Zeroth
It was a beautiful morning in the town of Prahuel, the capital of Cainbell's barony. Despite the clear sky above, the town was relatively quiet compared to most big towns. Some might attribute this to the fact that there's currently an ongoing sermon by the church of Miralis at the edge of the town, or one might be inclined to think that the town's relatively large vampire population makes the town much more lively at nighttime compared to its daytime. Regardless, Timothé wasn't here for any of that. He received an invitation with a noble seal a few days ago, asking for him to come for an initial assessment.

The Cainbell family was a noble house that dated way before the formation of Ryke as a country. Its capital was built on top of a series mana crystal mine, but it was stated to have dried all of its reservoir during the restoration period after the great race war 50 years ago. Yet despite all that, one of the area's highest revenues was still reported coming from mana crystal export, and an exclusive mysterious brand of wine dubbed the 'blood wine'. The details of these two products were a well-guarded secret.

Once he arrived at his destination, Timothé would be greeted by a line of professionally dressed maids at the entrance of the Cainbell's manor. These people might be his work colleagues soon, but for now he's still a guest that warrants the utmost hospitality.

"Greetings, Sir Timothé. Please follow me, Madame Helen is waiting for you inside." One of the maids, who looked to be the oldest, gave him a polite bow before guiding him into the manor. Like most noble estates, the interior of the building was regal and spacious, but some of the most notable features that Timothé might notice were the various shades of red that most of the walls were painted with, and the myriad of roses and crows depicted in various artworks displayed in the manor.

"If I may be a bit rude, may I inquire about your experiences in this line of work, Sir Timothé?" The maid that was guiding him suddenly asked. That was definitely not a usual thing to ask from a fellow servant right before the supposed interview. Yet the maid stared at him firmly as if she demanded an equally firm answer from him. This was when Timothé realized what was happening: The interview had already started, and this maid would be his first tester.

Timothé Was a little nervous about the interview, not that he would let it show. Dressed in a sharp, pressed three piece suit. He walked with haste, yet not rushing. He appeared calm and composed. When the maid told him the mistress of the house was waiting he simply smiled and offered a small bow. “Then we should not keep her waiting for long.” He strode alongside the woman whom he assumed was the head maid.
“I am here for a job interview, how would it be rude to inquire about my work experience?” He figured if this was the head maid, best case they would be equals, or at the very least he would be working under her. A question about his qualifications was bound to come.
“I am sure the Mistress has done her research, but I shall talk. The Longchambon family have spent many generations working for nobles. A distant noble line, that has since lost any claim to the land they once ruled, we, Longchambons… how you say… have relegated ourselves to house staff to maintain some semblance of our once proud lifestyle. That was several generations ago though. So I have grown up training and preparing to be a butler to a noble.” He explained as he walked.

"Ah, this is my first time meeting a Longchambon. I always admire people who can dedicate themselves to a role." After a few minutes, they finally stopped in front of a solid wooden door. The maid raised her hand to knock on the door, but stopped herself and whispered to Timothé.

"I heard the young miss also had some Levanos working under her, and she specifically picked the ones similar to her appearance so they could be used as body doubles." The maid gave Timothé a knowing wink before she finally knocked on the door four times. The Levanos would be similar to the Longchambon in a sense, a family that dedicated themselves to serving the nobles, but they had no noble blood and plenty of their members were recruited from a few chosen orphanages that they had cooperation with.

"Come in."

The maid opened the door and let Timothé into the room. It was a spacious office room with a pair of large windows that opened into the beautiful garden in the backyard. Displayed on the wall on the other side of the room was a large painting of what seemed to be a family of five. A man with a stern expression next to a woman with a relaxed smile was sitting in front of him. In various poses around their parents were three of the noble's children. The oldest boy was holding a book, the slightly younger girl was pinching the cheeks of the younger brother and the latter was giving the biggest smile he could manage. One of the most noticeable details was all of them except the mother had the same striking red hair and brilliant blue eyes.

"Welcome, Mr. Longchambon. What do you like more? Tea or Coffee? Or do you prefer something else like juice or milk?" The figure who greeted him was a woman with long black hair and black eyes, the same as the one depicted in the painting. She looked to be in her early thirties, but might be slightly older than that. She wore a simple dress but had a silver hairpin with an oriental design on her hair.

There's a set of padded chairs and a table in the middle of the room, Madame Helen's eyes silently hinted at Timothé to take a seat. Depending on what his answer to the previous question would be, the woman would pour the appropriate drinks from one of the ceramic kettles on the table and present it to him.

"I am Helen Cainbell. It's a pleasure to meet you. I know I haven't told you much from the invitation, but how good are you at handling teenagers?"

Timothé bowed at the woman as he entered. “Tea, Ma’am.” He answered shortly and to the point. He walked over to the chairs and waited for Helen to sit before he did as a show of respect.
“Teenagers?” He thought for a moment. He had served as a butler to a teenager before. However that employment contract grew complicated because it became unclear who he was actually meant to be taking orders from. The teenager ended up going against their parent. It was a complicated situation.
“I’ve worked with them in the past, though I must iterate, I am not a baby sitter. If you want someone who will watch over and tell them what to do, that simply isn’t me. My role is to serve, and protect.”
He took a sip of the tea.
“I will leave disciplining the child to you. I will however send you reports on their comings and goings, if you desire.”

"Protect and serve. I think its a good principles to go by, I'm hiring you as a butler so you don't need to concern yourself with education or disciplines." The noblewoman reassure him as she sip her own cup of tea.

"Though, I'm embarrassed to admit this but I'm actually having a hard time restraining her. She's crafty enough that even if I lock down this building and set 24 hours guards she would still somehow find a way out. So I'm now trying the other method, I want her to be free doing whatever she wants as long as she's safe, that's where your job come from."

"And I would rather you not report anything to me unless its absolutely necessary. She would hate me if I do that. You will be under my daughter Meredy's direct order."
Helen's eyes darted toward the painting on the wall, and then to the large grandfather clock standing in the corner of the room.

"She should be finished with her violin lesson soon. She said she wanted to go shopping today so I think its a good opportunity for you to know each other. I will provide the written contract later this evening. Do you have any question?"

“As you wish.” Timothé said with a small nod before taking another sip of tea. “I assume the Mistress has a house maid, to dress and bathe herself? Or she is contempt doing those things herself?” He questioned.

“I do assume my roles and responsibilities will be more inline with organising security, preparing meals, organising travel, budgeting etc…”

"True, she already has several maids and servants to handle the chores. So most of your task will be managing and security." The noblewoman answered. A moment later, several knocking could be heard from the room's door and another figure entered. This time it was a young girl with dark red hair and sharp blue eyes.

"Welcome home, Meredy. Look, I found a suitable butler for you." The woman enthusiastically greeted the girl. Meredy glanced briefly at Timothé before looking back at her mother.

"I thought I said I want an older buff one, with visible scars." The girl said as she picked up a document from the table, from the brief peek Timothé can get the paper had his profile in it.

"Timothé is much easier to the eyes though. Also he looks like the actor Zen Zhi Hao." Madame Helen had a sheepish smile as she said that, which invited a sigh from Meredy.

"Timothé... Timmy, meet me at the front door in five minutes. We're going to Widersia today." The girl said to the butler before she exited the room, presumably doing her preparation for the so called shopping session. In the room, the noblewoman looked at Timothé apologetically.

"She's a bit feisty. Hope you don't mind that."

“There’s something to be said about a lack of scars.” He said as he placed his tea down. Meredy did indeed seem like a lot. “Well, if you excuse me, Ma’am.”
The butler rose to his feet. Placing the empty tea cup on the table. “I would hate to keep the young Mistress waiting.”

He gestured at the drinks. “Would you like me to return the empties to the kitchen on my way?”

"Please, no need to mind about that." Madame Helena nodded at the maid that guided Timothé into the room. The older maid silently picked the used utensils and exited the room.

"Be safe, Sir Timothé. I will wait for my daughter's and your safe return."

Once Timothé arrived at the front door, he would saw a carriage was ready. Meredy was already inside the carriage, she had her head peeking out of the window while leaning on her folded arms. The girl noticed Timothé before glancing at the watch hidden underneath her sleeve on her left wrist.

"You passed. Come in." She ordered. Once he get in, Meredy signaled at the driver to start moving.

"I personally don't think I need another one under me, but I will trust my mother's judgement for now. Can you fight Timmy? And more importantly, can you drive a car?"

Taking a seat in the carriage. He looked Meredy up and down. She sure seems to have an attitude. He hoped once she became familiar with him, it would die down. “Do you intend on getting in many fights?” He retorted to her question about fighting ability. “It isn’t the main focus of duties and trainings, but I have been trained enough self defence techniques to ensure my client’s safety should something arise.”

He glanced out the window to watch the landscape moving past. “Though I would advise caution. It would be much easier for me to protect you if you don’t try and start a fight with every ruffian you meet.”
Timothé turned back to look into Meredy’s eyes. “Besides, as they say, there is always a bigger fish.”

"I'm not one to involve myself in physical conflict, Timmy." Meredy didn't shy away at looking straight back at Timothé, confidence and defiance could be seen gleaming in her eyes.

"But if there's a bigger fish blocking me from my goal, then I will use an even bigger fish, or maybe a bigger spear, to remove it."

It didn't take long for the carriage to arrive at their destination. A heavily-guarded building isolated from everywhere else. It's a teleportation spot, an old one. Said to be built before the great war. Meredy waved her family badge in front of the guard holding a black orb and they immediately let them in.

"Have you ever go to Clockhaven, Timmy? I like to do my shopping there so you better start familiarizing yourself with that city." Meredy asked as she stepped out of the carriage. In front of them was a large chamber with red crystals lining up the ceiling, the light that reflected by the crystals filled the room with ominous yet beautiful red tint. An old man in wizard attire seemed to be inscribing their actual destination into the large magic circle carved into the floor.

While they're waiting for the teleportation preparation, Meredy handed Timothé a piece of paper with several to-do lists written neatly on it:
- Obtain tavern from the auction (beware of Chocolate Man)
- Buy furnitures
- Buy clothes lots of clothes, all size

"A small list of what we'll do."

“It’s Timothé, Ma’am” He corrected her. He followed a step behind her.
“I can’t say I’ve ever been to Clockhaven. My business and training never ventured to the area.”
He grasped the list. “Now this list mentions, caution of a chocolate man? Is that a Chocolate Maker, or a man of chocolate complexion?” He said folding the list up and placing it in his breast pocket.

"Fine. I will call you Timothé, but you will also not call me ma'am. That makes me sounds old." Meredy huffed. "I guess you can call me young miss if you want to be formal."

"The chocolate man is the man that owns the chocolate factory. Last time I met him he wanted to acquire the tavern to expand his cafe franchise or something. Unfortunately the owner rejected his offers. Now that the tavern is put in an auction I have no doubt he would make an appearance."

The wizard who tinkered with the magic circle nodded. Meredy urged Timothé to follow her into the middle of the room. A bright light engulfed both of them as the crystal room teleported them miles away. Once the light subsided, they officially arrived at Clockhaven - the capital city of Widersia.

If Prahuel had a more somber vibe due to its mountainous isolated location and high nocturnal population, Clockhaven felts much more crowded and industrious. Its steam-powered technologies gave it a particular feel that couldn't be achieved anywhere else. The street was much larger due to the huge influx of vehicles and the sight of constructs doing various menial works were very common, splitting the road in two lanes was the tram rail that hums loudly as the box-shaped vehicle dragged itself across the city.

"Welcome to Clockhaven." Meredy welcomed Timothé into the city as if she was a tour guide, clearly enjoying herself here.

"Since its your first time here I have a little personality quiz for you. People here call it the trolley dilemma. See the rail there?" She pointed at the rail in the middle of the road.

"Now imagine you are standing next to the rail. The rail branched out into two rails and the lever that can switches the rail path is right in front of you. The first lane has 10 people tied right next to the rail, on the rail itself are barrels of boiling hot oil stacked on top of each other. On the other lane are another 10 people tied right on the track itself. A tram is coming at high speed. Left alone it will knock over the oil barrel on the first lane, spilling the hot oil on the 10 people next to it and kill them in a slow agonizing death. However, if you pull the lever then the tram will be diverted to the other lane and quickly kill the 10 people tied there." Satisfied with her set-up, Meredy had a wide grin on her face as she looked at the butler and stated the quiz.

"Would you pull the lever?"

“Thought experiments” He said as he rubbed his chin. “I am more of a follower, than a thinker, young Miss.” Timothé pondered the question. Looking up at the rail system above him. Playing out the scenario in his mind.
The way he looked at it, ten people were going to die regardless. Pull the lever, lessen the suffering.
“I am assuming there is no way to derail the trolley in this particular scenario…” he lowered his gaze to meet eyes with Meredy. “I am unfamiliar with how fast the trolley can decelerate, so stepping onto the track to cause an incident where they must stop is probably also out of the question, no?”

“Then I must pull the lever. A quick death is better than suffering.”

"An astute answer from a morality standpoint." Meredy clapped at the butler's answer, yet the mischievous grin didn't vanish from her face.

"However, Timothé, you just doomed yourself for no particular gain to anyone. If the God is in bad mood you might get the [Murder] label, which would make your life difficult until you atone. Moreover, you are now prone to be named as the culprit of the incident should the officials need a scapegoat." She explained as her grin turned into a giggle, then her expression suddenly became more serious.

"If you're going to serve me then you need to understand that the most moral answer isn't necessarily the best one. Look for a way for you to benefit of the situation, and be wary of what other people might do in response. Opportunity and survival should be the priority. Well, we're just shopping here but once you met some of my noble born acquaintances you might understand."

After a few minutes of walking they arrived at a lavish building with countless glittering neon light decorating the entrance. A couple of large bouncers stood in front of it, preventing random people from entering. Meredy waved a document towards the bouncer and after verifying it, they let both Meredy and Timothé to enter the building.

The inside of the auction house almost looked like a museum with the vast hall filled with numerous novelties. Vintage machine prototype made by dead artisan, now simply exist as collector items. Taxidermy of exotic creature in a glass tube waiting for someone to claim it and display it on their living room. A living horned horse, chained and restrained with a strange magical device on its neck. There's many more items being displayed here so the visitors would know what they can get today.

"Ohh, first time I see a unicorn. I might try bidding for that." Meredy nodded in excitement as she watched the horse from afar.

"Do you have something you fancy, Timothé? I can get it for you if you want. One of the perk of working under me is that I splurge for my servants too so no need to be shy."
