoria. Her ears deaf to everything but the cries for help and the creature’s voice caressing her like her favorite soft melody. The creature smiled and implanted his words deep into her subconscious, so that they would never be forgotten.

“I’m Eshu. Your closest ally and dearest friend. A lighthouse to guide your soul through the storm of sorrows. You’ve reached out for my beacon of hope and will come out of the smoke to burn brighter than ever before. With our bond we are bound by justice. Now go forth and be one of my lanterns! Take the hopeless and scared by the hand and lead them out of the darkness! Mika Mori, The Magical Girl!”

With the constant mental reassurance that he would always be on her side. Such a deeply rooted trust was something that would be nearly impossible to doubt once established. It would effectively erase her fears and hesitations to accepting that demons were among them, but that none of them could defeat her as long she believed so. But it was a faith that would be rewarded, her deepest thoughts of heroism would materialize to bestow great supernatural powers when transformed. She would choose something that best fit her personality. Whatever her mind conjured up would become her talent. The power to shoot fire from her fingertips. The divinity to walk through walls and on water. The skill to transmogrify materials into weapons. The ability to shapeshift into animals. It was ultimately her wishes that would decide. Her transformation process could be monumental, changing her very appearance to look more like an angel that descends from the heavens or it could be as simple as a bow in her hair. As long as it made her feel like a hero…

“Come with me! A demon is close by.” Eshu warned as the young girl seemed to return into reality. The walls of normalcy that once kept her imprisoned had been shattered and she was now free to follow the whims of her new companion as it headed for the school’s back entrance. The cries sounded like they came from inside her head and it was almost like a compass that perfectly calculated their exact location. It was just as she’d originally suspected, the demon and the victim were inside the school’s basement. And she could feel a sense of urgency deep in her heart telling her to hurry...

Eshu's lanterns could be seen as balls of light that blazed through the dark skies and heavy rain, but while he could feel Mika's deepest emotions and even hear her innermost thoughts. His thoughts were silent and only known to him. "My planning and patience has given me what I desire. Now it's time for the darkness to be extinguished by our light."

Though nothing physically hit her, the wind was knocked from Mika’s lungs. She felt like she was drowning, suffocating. Her body felt hot, but never quite uncomfortably so; somehow, though she could not say how she knew it to be so, she felt as though she were being reborn. Reborn as a stronger, less fearful version of herself; her fingertips tingled, not only with newfound power, but a need to act on it.

The blinding orange cleared from her vision, and the air no longer felt like it was crushing her body. Mika inhaled deeply, desperately and noisily, filling her lungs. The entire experience might only have taken seconds, but the difference she felt within her bones, within her very soul was that of eons.

Mika Mori was dead. Long live The Magical Girl.

Mika glanced down at herself; it was not just her mind and body that had changed, but her school uniform also. The simple sailor’s outfit had been replaced with an abundance of ruffles and lace in delicate, rose shades.

Mika had no time to stand and admire her new clothes, not with the pitiful cries that still echoed from inside the school. Mika set her jaw, meeting Eshu’s gaze with her own, determined one and nodded sharply, both hands gripping tightly at the staff(3) that had appeared with her transformation.

She would be Eshu’s lantern and she would burn brightest of all.

“Let’s do this!” Mika cried with a conviction she did not know she possessed, before setting off at a sprint towards the source of noise. She couldn’t just hear their need, she could feel it. And she, Mika Mori, would be the one to offer them the hand of safety from the darkness that engulfed the city.

Mika dashed through the school gardens, faster than she had even run before, round toward the back where she knew the entrance to the basement lay. The doors, blue paint peeling with age, were thrown open, the padlock laying discarded on the ground. Only blackness lay beyond, so dark Mika was sure she would feel it cling to her skin when she entered.

The old Mika would have frozen still, would have wept and not known what to do. But she was not the old Mika.

The crystal in her staff glimmered, illuminating the area if a soft, lilac shade as Mika pressed forward. Her new body, her new eyes, were able to penetrate the gloom with more ease than before. Her heart leapt into her throat as the light landed on the demon and-

”Kiyoko!” Mika gasped. With a shimmer, and with only the barest of thoughts, the staff in her hands remodelled itself in a flurry of petals, forming into a blade(1) with a razor sharp edge.

The monster was horrific, a thing of nightmares, but even more terrifying was the blood- so much blood. It pooled on the concrete, inky black in the dim light, slick under Mika’s feet.

With a scream, Mika swung the sword at the demon’s head, aim true.

Eshu and his lantern’s glow brightly spotlighted her from above as if the sun revolved around her, providing a heavenly light that always guided her forward and fueled her spirits until it radiated like her magical uniform. Entering into the unknown as the thought of potential danger had been replaced by remembering that her classmates would often gripe that nighttime made their school look like a lifeless husk. And in response, the school’s faculty briefly mentioned that they’d be creating late night clubs in hopes to liven the place up, maybe because they feared that the walls had ears to hear. But all the talk proved to be cheap as their two cent interpretations on both sides of the coin. Such shallow investments wasted on well-wishes would’ve been better drown out if one dared to dive deeper and discover their first step plunging into a pool of blood, only to realize they’d just gotten their feet wet. Morbid as the scenery and the sounds of sloppy eating coming from whatever lurked beyond the basement's doors. Her desires would be unlike her peers, in that she would beat the life out of the school and hope that it stays dead.

Her new-found heroism now faced an ugly truth with an unsightly underbite. The demon’s grating screech pierced her senses like a hand nailed into a chalkboard. Neck and neck no more, as her passionate swing cut the tension smoothly as butter to a hot knife. Its head marrying the beautiful blade until it was divorced from the body. Despite Eshu hearing her heart boom inside her chest, loud as the outside thunder. He witnessed a hero ending the encounter swift as lightning, even though he knew that the storm of demons raged on. He believed answering the cries for help would lead her to understand the grim nature of her true calling. The corpse would vaporize out of existence but the urgency of the situation hadn’t evaporated yet, as Eshu would hover over Kiyoko and alert Mika calmly.

“Your friend — might still be alive. But she needs treatment fast.”

His words were accurate against all odds. The floor and her body was practically painted red, but that raised the question of how does one person even spill that much blood? Perhaps the answer was behind leaking cardboard box number two, or three, or the many with their tops sealed in layers of duct tape that littered the room along with the discarded bones. How did she just start smelling the presence of rotting flesh? But somehow she could resist the normal reaction to retch and focus on problem solving. The hospital wasn’t that far from school and she still had a working cellphone; although its battery would spare her a mere minute to call for an ambulance. Eshu would interrupt this process with an alternative method.

“Listen. I cannot mend her wounds. The demon has cursed her with its evil. You can carry her and go get her help faster than anyone can come to you.” Frowning as his bleak eyes would stare down at her and make a plea. “And I know this will be hard. But when you get there, you must set her down somewhere and hurry home. I’ll make sure she’s noticed and that the professionals do their jobs. But you mustn't cast suspicion on yourself, when the demons will be actively searching for you now. Do you understand? This is for the good of everyone...”

Mika dropped to her knees, oblivious to the red that pooled on the ground, that now stained her legs and the hem of her dress. Her sword fell from her hands, landing with a splash before transforming back to its staff form. As quickly as Mika had dispatched of the demon, she had forgotten it, forgotten the way its head fell from its body, forgotten the feeling of power that sizzled in her veins as her blow struck home. All thoughts of demons and evil vanished, replaced by only one, more pressing matter.

Kiyoko.

Mika felt her heart pounding in her chest and the sting of tears prick hotly behind her eyes. She reached for her friend but had no idea where to put her hands. Should she try to stem the wounds, that were far too grievous for one young girl to treat? Should she stroke her cheek, offer her comfort and a promise of life that she couldn’t keep?

Mika choked back a cry of anguish. Never had she seen anything so visceral; but this was to be her reality now, as a Magical Girl, as a saviour of humanity, despatcher of demons.

“Kiyoko…” her words were little more than a whisper and betrayed the helplessness she felt.

Mika clutched a hand to her chest, tearing her gaze from what remained of her friend to stare at Eshu, orange light still bobbing merrily, the jubilant colour at odds with the grimness of the scene. Blood looked nearly black and shone like a moonlit lake.
“You promise?” Mika asked, swallowing hard. “You promise she’ll be seen to?” Mika knew she couldn’t ask Eshu to promise Kiyoko she would live; Mika didn’t believe even this magical creature could promise that and mean in.

Mika steadied her breath, grabbing the staff at her side and tucked it into a loop at her belt. Then, with the care of a mother attending a new born, Mika gathered Kiyoko in her arms; blood dripped from the body, staining skin and silk alike. Before tonight, Mika would never have been able to carry Kiyoko like this, but now she felt as light as the feathers at her back.

“Keep her safe, Eshu,” Mika pleaded, though the look on her face was one of sheer determination. “Keep her safe, and I will do anything you ask.” Casting one last look at the creature, Mika set off at a run, so fast she barely felt her feet hit the ground, headed towards the hospital where she would, as bid by Eshu, leave Kiyoko at the door before returning to the shadows without so much as word.

The hospital parking lot was busy as it always was lately. Flu season meant more sick people and hypochondriacs with enough animal-related diseases to make the place a circus. But what made it even worse was somebody had smashed all the streetlights in the lot, and they only finished cleaning up the glass. Shortly after the Mika had parted ways, a pair of paramedics were heading back in an empty ambulance for the end of their shift. Suddenly a mysterious bright white smoke cloud appeared floating in front of their windshield, simultaneously catching both of their attention, as they ended up following it and pulling up to the hospital sidewalk. Seeing her bloody friend lying near the door as a mysterious bright light shined on her. The strangeness was then ignored as they immediately sprung into action and went to help Kiyoko. The light and smoke vanishing when they had brought her inside the emergency room for urgent care. Eshu was able to peer through the open window to confirm they had found her a room. Able to take her in right away and finding Kiyoko’s name with her school ID and contacting her relatives.

But Eshu wasn't done yet. Holding his stick up high as the light from the two lanterns fused together and beamed straight into the air, creating a signal that was only visible to those that possessed the light. “If one of them are able to get here soon. Her friend should recover overnight, though her memories of the incident will be gone. For the better I'm sure.” Holding his stick closer as the lanterns dimmed to a mere flicker, his concern reflected back in the window. “I fear the demons activity hasn't been as significant tonight. Which means they may be onto us and trying to hide from our light. Lurking and waiting amidst the shadows — planning for a darker time to strike.” His eyes slowly scanned the whole place, the darkness surrounded him. A sharp gust of wind blew by that sounded more like cackling laughter. Malevolence was in the air. His assistance was no longer needed here, so he quickly flew off to handle unfinished business.

He watched the red flashing sirens from the skies above. Multiple police cars had parked besides the school grounds, with officers exiting their vehicles and heading into the garden. “I wonder if this is her doing...or it could be somebody else that had gotten suspicious. Suppose it doesn’t matter, since nothing traces back to her. Now, best check up on my newest hero.”

One moment can both save a life and kill her phone’s battery. Hearing more than the familiar creak of her house’s gate unleashed as she stepped through it. The chirping crickets couldn’t compare to the loudness drumming in her head. Approaching her the porch didn’t provide the same sense of normalcy that was there yesterday. Her thoughts would be hard to keep closed, like leaving the “welcome mat key’ stuck inside the knob. Perhaps the reason was right under her nose, the smell of blood overwhelming the squash scented air freshener she was usually greeted with when opening the door. Taking a hot shower wouldn’t wash away what was deeper than skin, and returning to her bedroom wouldn’t help kept her sheltered from the outside darkness. But it would prove to be a blessing in disguise that she didn’t live alone as it provided her a dose of comfort akin to a morphine shot, that let her heart rate slow before crashing onto the bed. Magical girl or no, her limitations were reached and she needed her sleep...

“Rest and have peaceful dreams…” A whisper coming from a soft smile that frowned slightly. “For tomorrow will have enough nightmares that you'll need to fight…”

Mika wondered if her heart would ever stop thrumming in her ears; its rate had slowed to something more normal, whatever normal was, but it still pounded loud enough she fear it might burst. Try as she might, she could not stop the image of Kiyoko, torn apart and bleeding down Mika’s arms and chest, from flickering into her vision, no matter how tightly she shut her eyes.

She didn’t even know if Kiyoko was still alive.

Mika stared at her hands. She had showered since she had returned home, and her skin was clean and pink and smelt faintly of citrus soap. But she could still feel the wet, stickiness of blood between her fingers. It had been warm as it seeped from Kiyoko’s body, but had rapidly cooled on her skin, drying dark brown and cracking when she moved.

Something like a sob escaped her lips, though no tears fell from her eyes. Some how she felt as if she might never cry again, as if the ability had been robbed from her with her recent transformation into a Magical Girl. Mika curled into the foetal position, pulling her blanket over her head, a cocoon of safety. Of course, if demons had been so inclined to attack then, the thick sheet of wool and cotton would have done nothing to protect Mika, but it made her feel secure; right now, that was enough.

Mika clasped a soft, worn bear to her chest; the thing had proved a source of comfort for her since the day she was born, but tonight was the first time in her life that it didn’t feel enough. She held it tighter and, had it been a real creature, she would surely have snuffed out its life, she squeezed so hard. But the bear was nothing more than a toy, and so, not for the first time, survived her fierce embrace.

Mika was not sure how long she lay there, hidden in a sanctuary of her own making, trying to block out the memories (or where they nightmares?) but eventually slumber caught her in its spell. Exhaustion took its toll and she slept, not peacefully, but at least without haunting thoughts.

Sunlight streamed in through the window, dimmed only by the pink coloured curtains that hung there, transforming the glow into something rose tinted. An electronic beep sputtered to life from a clock on her bedside, rousing Mika. She reached an arm out from under the covers to silence the noise with a single click.

Slowly, as wakefulness descended, Mika stretched out her limbs, stiff from the way she had slept. Sitting up, teddy bear still clasped in her fingers, Mika pushed the curtains aside, peering out at the world, already bustling despite the hour. Her brow furrowed.

It was such a beautiful morning. Birds chirped in the trees, and the people on the streets smiled at one another.

“Was it all a dream?” Mika whispered, to no one but herself.

It did not feel like it. But she hoped beyond all hope, that it was.

Suddenly answered by the noise of their living room television vibrating through her bedroom walls. A familiar news broadcast, with the overly enthusiastic hosts that was turned on every morning to wake them from their grogginess. But when she eventually ventured outside to check, she’d find herself alone with all the lights off. A peek out the window would confirm that there were no cars in the parking lot, and a thick layer of fog shields her sight from the rest of the world. Yet the loudness wouldn’t hurt her ears no matter how close she was to the screen, as everyone of her senses had sharpened into clarity. She should’ve felt it crawling atop her skin and from deep within her bones. Power — with an equally strong moral obligation to fight the horrors that faced her that fateful night. She just wasn’t the same person after what happened yesterday and today wouldn’t be any easier.

Reports on the spreading of rumors about demons online and the disturbing imagery getting shared among websites. A small group of cultist protests that erupted in violence. Cults that worship them and expect them to bring Japan to an end. Claims on monster sightings and speculation that they’re tied to similar conspiracies that are certainly fake — or so they say. Soon to be informed on her school being temporarily shutdown for a police investigation for an undisclosed amount of time. The only other information given by the authorities was that bodies were found and that they’re taken matters very seriously. But that would be met by a nearly instinctive cynicism in the back of her mind, could they solve anything if they didn’t even understand the problem? A man blind to the light can't kill the shadows.

Whether she remembered and acted upon his appeal or not. A brightness flashed into the living room and Eshu appeared, though the splendor of it was admittedly lessened as she saw him quickly shutting the window that he entered from. Despite approaching Mika by floating barely above her head and holding that lantern stick, the creature seemed oddly ordinary. Perhaps they had formed a connection of sorts, or maybe it was in comparison to everything else. The dull glimmer of his sad eyes expressed the same emotions she had. The way his stare peered into her soul would have sent chills down her spine, if he hadn’t immediately began to shine, showing a smile that comforted her heart before words had escaped his mouth. “Your friend is okay. Her parents were notified by the hospital. And if you wished to speak to her, I've gotten her room number as well.”

The cellphone hadn’t been charged, but a home phone was still in the kitchen that she could use. Finally obtaining some needed closure, that she had made a difference for the positive and saved Kiyoko from danger. The possible question of what comes next would be addressed before it was asked, shaking his head slightly as he spoke in a hurried manner. “Don’t worry about the demons right now and please excuse me, there’s somebody I must meet...”

And with those parting words, Eshu left the way he came in. Hopefully she'd enjoy a private conversation or at least a chance to contemplate. He didn't want to leave her so abruptly, but he couldn't afford being late with so little time remaining...
