@Tlazolteotl
I teach about music therapy! This semester, I'm teaching three classes:

1. Music with Children in Inclusive Settings which goes over music therapy in special education.

2. Research in Music which focuses more on music therapy research, but in general is an introduction to research with a theme of music-related research.

3. The first semester course for Practicum where the students are going out into the field to start doing music therapy under supervision!

I'm only teaching for this semester to cover for the program director's sabbatical but I plan to stick around to continue supporting students and cover a class here and there if needed.

:oo roleplayerguild needs a fire reaction bc that's p πŸ”₯ yo

also @Tlazolteotl I did indeed get enough rest, thank you :) ready to have a go at cracking this mystery man 🧐 (disclaimer: I am usually Not Great at mysteries LOL)

edit: wait, I just realised that the first Lost in Translation posts describes the place as a party venue, but doesn't actually say it's a club. are they indoors or outdoors? and is there other stuff that they can interact with? I'm wondering if there might be more clues in the environment (unless I'm overthinking it, in which case more fool me πŸ₯΄)

@silver21 like everyone said, that's πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

I hope that you'll be able to continue! Are you hoping to become a professor? Or maybe hold your own practice in the future?

@Stanifly As far as anyone can tell, the venue's indoors, but if you want to know more about the place, you gotta explore!

I am not planning to become a full-time professor haha, I want to create a music therapy program in our local school district. I worked at one of the county schools previously but our university sends practicum students into the local schools every fall and we want to have a solidified program there for continuation of care for the classrooms we work with and expand into more schools and classrooms in the district.

Fixed it. I totally interpreted your post as Teresa leaving and talking to Morgan lol

@Tlazolteotl
I've always been into music and I wanted to be a verbal therapist in high school but then after I went to junior college I was like "music therapy has to be a thing, right?" and a university less than an hour from me had a degree program for it lol, I ended up getting stuck on YouTube for hours for like three days straight watching videos of music therapy, especially in pediatric hospitals and with NICU babies. I basically changed my major overnight. It was cool because I had a moment of "oh, this is what I'm meant to do!" That all got me into it and then once I learned more in undergrad, I ended up working with at-risk youth and I love it! I'm transitioning into mostly special education now but I still work at the kids' summer camp for our local family shelter and would love to continue with that population

@silver21 Had a major Soul moment there 🀩 It's always amazing to hear about people finding their passion. Even more so when they're able to put it into action! I have many interests but none that I can say I'm passionate about, so that's really admirable.

As someone who's dabbled in verbal therapy, I have a feeling you might have some insight into the "Lost In Translation" situation 😏

Thanks! It was nice to feel clear about it. Since then I’ve wondered if I should have gone into teaching bc I love working with kids, but I don’t want a classroom of 25-30 of them so I feel pretty good with the direction I chose lol. Tutoring on the side fills that in for me. It’s neat bc I think my β€œthing” is working with kids, and with music therapy I can support them in academic and personal growth through a medium that is less scary and very play-based

I’m curious what y’all do for work?

Also yes, I do have ideas πŸ˜‚ BUUUT Sirpa doesn’t!! At least not to the same level lol
I LOVE a good working-through-traumas storyline (and creative representations of it). I’m excited to see this character’s situation unfold 😁

can relate to the fear of a classroom full of kids lol πŸ˜” I've pondered dabbling into tutoring but the pressure of being responsible for someone's education always has me chickening out

I am in fact currently studying! linguistics πŸ“œ the career prospects are remarkably low (at least considering where my interests lie) but I do enjoy the assignments, like dissecting the meaning behind the emoji of πŸ€”. it's wacky fun

@Stanifly Linguistics!? If you have any advice on improving writing skills/styles, I'm all ears... My stuff starts to sound all the same 😭

I'm also curious about what things you're interested in doing with linguistics! Is there any particular area you're hoping to have a job in?

@silver21 I'm also studying and doing research about cognitive science! Got a big presentation next week, so I've been focused on getting ready for that.

honestly, I'm kind of just here for the vibes LOL. linguistic career paths typically point to social work, fieldwork (like actually going to places to study/revive/maintain indigenous languages), or research. so far I'm not super interested in those options, but it's def a v cool thing to study before I fall back into the 9-6 grind πŸ˜ƒ

@Stanifly Linguistics!? If you have any advice on improving writing skills/styles, I'm all ears... My stuff starts to sound all the same 😭

oh no, linguistics isn't the same thing as literature. it's the study of languages and it's a pretty broad field - goes into how we produce and understand meaning in the sounds we make, how languages change when they make contact (like Tagalog + English = Taglish in the Philippines), social hierarchies built around language, etc. it's essentially breaking down how we humans communicate at a scientific level.

that said, the writing problem you mention is SO REAL. I feel like I can't escape the clutches of the writing style I've settled into and it's so advsjdbsb 😭 the only thing that's really worked for me so far is digging into the psyche of characters who have worldviews as far from mine as possible. it might not always turn out great, but it's a neat exercise to look back on and then see which parts could've been done better 😌

Lol yeah it sounds very cool!! And who knows, maybe it will give you a leg up someday. It’s fun to study for the sake of learning. I think some students get too focused on finding a job that they forget to enjoy their degree

@silver21 It's hard to narrow it down since all of it's pretty interesting!

Without going into jargon, the upcoming presentation's about measuring "self(hood)" and individual differences in behaviors (and thought) using physiological recordings (such as brain signals).

@Stanifly Darn, I was hoping that knowledge of language might give some ideas (kind of how knowledge of how the brain forms memories helps gives ideas of how to study better) 😭

Is your field of study closer to linguistic anthropology?

I'm fascinated by languages and I have this dictionary of old words that aren't being used anymore and also words that don't exist in one language but does in others. It's so cool cause you can really understand a lot about a culture by what words exist.

I've been seriously considering trying out "sentence diagrams" on authors whose writing style I really like to try and understand what I like about it... but I have no idea how effective sentence diagrams are since I've never used them in my life πŸ˜…
