Name: Yuu Nozomu Gender: Male Age: 17 Hometown: Hearthome City, Sinnoh
Appearance:
Yuu is a fairly tall young man, standing at a decently impressive height of 6'2", and weighs 178 pounds. He possesses a fair complexion with an impressive build that is concealed by his lanky appearance due in no small part to the type of clothing he seems to wear and the way he carries himself. While he is a handsome young man, he possesses a notable resting bitch face and seems to always be glaring everywhere he goes with a sullen frown that makes him appear cold to almost anyone who interacts with him... if they even want to interact with him in the first place.
The boy's hair, while appearing disheveled, looks paradoxically well-maintained. The reason behind this is due to how long he has let it grown, as well as how he lets it drape over his face, sometimes obscuring one of his piercing yet dull and lifeless violet irises. If one could call eyes the windows to the soul, despite his cold and stony stare there seems to be hints of regret and emptiness hiding in his stare. Another notable trait involving his hair has to be the color itself: lavender. While he does have a few dark streaks in his hair, his hair (and all hair on his mother's side in general) is completely natural.
Yuu has no particular taste in fashion and is relatively indifferent to what he wears, though he did bring a few different types of clothes for his journey, the first example being his regular getup. It features a midnight blue jacket with feather-like tufts, a green tank-top, beige pants, and travel boots that seem to be able to weather almost anything. Funnily enough, he also possesses a copy of the same clothes listed above, but with alternate coloration's; instead of a midnight blue jacket it's a dark moss green jacket with a black tank top, followed by carmine-colored pants; the boots remain the same. These are the two primary outfits he'll more than likely be seen with during his travels, though there may be rare times where he changes into something different.
Personality:
Yuu is anything but confident, as from the get go he displays a rather dour and somber disposition that makes him appear quite unfriendly to the point where he seems nigh unapproachable. The sour expression does match the curtains, extending to the way he interacts with others in a cold and sometimes blunt manner, resulting in him being quite rude or standoffish, much to his dismay. However he reacts though is... a mixed bag, with him sometimes doubling down on the manner, constantly pushing despite the fact that it would be better to just stop, or very rarely, trying to (and mostly failing) to awkwardly apologize in his own way. Funny enough, despite the fact that he would be expected to be more quiet (and he is), the moment someone gets his mouth going and he just won't stop talking. Yes, Yuu can have a bit of a motor mouth.
Despite how blunt and aloof he can be, he also generally appears to be emotionally withdrawn, and even detached and unresponsive to the world. This can result in him approaching things with an uncaring glare on his face, making him quite hard to read; it doesn't exactly help either that he doesn't have the most outward reactions, such as an invisible twitch of his cheek or merely raising an eyebrow just a pinch. However that outward apathy does stem from somewhere, this affliction being his regret and self-doubt. The most common way this rears its ugly head is through his self-deprecatory streak, as his words can sometimes be laced with venom that seemingly is targeted at someone, but in actuality is more aimed at the young man.
Beyond these traits though, he can sometimes come off as a bit of a know-it-all and a conceited one at that. While he can back it up with the knowledge he does possess, he can get a bit aggravating at times, explaining things as if he is the smartest person in the room... and in line with his motor mouth. The longer he talks about a subject, the more it can turn into incessant rambling about the most specific and sometimes frivolous details about a subject. At the very least, he can be useful as an encyclopedia, but good luck getting him to shut up when he gets going.
When it comes to battling, he displays a smidgen of emotion but not much. His bluntness is replaced with a more intense and acute sharpness as he puts every thing and anything into focusing on the battle to the point where anything else could be nothing but white noise most of the time. He is analytical to a fault, taking note of his own knowledge of his opponent, how they act in the midst of battle, calculating, dissecting, and acting on it with cold precision, much like a surgeon. Does he know what he's doing when it comes to most battles? Yes. Does he enjoy them? Relatively unknown to most people, though if he did lose he'd probably appear more sullen and vexed more than usual.
While it is hard to get a reaction out of Yuu, there are a handful of things that can put him off-guard. For starters, he seems to get along with Pokémon better than people and is a lot more friendlier to them. Yes, it is possible to get Yuu to smile, at least briefly when it comes to his pokéfriends, and can cause a bit of a mood whiplash when around other people who seem to only see the meticulously cold side to him. There also is a handful of people who can cause him to disperse with his regular attitude and seemingly get him to act fairly differently, though those are far and few between. Oh, and he has horrendous stage fright; wouldn't be able to act or perform on stage, let alone a contest to save his own life and would more than likely stumble over his words as much as his own two feet if forced into one.
Backstory:
"What would you do if you were born into a monumental legacy that was constantly building itself up, piling up more and more extraordinary achievements and grandeur tales that could be forever immortalized in legends? You'd probably be proud and maybe a bit overwhelmed... hell, maybe you'd be excited to leave your own mark and leave an impression worthy of your family name."
"... but what if you couldn't even do that? What if you didn't even think yourself worthy of even being a footnote because all your life you've been nothing but a huge screw up, failing to do even the most basic of things and even hurting someone dear to you? Do you feel like you'd be worthy of any of it?"
Yuu would rather speak little of his past, though he can't exactly change who he is by blood. He was conceived and born in Sinnoh to quite some exceptional folk; they were nothing to special, with his father being a member of the Elite Four who crushed anyone who faced him in battle and a beautiful pink-haired mother who was a world-famous Pokémon coordinator who turned heads in the limelight as much as she did judge them when not on the stage. He was the second child when it came to the two and he had an older sister who seemed to dote on him as much as tease him, yet the two did get along quite well.
Regardless, the two children were no strangers to the spotlight when it shone on their family, whether it came through interviews with his father and they were featured on it or when they were brought to watch their mother dazzle the audience, they ended up being fussed over one way or another, being adorable children that might grow up to be like their parents when they were older. His older sister always seemed to enjoy basking in the limelight and ate it all up, but Yuu was much a shyer child and always tried to avoid having the attention on him.
Of course due to being a kid and being surrounded by all these bigger people it was always difficult to avoid being thrust into the public eye, even more so when he was put into the same private school as his older sister. It was a little nerve wracking being peppered with all of these questions from all these children, but over time he eventually got used to it all and even began to make a couple of friends... or so he thought. Still to Yuu they liked being around him and he liked hanging around them in turn.
However his own infamy was about to extend when it came to school where he seemed to excel in almost anything. Whether it was his precise knowledge of Pokémon that came as a result of his love for studying and learning more about them to his sharp and adaptable mind when it came to starting Pokémon battles as it was to quickly ending them. He ended up lauded with small amounts of praise and in truth he found a new way to interact with other people, often talking vastly about his own skills, what he did in each battle, how cool it was when it came to these things, and so on.
While charming in its own right, it eventually came grating to his friends and the other students in his class who became annoyed at this posturing. In truth, Yuu was a bit of an unintentional braggart and didn't realize this, nor did he realize that this was slowly pushing away his friends, eventually resulting in there being none. This realization finally hit him when in the midst of a battle with another trainer, the other kids began to cheer against him and even booed the young Yuu when he won. Of course that ended up being rectified by the teacher fairly quickly, but this sudden whiplash in attitude made Yuu realize that he was all alone.
Yuu did have some friends, but the best of them were of the fair-weather variety and would sooner diss him to save their own skin over sticking up for him. Sure, sometimes he'd be bullied, but it didn't sting as much as the lack of true companionship amongst his peers, something he craved above anything else. Slowly he'd become less and less better at things he normally would excel at. A question he could answer with no issue would 'confuse' him and he became less and less exceptional at battles, sometimes going as far as to just throw some matches completely.
Yet nothing would change, aside from the words used to tease and put him down as he would continue to steadily tank his performance in school, further and further, in some vain attempt to regain the friends he had before. At the end of the year this had some of his counselors concerned and talked to him about it, spelling out how he was a bright child and all sorts of blandishments he could care less about. His parents, while figuring out what was going on, did their best to console Yuu and attempt to steer him off this destructive path, but it would be to no avail.
In spite of this, one person would be able to break through this behavior, this box he consigned himself to when the family traveled to Kalos. It was something the entire side of his mother's family did every year where they would meet up at the family estate and have this grand gala and interact with one another to see how everyone was doing. Yuu despising it was an understatement and dreaded going to it, more so this following year due to his failure of a school life.
Like always he kept away from most people and kept quiet for most of the time he had there. Of course by chance he managed to spot someone in a similar vein to him: far away from most of the other relatives and nose deep within a book. Curious, the young boy ended up walking towards her, being sure to dodge any sort of social interaction he could before saddling himself right next to her and began reading alongside her.
On the plus side she didn't seem to mind his presence which was good!... at least until he started chattering about different facts and listing off extra bits of information that weren't shown in the book. Of course successfully reading a book was one thing, but reading the room was not exactly his forte and ended up irritating the girl who ended up making a snide comment about how his friends must think he's fun at school.
The remark went way over his head as he responded in great detail about how he did have friends but how they would usually abandon him when things got rough with bullying, as well as what he did to try and regain those lost friendships. In truth he couldn't tell this was making her more and more irate, but not for the reasons one would expect from a young kid bothering someone who wanted to be left alone.
Instead she stopped reading, much to his chagrin, and and straight up yelled at him over his lack of spine. This caught Yuu off-guard as she began to list off how terrible those people were, as well as how she'd introduce those people to her fist and how Yuu should probably do so as well. The nervous and demure look he gave her told her all she needed to know and in a spur of the moment she decided that she'd teach him how to stand up for himself and not let anyone push him around.
That was an interesting month for certain as Yuu would meet up with the girl, who he now learned was his older cousin by about three years, who began straightening out Yuu's rather meek demeanor by not only telling him how to act, but also leading by example at times. Also helped she was basically getting into scuffles and wrestling the young boy whenever they were out of sight of their more prestige lineage to show him how to physically stick up for himself if his bullies decided to get a little more physical with him. Of course this was also intertwined with large amounts of reading and studying, which Yuu gleefully joined her in on.
To Yuu, she basically made this whole meet up with the entire family tree go from absolutely dreadful to something manageable so long as he was hanging out with her. Of course on one of the days when they were reading something together, a question came to mind: why did she try so hard? Yuu always noticed she was giving more than 100% whenever they were together and was merely curious about why his older cousin did what she did.
Her answer? To be recognized, acknowledged and be liked by others and even be friends with her. There was a somber silence during that all in which neither of them seemed to read that book, just sitting there, together until Yuu broke the silence with six simple words:
"Then... may we please.... be friends?"
This left his cousin silent before she asked why? Why? Because to him she was quite amazing already and found her to be a nice and caring person despite the harsh interaction with him during helping him out, mentioning a few things he liked about her such as how strong willed she is and admitted that he wished he could be like her. He admitted that he enjoyed studying with her, that she was really the only person that managed to make these yearly meet ups with their entire family bearable, and that he liked her for her, as well as stating that he was never really good with people either.
This was probably one of the happiest memories he could be left with at that age and before each family would go their separate ways, she left some parting words to him: that she wanted to hear that Yuu decked those jerks in the schnozz when they next saw each other. Sure, his cousin got a bit of an earful for that, but so did Yuu when he reciprocated her encouragement with a thumbs up and shouted back that he would. He could remember the smile on her face, as well as feeling his own as they both left the estate and returned back to their daily lives.
A year later when the next family gathering came around, she'd get to hear all about it, about how difficult it was for him to adapt to her lessons at first before his first triumph, even if it was small. About how Yuu was getting comfortable with himself again and slowly began to not care about what those bullies had to say. They were dumb jerks obviously and wish they could be as good as him as he began to rise to the top of his class once again. Some of them got infuriated and tried to escalate the bullying to cut him down, and even began getting physical with Yuu.
He snuck a picture with him to show off to his cousin with a huge smile on his face, showing off the black eye he got before telling her that those other bullies got it worse thanks to the moves she taught him... both parties also might of gotten suspended for a week as well, but for the most part the bullying stopped when he returned, assuming the position of a top ranked student and trainer of his class. That was a fun family meet up that year, especially whenever they started sneaking away to either explore, study more, or even do a bit of wrestling.
However on one of those years Yuu and his family would miss the Kalos Family Get Together as a result of not only the Sinnoh Championships having a much higher turnout of trainers than usual, but the large influx of coordinators undertaking different types of contests at the Super Contest Hall, as well as having their mother participate in the biggest contest event of that year. So instead their dad suggested to send them over to Unova to stay with his younger brother and his family for the summer instead.
Specifically Castelia City. The towering architecture wowed the young Yuu as it was like nothing he had seen before. Sure there were plenty of huge buildings in Kalos and Sinnoh, but not on a scale as grand as this one with each Skyscraper overlooking the city streets and something new to be discovered around every corner. It was honestly a blast exploring this place with his sister, but nothing could compare to Relic Castle.
Yuu read about the mythos surrounding it and was more the ecstatic to head there and delve into the ruins to see what the place look like, take in the grand and ancient architecture that one of the twin heroes created. While both him and his sister were told not to wander too far away from them, one of the siblings only adhered to this warning. The first time Yuu did this he looked for an opening between a bunch of people nearby and snuck away from his aunt and older sister while they weren't watching. Thankfully nothing bad happen despite how dumb this would be and he made it out into Route 4 with nothing but an xtranceiver he and his sister received from their uncle and aunt to stay in contact, as well as a bottle of water.
He might of had to turn the former off for a bit due to the ludicrous amount of calls he received from his sister, but regardless he managed to make his way to the desert resort and, thanks to the abundance of research he did, was able to navigate his way to Relic Castle with little to no issue. Of course when he was inside he was dazzled by the place, instantly poring over any sort of design and markings he found, as well as any sorts of small relics or trinkets he managed to find.
After some time, he eventually turned a corner and saw her: a pale girl with brown hair who looked to be a year younger than him looking up at a mural in the ruins with the same amount of interest he had, possibly more. Out of curiosity he went up to the young girl and instead of striking up a conversation with her stared up and studied the mural. He didn't know how long they stood together in that vast ruin without breaking the silence, but it must of been hours before she ended up moving on, with him following after her like a lost Rockruff.
Yuu ended up learning plenty of things about the ruins during this time and made a mental note to bring a notebook as he ended up inadvertently walking back to the city with the young girl. Of course upon arrival he was scooped up into his aunts arms and was getting a concerned look from his uncle and younger sister. However while that was going on, Yuu was looking around the city streets to see where that other girl went. He couldn't find her.
Yuu expected that to be the last time he would ever see her since he figured she wouldn't pop up at Relic Castle again. Yes, despite the scolding he got after that and the worried warnings he received Yuu proceeded to go off back towards the Desert Resort and Relic Castle. While it was plenty more difficult this time, he managed to find a way to sneak off and managed to make his way to the ruins once more, this time with more preparation.
He did the usual, making sure to navigate the ruins and start from where he last left off while drawing a map and making notes about the place, jotting down any bit of information he could glean from the crumbling castle. Strangely enough he ended up encountering the girl again, but this time she was examining the layout of a room, or more specifically the worn out furnishings, if it could even be called that at this point, in there. Like last time, Yuu would end up joining her in observing the place, taking note of what this room could of been used for before moving on to study more of the ruins. The same freak out that happened when they both finished exploring ensued.
At this point he began making more frequent trips to Relic Castle after managing to get his aunt and uncle to relent and travel there so long as he stopped turning off his xtranceiver whenever he went out there. Whenever he was there, Yuu would always manage to find that same girl overlooking and appraising something different in those ruins. And in turn he would always join her. Eventually he worked up the courage to say something to her and she in turn told him to get lost, but this didn't dissuade Yuu, nor did she ever really try to ditch him either.
The summer flew by as he spent a majority of his time exploring Relic Castle and spending time with that mystery girl, looking through each nook in cranny and learning more and more about the place, what its people were like, and so on. On the final day when he was heading back with her he finally broached another question: what was her name. She remained quiet for a few minutes as they walked, keeping Yuu unsure if she ignored his question or was contemplative of it. Just before they entered Castelia City she would tell him.
Yuu would never forget it nor would he forget her, and gave her his name before promising her that he'd come back next summer and requested if she could meet him at the gates to Route 4 when he arrived. Those days would be forever etched into his memories because of his first, true friend. And of course Yuu would make due on his promise. Sure, it took a lot of pleading and begging to go to Unova again, even going the extra mile in school, as well as excelling in any sort of extracurricular activities he could participate in. Eventually they relented after seeing how motivated Yuu was, much more than usual and let him go.
Of course the following day after he stepped off and got settled down with his aunt and uncle, as well as spending some family time together with them and their new baby he was off to Route 4. As soon as Yuu arrived, he saw a familiar girl standing by the entrance and broke out in a dash towards her waving to her and jubilantly yelling out her name with the biggest smile on his face. Once he joined up with her, the duo went off to Relic Castle once again. That silence between the two would speak louder than words.
The next summer Yuu wasn't able to head out to Unova, but forewarned his friend in advance about this, explaining to her about the whole Family Meet Up in Kalos and how they decided to have it this summer. Thankfully she was a bit understanding though Yuu thought she looked a bit sad about that all; at the very least he did promise to try and come back next summer if he could.
And, of course, he was able to head out to Unova for the third time once again, finding his best friend in the ruins before she began meeting up with him at the gate to Route 4. However, tragedy was about to strike on one of the few days when the duo were traversing through Relic Castle. To Yuu it was all a blur, between the haggard breathing, the yelling through his xtranceiver, the burning of his lungs, and the scene of his best friend and abject horror on her face as she was sucked into some quicksand burned into his skull.
Some of the authorities and Pokémon Rangers were quick to arrive to investigate the reports of this missing girl, with his uncle coming to get the young Yuu to try and comfort him. However that comfort mattered little to him with her on his mind: was she still alive, how was she doing, please survive. There were more intrusive thoughts going through his head each passing day. He hated every second of it and would even make attempts to go out to Relic Castle to try and find her. Yuu wanted to save his best friend. Even if he was stopped by his relatives or escorted back by the rangers, he never stopped. Because she meant the world to him.
Eventually a week passed and they found the girl and quickly extracted her from the ruins and took her to the hospital to do any sort of check-ups. Yuu ended up learning about this and ended up visiting her as one of her friends to see how she was doing. She seemed... different than the last time they met; she was way more talkative than before, always speaking in a peculiar matter, and was strangely accompanied by a Yamask. Of course the two would talk for a bit, but he always couldn't get that Pokémon, that single Yamask, out of his mind.
During this time Yuu recalled something he learned during school about ghost type Pokémon, specifically Yamask. Yuu began to investigate this whole situation further, sifting through what he learned in school, as well as reading up on Pokémon at one of the city's libraries. And then it hit him and he was awash with terror and worry. His mind was a muddled mess and that self-same intellect that allowed him to discover the supposed change in his best friends behavior would ultimately be his downfall.
A few days after she was released from the hospital Yuu would end up meeting his friend and confronting her about the incident that had transpired, prodding and interrogating her about what happened. Of course she led with cryptic messages and was generally acting a lot more childish. It didn't help that she was accompanied by the Yamask as well, especially when he saw that the mask it was carrying looked eerily similar to he own face. At that point his own heart sunk, his questions more emotionally charged and closer to pleading, her answers more playful, enigmatic, and unhelpful. Yuu was scared and frightened at this new girl, scared of the change, scared that there was some unknown soul inhabiting her body while she was stuck as a Yamask.
Yuu messed up and ended up fracturing that friendship he had cultivated with her over these past years. The rest of that summer was miserable and nothing seemed to be able to shake Yuu out of his funk, his depressed state. And before he knew it summer vacation was over as Yuu flied back to Sinnoh. Once again he was truly friendless, bitter, alone, empty. Yuu never got the chance to reconcile with her.
Yuu struggled to find the same motivation, the same joy he did when learning about Pokémon or winning in battles, drifting listlessly as the world continued to move on without him, whether it was his sister and cousin starting their own journey in their respective regions or the new discoveries being made. He knew he couldn't stay stagnant forever and thus took to Abigail's advice once again to make his heart nothing but steel.
He shouldn't let this affect him, whatever she said didn't matter at all, he was fine without her. Yuu didn't care, or at least that's what he would tell himself. Yuu didn't care, he would say as he went back to Unova for the fourth time. Yuu didn't care, he would say as he found himself ambling towards Relic Castle. Yuu didn't care, he would say as he listlessly wandered through the ruins, searching for and failing to find her again.
Yuu could tell himself all he wanted that he didn't care, but the reality was that he obviously did, even going so far as to blame himself for how he lashed out on that fateful day. The reality was that he couldn't steel and harden his heart no matter how hard he tried. And it hurt.
Time would continue to unremorsefully forge ahead just as he would continuously try to do so as well. It would eventually all came to a head at the next Kalos Family Gathering where Yuu, for the most part was left alone to stew and brood; he couldn't even indulge in his cousin's antics alongside her since she wasn't even there to begin with this year... which made this gathering more unbearable than normal. It didn't help that he began hearing things about everyone, what each and every person there had accomplished.
What did he even manage to accomplish? Sure, he graduated at the top of his class, but that didn't really mean much to him. After all his dad was still an extremely tough member of the Sinnoh Elite Four and his mom was still a judge and coordinator of huge renown. His sister and cousin had also managed to accomplish much over these past few years, with his sister establishing her own fashion brand in Kalos and his cousin being a runner-up in the Indigo League, basically becoming the second strongest trainer in those regions.
What did he have to show for all this? The only things that came to mind was alienating himself from most of the people at his school and ruining his friendship with someone he cherished. To him, he deserved five stars for being a Grade-A fuck up. He couldn't take it, this agonizing reminder of his substandard "accomplishments." Yuu wanted out, to be as far away from everyone and everything he once knew.
That fervent wish of his would be granted the following year when his mother returned after she had finished guest staring as a judge and coordinator in a far off region known as Eidda. She had brought home numerous souvenirs as well as a few pamphlets about the region. Most of it was advertisements, but one particular one managed to catch his eye. An advertisement about how a Pokémon Professor named Camphor was looking to hire trainers to help her with her research.
Yuu did further research, discovering that she was specifically investigating the flood of nonindigenous Pokémon that began occupying the region. There was a spark in his eye as he began scrambling to sign up. This job was perfect for him! The Eidda region was much farther away from most other regions he frequented and was the perfect place to just leave everything behind. Sure he'd help out, but for the most part Yuu just wanted to get away from everything, and leave it all behind.
Once he submitted the application, he figured it would take some time before he was either accepted or rejected by the professor and was about to begin prepping to head out to Eidda... well, before he received an e-mail less than five minutes later that he was hired for the job, along with the details of when he needed to arrive there, what to expect, etc. Yuu... did not expect them to get back to him that fast, but he wasn't one to complain.
After all, he now had an out.
Quirks/Talents/Aspirations/Other:
- Yuu seems to be overly analytical to the point where he might just be dead silent, staring at something for minutes to end. A hint to when he's in this state? See if he's biting the tip of his thumb. - Yuu seems to be extremely competitive when it comes to battling, but doesn't seem to show it all that well, even seeming quite reserved when faced with a loss. However, if one looked a little bit closer they'd be able to spot signs of agitation. - While he admittedly does like Ghost type Pokémon, there is a certain species of Ghost type that seems to leave him with a relative sense of unease and dread. - Has a terrible amount of stage fright and would freeze up the moment he would have to perform in front of a crowd; the reason he does fine with battles is due to him putting all of his effort into the fight, essentially tunnel-visioning it. - Yuu is physically fit and quite durable in spite of his lanky appearance. It probably has to do with wrestling his cousin and her Pokémon. Whether he's beaten them in a fight... no comment. - Knows a bit of martial arts and can easily defend himself in a scuffle; he totally didn't learn this from being turned into a pretzel by his older cousin. - He is a battling protegé and seems to pick up quite quickly on certain things when in a fight, as well as come up with strategies on the fly. - Analytical to a fault, he seems to be extremely informed and well learned when it comes to Pokémon, to the point where he could potentially be used as a living Pokédex. - In spite of his strengths when it comes to being a trainer, he seems to prefer to put more time and effort into studying Pokémon and attempting to learn something new about them every day. - Yuu loves to study about mythology and is generally fascinated by the stories, as well as what can be gleaned from them. This, of course, goes hand in hand with also wishing to learn more about past cultures and how these stories came to be.
Favorite Kind of Pokémon:
"Favorite kind of Pokémon? Bit of a complicated question if you ask me. That depends on a multitude of factors, such as typing, how a Pokémon is viewed by a person versus how they actually act, certain traits such as tough and strong or pretty and beautiful, and so on."
"For the more complex side of things, I have no true preference. Each Pokémon has their own intricacies, personalities, hopes, dreams, strengths, flaws, etc. I will not do a disservice to those Pokémon and myself to favor one trait over the other."
"Admittedly, I do have a bit of an aversion to... some Pokémon, but I digress. If it simply had to do with typing, I prefer Psychic, Ghost, Fairy, Dark, Fighting, and Steel types. Quite the handful, I know..."
"You can blame my cousin for my preference of the latter two."
Pokémon
Current Team:
Jojo the Riolu | Lvl 5
Pokémon Caught:
Species: Riolu Type: Fighting Gender: Male Level: 5 Moves: Quick Attack, Endure, Feint, Metal Claw, Bullet Punch Ability: Inner Focus. Jojo's pure drive prevents him from flinching, as well as stops him from being Intimidated by other Pokémon. This will not prevent flinching when using Focus Punch. Held Item: N/A
Personality | Jolly: In spite of this Riolu's happy-go-lucky nature, he can be quite an independent pokemon, happily poking his nose where it doesn't belong and generally being an optimistic nuisance. He generally likes to interact with any sort of pokemon, regardless of their size and disposition, whether its a large Nidoking with a big dopey heart, or a mischievous Natu that likes to prank and mess around with other pokemon and people. In general, he just seems to enjoy life to the fullest and seems to approach every new day with a jolly, little smile. In hindsight, it is a bit ironic that a pokemon like him was saddled with a melancholic trainer, yet the duo seem to enjoy each others company in spite of it.
Appearance: Risette gives off a decidedly cool, confident, and collected demeanor. Standing at 5'10, she's a bit taller then most women, a pale complexion, dark blue eyes, and dressed in 'Cool and elegant' as she puts it clothing often consisting of a black leather jacket, shorts perhaps a bit too short, crop top, gloves, and knee length stockings and a durable pair of boots. Ah, of course, and cant forget her sunglasses that yes, she wears indoors. Wears an expensive perfume that smells faintly of vanilla.
Personality: A cool, determined beauty that has more confidence in her pinky then others have in their body. If Risette wants to do something, she'll do it. If she doesn't know how, she'll figure it out. If people tell her she cant do something, she'll prove them wrong and do it as stylishly as possible. And to those things and people she thinks are 'hers' be they friend or otherwise, she'll do anything for. To say she can be rather troublesome from this is a bit of an understatement. Unreasonable to an extreme degree if she doesn't get her way, and doesn't like taking no for any kind of an answer - she will get what she wants even if she has to take a less direct route to getting it.
That isn't to say shes unpleasant, though, or malicious. She can not stand those who harm the weak or bully others needlessly. She might criticize or end up saying something someone doesn't want to hear, but she's not the type to linger on grudges or words. One could say she's just extremely socially inept and insensitive when it comes to more delicate topics - and may also assume that someone who she had just berated or beat to a bloody pulp to get something she wanted earlier will a hundred percent have the same mindset.
Backstory: Born and raised in Eidda, specifically Giervor. The rainy, slightly gloomy town that constantly has something going on. If Byjerlfal is Eidda's shiny jewel, Giervor was its dark underbelly. Being the daughter of the Gym leader meant being born with certain expectations. To be strong, sturdy, and to be clever and of course, being able to stand out in a crowd.
This turned Risette into a rather troublesome kid. Picking fights because she wanted to win. Being wealthy enough and having extremely casual parenting to allow her to buy or do whatever she wanted with said money? She caused quite a few problems growing up - getting expelled from both major trainer shcools in Giervor for 'gross misconduct' (Why fight with a pokemon when my fists do the job just fine?), getting in trouble for spending too much money.
Not that her father particularly cared too much. He doted on her way too much and absolutely did not care. Between Gym Leader duties and work at the Archaeological society, he was happy to let her do as she whimed.
And sometime, she found a kid being bullied. Well, Giervor was hers, wasn't it? At least, thats how she was, no? And the only one allowed to beat up or bully someone was her. So she sent those bad guys packing with her fists, and thus, Risette would meet Scarlett - her soon to be best friend.
The rest of her life is fairly mundane. She worked with her dad at the Archaelogical society, spent some time helping out around the gym. Some rumors say she has connections to some less than reputable organizations in the city, but its Giervor. The city basically is where all the bad guys like to gather, and everyone knows someone likely up to no good in the end.
Eventually though, she would want her own chance at traveling across Eidda. Of course, she had money and could easily just do it herself without going through the hassle of meeting Camphor, but Camphor and her dad were old friends, so why not put good old fashioned Nepotism to use? Scarlett decided to tag along because she didn't wanna be left out.
Quirks/Talents/Aspirations/Other: -Extremely into Eidda's history, especially relating to the Three Titans and Giervors underground. -Hopes to one day succeed her dad as gym leader and to make a huge historical discovery at some pont. -Also hopes that she can clean Giervor up of all those rats running and scurrying around. People love using those old tunnels and the underground for illicit activities. -Loves her motorcycle. you break it, Scarlett breaks your spine.
Favorite Kind of Pokémon: Cool. Determined. Confident. Pokemon who someone can look at and be like 'yeah, they fuckin cool'
Appearance: Long red hair, an athletic build, amber eyes that study everything around her with seeming mischievous or predatory intent, Scarlett gives off a distinctly more scary, or aggressive vibe then Risette does. Dressed similarly to her friend, often sporting leather jackets, t-shirt, a choker that hides a scar along her neck from an old injury that also rendered her mute, down to her stockings and boots.
Personality: Scarlett, is best described as a 'hedonistic beast'. Lazy, gluttonous, hates doing anything other than lazing about and stuffing her face with food, scaring people, and generally being a mild nuisance. If she could sleep all day and do nothing, she'd absolutely do it.
The only reason she doesn't - is Risette.
After more or less saving her from bullies who were making fun of her because she couldn't speak from her injury, she has been attached to Risette's hip. Going everywhere with her, tagging along whether Risette wanted her too or not - even going so far as to moving in with her later in life. She can be surprisingly timid around other people, and often tends to keep to herself and doesn't interact with other folks all that much unless approached first, and even then, she'll slightly glare and internally be wanting them to just leave her alone.
But if Risette asks her to do something? She'd go to hell and back, if she had too.
Backstory: Scarlett isn't a pokemon trainer. She's just here to tag along with Risette because she didn't want to stay cooped up at home alone, or stuck doing work she had no interest in. As for her own history? There's nothing much to mention here. She never really knew her own parents that well, they disappeared in the forests around Giervor. Of course, and the whole being attacked by a vicious Pokémon that left her permanently scarred and her voice lost.
She doesn't like talking about herself much, either. Not that she can. She only talks with Risette really. Sign language or otherwise.
Quirks/Talents/Aspirations/Other: -Find whatever happened to her parents -Protect Risette -Never work properly a day in her life.
Favorite Kind of Pokémon: The kind that dont make a lot of noise or irritate her

Name: Kashima Ryuuichi (鹿島 竜一) Gender: Male Age: 18 Hometown: Hau'oli City, Alola
Appearance (Link to Other Pictures): Ryuu is a bit on the taller side, standing around 6'1". He is also on the fairly lankier side as well, weighing around 160 when wet. He appears athletic, but doesn't actually have much musculature to his frame. If anything, he might be almost borderline under weight for a young man of his age and height.
Several years of indoor living have made his skin a bit paler than most. He also doesn't sleep much. This is made evident by the circles one can see around his eye whenever it just so happens to be visible. His long, unkempt blonde hair is long enough to cover even his eye. He has long since stopped combing it and a mass of tangles and split ends shows that he doesn't maintain it well either with the exception of washing it.
Said blonde hair covers two things on his face. The first is a dull, listless, blue eye. The other is a white eyepatch he wears that covers where an eye should be. The eyepatch's plain, white, circular design make it look more like an eyepatch made for medical purposes. It definitely is not the kind of eyepatch one would wear if they fancied dressing as a pirate.
Ryuuichi's outfits focus on what is practical and comfortable. He doesn't really care much for color coordination or style. Hence his go to is often shirts and jeans with the occasional jacket. Thankfully his parents bought him enough of a similar outfit to ensure that he would never be too much of a walking fashion disaster. The colors his clothes possess are usually plain colors like beige, white, navy, or brown. Nothing too elaborate or extravagant.
There is one singular part of his ensemble that is always consistent though: a necklace. Looped onto this necklace are what appear to be three small scales from the "Scaly Pokemon". If he ever moves quickly or roughly enough, sometimes these scales will click and clang softly together on the necklace. Regardless of whatever he happens to wear on a particular day, for the past 4 years he has never once failed to go without this accessory.
Personality: Fiery, confident, and curious. These three words were once often used to describe Ryuuichi four years ago. Ryuuichi loved to explore and he never backed down from any challenge. He had the utmost faith in himself as well to the point where it often bordered on arrogance as a matter of fact. He wanted to do everything and try everything. Whenever he picked something up, he also believed he was destined to be the best at it.
When he finally found something he was truly interested in seeing through to the end though? His passion and drive were like a blazing inferno. His parents name for him, meaning dragon, was not misplaced. This includes the hobby he eventually picked up or helping others. Ryuuichi may have been loud and obnoxious, but that didn't mean he was rude. He was always more than happy to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it.
Ryuuichi loved to tackle problems head on. He wasn't stupid by any means, he just never really used his intelligence to its fullest. His idea of problem solving was just try first then ask questions later. If he didn't succeed the first time, it would take him several times trying the same solution before finally trying something else. Ryuuichi, first and foremost, was a man truly driven by his emotions, passions, and ambitions.
Nowadays? That bright fire is mostly snuffed out. Ryuuichi's once bright, fiery expressions are now dull like his singular blue eye. He has become apathetic and despondent. Sometimes it can take him a few moments to actually register that someone is saying something to him. There are times when this is intentional, but also times where he just genuinely doesn't notice. He is also far more softspoken than he used to be.
He takes things slowly now, far moreso than before. Rather than let his emotions and passions guide him, he tries to actually use his brain. He tries to parse things out logically, wanting to do his best to plan things out to their fullest before even daring to give them a try.
Ryuuichi nowadays is deathly afraid of two things after all: Failure and his own "recklessness".
Dreams: Ryuuichi loved to try many things and go through many things. This lasted until he one day found what he finally believed to be his true calling: Art. Specifically though animation! He loved to draw and his favorite thing to draw was, much to his parent's chagrin, explosive scenes of battles between Pokemon. The bigger, louder, and more impactful the battle the better.
Through his drawing, he wanted to bring these scenes he put on his pages to life on the big screen. So his goal was to become the greatest comic artist who would eventually get their work animated. He realized this dream at the age of 11 and became quite skilled at drawing in just three years. He had also begun to learn how to animate as well on a tablet purchased for him by his parents.
Now he just wants to make it to the next day.
"Be careful. Vast Poni Canyon is dangerous this time of year!"
Those were the last words Kashima Ryuuichi, often called "Ryuu" by close friends, saw his mother say to him. He had been to Vast Poni Canyon many times before, so he just gave her a thumbs up as he ran towards the harbor.
Ryuu loved going around Alola to record Pokémon wild Pokémon, specifically whenever they battled. Trainer battles were cool, but to Ryuuichi seeing wild Pokémon battle each other was legendary. Why did they fight? Territory? Instincts? Food? Grudges? He was no Pokémon researcher so he didn't know.
Instead he often made up stories in his own head about why they fought whenever he saw them. His favorite Pokémon though was "the Scaly Pokémon": Kommo-o and its evolutions. The way they brandished their fists. The way their scales clanked with each punch. Their explosive roars. Their fiery auras! It was seeing this Pokémon fight a Machoke on his first visit to Vast Poni Canyon that gave him his dream. Not just to draw Pokémon, but to truly bring them to life on the big screen.
Now Ryuuichi was headed to that place once again. Kommo-o are very rare Pokémon though and, despite going for three years every weekend to that canyon he had only seen its first evolution a handful of times. He had yet to see an actual Kommo-o since that faithful day.
"Today is DEFINITELY gonna be different though. I can feel it!" he shouted to himself with a large grin as he arrived at the canyon entrance. There were definitely more Pokémon than usual on this particular day. His hand holding his camera was already twitching from his palpable excitement.
It took a few hours of moving carefully before he finally found just what it was he was looking for: a Jangmo-o. It may have only been the first evolution, but he loved it just as much as the final form. He also knew that whenever a Jangmo-o showed up, the chance of seeing a Kommo-o was above 0%. It was also fighting! The small scaly dragon was standing strong, yet hurt, against a rather imposing Boldore. Its back seemed to be against the canyon wall. Ryuuichi couldn't help but feel concerned... and excited! Surely a Kommo-o would show up soon right? Before Ryuuichi even realized it, he was already recording.
Just as Ryuuichi hoped, the Jangmo-o soon cried out for help. This caused not just one, but TWO Kommo-o to show up. Needless to say, Ryuuichi was over the moon! Of course, the Boldore also called for reinforcements. Soon it was an earth shattering, explosive battle between three Boldore and two Kommo-o. Ryuuichi was so absorbed on recording that he didn't even realize he was getting closer. He wanted to see it. To feel it. To hear it. All from close by. In his mind, only by getting closer and experiencing these sensations close up could he get closer to his dream of recreating this impact in his pages and on people's screens. Unfortunately for this aspiring animator, he had gotten... too close.
The Pokémon all noticed him. In this moment, the Kommo-o both faced him as Ryuuichi was closer to them than he was the Boldore. This distraction gave the Boldore the perfect opening. A Rock Slide. An Earthquake. The canyon face began to collapse as rocks fell and the earth shook. The Kommo-o were both powerful enough to endure and get out of the way. The Jangmo-o, however; was not.
*clak*
The camera fell to the ground. Ryuuichi lunged without thinking. His hands grabbed and tried to throw that scaly body.
The last thing he saw was rocks. Rocks smashing down on him... and that small scaly Pokémon.
He could hear it. Noble Roars of fury, powerful explosions, and a never ending clanking of scales.
Yet the pain and darkness drowned it all out. No matter how powerful they were, they couldn't stop him from being consumed by the darkness. Yet... for a moment he could have sworn he... saw something right before he was swallowed up.
He remained in darkness. Even when he felt himself awakening, he remained in darkness. In the darkness he sat as he heard his parents' choked sobs. The darkness continued to remain as the doctors told him that he had lost one eye completely while his other had been damaged beyond repair by small rocks that had gotten in.
Yet those words, those terms, sailed right over his head. Only one thing was on his mind.
"W...Where is the... Jangmo-o...?" he asked.
He couldn't see it... but he felt it. Even before the doctor could say anything... Ryuuichi felt it. A movement of something. It seemed like the shaking of a head. A turbulence of... negativity?
Tears began to flow down the right side of his bandaged face.
"There was... nothing remaining. I'm sorry" said the doctor.
Already he reached out his hand, where his father's hand had been reaching out to him.
"You were holding these at the time..." his father said, placing three rough objects in that already outstretched hand.
They were three scales.
Wailing filled the room after that as Ryuuichi clutched them tightly in his barely working hand. Yet despite being only surrounded by darkness... he could still somehow feel the light of his parents by his bedside.
State of the art medical care and rehabilitation had been expensive. Alola couldn't really provide the best of these things either, so his family had moved to Byjerlfal in the Eidda region. It is thanks to the great care he received there that slowly, but surely, Ryuu's body was repaired.
The Alolan doctors stated that there was a high chance he would never be able to walk again, yet in just two years he had recovered in every way... with one exception. His eyes. No matter what, the one that remained couldn't be fixed and one of them had been completely taken out. He'd have to wear an eyepatch for the rest of his life.
"What best animator? Number one Kommo-o lover? More like number one Jangmo-o killer..." These words flooded his mind every day. They dragged him further down into the darkness. He wanted to let it swallow him up, yet it couldn't. Every time he tried to lose himself to it... he felt two lights that over the past few years had grown more powerful.
The coming of these lights were always followed by voices on the other side of his door. His parents. He could feel them. He knew they were coming even when he plugged his ears. Yet it was only in brief flashes when he focused.
The existence of those strong lights kept the darkness at bay. He hated it. So he tried to get the lights to go away via other means. Distracting himself seemed to work. So long as he didn't focus, the lights didn't appear. So long as the lights didn't appear... could he just forget everything. Be blind to everything.
"Damn lights... why don't you just--" began a listless Ryuuichi as he sat on his bed with his tablet. He had just turned 18. His parents had gotten him a new tablet complete with special controls and access functions that could read stuff on the screen for him. It was just like his computer that could do the same thing.
"Thanks I guess..." had been his response to them. It made him feel sick. Yet he was used to it. It was his attempt to get those lights to go away. To let him be swallowed by the darkness. Now this new tablet was his other form of escaping from the lights.
Yet after saying that and seeing those lights of his parents flicker and dim ever so slightly... it made his fingers tap at the tablet harder. It made him focus on those lights harder. It made the right side of his face wet while the left side of his face ached. He could feel other lights. The lights of their next door neighbors and their Pokémon.
The more he tapped at his tablet, the more he tried to focus on the dark and forget the lights the clearer they got as his focus made them clearer. Each time he sensed those lights it made him remember the Jangmo-o that he saw right before the dark. It also made him remember those Kommo-o.
"DAMMIT, TURN OFF!" he screamed right as he attempted to push the power button. Yet, his finger missed.
Instead it pressed a message notification that appeared.
The darkness returned. Yet silence did not. Hearing it made him remember the last four years of his parent's lights. How they fluctuated at times when his heightened hearing heard them mention money.
"How much... was this..." pondered Ryuuichi as he ran his fingers over the tablet. He couldn't help but think of everything they had done for him. He also couldn't stop himself from grasping those scales hanging from his necklace as if grasping at a possibility.
All it takes is a spark.
A spark so tiny, yet so blinding that, before Ryuuichi even realized it; had him hitting the "submit application" button on a filled out application.
Favorite Kind of Pokémon: --"Passionate, loud, and powerful Pokémon! One's with massive explosive impact!" --"Sturdy Pokémon".
Other: --Ryuu liked video games before, but now he really likes video games. Even if he can't see what's going on in them, just the mindless pressing of buttons helped to distract his mind so he wouldn't focus on the "lights" or the darkness that brings about said lights if he focuses on it. --His favorite game series is the Mario series (which is canon in Pokémon I believe). --Ryuu once wanted to be a Pokemon trainer. He painted a baseball like a Pokeball and attempted to catch a rattata with it. It did not go well. --Whenever Ryuu focuses, he can "sense" other living beings or life as "lights". He isn't really sure what this is and thinks he is going crazy. Sometimes these "lights" fluctuate, dim, or brighten in some circumstances. He can kinda tell when its good or bad. --Ryuu's favorite food is cheeseburgers. --Ryuu is not a fan of Rock type Pokémon. --Ryuu learned how to play guitar, but quit after two months. --Living in Alola surrounded by water meant learning to swim was mandatory, which ie did.He may be no match for a true swimmer, but he can swim well enough to survive.

Quirks/Talents/Aspirations/Other: --This Squirtle wants to roam and travel everywhere. --Koopa is what "Bowser" is called in Japan. As such, this nickname is more of a play on that. No he does not want to kidnap any Princesses.
Appearance: Melissa isn’t tall, topping out at a hair under five feet tall, and tends to prefer cozy clothes, big sweaters and coats, despite being from a rather tropical region….Unless she’s swimming, then it’s down to swimsuit and diving gear. Oh, and she prefers longer skirts! Of course she has quite the wardrobe she mostly left behind.
Personality: Energetic, excitable, and eccentric, Melissa rarely sees things as dull or boring and often makes the best of a situation. If she can’t, things’re definitely bad. She is very much not a competitive person, despite often being good at things, when she puts her mind to it, and so shies away from such things.
Backstory: Melissa is a daughter of man from a family known for it’s business practices, and a talented musician from Sootopolis. Unfortunately, her father is the unsuccessful brother of his generation and a bitter jackass and her mom couldn’t quite stand him once the shine wore off and the grime started showing, so they split. Little Melissa was left largely to her own devices, being bounced between their homes whenever each parent got sick of her (Her father saw her alternatingly as an opportunity and as a symbol of yet another of his failures, and her mother saw her as a reminder of him), which meant she spent her childhood swimming, exploring underwater, reading, and picking up various hobbies and dropping them as her attention wandered. She turned out to be a pretty weird kid, which only alienated her further from her parents….
Though she did sort-of patch things up with her mother as the years went on, her relationship with her father has only ever soured. He’d try to get her to do something, usually for some business scheme or another of his, and if it didn’t match up with her whims and wiles, it’d go poorly, at best. Which is to say it never went well, she didn’t want to be some advertising helper or star, she didn’t want to model, and if she was going to play music, well, it would be to her whims and not some nonsense of his! It got worse as she got older, of course, when his schemes got more bitter and less savory (trying to off the successful brother and his family, for example) and she distanced herself further, staying out later at night to avoid him, when she was stuck at his home.
Which is when the first of a pair of events that changed her course happened. Nothing bad, actually, but walking by the twilit shore one evening, she found a trainer trying to shoo away a little blue Pokemon away, telling it to go live free. She asked why, and the trainer said: “Well, I don’t need her, and otherwise she’d just be stuck in a box or wherever, yeah? Sootopolis is a safeish place for a li’l thing like this to grow up, y’know?” And the trainer sighed, then, turning back to the little Pokemon. “G’wan, you’ll make friends.” It just refused, staying out of the water.
So Melissa said: “Can I have her?” And wow, did that get the trainer’s attention! He turned to face her, and leaned in and looked at her, and went “Hrm.” And then he asked: “Why?”
And she said: “I know what it is to be unwanted.” Somber and still for the first time in a long time.
And the trainer hummed. And nodded, and handed a Pokeball–bog standard red-and-white-with-a-bit-of-black, to her, and looked at the little Pokemon. “Well, you heard her, you’re hers. G’wan.” And the little Pokemon hopped over to Melissa, and stared up at her. And Melissa picked her up, and smiled.
The trainer smiled, too, genuine. “And there ya go. Just remember.” He started. “With a Pokemon, you can go wherever you want.” And he turned and walked off. And Melissa went home, not even paying attention, just holding her new companion, whom she dubbed “Lonitt”
The second event happened right when she got home. Her computer had a weird ad offering a job researching Pokemon someplace far, far, away, and it didn’t take much thought for her to send in her application, pack her things, and be off. Without telling anyone where she was going, of course.
Quirks/Talents/Aspirations/Other: She is almost always in some sort of motion, without even realizing it; where someone else would stand patiently in line, she’d sway from side to side or even spin, and going places? She moves fast! She is a very good swimmer and diver, of course, and likes to make little things. She can sew, she can draw, she can even sing and play a few instruments (Though she’s only good with a piano) She really does like chewing gum. She wants to stay well away from home, and also meet and train/get along with cute Pokemon. Her wishlist looks like some kid’s desires to see Legendary Pokemon and then also a Nosepass and other things like that. Investigating ancient ruins, wherever she can find them.
Favorite Kind of Pokémon: Loves Ghost types and Steel types. Has a preference for cute things, but an odd definition of cute. (For example she thinks near-featureless golems are, in fact, adorable, as is a possessed tree…Actual cute things are invariably seen as not cute, but some variant of cool or such)
