Long ago, when the world was first created, there were 2 deities, the Goddess of Creation, Gaia, and the God of Corruption, Lucifer. After many years of fighting each other, they came up with an agreement. Each of them would make an Oracle, a person of power, and they would have them fight each other to decide whether the world would be peaceful for the next five hundred years or in a constant war. However, the Oracles were still human and often led armies.

Gaia and Lucifer then decided to create Guardians for their Oracles, one more every incarnation. This is the seventh Guardian's year.

How are these oracles chosen, do they have to be on a specific side, and how exactly do they go on to lead armies (do they rise to power, or instantly become a deity in people's eyes like Griffith from Berserk)?

There is no specific side until they fight each other. A good example of an Oracle that lead an army is King Arthur. Merlin was one of his guardians.
