Charlie's Catharsis
@BaronOBeefDip

The bartender's expression remains unchanged as she wipes her tears. After a long moment of silence, he speaks.

"Interesting thing about twins," he says.

He gestures to one side of the bar. A spotlight cuts through the dim atmosphere, illuminating a man sitting alone at a table, nursing a drink. The light catches the sharp angles of his face as he glances at his watch.

"Same DNA. Same face."

A shift of his hand to the other side. Another spotlight flares to life, revealing an identical man across the bar, laughing with a group of friends, completely at ease.

"But if one does terrible things—" he nods toward the first twin, still sitting alone, "—we don't hold the other responsible." His hand indicates the second twin again. "We tend to recognize them as different people."

Lowering his hand, he continues. "Your William didn't kill his wife. Didn't infect his daughter. Didn't destroy that city. But everyone acts like he did. Expects him to atone. Even him, maybe."

The bar shifts. Charlie's own voice echoes softly from the shadows:

"I told him about what happened in Raccoon City. How he had killed his own wife, Annette. How he had tried to infect his own daughter, Sherry. That the entire city was wiped from existence... I think the realization of what his actions had caused resulted in genuine remorse..."

The echo fades.

"The sins of the father..."

The twin sitting alone reaches for something on the table—an apple, skin the color of dried blood, perfectly unblemished. Across the bar, one of the friends offers the laughing twin the same fruit. He takes it with a grin.

They both bite down.

Serpents materialize, coiling down their forearms, wrapping around their bodies. Laughter dies. Distant sounds rise from beyond—screams, gunfire, the rumble of explosions—before fading into oppressive silence.

"Those, we make the children carry. Forever."

The spotlights dim and extinguish.

A pause in the darkness.

"If you could see him right now, what would you say to him?"

A spotlight strikes the bar stool beside her. William Birkin is there. The light flickers, and with each strobe he changes. One moment something grotesque, inhuman, monstrous.

Flicker.
Human.
Flicker.
Monster.

The flickering quickens. Faster. Faster still, monster and human bleeding together until they're one and the same.

The spotlight cuts out.

In the bar light, it's just William sitting beside her. Charlie's Will.

Charlie had a surprised look on her face yet she understood what the bartender was saying. The original William Birkin and the clone. In many ways, they were different people. And, yet, they were the same. It reminded her of the old "Ship Of Theseus" paradox. If you gradually replaced the parts of a ship over time, would it still be the same ship?

That same paradox could be applied to people. To Charlie, the answer was simple. Yes and no. People grow, change, cells form and die, skin and hair is shed. Yet, that didn't completely change who they are. If anything, it helped to shape them, hone their traits. In the end, for everything that changed, there were things that were undeniably them.

The bartender's words also applied to people's perspective of William. To those like Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, he was little more than a mindless beast. Sherry saw him as a neglectful father. Umbrella saw him as both a brilliant researcher and disposable at the same time.

Charlie's Will had the memories of the original. Had his personality. Had his features. But, there were differences. Those proverbial piece of a ship that were replaced. Her Will could control his forms. He could willingly shift between forms, from human to quadrupedal beast with massive teeth to a tentacled blob that was mostly muscle and fat. Neither monster nor human, but something else. Something new yet familiar.

Golgotha. That was the name they decided for what Birkin and his offspring would be called. She was aware of how grotesque others saw his other forms. But, to her, he was still Will. He was still her friend, her work partner, her....

"Will?" she asked Birkin, "Is....Is that really you? I mean, you're not just some weird bar hallucination, or I'm not drunk and imagining things? If it's really you...we need to talk. There's something I need to tell you..."

Charlie braced herself for whatever response William was about to say. She silently hoped it was really him. That she had found him again after all that time.

That’s ‘cause deep down you don’t wanna leave.

That was... ridiculous. And unhelpful. And, as ridiculously unhelpful as the server’s answer was, there was the oddest ache in Teresa’s chest, like a wound that wouldn’t hurt unless someone called it out. For a brief moment, Teresa had the faintest impression of something pressing her to stay.

Get a hold of yourself. You’re imagining things that aren’t there.

Still, what option did she have? This place was clearly not in the realm of normality, not if the softly shifting shadows and the fuzzy, warped edges the furniture seemed to have were any indication. The possibility that Arts’ weapon did hit her was growing likelier by the minute. She might not be dead, but she didn’t have to be for it to be so. The mad man dabbled in soul magic; messed up mental landscapes were not out of the question. Her gaze shifted over to the girl in the armchair, who seemed increasingly uncomfortable. Did that mean the other people here were victims of his, too?

He was studying Desire, thought Teresa, grimly. There’s no better way to do that than ripping it right out of people’s hearts.

She would play along. See where that got her. When the time came, she’d get everyone out of here. Decision made, Teresa sat herself at the bar.

You mentioned catharsis,’ she said to the server. ‘How, exactly, would being here achieve that?

Morgan's Catharsis
@Tlazolteotl

"Sure as hell." He laughs and repeats the phrase again before downing the glass. "Sure as hell..." The liquid burns the back of his throat and he's left crunching ice. He rests a hand on the counter, fingers mindlessly tapping against the surface. "What's this place called? All my life in towns 'n' I ain't ever see a bar so..."

He takes another look around, eyes scanning over the anxious girl in the corner and Teresa sitting a few seats away from him, then back to the other customers. Wasn't like the other bars he's been too, not too much fighting going on; no rowdy customers overstaying their welcome or yelling. More importantly, he wasn't being called to break up a fight or two.

"Refined." He sets the empty glass back on the counter. "Never seen a bar so refined in all my years of livin'."

He overhears a bit of Teresa's conversation and returns his attention to the bartender. "So, this some kinda after-life?--Purgatory, as they say. Would make sense as to why everyone's so calm, no point in fightin' when you're already dead.... Figured if I ended up anywhere, it'd be six-feet under and burnin' dead."

Charlie's Catharsis
@BaronOBeefDip

The weight of the question hung between them.

"I am... But in the way that matter most?" Something like regret crossed Birkin's face as he shook his head. "No."

The bartender appeared, sliding a drink across the bar. Her partner nodded once. "Thanks." He lifted the glass and took a long sip before setting it back down.

When he spoke again, his eyes found hers. "Whatever you need to say, if you can't say it in a dream, you won't say it to my face when we reunite."

Teresa's Catharsis

The server shrugs. "I mean, you can do whatever. Grab a drink, people-watch, stare at the wall for like three hours straight." He plants his hands on the bar and leans in. "But if you wanna get out? Usually that happens when you get whatever's eating at you off your chest."

━━━━━━ ◈ ━━━━━━

Morgan's Catharsis

"To some folk, this is purgatory." Glass clinks as she shelves the bottle. "But the calmness? The refinement?" One hand lifts, tracing Morgan's shape in the air. "That's all you, hun." The smile she gives him is quick but warm.

━━━━━━ ◈ ━━━━━━

Sirpa's Catharsis

The Keeper's gaze drifts to the businessman in the back, typing at his laptop with hunched shoulders, his face lit by the screen's glow.

One clawed hand extends toward him. Pulls back the boundary between catharses.

What they see is war. Smoke and blood and the rattle of automatic weapons splitting the air. Office workers scramble through trenches in their business casual. One drives a letter opener into a coworker's spine. Another swings a stapler, cracking it against someone's jaw. Commanders in blood-splattered suits roar from platforms of shattered desks. Somewhere, a presentation board explodes. Bodies hit the ground.

And there, crawling through the mud: the businessman. He drags himself forward on his elbows through the mud, breath ragged, chest heaving.

A shadow falls over him. He lifts his head to see a general standing over him. Spit flies from his mouth as he screams: "GET UP! MOVE MOVE MOVE! You worthless—weak—pathetic—"

None of them knew the businessman. But watching the general scream down at him, they understood that the two were father and son.

One motion from the Keeper and the boundary zips shut. At his laptop, the businessman continues typing like nothing happened. His coffee cup has gone empty, which the Keeper remedies. He never stops working.

"Everyone's catharsis is different."

Their attention shifts to the man staring at his mug—thirties, glasses, shoulders hunched like he's trying to take up less space. This time, the Keeper doesn't just pull back the boundary. They pull Teresa, Morgan, and Sirpa through it.

Lost in Translation

The world shifts. Everything that was—coffee shop, bar, whatever they were in—dissolves. Sound crashes over them before they register anything else. Bass vibrates through the floor and into their bones. They're standing in a party venue now, surrounded by movement and sound. Bodies press close. The air is thick, sticky with sweat and alcohol. Music drowns out everything except the occasional shriek of laughter that somehow cuts through.

In the middle of all that life and energy, the man in glasses sits alone at a table, staring at his drink.

"Want to understand this place?" asks a young employee with short neon green hair and piercings glinting in the lights, all in black. "Figure out their catharsis. Maybe then you'll understand what drew you to yours and how to get out of it."

The realization hit Charlie hard. She had to tell him now or she would never be able to. With that, she took a deep breath and braced herself for whatever happened next.

"I love you." she confessed, "You're the best thing that's happened to me for so long. Monster, human, Golgotha, all of you. Whether you're a clone or the original, you're still Birkin. You're my friend, my partner. Please, let me love you."

Charlie gulped hard. The look of apprehension and hope were clear on her face. She felt relief for finally being able to confess how she felt to Birkin, yet she was also terrified of what he might say.

Lost in Translation

Sirpa peered around the armchair to eye the businessman that the being had pointed out. She jumped in her chair at the shocking sight of the violent battle that they exposed. Was that what he is experiencing right now in this state of...catharsis? Were all of the seemingly normal people in the coffee shop experiencing some other reality right now? Sirpa glanced around at the other customers, all calmly enjoying their afternoon. Evening? There were no clocks, and Sirpa couldn't tell the time of day by the lighting in the room. There were simultaneously no windows and a normal amount of windows. Sirpa couldn't discern what "outside" looked like.

Before she could start to think about what "outside" might even be, she felt herself tugged forward to her feel through a portal??? For crying out loud. Where was she?

Again, there was not enough time to consider her thoughts. She was almost immediately overstimulated by the noise, the jostling, the humidity, and the smell of sweat. The flashing lights bothered her as if someone had held up multiple flashlights right against her face and moved them around quickly. Technically that wasn't much different than what was happening, but still.

Sirpa could barely hear the person talking to them. It was at that moment that she realized that they were at some party, maybe a club? That familiar feeling of static she so often encountered at events like this crept up her hands, feet, chest, and face. Sirpa closed her fingers around her thumbs and squeezed, searching for stability. She squinted at the fighter and the cowboy, two very unlikely people to find herself in the same room with at all. She made a note to stay close to them. They were familiar and somehow seemed safe among the partygoers. She didn't know them, but in this new setting she felt somewhat connected to them just by shared experience. They were all in this "catharsis" place, all coming from somewhere else and not quite sure what was happening. Besides, she couldn't see that big cat thing anymore. Where did they go? Or did it turn into the employee who was talking to them right now? Anything could happen, apparently. Sirpa wrapped her arms around herself and grounded through her feet, trying to make herself feel steady among the throbbing mob of people.

Charlie's Catharsis
@BaronOBeefDip

Birkin had just raised his glass to his lips when Charlie spoke.

"I love you."

The drink went down wrong. He sputtered, coughing violently, his hand flying to his mouth.

It took him longer than it should have to stop coughing. When he finally did, he stayed silent. His face was flushed, eyes slightly watery—whether from the coughing or from what she'd just confessed was impossible to tell.

Birkin's hands turned the glass in slow circles, gaze fixed downward.

"Are you sure?" His voice was quiet.

A simple question, but it had so much packed into it. Did she understand what being with him would mean? The judgment from others for loving a monster—for loving someone who inherited the sins of the original. His future was uncertain. His children's future, even more so. Was she absolutely sure this was what she wanted?... Him?

Charlie chuckled in response. Not one of mockery, but of reassurance.

"You had the same response when you found out you were pregnant." she pointed out as she placed her hand on his gut, "Oh, and you still look good with a dad bod."

She then wrapped her arms around him. It was such a simple gesture, a hug, but it said more than any words ever could. Charlie smiled as she felt Birkin's flab squish against her body.

"I love you." Charlie repeated with absolute certainty in her voice while gently brushing the tears from his eyes.

Charlie's Catharsis
@BaronOBeefDip

Air huffed through Birkin's nose at the dad bod comment.

Charlie wrapped her arms around him and his body went rigid, shoulders pulling back on instinct. He caught himself. Forced his muscles to relax. The angle was wrong to return the embrace, so he allowed himself to be held.

For a moment, it was just them and the warmth.

She pulled back to wipe his face, and his hand rose. Hesitated. Then his palm found her cheek, thumb brushing across her skin.

"You managed to say it," he whispered. "So you'll be able to say it again. When we meet again..."
The rest lodged somewhere in his throat. His jaw shifted, working around words that couldn't come.

"You will find me, right?"

"Of course I'll find you." Charlie nodded reassuringly, "I just need to know where to look. In the meantime, stay out of trouble, and try to keep that cute little belly of yours. You always were self conscious about your weight. If you ask me, you look better with that pudge."

She hugged him again and kissed him on the cheek. Charlie then turned her attention to the bartender. She felt a proverbial weight lifted from her shoulders and was ready to face whatever came her way.

"Thank you. Um, before I go, if I can go, do I need to pay you?" she asked.

The bartender's expression doesn't change, though something in his eyes might have softened. "You already paid."

Lifting his chin, he gestures toward the entrance.

The stool beside Charlie is empty, as if Birkin had never been sitting there. He stands at the entrance now, backlit.

He turns to face her, holding his hand out.

"Don't make him wait too long," the bartender says.

"I won't. And, thank you, again." Charlie nodded.

She then gets up and makes her way to the entrance of the bar and goes through the door. Part of her is nervous to what awaits her, but part of her feels reassured that things will be ok. That, at the very least, she no longer has to face them alone.

"You flatter me, lady." Morgan lets out a genuine chuckle. "But there's some kinda catch, ain't there?"

He blinks.

The bar is gone, replaced with a booming club venue. Sirpa and Teresa are nearby, he notes them for a moment before focusing on the lone man drinking at a table a little further away. He lets out a sigh--had his arms been natural, he'd have stretched, crack his joints a bit; he settled on popping his neck.

"Always a catch..."

He listens to the employee. Figure out another person's catharsis to get out. Seemed simple enough. Just talk to the man at the table, get it over with, and go back to his little purgatory... Clubs, bars, wherever the hell; they all gave him bad memories. His shoulders tense, metallic fingers constantly furling and unfurling in anticipation, but nothing comes of it.

He turns to Sirpa with a look of concern, hand extended. He never liked the look of scared people. "You alright there, little lady? Ain't nothin' to be afraid of in here."

"Plenty 'o' folks to keep you safe." He gestures to Teresa and eyes the crowd again. They're lost in the moment--a dancing mass moving with the beat; there's only a single outlier sitting by his lonesome, still there, still drinking. "Doesn't look like a fight'll break out anyhow."

Sirpa looked up at the cowboy as he addressed her. She squinted her eyes against the flashing lights to watch his lips as he spoke, matching what she could hear of him saying through the noise with the shapes that his mouth made.

"I'm sorry, it's just so loud," Sirpa said, speaking loudly herself so as to be heard over the music as she pressed her hands harder over her ears. Saying it out loud made it sound silly, but still she felt that static buzzing feeling swarm her hands and chest. Sirpa took a step closer to the man anyway, finding comfort in being considered. She glanced at his metal arms. He must have been through a lot, Sirpa decided, to have lost both arms. "What do you think we need to do?" she asked him.

The Void Once Called Charlie's Catharsis
@BaronOBeefDip

With her first step toward the exit, the bar begins to dissolve.

The walls crumble like ash caught in wind. Tables, stools, bottles—all of it dissolves into nothing. Beneath the Keeper's feet, the floor gives way to void. Suspended, they wait, making certain every last trace of Charlie has vanished before looking down.

In their open palm, a mass of tissue squirms. Half-formed body parts grow from it—an eye embedded in the flesh, teeth jutting from one edge, an ear, fingers that curl and uncurl. A pulse runs through the mass.

The Keeper pinches the thing between thumb and forefinger and turns it, examining from different angles. It writhes.

They open their mouth and drop it in.

It tastes much sweeter than it looks.

The deep, rhythmic thrum of bass hummed through the soles of her boots to the tips of her fingers as Teresa’s gaze flicked between the bespectacled man and the employee addressing them.

Witnessing the businessman’s private battlefield, finding themselves thrust flat in the middle of another’s apparent mental anguish – it stirred a mild sense of disgust somewhere within Teresa. These were people’s minds, casually paraded around as, what, things the server collected? Who was the server? This green-haired employee didn’t sound at all like the server, but did in a way Teresa couldn’t pin down. Were they working for Arts? Helping him collect from these entrapped victims? Making them the unwilling spectators of others’ suffering like this, too; how sickening.

Almost as soon as the thought occurred, the sounds around her dipped. The violent thrum of bass in her bones faded to a distant tremble. For just a brief moment, the bar they had just been standing in flickered back into view. If anyone had been looking at her in that moment, they would have seen Silver Blade briefly flicker out of existence, before fading back in.

Teresa blinked, hard. The lights and music returned with a vengeance. The girl and the cyber-cowboy were still there. She clenched her right hand into a fist – and then relaxed.

Reality was loose here. And, apparently, somewhat moulded by their thoughts. She couldn’t lose sight of the mission.

Didn’t you, though?

The voice of the cyber-cowboy drew Teresa back to the present. His words seemed to relax the girl somewhat. Teresa looked back at the bespectacled man, considering.

If that man is the key,’ she said, ‘then we talk to him.

The girl still seemed nervous about the situation, but as things were now, there was nothing to do about it but to carry out the task that the server – whatever they were – had given them. And the cyber-cowboy seemed benign enough. The faster they could resolve this, the faster they could all go back to where they came from. With that thought in mind, Teresa moved ahead, laser focused on the man sitting alone.

The mass of dancing people around them may have been a difficult obstacle to navigate for some. Teresa, all too used to facing crowds of screaming citizens running from the newest villain on the loose, simply moved with the flow of movement, squeezing and sidling through the narrow gaps between bodies. She got to her destination in short order, coming up to stand next to the table the bespectacled man sat at.

It was a moment before she spoke, gathering her thoughts. She wasn’t Silver Blade talking down a villain right now; she was Teresa, talking to a civilian, who, by all rights, didn’t seem to be having a great time.

Relax, chided Caden’s voice somewhere in the back of her head. Don’t you have fun sometimes?

Hey.’ It came out soft. Maybe too soft, considering the pounding music around them. Teresa cleared her throat and tried again, a little louder, jerking her thumb towards the dance crowd. ‘Hey. Not joining them?

The man looks up from his drink and meets your eyes. His widen. He glances left, right, over his shoulder. When he finds no one, his gaze returns to your face.

There's an awkward attempt at a smile. His shoulders creep toward his ears as he wets his lips and draws a breath.

A shake of his head. His mouth moves in clear, deliberate shapes—you can't hear him.

You lean closer. Ask him to repeat himself. He tries again, brow creasing, speaking with more emphasis, mouth opening wider around each syllable.

Nothing. The noise around you swallows every word.

He could scream until his throat bled and you would never hear him.

Then that small spark when he first met your eyes, that brief, hopeful glimmer of maybe this time, gutters out. Careful blankness settles across his features the way it does when someone gives up.

He returns to his drink as if you were never there at all.

Sirpa eyed the man as the fighter spoke to him. Weird, she thought. Is it just too loud to hear him? Sirpa stepped forward to stand beside the fighter and address the man as well. She paused for a moment, watching him with his drink and considering. Then, she carefully took one hand away from her ear and reached for the man. She gently placed her hand on his shoulder and carefully watched his face for any reaction.
