Mikkish paused "What?"

But then he started to understand.

"Ah, yeah. All the time. This world is wrong. I should have been born a millionaire, in a low infestation zone. Then I would never have to flip burgers in a kitchen where those giant 12 legged spiders keep getting in." Mikkish smirked, as he looked in his bag to make sure everything was as he left it. A brief surge of panic hit him. His mind thought of a leather bound book, written in a lost language and untitled, which was his that he would never just give away.

But then he realized there was no book. What book, anyway? He felt stupid, for a second following the momentary panic. It was probably all just a habitual fear from when he lost books back in high school.

"Well good to know at least you wont go through my shit...yet..." Mikkish said to Joe "By the way, ya think the laws here are different? I mean...its owned by a company. The company is a US one, but the island is owned by the company and not the US government directly. And I only ask cuz I wanna see about getting into one of the night clubs around here and take shots. I wonder if the partyin here is crazier with this magic."

I went quiet for a second. Something about this... felt familiar. This guy... frantically looking for something. I shook it off, I'd never met him once in my life. Stop acting silly, Joe.

I didn't know the answer to the question, but, there was something that I could say for certain. "I don't know, but I wouldn't trust them. Something about all of this... it feels off. I mean, I hope that all of this is going to go for the best, but... there's no real good reason to go around teaching people magic. They can say that it's to benefit humanity as a whole... however, it would cut into their profit margins. They would gradually begin losing private contracts with cities to keep them safe since private citizens would be able to deal with pests on such a scale that it would no longer be necessary to hire outside help, and other private companies would be able to get a hold of those with magic to begin taking away business. Offering just as effective service as they do at a far lower price with fewer mercenaries. If we were to try to leave with what we know now, knowing that it's not a bunch of empty promises made by them... I don't think it would end well for us."

"Pfft. Exactly what do you think they are going to do to us that is so horrible? Why do they have us on this island, do you think?" Mikkish laughed at Joe's paranoia.

"Alright, I was going to check out the city a little more thouroughly, but to show you its not so big and scary, why don't you come too?"

I paused for a second and glanced to the side. "I honestly do not know. I... just have a bad feeling about these people." I looked back at him with a blank look at the "big and scary" comment. "I'm not afraid of the city. I can explore it on my own..." Chances are... I probably wouldn't. I mean, I might find a few places that would be of interest, but that'd be about it... I tended to stick to a bit of a routine. Study, train, read for leisure, and maybe go out and explore the wilderness occasionally...

"Eh, okay. Whatever works for you." Mikkish said with a shrug "I'm gonna take a look around."

And with that Mikkish left the room and walked down into the dorms main lobby. He stretched his back a moment, and wondered how a big city like this could have been kept so low key.

He enjoyed the air conditioning for a moment, but then opened the double doors to walk out into the humidity of the island as night fell.

A while after Mikkish left, I felt a bit cramped in the room. I hopped off the bed after retrieving a mystery novel from my luggage. I took my bow and quiver, out of habit. I went downstairs to the sitting area. I sat down on the couch, putting my bow and quiver on the ground, leaning it against the couch. I opened the book and began reading, allowing the world around me to just fade away...

Tamera sat silently in the futuristic-looking helicopter, the engine humming lightly and the blades chopping through the air as they flew. She hadn't spoken a word since she'd left her house that morning. Even as she looked around at the others, she didn't dare say a word. It wasn't like anyone was speaking, though. She could tell that some of them were nervous, some confused, and some maybe even excited. Tamera, however, was still numb; she didn't feel anything. After all, she was only in it for the money. From the looks of the Ad, she knew that she would be paid to attend the school. Hell, she didn't even believe that magic was real, but she knew that money was, and that was all that mattered. Tamera worked day and night as an English teacher, helping adults and, sometimes, their children learn the new language; the majority of the students she taught were immigrants from Spain and Mexico.

She was paid a fair amount of money for the work she did, but it just wasn't enough. She'd attended college, of course, but was now drowning in debt. Also, living in a musty old apartment, struggling to pay the bills, and having to send money to her mother every month all while killing pests every day was definitely starting to take its toll on her. She needed more money. Finally, snapping out of her trance, Tamera grew aware of someone speaking; it was a woman. Whatever she was saying was barely audible, but Tamera strained to listen.

"Magic is real. Magic is real. Gonna be a wizard. Magic is real. Wingardium Leviosa, Hocus Pocus. Magic is real."

Folding her arms across her chest, Tamera let out a sigh and rolled her eyes. The girl was clearly crazy. Wingardium Leviosa? Girl, this ain't Harry Potter. Get it together. Of course, she didn't say this aloud. Even when the girl said some crazy shit about a "weird sex island battle royal." She tuned everything out once again, until a man in an expensive looking suit entered the picture. Another couple of agents began passing around papers, which asked for signatures. Reading over it, Tamera saw that it included being paid while in the program, what benefits they had access to, the risk of injury and death, and notification of what can get someone kicked out of the program which included murder, too much damage to Maniacles property, and GPA falling too low. Tamera was a smart girl, so she knew that she wouldn't have any issues with her GPA. She wasn't a murderer, either. The only thing that really caught her eye was the risk of injury and death.

Death? Tamera thought for a few moments before shrugging her shoulders and signing the paper. Pretty soon, the helicopter was landing, and it was time for them to explore the city. "Welcome to Malficus City," the man in the suit, now known as Matt, said, "found on Malficus Island. Somewhere West of Northern California. The academy is at the other end of the city. Hope you're all in the mood for some sight seeing."

Tamera's eyes widened as she looked around, her jaw dropping momentarily. They'd landed on the roof of a large, tall building; she could see everything from up there. Having grown up in New York, Tamera was used to living in the city, but not a city like this one. As they continued their journey, she saw things that she'd never thought possible. There were people everywhere, some wearing witch or wizard hats, some lighting their cigarettes with flames on the tip of their fingers. They even passed two men who were throwing punches at each other, moving faster than light. It was impossible for a normal human being to move at these speeds. Tamera only paused and watched them for a minute before moving on. As Matt led them on campus, Tamera rubbed her hands together, her palms sweaty. She was a bit nervous, but of course, didn't let it show. Pretty soon, they were entering a building, and making their way towards a lady at a desk.

A schedule was passed to her, and Tamera frowned as she looked it over. Everything on the schedule was tolerable, everything except for having to be there by eight o'clock in the morning. She just silently stared at the paper, listening to some of the others complain. Hey, this is what you signed up for, she thought. She folded the paper into a neat square as Matt led them to the dorms, telling them that they'd be separated by gender.

"Alright, so this is where I will leave you guys. If you have any questions you can go back to the front desk. Most of what you need to know is on that sheet I gave you. I need to get back to my office." With that, Matt walked off, leaving them to do their own thing. Tamera, not at all tired, headed to the room anyways, room 123, putting her things away and plopping down on one of the beds and laying on her back. "What now?" she spoke to an empty room.

Anya was quick to run out the door. She wanted to see the city as well, she was not the least bit interested in the helicopter. It was easy for Anya to catch up to Mikkish and then her run came to a quiet stop as her pace slowed and she began to follow him. she stayed quiet as she had no love for speaking. she had space out on much of the group before now. still, the though of real magic excited her. A place where she stood on even terms with others. Where she would not excel beyond the average in seconds of seeing whatever she would. She hoped it would be a place she would be normal, without the scrutinizing and envious glares being shot at her from every direction. At least she could dream.

Mikkish' interests weren't only the clubs and bars, but also the general sights and the people. Were there US companies here like Starbucks or McDonalds? He hadn't seen any on the brief tour Matt lead them on.

A couple times, instinctually, he "jumped" at certain noises or what he thought were shadows moving out of the corner of his eye, only to realize no Pests were there. That would be something he had to get used to: the absence of any Pests.

In fact, he wouldn't have noticed Anya if it weren't for him remaining on alert for any Pests. As sudden sounds of shouting came from a bit ahead of him in the city, he turned around to make sure no spiders, tentacle masses, or other abominations were stalking him, to find a girl with short blonde hair staring at him, and walking behind him.

"Hey, you're new too, aren't you?" He smiled "I never got your name."

Anya opened her mouth in reply only to choke on her breath. He had only asked a simple question but to her, It was so strange to talk aloud with another person. She normally did not get this far. What should she say? What should she do? Anya realized she was overreacting, and not enough time had passed for a reply to be awkward. Yhe needed to reply soon. "Yes" she said, her eyes had locked with his and she held them there while it was unbearable. Her eyes wanted to dart in every direction but his. It was like the wind had been knocked out of her. She hoped this conversation did not last any longer but in the midst of her internal panic, she held her composure. She refused to let him see her nervous. She would not acknowledge weakness.
