The Remaining Hybrids

Long ago, when the land and its people was young, there lived superhuman-like creatures called Ghost Hybrids. The Ghost Hybrids, often just called Hybrids, have two forms. A ghost form and a human form, each form resembling the other in same way. However, they stay in their human forms of most the time unless they see a reason to change forms. Often, this will only happened when they are fighting, as being in their human forms lock their ability to use their ghost powers.

Ghost Hybrids are a very proud race yet are very isolated creatures, even to their own species, they make their homes in forgotten areas, like abandoned mansions, forgotten castles, empty caves, abandoned caverns, and mountain tops, anywhere they can go that is away from all of humanity as well as their own kind.

But sadly the humans made a very cruel, sick legend of their species. This legend has caused so much loss and heart ache to the Hybrids. So many hybrids have lost their mates, children to hunters seeking a false story. The cruel legend that was written says that taking the blood, heart, lungs and liver of a Hybrid will grant you immortality as well as their ghostly powers. It was also stated that that bones and teeth of a hybrid have magic use as well. Hunted like game, the few that remained bare scars and heart ache of loss, human they are not, but they still have emotions. Now during the time of merchants, noblemen's, witches and wizards, kings and queens, humans of all ranks and power still seek a Hybrid for the so called immortality and power. Little did they know there are so few left, the remaining are always on the move, hiding what they are in order to survive the world and humans. They are a dying race who all hope and pray that someone, anyone can save them. What would you do if you found a Hybrid?

*Danny grabbed his bow and arrows, heading outside to hunt. It was evening, and Danny knew that humans were less likely to be outside of their homes, which made hunting safer for him. The hybrid headed along his usual hunting path, pausing from time to time to sniff the air for signs of game animals or danger. His movements were silent as he picked up speed, heading towards a moose. It was a bull moose, from the scent of it, and Danny knew that he had to be careful about taking the animal down, if he didn't want to get himself hurt the process. After a few minutes of running, Danny finally got to where he wanted to be, and slowed back down to a walk as he got closer to his target. The animal's scent was stronger now, giving away its location. The animal appeared to be pawing thorough the pine needles, unaware that there was a hunter after it.*

A shadow, less material than a ghost, moved swiftly through the densely packed forest. Pine needles softened foot falls as soft hands held a bow made from maple and holly. A string, dried and cured from the intestines of an elk tied the top and bottom notches together. Red eyes peered out at the silent forest. A short girl, barely 17, dodged between trees. A leather jacket covered a light brown shirt as thick pants adorned her lower body. Fur-lined boots ran up her ankles, wrinkling the ends of her pants.

Finn's stomach growled in the rapidly diminishing sunlight. Damn, she was hungry. The girl hadn't eaten in the past three days. Cursing her luck, and cursing the bastard she was hunting down, Finn took a deep breath. Then she heard it. A snuffling off in the distance. To her left, nearly fifty yards, a deer? No, a moose, foraged in the damp pine straw. Her eyes snapped open, cold hunger apparent in their depths. Moving, she hunted, cold wind blowing against her pale ears.

Slowing, she saw her prey. It was large, easily able to feed a family of five for a week. However, Finn was a greedy women. A hilariously hungry smile crept over her face as her stomach threatened to growl once more. Raising her bow, Finn took aim. Her fingers came back to the corner of her mouth as her left arm, holding the bow, bent ever so slightly. Release. Wind. The arrow flew as the string of the bow snapped back and forth. Striking true, the arrow sunk deep into the moose's side.

What she didn't realize though, was that someone else had shot the moose. ANother arrow stuck out from the beast's side, opposite and mirrored to Finn's own.

*Danny watched as the other arrow hit his prey. He let out a growl of frustration, as the animal fell to its side, snapping his arrow in half as the animal fell. On top of that, it was one of his best arrows. No matter, he could build another one using that same pattern for arrow making, but it was harder than most patterns.*

*Danny sniffed the air, trying to determine what had also shot his target. He froze, realizing the human scent's presence. He decided to move away slowly, and hope that the human wouldn't see him. Danny knew enough about humans to know that they were mostly sight creatures, and that their sight was worse in the dark then in daylight. Perhaps he could use his ability to see in the dark and the human's disability in the darkness to his advantage.*

Finn's eyes snapped past the moose. There was a snap, though she couldn't tell what had snapped. Then her stomach growled again. A harrowing sound that filled what seemed to be the entire expanse of forest. Finn's face changed, immediately, from a ravenous hunter to a fair faced girl.

Rubbing her stomach, the much more domestic Finn trudged out from beneath the trees. Walking towards the moose she pulled out a hunting knife. Walking around to its far side, she saw something. A straight stick, with fletchings, broken on the end. Her eyes narrowed as she leaned down, then, flipping the moose up with only the slightest difficulty, she saw it. The broken shaft of an arrow had imbedded itself within the side of the moose. Letting the corpse drop, Finn's crimson eyes surveyed the area where it came from.

Who was there, watching her?

"You've lost this kill, Danny. Time to move on." *Danny thought to himself. He continued to move away. Danny was too focused on getting away, and in the process he stepped on a twig, which snapped under his weight. He let out a growl, frustrated with himself for being so careless. He looked up at the surrounding trees, and went to a pine tree before starting to climb it, hoping he could get out of sight before it was too late. He left his arrows and bows at the base of the tree, thinking that the darkness.*

Finn's eyes snapped up to where the sound of cracking twigs reverberated throughout the woods. Standing still, motionless, the girl notched another arrow. Standing slowly, she moved through the trees, her form almost being lost among them. Walking slowly, she judged the forest, and it gave her few answers. A broken twig lied on the floor of the the forest. Looking around, Finn found several more signs. A pushed branch, not yet to its place of origin. Finally, her eyes, attuned to the dark as they were, chanced upon something that did not belong. A bow, a perfectly carved piece of wood, sat at the bottom of a great pine, along with a quiver of arrows. Their forms unmistakable, Finn stalked to the tree's edge. There were scuff marks on the bark, pieces of mud hung along the tree's crags.

Someone was here, and they were phenomenal climbers. Looking up, all Finn could see was the shivering of the tree's branches. Pulling back the arrow that she had already notched, Finn spoke out. "Hey, you up there. Don't hide, I know you're up there. I also know that you were the one who shot the moose. The broken arrow matches those in the quiver down here." Taking a breath between words, Finn continued, her crimson eyes studying the canopy. "I'm willing to share the moose if you come down now."

"Don't do it, Daniel. Don't say anything. It's a human, and you could die if you reveal yourself." *Danny thought to himself. He froze in the tree, and hoped that his own stomach wouldn't growl. He wanted to say or do something, but his better judgement told him not to. Danny bit his tongue and looked below him at the ground, clinging to the branch he was on. Mentally, he weighed the pros and cons of his choices. As long as even half of the kill would last him, which would be about fourteen days, give or take, he stood the risk of paying with his life. Besides, he could always go shoot a deer or something.*

Sighing a little, Finn slowly released the arrow from the bow, placing it back into her own quiver. "Well, I'll be setting up camp over at the moose." Bending down, she picked up the bow and quiver that laid at the base of the pine. "If you want your gear back, then come down and say hello." Walking away, Finn easily took the gear as ransom.

Arriving back at the clearing, Finn started gathering the nearby pieces of twigs and branches. Pulling out a tinderbox, the brunette girl started a tiny blaze. Feeding it, she let it grow into a roaring fire. Then, pulling out a hunting knife, Finn began to butcher the moose. The girl made sure to keep an eye on the bow and quiver, in case the stranger came to retrieve them.

*Danny held back a growl of frustration as he watched his bow, arrows and quiver go with the girl. Now, he would need to build all new gear, which would take him a while. He would also be defenseless if he was attacked by hunters while making new gear. He looked to the trees around him, deciding which trees to use as an escape route. Carefully, he jumped from the tree that he was in, landing on the next one with ease. A few leaves were sent to the ground as he landed, but he didn't care. The scent of the moose meat hit Danny's nose, causing his mouth to water. Pausing, Danny looked at the ground, watching Finn for a moment before shaking his head. Now, instead killing the hybrids directly, the humans were taking their food.*
